    Among some of my neighbors and some in my own church, guns are not just symbols -- they are GOD.

    Guns have become a symbol of status. The status of our national psyche, which is fearful and ruled by extreme ideas, and where thought and insight are absent.

    The gun has been elevated to more than the status of a symbol. There are enough people in this society who have allowed them to become demigods. The fury and distortion over any perceived sleight or restriction approaches religious zeal. Perhaps the NRA should apply for tax-exempt status as a religious organization. If most of us lived in a world where unregulated firearm possession really did increase the chances of our survival I could understand this disturbing gun worship, but we don't.
