I'm not sure the president, any president anymore, could turn a phrase that would unify and rally enough of us to achieve real change. Our sputnik moments came because we were a bit more thoughtful then, before the internet. And we had an enemy. We always had to be in front of those evil Russkies. China, on the other hand, is not our enemy. They hold a lot of our debt, and we have a huge trading relationship with them. I'm a huge fan of great speeches, but I fear the days of 'Let the word go forth from this time and place....' are gone.
