According to the ticket office, all Season tickets will be gone as the waiting list for tickets is long. The problem has to do with costs. It used to be a bargain to attend the games. This year we have 7 home games. My donation continues to climb to keep up with other PAC 12 schools. This year I paid an $800 donation plus $55 per ticket. The economy has hurt many fans the past 5 years and many will look at tickets versus paying a bill and some will have no choice. Still the demand is strong as many of the people moving into our state are from the west coast and are adopting Utah as their team and the fence sitters that used to attend BYU games are apparently coming to RES as fans are looking for better opponents and better value for their dollar.

RES will be sold out before the season starts. I believe Dr. Hill is looking to increase the demand and creating a larger waiting list so once the time for expansion occurs, the demand will be there.

Weak...... facts don't support your claim plus exaggerating and capitalizing doesn't make it so.

Jealousy and envy consume several Cougar "fans" as confirmed on this article's responses.

Why are we only seeing comments from one of our four little brothers? No comments from our MWC brother or from our Big Sky brothers yet we see many comments from our Indy 1.4 little brother "fans"that were left behind by the PAC 12. We are truly sorry that you continue to struggle as a mid-major program playing in the Indy 1.4 and WCC. Wish you had been invited to a major conference too. If making negative comments on Utah articles makes you feel better then please continue. I for one never read comments on BYU, USU, SUSU or WSU articles and would never leave a negative comment on one of your articles even if I read one. What a pathetic life that would be.

    Go Utes!

Seeing you Utesies squirm and twist in denial over the stadium expansion and this beg-a-thon for ticket sales is some of the best entertainment available. I couldn't care less about your 40,000 stadium but most of you Utes are hypersensitive about BYU's 60,000 + stadium.

Hill's comment about USU and ignoring the conference opponents is pretty funny.

And I would be jealous of what?

Little stadium, no expansion, losing conference records for the two supposedly 'premier' mens sports programs, problems with rugby, swimming, only on one satellite network, lost to Colorado, lost to USU, a 14th draft pick vs. #5, not in a Top 25 vs BYU in a Top 25, no bowl game, conference bottom dweller and the list goes on.

Looks to be a trend to me these past 2+ years

And I'm really jealous and bitter about this. Really I am.

Since your move to the PAC, U haven't beaten a single PAC 10.2 team with a winning record, U haven't even sniffed the Top 25, you've only been to one bowl game (in El Paso, ugh), you've suffered your first losing season since before Urban, and you've finished with worse records and lower rankings than BYU.

Unlike BYU, in struggling to barely beat PITT, OU complete obliterated them.

Yet Oklahoma LOST to Kansas(5-6) 11-28, which lost to Vanderbilt(5-6) 6-41. Go figure.

btw, what's your source for BYU 1984 having the 3rd weakest schedule in the nation?

  • AZUTE1 Mesa, AZ
    May 20, 2013 7:14 p.m.

Never actually earning it on the field-of-play--

byu played the 3rd weakest schedule in the nation in '84, yet was awarded for it with a "MYTHICAL" NC. Hysterical, actually. Particularly with them greatly benefiting from beating a grossly overrated PITT team, thus vaulting them out of nowhere up there to near the Top-10 [#12, if I remember correctly] in the rankings.

PITT concluded the season at 3-7-1, bowl-less and UNRANKED. Everybody knows byu couldn't have done it without such a fluke-occurrence taking place and, obviously, the voters couldn't undo their obvious error in ranking PITT so high, to begin with.

BTW, did you see what OU did to PITT on the same, exact field just 2 weeks later? Unlike byu, in struggling to barely beat PITT, OU complete obliterated them. Good times.

So you're saying Utah could have beat Florida in 2008? No. I actually picked Utah to beat Alabama because I, along with a lot of other SEC fans, believed bama to be overrated. They barely beat Kentucky by a FG, beat a horrible miss st team by 4 points, and only managed 20 points against a 2-10 Tulane. Bama couldn't throw the ball either...all this spelled upset for Utah. Alabama also didn't play a single ranked team in the SEC west that year because there weren't any other ranked teams in the SEC west (it was a down yr for the SEC). Florida and Tim Tebow on the other hand were a legitimate #1 team. Very good on both sides of the ball. While anything is possible I don't see Utah beating that Gator team on their best day. And lets also not forget that Utah went from unranked clear up to 17 in the polls that season after barely beating Michigan by 2 points...a terrible Michigan team that finished 3-9 (sound familiar?). Also won by a FG over 4-8 NEW MEXICO. Utah was a great team that year, but better than Florida? No.

Swoop, you are awesome. Thank you for the cougar support in building an addition to Rice-Eccles that will expand capacity to over 60k. Then all the cougar fans will be happy (probably sad) with real comparisons of ticket sales.

As for most ute fans (not Mr. B), we will continue focusing any rivalry talk about head to head competition.

Utah has an amazing schedule of USC, Oregon, Stanford and Washington. We even play a great USU team. If anyone else thinks their team on our schedule is great, then feel free to put them on our list. Utes have to worry a little about ticket sales, because so many free tickets are given to students, there are very few tickets left after the season ticket holders take their share. Increasing stadium size by 10k seats would be a tremendous boom to revenues.

    GO UTES!!

"In 08 they beat formerly #1 ranked Alabama and finished ranked #2..."

In 1984, BYU beat formerly #3 ranked Pittsburgh and finished #1!

Sorry, but the only legitimate claim to #1 is being ranked #1 in the final polls. It's not who you beat, it's where you finish in the final polls that counts.

    1984 #1/#1 BYU
    1996 #5/#5 BYU
    1985 #7/#7 BYU

    2004 #4/#5 Utah
    2008 #2/#4 Utah

It's laughable that you use the rankings to validate Utah opponents, yet refuse to acknowledge BYU's #1 ranking as validation of BYU's National Championship, even though ALL FIVE major national organizations selected BYU as the CONSENSUS National Champion for 1984.

BYU's claim to the National Championship sits in BYU's trophy case in the form of a $30,000 Waterford Crystal Football National Championship Trophy awarded to BYU by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), the exact same trophy that was awarded to the winner of the BCS championship game in 2008.

That's a far more legitimate claim to a NC than the 4th place Utes achieved in 2008.

  • ekute Layton, UT
    May 20, 2013 10:33 a.m.

Utah didn't claim a shot at the title in 04.

  • anti BCS Anaheim, CA
    May 20, 2013 9:41 a.m.

    Sheriff Andy Taylor

"I mean to actually win a NC you would clearly have to beat someone who finished in the top 20, right?"

Nope, the ONLY requirement for actually winning a NC is finishing #1 in the Final AP and Coaches Polls.

BYU had absolutely no control over how teams on BYU's schedule finished the season. BYU began the season playing #3-ranked Pittsburgh on the road. Are you saying it's BYU's fault that Pittsburgh tanked the season?

BYU did beat AP #24 Air Force(8-4) on the road, a team that finished higher in the polls than anybody the Utes beat in 2004, yet the Utes tried to claim that they deserved a shot at the 2004 national championship.

If you want to blame somebody for trying to back into a championship, blame #2 Washington and #3 Nebraska, both of whom were invited to play #1 BYU for a shot at the national championship, but chose instead to play lower-ranked teams. Neither team won their conference championship; neither team beat the #1 team. Yet, both tried to claim that they deserved to be national champions because they beat teams ranked lower than BYU.

Let's be real though, byu has never won a National Championship either. I mean to actually win a NC you would clearly have to beat someone who finished in the top 20, right? 2010 61,381 > 45,156
    2009 64,236 > 45,155
    2008 64,102 > 45,352

Call us when the Utes average 60,000+ at RES for five consecutive years... for the FIRST TIME.

BYU has been averaging 60,000+ at LES since 1982!

btw, seating configuration changes have reduced seating capacity at LES to 63,470.

Come on guys, if you're going to bicker at least stick to a meaningful topic. The jabs on here remind me when we were in 5th grade claiming "my dad can beat up your dad".

The Cougs haven't been in the WAC since the Utes, and both teams have old WAC opponents scheduled in the future. Drop the tired WAC line. I don't refer to the Utes as Big Sky PACer just because U play Northern Colorado. Holmoe told us the first two years of Indy would be tough to schedule. Guess what the Cougs schedule is probably tougher than the Utes in 2013, even tough the Utes will have their toughest schedule ever. There's something meaningful to argue about.

And come on Cougs, don't read more into Hill's comments than meets the eye. Now if the comments were about the Huntsman, that's a different story. But the Utes have filled their FB stadium and will continue to fill their stadium. However, if the Utes have a losing season again, will the FB fans turn like the BB fans? That great independent schedule with its "inconvenient" Kickoff times and dates seems to have hurt BYU's actual attendance.

Actually, it isn't just the bizarre start times that have hurt byu ticket sales. The product put on the field, the lack of quality opponents, and the embarrassing fact that byu's hated rival qualified in every respect to play in a coveted elite conference are also contributing factors. byu had promotions to unload tickets last year and it still didn't help.

I no it's a bummer you team (which is BYU not Georgia) is a mid major without and real prospects but it doesn't mean you and the rest of the clan have to constantly ankle bite. Sorry ute fans but this clearly means that the demand for tickets isn't what you're suggesting (or my bro in law and sister for that matter). If you want stadium expansion and think it's warranted because there's such high demand you're AD wouldn't be asking people to please buy season tickets, we will only hold them so long. Successful programs don't hold season tickets hoping someone will buy them before they release them. BYUs season tickets are sold...have been since the end of last season (at least the ones that arent on waiting lists). UGA has a 30 yr waiting list. Looks like being amongst the big boys doesn't help the fact that you're still a "midmajory WACer" wearing big boys clothes. 2008 attendance average 45,352

Filling RES doesn't seem to be a problem, does it? Last year Utah Football season tickets were renewed at a 92% rate, which is a very high rate of renewal considering a certain percentage of fans will move, fall on hard financial times, etc.

The few season tickets that were not renewed were resold to waiting buyers so fact they never went on the "public market."

In the front page article in the D News on "The offseason status of NFL players with Utah ties," there were several things of note:

The Utes outnumber BYU 2 to 1, which is consistent with the direction both teams are headed. And according to the article, most of BYU's NFL players are not even in line to get significant minutes. Utah has 11 starters as compared to BYU's 3, and Utah has 5 current Pro-Bowlers compared to BYU's 1.

It's a great time to be a Ute!!

Hey duckhunter, the Utes have sold out the past 5 seasons in a row. Don't worry about this. And if you're boasting about the 60,000 seats in Provo, what does that matter when the fans sitting in those seats are all headed for the exits in the 3rd quarter, like the last time we played you guys?

You're spouting off prematurely. Wait and see how long it takes for the remaining season tickets to get snatched up ... it won't be long.

So let's see....chris hill is so concerned about filling the crackerbox this year that he goes online to beg for utah "fans" to attend the games yet utah "fans" on the dnews message boards tell us they need to expand the crackerbox because there are lines of people "miles long" waiting for tickets. Something doesn't add up....
