@worf: "Only a fool would believe the myth of man changing climate."

Air pollution is a contributing factor in 1 of every 8 deaths world-wide. Cities from Salt Lake to Beijing suffer under toxic air so often that we marvel at the news reports but don't change anything.

The Gulf oil spill is still causing damage to food fish, and is being linked to health problems in many reports. The Exxon Valdez spill was 25 years ago, that area has still not recovered.

Radiation from Fukushima is being found in food fish across the Pacific and high radiation counts are being reported all along the west coast of North and South America.

We are dumping trash and chemicals into the water and the air and think it does not matter, that it has no lasting effect. We deny the evidence around us that says different, and call it a conspiracy. We are impacting the environment, and it is cumulative.

The PAGES 2K project plotted global temperature trends at 30 year intervals for 2,000 years. They showed a slight cooling trend on all continents that ended in the 19th century as the global average temps shot up to higher than the last 1,400 years. In other words, the "discredited" hockey stick graph was vindicated by fresh research by 87 scientists and hundreds of contributors.

This isn't about recent events in your neighborhood. This is about global averages and trends. Parts of North America had a cold winter - but much of the rest of the globe had record setting heat. We're experiencing almost twice as many record setting hot days/weeks/months as record setting cold periods. That is a problem, especially becauses the changes are happening faster than at any time in thousands of years.

I said climate change was a hoax until I stopped reading the political posturing and started delving into reports from scientists.

Only a fool would believe the myth of man changing climate.

It's like believing ants cause earthquakes.

How gullible can some people be?

To "chilly" did you also see the articles that show that polar bear populations are GROWING. Could it be that the massive polar bear deaths are due to there just being too many for the environment to support?

For the rest of you AGW alarmists. Here are a few things to consider:

If AGW is real, why is Al Gore continuing to create so much CO2 with his jet and homes?

What should the temperature of the Earth be, and how do you know it?

What computer model is actually correct? All computer models said that we could never have more than 15 years without warming, yet we are now at 16 years with no warming.

Why are we using the end of an ice age as starting point to determine if the earth is too hot?

The thing that continues to amaze me is how Unscientific the people who continue to make the doom and gloom pronouncements really are. Here's just one example from this article regarding the disappearing Polar bears.

"But now, in an astonishing admission, the PBSG have acknowledged that the last population survey for the SB (Regehr, Amstrup and Stirling, 2006), which appeared to register a decline in population size and reduced cub survival over time, did not take known movements of bears into account as it should have done.

In other words, that 2006 study almost certainly did not indicate bears dying due to reduced summer sea ice in the SB, as biologists said at the time — and which they presented as evidence that polar bears should be listed by the ESA as ‘threatened’ — but reflected capture of bears that were never part of the SB subpopulation and so moved out of the region."

Find this story by googling "Polar bear survey used by ESA to list them as threatened... now invalidated".

There seems to be two schools of thought on Global Warming. One view is the scientists of the world got together in a massive conspiracy in order to cash in on lucrative government grants to study this. The other view is that the people who are doing damage to the environment don't want to pay to clean it up. It does seem odd that no scientist who failed to get a grant ever spilled the beans. It also seems the scientists the anti's trot out are the same type that the tobacco companies used to trot out to say smoking was safe.

Looks like Mann was actually involved in a different fib:

"Disgraced Penn State University (PSU) climatologist, Michael Mann, concedes defeat in his bogus claims to be a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Mann’s employer this weekend began the shameful task of divesting itself of all inflated claims on university websites and official documentation that Mann was ever a Peace Prize recipient with Al Gore and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change."

He is the author of the 'hockey stick' graph used by Al Gore who was later found to have reconstructed data to support his theories.

Wasn't Mann the guy that was implicated in manufactured data related to global warming a few years ago? I seem to recall his name and Penn State being involved.

GaryO. The motivation for global warming is money in the from of carbon taxes. Its promoters are anti-capitalists who want redistribution of wealth. The scientists used bogus computer models to predict climate change trends for which they are paid handsomely. They can generate any data they need to keep their income flowing. This was demonstrated recently by Penn State University investigating one of their "Professors" that fabricated global warming data. Climate scientists allied with the IPCC have been caught citing fake data to make the case that global warming is accelerating, a shocking example of mass public deception that could spell the beginning of the end for the acceptance of man-made climate change theories. But most importantly, all the dire predictions made in 1999 about an iceless world and rising oceans within 10 years have not happened.

Mountanman - You say global warming is all propaganda.

Have you speculated as to what the purpose of this propaganda might be?

Why is the vast majority of the scientific community, thousands of highly trained scientists, conspiring to fool the world into thinking man-caused global warming is occurring?

How do they profit from doing that?

Do they want us to start investing more in sustainable energy sources just to furnish employment for their friends and families?

Why do you think they would all get together and fool us like that? Any ideas?

Ralph - These anti-government, anti-science, anti-American, anti-reality "Conservatives" would be funny if they didn't present such a clear and present danger to this nation.

If you run through the list of Freudian Defense Mechanisms, these guys wear them out.

The top two favs for Right Wing extremists are Denial and Projection.

To these folks, chanting anti-government slogans while proclaiming themselves patriots, and pillaring legitimate scientists as propagandists while looking up to Rush Limbaugh as the maven of scientific wisdom, is all perfectly logical and normal.

Why do you suppose they're so over-represented as commenters on Deseret News articles?

Is the sky really falling? Geologic records indicate that there are many patterns of warming and cooling, north-pole polarity switches and many other changes that have happened for millions of years - predating human presence. I think the dino's used coal to keep warm maybe.....

I totally believe the Koch brothers' propaganda and Fox News about Global Warming.
They are so much smarter than a bunch of "scientists".

And this has nothing to do with the movie "Idiocracy".

    @ Lew Scannon:

You may be "just sayin", but you appear to have no proof whatsoever for your assertion. If you do, please present it. I've never once seen a correlation between believers of those two unrelated statements.

BTW: Since God's "days" are not the same as man's days, most Bible believers actually believe God created the earth in 6 periods of time, not 6 twenty-four hour periods. God's days could actually be thousands or even millions of years relative to mankind's days.

Lew Scannon: #1:Scriptures teach that God organized this earth from existing matter. We don't know how the matter came into existence. #2: God organized the earth in 6 time periods he called days which probably do not correlate to OUR days. Just sayin'. Believers in intelligent design have a difficult time accepting man made global warming because we have no power to alter the climate in anyway, That's God's prerogative, exclusively.

Its possible that a degree of global warming may be happening. It's happened cyclically throughout the history of the earth. There's no reason to suspect that these cycles won't keep happening. The big question is whether or not they are man caused this time. Jumping on board and saying that it is, is apparently the politically correct thing to do right now. I'm a bit more apprehensive than that.

Mankind is a somewhat vain to actually believe we can have such a dramatic effects on nature to such substantial degrees. If enough huge atomic bombs went off within a relatively short time, then perhaps. But short of that, nature has her own disruptions with massive volcanic eruptions and other such major events that mankind cannot control or compete with. Some of those natural events are multiple times more disruptive to the climate than the cumulative effect of everything mankind does over a multiple year period.

The other thing I've noticed is that none of these reports present any doable solutions to go along with their warnings.

Is it surprising that the human-caused climate-change deniers are the same folks who believe God created the world 6,000 years ago in six days? Just sayin'.

You don't need a huge think-tank to see through the propaganda. Here's how to figure out the truth for yourself:
    1. Have you looked at your own outside thermometer? Record lows and snow storms abound.
    2. Seventh grade physics shows that CO2's molecular weight makes it very heavy. It can't rise high enough to cause the greenhouse effect. Yes, there is a greenhouse effect, but it's mostly caused by water vapor! H2O is much lighter than CO2.
    3. College freshman statistics will show you that the error rate in temperature samples used is greater than the claimed temperature rise.
    4. Glaciers in Greenland have recently been shown to be getting thicker, not thinner. Same with Antarctic ice, which is never mentioned by warming alarmists.
    5. Stories of polar bears declining are lies, according to our government's own figures.
    6. CO2 is plant food! When the earth was young, there was very little free oxygen. It was poisonous to the few life forms here (primitive bacteria and plants).
    7. Sunspot activity is in a cycle in which it reduces warming radiation from the sun. This is actually causing a cooling cycle.
