This year is big because it's the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Rally.

You can't imagine how beautiful and fun it is to ride around the Black Hills and the surrounding rolling prairie on a motorcycle, until you've done it. I never appreciated it until I went back to ride there, and I grew up on a ranch/farm less than 30 miles from Sturgis.

I'm not sure I would want to ride with THAT many people though. The population of South Dakota doubles in the Summer with the rally and the tourism industry as it is. And most of it is right around the Black Hills, but not just in Sturgis. They have huge campgrounds miles out of town only operational during the rally. Hotels within a hundred miles are packed, and people camp out in front yards.

Sometimes riding alone, you can get stuck in a pack of thousands of motorcycles even when it's not an extra-special rally like this one is. The locals stay out of Sturgis if they can.

It doesn't surprise me they've had over a dozen fatalities already this year.
