As a teen, my bedroom walls were covered in Utah Stars posters. I had Big Z,
Willie Wise, Ron Boone, Jimmy Jones and Glen Combs. Wish I had kept them, which
is not like me to throw stuff away. The ABA was very exciting basketball to
watch. I once read that Willie Wise was thought by many at the time to be
second only to Dr J as the best forward in basketball. I had to agree. What a
treat to see Willie and Dr J go at each other in the old Salt Palace. Above
all, I'm so glad to see Zelmo inducted into the hall but sad that he's
not with us to enjoy the honors.
Growing up watching this team was a real treat. Congratulations to Zelmo and
his family. Glad to have Ron Boone still in the community and working with the
Jazz. He was an awesome player in his own right. I used to call him the mini
Dawkins. I remember watching so many great young stars that came through the
ABA. Loved those red, white and blue balls. Thanks for the memories.
I remember these two. They were fun to watch, but it is really too bad that
this recognition didn't come while Big Z was still alive. Willie Wise was
really fun to watch, too. Where is he, and when will he be honored?
Incidentally, the Utah Stars coach was later hired away to the Los Angeles
Lakers as their coach, and later as their General Manager/President. Ron Boone
later joined the Stars and remained right here in Utah (and I am glad he did!).
As a young kid my dad would drop me off at the Salt Palace to watch the Stars
play. Love Zelmo Beaty, Willy Wise, Red Robbins, Ron Boone and the other
players that were fantastic to watch. Also got to see Julius Irving play
against us. Loved his fro. 3 pointers and Red White and Blue
balls. Loved the ABA. Some good times and cograts to Zelmo and
