Donald Trump and Rick Perry just walked away,

"Once (a new technology) has been proven up, we need to get out of the business."

The problem, Mr. Perry, is that energy isn't a free market.

For instance, you have the world's oil industry largely owned, controlled and manipulated by Mideast royals and despots (think how low oil prices are largely driven by Saudi and OPEC flooding the market with their cheap oil to prevent U.S. oil from being developed), and even here at home, government promotes fossil fuels with cheap water access, government-subsidized railroads and pipelines, black lung disease and coal-miner health care benefits, lack of severance taxes, etc.

Indeed, the whole reason NEW energy technologies need government research development and help is because entrenched old, polluting technologies have too much government backing and hamper potential free market forces.

Utility monopolies don't have to fight for customers because, by law, they have captive markets where rate payers have no choice but to buy from the local monopoly and can't pressure them to innovate to cleaner, cheaper sources. Without government pressure and support, those monopolies would stick with 19th century coal.
