"Regardless the changes do not eliminate the OCE nor do they gut it."

Really? The OCE with this legislation would cease to exist as an independent entity and be rolled under the Republican controlled House Ethics Committee....ie. eliminated.

Also, the legislation made the following changes to the OCE's previous charter:
The watchdog would have no longer been independent. Lawmakers would vote to determine if a fellow member of Congress had broken the law. The body would have been prevented from receiving anonymous tips. Accusations against lawmakers would no longer be made public.

How exactly is that not 'gutting' the OCE?

Regardless the changes do not eliminate the OCE nor do they gut it.

Well, lets see. It was an independent, non-partisan agency and the GOP voted to put it under the control of the house. A house which just happens to be controlled by the GOP.

Call it what you want but those changes would have put the GOP controlled house in charge of ethics investigations. I guess if you are partisan enough, you just might not see anything fishy about that.

@silo. What the Repubs. actually did was address two lingering criticisms of the OCE. First criticism is that it was to frequently confused with the House Ethics Committee. Second leaks from the OCE about its investigation. The new rules approved Monday was to change the name to Office of Congressional Complaint Review to clarify it does not have the same status of the House Ethics Committee. In addition the rules prevent leaks on investigations and prevents it from investigating anonymous tips. Regardless the changes do not eliminate the OCE nor do they gut it.

"Just read that Democrats tried to Gut the same office in 2010. Where was the outrage then. Hypocrisy runs deep there."

There was no outrage then because the two scenarios are nothing alike.

In 2010, 20 Democrats authored house resolution 1416, proposing changes to disclosure rules in the OCE. The resolution died before ever being referred to a committee, and never remotely saw a house vote.

In 2017, Republicans authored, amended, voted and PASSED a bill that would remove the entire OCE. Not change, not modify....but completely remove the entire OCE.

You're comparing apples to airliners and complaining about hypocrisy?

Nothing to see here folks we can handle our own ethics investigations just fine thank you.....uh what? Trump just tweeted something.....crud.

I guess the GOP will need to test other boundaries. Looks like our new supreme leader has bigger fish for them to fry. I just hope the rest of us are not burnt in the process.

"So now, being non-partisan yourself, you support President Trump, right?"

Being partisan or non-partisan has nothing to do with having support for Trump.

There are slimy characters in both major parties. People with integrity can and do reject the the slime in their own party, but for some reason, Trump fans seem more inclined to forgive his slimy tendencies.

First off I'm absolutely certain you do truly believe you clearly stated your point. However. If so it shouldn't be that difficult explaining such. Unless of course you are truly unaware and are caught up in your own extremist rhetoric. Furthermore. Please thoroughly read and comprehend all previous posts. You'll see at no time did I call you "the most partisan commentator ever". In conclusion. Definitely noticed you ignored the question regarding your familiarity with Trump. We both know why! Possibly you will actually read the article next time prior to commenting but I'm not holding my breath. Happy New Year Barker. Your turn!

Your point is specifically T. Barker? As you are aware my small town fellow poster. Born and raised in New York. Therefore, unfortunately I've been quite familiar my entire life of Trump and his antics/behavior. How about yourself? Familiarity regarding the subject matter at hand does not equate to daily, extremist, obstructionist anti-liberal tirades. Especially when one clearly does not investigate factual information or take time to even read articles prior to posting. #NeverTrump! Your turn.

"They never investigated ONE Democrat for ethics violations! It should have been called the Democrat ethics violation protection scheme! Get rid of it, save millions for the taxpayers! Cut out wasted spending and shrink the size of government! Good job GOP! There needs to be much, much more house cleaning (pun intended)! Next up: repeal Obamacare! GOP is defending the taxpayers of America"!

Apparently this new year the resolution was to come across even more off base and partisan T. Barker. Possibly next time you may actually read the article prior to the daily, extremist, partisan rant. Then again?

"They never investigated ONE Democrat for ethics violations"!

Ah yes, Republican saviors are here to drain the swamp!

First item of business for 2017: take away ethics investigations!
(If it truly was a bipartisan problem, they could have found some Democrats to join them, and passed the bill quietly somewhere in the middle of the session - but instead, destroying ethics oversight is GOP priority #1!). Swamp creatures rejoice!

Next item of business: repeal Obamacare! (Even though tens of millions more people now finally have basic health insurance, and even though 8 years later we still have no idea what a "Republican alternative" even looks like).

Third item of business: tax cuts! (this from the same people who advocated budget austerity at the worst possible moment, right in the middle of the 2007-8 recession, and from the same Republicans who brought us W's massive tax cut, turning our last budget surpluses into deficit spending).

Putting Republicans in charge guarantees financial self-destruction yet again - and their Morality Police get a clear path too, now that their multiple-affair, Playboy magazine "contributor" Twitter President is on board. This swamp is getting grosser by the minute.

“Republicans claim they want to ‘drain the swamp,’ but the night before the new Congress gets sworn in, the House GOP has eliminated the only independent ethics oversight of their actions,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said in a statement Monday night. “Evidently, ethics are the first casualty of the new Republican Congress.”

It won't take long for the GOP train to go off the track. Take OBamacare for instance. Most of the structural elements of it have overwhelming public support. I have a 12 year old nephew diagnosed with brain cancer just last year. Already medical bills well over a million dollars. The insurance company would have stopped paying and they would now be in bankruptcy. With Obamacare, no caps. With the Republicans plan? Who knows. Just watch for the public opinion to turn when the tx cuts go mainly to the rich, people lose benefits and the deficit grows. We've seen this movie before but most forgot about it.

Sigh----and yet in two years we will vote these same people back into office. I would recommend that we all vote as I do in the next election vote for anyone who is not the incumbent.

I will give President-elect Trump credit for criticizing this move it shows the arrogance of the Republicans in the house.

kudos to Trump. Although, I would like for someone to tell my why it is "unfair"

The GOP is going to have to learn to lead rather than take up petty, useless causes.

Of course they did, just like Utah's GOP they don't need ethics oversight, they should be trusted.

What a revealing move by the GOP to know that ethics would be their biggest problem, so they choose this as their important business, before they can get down to business.

Just to name the first 3 I came across. And it took less than a minute.

"There needs to be much, much more house cleaning (pun intended)!"
And yet you applaud the move to neuter the cleaners.

How about you Lost? Lets hear your take on this as opposed to just a partisan shot.
