Is this a real news story or OpEd? It seems much of the information is inaccurate if compared to people's real experiences at the border and with Illegals, in general. This country is being destroyed from within and the perpetrators have called in their minions to cross the border and help them.

Let's see what's actually happening on our southern borders...

Human traffickers are paid, sometimes $thousands, by families to get their kids through Mexico to the US southern borders. Then, when they arrive the US government takes over, taking the kids into custody, moving them to a halfway house, then on to a relative or someone who will take them in.

Seems the US government has teamed up with traffickers in an effort to efficiently move foreigners from Central American countries into the US... with the US taxpayer footing the $billions in costs.

"Getting across the border is an art of deception...of not getting caught."

Wrong. They wanna get caught. In fact, they turn themselves in. They get free transportation to the nearest board and room, get their diapers changed, and bottle warmed. Then, they get free bus/plane fair to their nearest US relative or others who are willing to take them in. And, finally, when enough time has passed they are given amnesty, a job, and government handouts.

"I propose that the owners and editors... show their true colors regarding this issue."

Good luck with that. The moderators deny comments that are a bit critical. They're looking for mostly pap.

"Why don't they step up and offer their jobs, wealth, identities, and positions to illegal immigrants?"

Call for help with home delivery and see who you get on the other end of the line... someone in the Philippines.

Some want our borders wide open to anyone with any kind of disease or problem. Some want no immigration of any kind. We have always been a nation of immigrants and this should continue, but opening our doors widely to children and adults will set forth a Tsunami of immigrants. We have to draw the line somewhere.

As you indicated, the number of people who actually show up to be deported is pathetically low.
In 2008 ICE put together a program called Operation: Scheduled Departure. They invited 457,000 illegal aliens with deportation orders to turn themselves in. There would be no penalty, even though they were technically fugitive absconders.
Guess how many people responded to that offer? A total of EIGHT people!

Regardless, I still believe that there is three card monty going on at the border. The misdirection created with all these children coming up and demanding a lot of border patrol attention is opening up other places for the real threat to America, drugs, to get easier access. Why is that issue never talked about? Do some people really believe that drugs are not coming in to the country from the southern border? And, of course, if drugs can be brought in, so can terrorists, and wmd. If another 911 type attack happens and it is traced to border violations, you can bet that from then on, all ideas about immigration reform will be out the window. The American people will demand that every inch of the border be secured. Period.

What the article failed to mention is,that when those who are turned loose in the USA and told to report to immigration authorities later, only about 15% ever do. The vast majority go into hiding, making it extremely difficult to ever find and send them back. They are just counting on and waiting for the amnesty bill that Obama wants to get passed so badly.

I sincerely believe the United States has less control over its borders than any other civilized country in the world. It's extremely sad and very potentially dangerous, since we have so little control over who or what is coming into our country.

It just dawned on me that you are in the belly of the beast there in Mcallen. Stay safe.
    @Fitness Freak
You wrote that Obama could do something about it if he wanted. He sure could. The Wilberforce law he's using as a loophole doesn't really apply to the situation. CIS issued a report that says:
It appears that a significant majority of children coming across are not "unaccompanied alien children" according to the definition found in federal law. Federal law defines an "unaccompanied alien child" as an illegal alien under the age of 18 who is without "a parent or legal guardian in the United States". Data from government agencies suggest that the overwhelming majority of minors arriving on the U.S. border have family in the United States.
There is little evidence to suggest that the recent arrivals are victims of trafficking, which involves coercion. Instead, families and their children are willing participants in smuggling operations, having paid smugglers to bring them into the United States. As ICE explains, "Human trafficking and human smuggling are distinct criminal activities, and the terms are not interchangeable."
Once again, we are being hoodwinked by our government.

July 22, 2014 4:20 p.m. call 400,000 illegals "low"? 40 might be low, or even 400, but 400,000?? These are not refugees from some war torn nearby neighbor, they illegals who Obama says "let em come, we won't send em back", so they no the rules have changed, and essentially, nobody is being sent back. They know this president is not serious about illegals, nor about securing our borders. He's destroyed our economy, our health care, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, our individual freedoms, our right to carry arms, and he will now oversee the flood of illegals who get free education, free housing, free healthcare, free food...and yes, free cell phones. Such a deal.

Other articles have pointed out that two out of three children have a parent or guardian with them. It also states that 240,000 have been relocated inside the country.

Obama and the news media has hidden this story for years, now we are suppose to believe them?

    Obama protecting the country?

    We're transforming into another Mexico.

Both will soon be third world countries.

BTW - I understand Mr. Obama is negotiating to buy a 4.5 million dollar home in Rancho Mirage Calif. for when he retires.

WHY NOT buy it just a little early and house 2 or 300 or the illegal trespassers there as caretakers for when he needs the house later?

    What could possibly go wrong??

An internal report by the border patrol itself says only one fourth of the "newest" batch of illegal trespassers are "unaccompanied minors".

Border crossings by families are up 5x.

I believe that giving Obama 4 billion to deal with the "unaccompanied minors" will ONLY result in them being flown from place-to-place all over the country - at taxpayer expense.

I believe that Obama COULD solve this problem tomorrow, by picking up the phone and DEMANDING Mexico quit giving the illegal trespassers safe passage through Mexico.
Freeze Mexico's bank accounts and stop all flights to Mexico from the U.S. until they comply.

But - I have no confidence whatsoever that Obama WANTS the illegal trespassing to stop!

Getting across the border is an art of deception...of not getting caught. Since there's no fence, how in heaven's name can anyone tell how many have actually come across the border?

Nice bit of propaganda once again from the newspaper that is as one-note in regards to this issue as any known.

I propose that the owners and editors of the Deseret News show their true colors regarding this issue. Why don't they step up and offer their jobs, wealth, identities, and positions to illegal immigrants? Why do they feel its okay for us to give up ours?

Very deceptive article. The author tells us that the number of people ARRESTED at the border is at an all time low but doesn't address the REAL issue. How many are getting across the border without being arrested?

Pardon me if I doubt Obama's data. He's been known to fib, especially if the topic is on his agenda.
