The federal government should never be permitted ownership of a significant percentage of land in any state and if anything should only be permitted to own facilities and parks that it maintains, and nothing else.

Why doesn't the Federal Govt simply garnish his financial accounts for the amoutn he owes? That's what the IRS would do to the rest of us if we refused to pay our taxes.
If he has no bank accounts to garnish - fine - we just found a great place to store nuclear waste - right in Bundy's back yard.

    Funny thought.

So if protestors in Ferguson would have shown up with guns pointed at state police the tea party crowd would have demanded a crack down.

This guy and a bunch of gun toting folks show up in force, and tea partiers throw a party.

Does anyone else see the irony ?

When a state is admitted to the union it is returned most of the land. Even if this chap was a crook I'd support him because the feds including Homeland Security at the real crooks. Bundy is doing out dirty work for us.

Lets round up our guns and go down there and get us some beef that is illegally grazing on our property.

Since the Feds won't impose the full extent of the law on Mr. Bundy - I think it's high time for a citizen's arrest.

    Re worf

I'm glad I don't live in the same world as you.

It must be a downtrodden and horrible place.

Most fairy tales have happy endings, you're version, laced with bitterness and spite, will never have a happy ending.

    I'll pray for you.

Ok, down to 64% of Federal ownership... really? and that is acceptable? and what determines that percentage? A rare tortoise? A declining flower? You further prove my point... The point remains. The Feds have too much state land. No good thing will come of it. They can't even put up a good website.

The scrawny cattle he has roaming public land that is extreme desert are not commercially viable. The only purpose is too attract radicals and the press. His ranch property is used for derelict cars purchased with grazing fee avoidance funds.

worf, good excuse that Bush has been gone for 7 years. That is as bogus as it comes. You choose to attack this amazing President without many real facts. And then when it is pointed out to you that Bush did worse you say "well he is gone".

This President has taken less vacation days than Bush. He has the right to take vacation.

Cliven Bundy is using my land that I as an American citizen own and uses it for his own personal gain. If he was grazing on my yard as I was mowing, I'd call the police and have him arrested.

That's the difference. He is stealing form even you as an American citizen.

Oh and his racist comments made the radical tea Party flee from him like the plague.

Also learn what a debt ratio is. Our actual debt ratio has decreased 75% since Bush.

Our economy is recovered from Bush and is robust. Unemployment down, millions more insured, and I'm sure that your retirement, (401-k) should be more pleasing than when Bush was there.

This fine amazing President has led by example. And the numbers show it.

    How Free can you get?
What was that comment about "welfare moms" clive made?
I highly doubt he wants to pay back taxes on "his" property either.

It occurred to me that Mr. Bundy may indeed be representative of "the real America" if it means:

    Taking land that isn't our own;
Keeping all benefits gained from it; and
Attacking the character of the rightful owner when objections are raised.

You could also add driving off the rightful owner with violence or the threat thereof.

Yes, I do think Mr. Bundy exemplifies this aspect of our history quite well, but it has nothing to do with liberty...or character, or honesty, or personal responsibility, or etc., etc.

I find it a little offensive to call this a "liberty" camp-in. How about a "forget the rule of law when it suits us" camp-in? Or a "sour grapes" camp-in? I say this as someone that loves the Constitution and liberty. This is not about liberty.

Lilalips: "80% of Nevada "belongs" to the Feds... What about Utah? Isn't it about the same? 80% of Utah land belongs to the Feds too!"

You're about 25% too high. Here are the accurate figures for Utah (based on information from the Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center):

    BLM: 42.0%
    Forest Service: 15.0%
    Defense Dept: 3.3%
    National Park Service: 3.9%
    Fish & Wildlife Service: 0.2%
    Total Federal: 64.4

    SITLA: 6.3%
    State Lands & Forestry: 2.7%
    Division of Wildlife Resources: 0.9%
    State Parks: 0.2%
    Total State: 10.1%

    Tribal: 4.5%

    Private: 21.1%

There are some minor ownership categories (less than 0.1%) not listed and some rounding effects, so it doesn't add up to 100.0%

Cliven Bundy is a freeloader. It is not the federal government's land, it is our land. All of ours. So as a landowner, are you ok with someone using your land for free? If he is not paying for the maintenance of the land, we are.

  • Lilalips Attleboro, MA

80% of Nevada "belongs" to the Feds. That is outrageous. What about Utah? Isn't it about the same? 80% of Utah land belongs to the Feds too! The states should manage most of the land, not the Feds. The Feds act unconstitutionally, in my opinion, by simply declaring millions of miles a "habitat" for this or that, in essence, stealing the land and undermine the moral authority that they have. They squander this moral authority by the IRS targeting conservative groups or simply writing their own rules, (Federal Agencies making laws), and then going out and declaring that businesses are in violation of those laws. You can't have people randomly making and writing their own laws, unconstitutionally, without the consequence of having people disregard those laws. We will become.... lawless and yet we will be awash in laws.

    Re: worf

The land was never Cliven Bundy's in the first place. Honestly, I think this is a perfect example of white privilege; claiming oppression because the government won't allow you to graze your cattle on their land for free.

    Sorry S-N-S,

The feds can't even balance a budget, or be truthful to its own employers.

Why turn family, and state lands over to them? Eighty percent of Nevada belong to the Federal government? That's crazy.

I want our politicians to lead by example. To lead by the words they spoke during their campaigning, and quit stealing our lands.

You write "Why pay a grazing fee on your own property?"

That is the key point here: He is NOT grazing on HIS property.

He is grazing on federal land. He is trespassing, violating both state and federal laws. He has lost ALL court battles at ALL levels of government. He is a criminal. Period.

Since you apparently do not understand the concept, ranchers are required to purchase permits to graze cattle on federal lands. There are limits as to how many head they can run.

I worked for many years herding cattle on federal lands. There is a lot that has to go on to ensure proper maintenance of the land. Bundy is overusing the land and refusing to pay for his abuse.

Put him in jail first, and then quietly round up the cattle to pay his fees.

Worf, you are forgetting that Congress is totally responsible for the Federal debt. And who elects Congress?

You are also ignoring the fact that out of the last umpteen Presidents, it has been ALL the Republicans who have increased the debt and ALL the Democrats who have actually managed to reign in spending as much as possible.

  • Lyn52 Saint George, UT

Your ignorance doesn't mean I make up things. You didn't know we have an eighteen trillion dollar debt, and the sponged people of America will have to pay it?

Disagreement does not equal hate. That's your invention. I expect any president to lead by example, and that's not hatred.

Bush has been gone for seven years, and I don't care what vacations he took.

As for Bundy. Why pay grazing fees from your own property? He can pay for income. Do you pay mowing fees at your residence?

The feds are sponging 18 trillion off who? Where did that one appear from? Even ox news hasn't said that one....

You can tell us the world if flat but it just isn't.

The feds sponge of off our citizens to the tune of eighteen trillion dollars. That's $50,000 for every second of ten years.

Does Obama pay flying fees for his flights to Hawaii, and fund raisers?

Do people pay gardening fees for what they grow in their back yard?

Why pay a grazing fee on your own property?
