    I figured that he wouldn't last much longer, but I am a bit surprised that he resigned that quickly.

    I guess he wants to give his successor as much time as possible before the 2016 Scottish parliament elections. I can't imagine that the SNP will hold onto their majority, let alone increase it. They could be lucky to have a plurality after 2016.
