I would suggest that all those calling Mike Lee nasty names actually try to provide some specifics rather than ranting and barking out uninformed liberal talking points. Here are some specifics about what Senator Lee has been doing...

    1. Mike made the case that it was WRONG for Barack Obama to exempt congress and big business from the ugliness of Obamacare. If individual people in this country are FORCED to swallow Obamacare and be penalized by it then so should congress. Apparently all the Lee haters believe congress should not be subject to their own laws.
    2. Mike made the case that we should defund Obamacare and thus allow for a year delay so that this train wreck of a bill can be fixed to some extent possible before allowing it to destroy jobs, cut peoples work hours to 27 per week and double peoples health care premiums. Again, Lee haters seem to like less time at work....oh I forgot that Obamacare supports don't work and love the increased diet of "free stuff" at the expense of working-tax paying-producing Americans.

Mike Lee is a GREAT senator and is doing what he was sent to do!!!

You can NOT amend and fix a horrible monstrosity.

When you look at the actual numbers of people who have signed up for obamacare, it is quite clear the American people do not want it.

Cruz and Lee are on the right side.

The unpopular stand is usually the right stand.

    Oct. 15, 2013 7:44 a.m.

Hypocrisy abounds around Mike Lee. How a career Washington lobbyist and lawyer gets people to believe he is a tea party candidate shows how gullible people are. He is a product of the very Washington he complains about! Why is he still taking his pay when Hatch and Matheson said they would not? This shows me where his heart is....

Instead of all this posturing and stupidity, why don't our elected officals simply do their job and work to amend and improve the ACA? There are some good things in it, and some good ideas on the Republican side to make it better.

I am an American; not a Republican or Democrat. Too bad our elected officals are more concerned with party and power instead of country....

We as a nation re-elected all of these selfish children. We are only getting what we asked for in 2012....

"This would be an example of Mike Lee breaking the law (which he has sworn to uphold)." Unlike Obama who allowed illegal aliens to hold a demonstration on the closed mall attended by Pelosi and other democrats, Rangell who was arrested with other activists blocking traffic on public roads. Obama who has side stepped ACA provisions as he thought he should. What is the point you are making, that the rule of law does not exist in Washington?

Some people feel health care is like food stamps. It's all free.

Many people have no morals. Let political leaders steal from the working man than use the money for vacations, and pay people to do nothing.

The House listed non-essential functions when they shut down the Govt, not the President. I believe a park is not essential, not when you compare it to the Center for Disease Control and other medical watchdog and research organizations. Food inspection stopped, remember that when you buy chicken or beef, DOD Civil Servants who directly support the troops were deemed non-essential by the TP, the FAA furloughed accident inspectors and commercial aircraft inspectors. Remember, it was the Congress who had to amend their list when it was revealed that Military Survivor Benefits were also deemed non-essential. It is their list.

Mike Lee led the charge in Congress to close Government, demanded the above to include Parks be closed but apparently did not want to lose a photo op and rebadged himself for this one event.

Remember Obama's own words from his 2008 electioneering:
"The problem is that the way Bush has done it in the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion from the first 42 presidents. No. 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome. So we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back. $30,000 for every man woman and child. That's irresponsible, that's unpatriotic." Senator Obama voted AGAINST raising the debt limit.

If anyone should have zero credibility, it is our President. The Republicans are only trying to inject a shred of responsibility by decreasing the rate of increase in our spending. Sequester. Entitlement reform. These are not bad words. These are essential for our long-term fiscal solvency.

I don't get why everyone is bashing Senator Lee. It's easy. It's trendy and popular. But no one is actually saying anything intelligent, to counter what he said on the Senate floor when he supported Cruz's marathon. Lee articulated really nicely what is wrong with Obamacare. No one anywhere is answering his perfectly accurate portrayal of the facts. I guess it's just easier to live in the sound bites and the politics and pretend that reality is something different than what it is.

But in both politics and reality, it is inadvisable for any politician to appear anywhere with Sarah Palin, especially when your credibility is on the line.

Anyway, thank heavens for Lee and all Republicans who are simply trying to restrain the runaway increases in spending by our bloated, overreaching federal government.

My buddy and his family had planned for months to go on a vacation to Washington last week. They flew home yesterday. When I spoke with him it was about 5:30 P.M. He said the best part was the War Memorial which he and his family went to on Saturday morning. What he was most surprised about was the ease in which they got in considering the Government shut down. I talked to him this morning and asked him again about the War Memorial. He said the only thing he observed were the Security Officers, random Camera Crews and a very small band of protestors. He claims there were absoulty no "Barriers" what so ever. Odd.. The video I saw was of Cruz and his minion Lee throwing barriers into a pile with the vets. How did the barriers get there? And why could my buddy and his family just walk in and the Vet's couldn't? Strange...

I'm not accusing any body of grandstanding but after talking with some one who was there on Saturday I am pretty sure that is exactly what it was.

Military people and veterans as a group are among the most selfish, conceited, coddled, and duped people in America. They got that way by the phony aggrandizement, praise and deification by the people who control them, the American Businessmen.

Unwilling to pay the true cost of foreign trade American businessmen use the taxpayer paid military to provide easy access to foreign markets mostly at the displeasure of foreign peoples. And while it is businessmen who get us into wars, it is left to ordinary people to get us out.

There is plenty of blame to go around on this. Certainly the Obama administration carries much of the blame. But Senators Lee and Cruz carry much of the blame, too. They correctly criticize Obama for making the veterans pawns in this political game. But Lee and his ilk are doing the same thing - shutting down the government to try to undo a law that was passed through proper legislative procedures. I agree that we need to repeal Obama care. But holding the budget process hostage and shutting down the government to do get your way is shameless political gamesmanship. What if the Democrats start using this approach and refuse to pass a budget unless they get their way on expanding "abortion rights," or any of their favorite agenda items. We would rightfully be outraged - as we should be now at the Republican House.

Defunding has been going on for years.
Example: During the late GWB years there was all sorts of hoopla about building 700 miles of border fence. In the summer and fall there were great debates and finally the bill passed.
Come December Congress failed to fund it. We all thought we were getting a fence, but at the end of the year Congress pulled the funding and nothing happened that year.
This ACA bill is a much larger animal but the concept is the same. If the House doesn't give you the money the program doesn't go forward.
As we've learned regarding selective enforcement the President can unilaterally NOT enforce the laws he doesn't like, funding or not.

The House voted to fund the government, just as they'd agreed to do when the Senate passed the appropriations bill in the spring (after intentionally delaying). But they tacked on an amendment to defund ACA, which had zero to do with the CR.

They reneged on the agreement absolutely knowing that the Senate wouldn't pass the amended bill.

They literally cheered when the amendment to defund ACA was passed.

They knew exactly what the result would be.

They had Cruz filibuster a vote in the Senate to delay its ability to react.

They were warned by the GOP leadership that it would backfire.

And when it did, all they could do is play the blame game.

Federal monuments weren't closed out of spite. They're closed because keeping them open is a violation of the Antideficiency Act - and Lee knows this. If he doesn't he should be disbarred.

Lee claims he has always said he didn't want to shut the government down. He is back-pedalling in the face of meager support and much criticism from his colleagues and constituents. In fact Lee told Derek Hunter on Hunter's radio show (July 19th) that he would not vote for a continuing resolution that includes funding for Obamacare........On July 7th in a Washington Press conference, he stated that he and 14 other senators"...will block a continuing resolution to keep government funded beyond Sept. 30th if it includes funding for Obamacare"......In a July 10th speech to CPAC, he said "It's time to defund Obamacare and if necessary, shut down the government to prevent additonal funding."
Of course he along with everyone else in the country does not want to shut down government. But he has indeed expressed his willingness to do so in order to get his way. It would not be right to allow him to run away from this position now that the political heat is on.

TN Cougar had it right. The House DID vote to fund govt, all but Obamacare. And the dems said no. This is totally constitutional: the House has the authority to fund the govt. Or to say no to certain things. They did what they thought was right, and the dems said no. The shutdown is Obama and Reid's fault. They closed monuments that are not even manned, and spent extra $ just to keep people out, for spite. They not only closed Mt. Rushmore, they closed the highway so that no one could even see it from a distance, out of spite. They held a busload of foreign tourists for a day in Yellowstone Lodge, and went out of their way to prevent them from glimpsing Old Faithful, out of spite. The list goes on, and on. Even if the govt had to be closed these spiteful activities were the lowest of the low, and all authorized by Obama. Obamacare is already failing, yet the libs remain true believers. Open your eyes and watch the failure.

The administration probably spent more money on the barricades and guards to keep people out, than it would have to keep the monuments open. The President is trying to "make it hurt."

In response to many of the comments made on this forum:

The house passed many bills that would have funded the government (including the memorials). It is Reid, the President, and their socialist allies that refuse to compromise. Reid and the President demand everything they ask for and then say the republicans won't compromise. It is shocking how the left can be so dishonest and then accuse the republicans of the very acts they commit themselves. Americans need to pay attention to what is going on with this process and not just devour the propaganda of the left.

Until the shutdown begin we have been under a budget in some form (whether through normal budget or continuing resolution) the entirety of the administration.

Democrats were proposing to use the House funding numbers for everything in gov't except Obamacare and that's evidence of a total lack of compromise?

Only ONE party has been openly embracing the use of Govt shutdown as a bargaining strategy for months (hint: it wasn't Reid, Obama, or any other Democrat). Now that Lee and fellow Republicans finally got what they've been saying they wanted, the doublespeak is mind-blowing (huh? somehow claiming that Obama shut things down?). Guess what - only ONE party is now claiming that defaulting on the debt "might not be so bad" after all (2nd hint: still not the Dems). Last time I tried paying just the interest on my credit card bill, VISA promptly froze my credit line.
We need Republicans who actually have enough basic decency and fiscal responsibility to get their jobs done on time through regular (civil) debate and persuasion, without resorting to extortion tactics and embarrassing self-destruction. We will ALL be paying the extra costs for years to come (through higher interest rates, mortgage rates, etc.), due to the current Republicans' reckless fiscal brinksmanship. We need to elect Republicans who don't cynically try to blame the other guys for things that only Republicans have ever been cheering for. Otherwise, nobody will ever take them seriously, no matter what their purported "principles."

Just hours before the govt. shutdown, Lee left D.C. to speak at the CPAC conference, while other Republican legislators cancelled their appearances at CPAC and stayed in D.C. To work on averting the shutdown.

What did these guys think would happen when they shut down the government? Did they really not understand what government does? Do they not understand non essential? Memorials (as much as we may like them) are non essential. And now these jokers are breaking the law also. The republicans need to stop this. Boehner needs to bring up the clean CR and they need to end this silliness.

Also, Cruz, and Lee, and Palin? You think Cruz, or Lee might want to look around and see who is standing with them? If I were Cruz, thinking about a political future, and wanting to run for president possibly, and I looked around and the only fellow politicians I saw was Lee and Palin, I'd be worried.

@Mike Richards - How do you suppose the Government can operate this non-essential government agencies without an appropriation bill... oh yeh, they can't. You can place the blame squarely on the Republicans in the House of Representatives, who have pulled out the nuclear option, because they are not getting their way. America voted, and the Republican platform lost by millions of votes. Rather than act like children the Republicans should work on revamping their platform and go for the win in 2014.

Mike should probably read the Anti-Deficiency Act (passed by Congress) and then the Constitution again, since he's missed the fact that the executive branch enforces the laws that Congress passes. In this case, a law that regulates what gets shut down when the government shuts down, and what does not. Again, if you don't like what's happening, maybe you should get the votes necessary to change it (not use parlimentary tricks to try to get your way).

This shut down was brought by Obama and Reid not by the Rep or the tea party. Both Obama and Reid are the ones saying my way or the high way and then being brats by closing down monument and other programs that hurt people. The Rep in congress and sent bills to fund vet, wic and other needed programs but all Obama, Reid and other dem keeps saying is how the tea party and rep and hostage takers and terrorists. Who is keeping people from going to the monuments, hint is not Mike Lee.
Retake your freedoms and pocket book, get rid of obamacare.

Who gave the direction to shut down the parks? Who gave the direction to stop funding Women, Infants and Children? Who thought that locking out the people who kept America safe with their selfless courage during WWII from the monument erected to honor them - with private donations - was something that would advance the Democrats and their cause?

Obama was wrong to shut down the parks and monuments.

Obama was wrong to hurt WIC when the House had passed funding for WIC.

Obama rejected the bravery of the people who made it possible for him to be president.

Put the blame where it belongs. Make Obama and Reid stand center-stage and take their "bows". They earned it. They deserve. Let them hear the jears and booes. When they get "booed", then maybe they'll realize that their pettiness has riled America and that we will not soon forget how they shutdown OUR government when they didn't get their way.

Sure then when someone defaces a monument it will be Obama's fault too. Just open up the national parks without any enforcement and let everybody start fires and cut down trees while we're at it.
