10% of this funding goes for "funding the Secretary's national
activities". So all of those Republicans that want to shut down the
Department of Education just voted to fund it to the tune of $30Million more.
That isn't much but Reps Chaffetz and Stewart who voted FOR this bill
should explain how funding $30Million to the secretary of education jives with
the general position of shrinking federal involvement in local education.
Representative Bishop was the only Utah Representative to vote no.
Parent/student choice is the enemy of those who object to charter schools. This
bill gives competition a chance.
Isn't it interesting that most republicans and especially those that post
on this board believe that the federal government shouldn't be involved in
education, yet when it comes to their pet projects, they have problem dumping
large sums of money into their favorite program. These same people in congress
and on this board would be screaming at the top of their lungs if the feds
dumped 300 million into traditional public schools that could not accessed by
charter schools. Another great example of hypocrisy. The whole
concept of "school choice" is an interesting misrepresentation of the
facts. Every parent of every student in America today has the right to choose
whatever school they wish.
