Star defensive player's return good news for 2013
Some of you may need to recall Sam Bradford. Returned for his senior year when
he was a lock for the first round. he was injured in the first game of his
senior season and still ended up as the #1 pick. And as much as some like to
point out that BYU's best win that season was against an Oklahoma team that
ended the year unranked. Conveniently forgotten is the reason they had a poor
season. And that BYU was leading and playing very well when Bradford went down.
Also, the Sooners had 3 of the top 4 picks in the ensuing draft.
goredI don't know where you get your info from, but Van Noy
would have been picked in the first two rounds.Joe Kruger, on the
other hand, may have jumped the gun a little.
I hate to burst BYU fans' bubbles, but Van Noy was not projected to go in
any of the top 5 rounds. So he did the next best thing, and returned for his
senior year in hopes of improving his draft prospects. And going
6-6 next year, and don't know if this is a good idea for him.
SoonerUteTrust a desperate Ute to try bring irrelevant bowl viewship
smack into the conversation.btw, how many viewers tuned in to watch
Joe and Star play in the couch potato bowl?
phoenix says "You obviously didn't watch the Poinsettia Bowl...
"Neither did a lot of people -- "Nearly one million fewer viewers
tuned into the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl. The game ranks as the least-viewed
Poinsettia Bowl since at least 2006."
The ones claiming this will mean a BCS bid and those who assert it didn't
happen this year are simply not looking at things clearly.First the
naysayers simply overlook the poor play of injured Nelson, who basically
hamstrung the team with his poor plays. Had Nelson been healthy we may have one
three more games. His claiming he was healthy when he wasn't was a serious
problem for the Cougars. Those claiming this means a BCS bid are
ignoring the problem with the Offensive line. With their injuries and the back
ups showed why they were third string. Those who deride Doman are
clueless when they criticize him. You cannot have an effective play with an
injured QB who will will not admit it and the offensive line allowed anyone who
could walk get to the QB. The play was blown up as soon as the ball was
snapped. The offensive line could not protect him. Our receivers were wide
open, but the defense was on the QB. The RB was stuffed due to poor blocking.
They are no Doman's fault. His fault was believing Nelson.
To each his own.
Great news for BYU! Great choice for KVN on so many levels, especially life
after football. Good Luck next year and beyond...Go UTES!!
SoonerUteIt's laughable that you fixate on Reynolds, while
completely ignoring Manti and Star. "He hasn't yet, so why
would next year be different?"You obviously didn't watch
the Poinsettia Bowl... ignorance can indeed be bliss.Riley
won't be around to gift wrap any TDs for U next year, so Utah's O will
have to go through KVN to earn them.U were lucky to get KVN coming
back from an injury last season. Next season, U won't be so lucky.
"Spoken like a true BYU hater."No hate; reality. Everyone
thought Reynolds would be drafted and he wasn't. That isn't a knock
on Reynolds, just a red flag to kids considering giving up their college career.
The NFL may not want them, so kick back and enjoy the game while you can. I
think very very few kids should come out early. Van Noy made a good
decision."quivering at the prospect of the havoc Van Noy will
inflict on the Utes next season"He hasn't yet, so why would next
year be different?
SoonerUteSpoken like a true BYU hater.I'm expecting
KVN to have a senior year more like Manti Te'o had for Notre Dame this
season. And, with BYU's schedule next season, anything is
possible...much to the chagrin of our jealous friends on the hill,
who are quivering at the prospect of the havoc Van Noy will inflict on the Utes
"Smart move by Van Noy. Another year to get better and stronger. His NFL
stock will only improve; just like Star's did."Or his NFL stock
will tank; just like Matt Reynold's did.
Smart move by Van Noy. Another year to get better and stronger. His NFL stock
will only improve; just like Star's did. I always applaud a kid for staying
in school. The money will always be there; plus an education is for ever.
Best Christmas present ever!
SlopJ30timid sparrow just likes to stir the pot, usually based on
nothing but his own wild imagination.BYU getting KVN back for
another year is like Notre Dame getting Manti Te'o back for another
year. Both are team leaders and game changers who have the ability to
elevate the play of their entire team.2013 is going to be an
exciting year for BYU football.
Sir Robin, I must be missing some posts you seem to have read. I see exactly one
post so far proclaiming BYU "should be" headed to a BCS bowl, and a
couple others kind of addressing the requirements to get there. Nowhere have I
read that they are a "lock." Any other fictional BYU fan delusions
you'd like to comment on?
Awesome news to start out the new year. Welcome back Kyle!
RE: So. Cal Reader"As a Cougs fan, I LOVE that Hoffman and,
especially, Van Noy is returning. However, I'm also curious what their
pre-draft NFL analysis came back with? Where did the analysis have both pitted
in the NFL draft? It's all good to say they want to "finish what they
started", etc. I'm guessing whether a
"less-then-they-had-expected" analysis may have contributed to their
decision to return as well? Either way, the team is MUCH stronger with both
returning."According to the report on ESPN Van Noy was told by
the analysts that he would go in the first or second round. I guess you guessed
wrong. Go cougs!
Welcome back KVN.
Great news about Hoffman and KVN. Bronco has built something at BYU, this
particular season notwithstanding. Now, I'm wondering about Andy
Now, if they can only get Andy Reid to coach next year ... they could ... go all
... the way!!
Two keys for success next season, from my perspective. 1) NEW OC, Doman is not
capable of running a pro style offense and 2) the KICKING game needs a big
upgrade. If Sorenson is not much better, than this past season, a replacement
must be found. It is inexcusable that Bronco did not have a plan B, this
season, knowing of Sorenson's physical condition. I personally think
Sorenson has become damaged goods and must be replaced.
Get some issues with the offensive line solved and 2013 could be memorable year.
Nice to see he's coming back; I hope he doesn't regret it. Based on
what I saw this year,I'm not sure I have the sense of optimism that many
others seem to have, particularly with the schedule for 2013. Not only was BYU a
mediocre football team in 2012, from an offensive standpoint they were almost
unwatchable at times. A far cry from the high-flying days of McMahon, Young,
Don't do it Kyle, please. Don't risk your future. School will always
be there, the millions won't be if you get hurt. Your body only has so
many hits, your knees so many miles, your brain can only take so much
bashing. You'll get more out of your education if you
intermingle it with some life experience, and as someone who has a Master's
Degree on his wall I'll quote President Calvin Coolidge: "The world is
full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent."Take you talent and will and move on to the next
stage. Let the next player move up at BYU.
This is the best news I have had since KVN scored two touchdowns in the
I heard that Nelson is getting a medical redshirt for the last 4 years as well,
so he'll be back too!
As Mr. Burns says, "Excellent Smither's, Excellent."
Excited for next year. Kudos to kvn and hoffman for sticking around. Now lets
win some games that actually mean something. Forget the BCS. Start by beating
the utes and aggies, or at least one ranked opponent.
KVN is a smart, level-headed guy. He can do better than 2nd and 3rd team
All-American. In fact, he can be better than Manti Te'o (another player
who could have skipped his senior season, but didn't). BYU is lucky to
have him back and if they can replace a few other players on the front line,
they will be as good next year on defense as they were this year. Now, if the Cougars can just get their offensive punch back...
They would like to play on a team with a quarterback. Worth coming back for.
Kyle Van Noy and Cody Hoffman:You guys are studs!! Made my day!
Don't listen to the naysayers - you won't regret this decision. Next year could be pretty special. Mildred - please go find
your little brother Chris B and spend some quality time with him.
Brave Sir RobinSan Diego, CALet's see if I remember this
right (and apparentlyI am supposed to...), you my friend are actually a USC fan
who loves to stir the pot between BYU and Utah. You would, of course,
recognize a truly bad team, cheering for USC. It is a singular honor, worthy of
Trojan fans, that your team played in a bowl against a team with a losing
record. And lost. To the same Ramblin' Wreck that KVN and Hoffman
destroyed. At home. The announcer had a fabulous line. USC wanted
to be playing a team from the south in a Monday bowl game. They were hoping for
next Monday and a team from the SEC.
Cody Hoffman and Kyle Van Noy are two BYU players who have earned our highest
respect. Not only for how sucessful they have been on the field, but for
showing honor and loyalty by making a sacrifice to stay and play in college
their senior year! This is why I love college football so much because of great
young student athlets like these two gentlemen!. Thanks guys and best wishes to
you for a happy New Year!. Lots of happy BYU fans tonight!!!!!!!
Great news for cougar nation. It reminds me of that basketball player a few
years back, think if Jimmer would have passed on his Sr year. His decision is
very telling of his feelings about BYU and his teammates.
thank you for good news. not to worried about our d team but o team need to be
work on NOW!!!
GoBanana, I understand your dislike for teams and players, but until you see the
ravaging effects of cancer, let's simply not even joke about these guys or
any others curing cancer. I see it daily and spend thousands of hours looking
for a cure. These guys are young football players who simply try their hardest
on the field and apparently in the classroom.
The best news ever!! Thanks Van Noy, excitement already building for next year.
Heal up, gear up!
Although selfishly I'm excited that Hoffman and KVN decided to return, I
have to think history shows this is a very risky decision. It will be tough for
KVN to top 2012, but I will be excited again to see him play again.
re: Proud Ute - "I want the tds to bring their best and win or lose withouth
the inevitable coulda, woulda, shoulda's we've gotten the last 3
years."With two of the last three games coming down to the final
play, you'll always hear coulda, woulda, shoulda. Just like the Ute
basketballers said about the BB game this yes. And yes, we woulda won in 2010
if we coulda blocked the Ute coming around the end. And yes, we shoulda been
able to hit the FG to force OT in 2012. But I wish Bronco wouldn'ta played
Nelson, cause I think we coulda won with Hill. But U have to admit,
2010 and 2012 were pretty exciting games that U are willing to trade away to
watch your team take on Fresno St.
When Mildred speaks... Utes listen! LOLGreat news with Van Noy on
board next year! Yet another wise decision by a young man weighing his
options.Great day to be a Cougar fan.
Uncle RicoSorry, but your logic is flawed. Head-to-head only matters
when used as a tie-breaker for similar records.Utah(5-7) <
USC(7-6) < Ga Tech(7-7) < BYU(8-5)Some day our little
brothers on the hill will figure that one out. Here's a clue
though:Bowl WINNER > no bowl
Utahute72, if you look at the Cougars schedule a 10-2 record could do it, but
probably won't. I don't think they win 10 games but they'll have
the defense and a better quarterback so they could have a chance. Very
happy he's coming back next year, such a difficult schedule, we need
everyone we can next year.
We appreciated the humble manner this Linebacker goes about his business. He
will go down as one of the best BYU has ever had. Thanks for coming back so we
can see you play: receiver in the red zone, touchdown playmaker in the endzone
and quarterback sacker in the backfield of the opponent.
Congratulations to the fact that there were only a couple of ugly Ute trolls on
this article! This is great news for BYU, Coach Mendenhall, and all
of us BYU loyal Cougars. Go Cougars!
You people on here need to understand that Mildred in fillmore is nothing but a
troll trying to be cute but in reality is just a hater and loves to be
sarcastic probably just a 12 year old boy playing on moms laptop, ignore her
Re: scenic viewUtah beat BYU by 3.Notre Dame beat BYU by 3.So by your logic Utah = Notre Dame
KVN > Manti Te'o
Lest Scotsman, UtahUte72 and Brave Sir Robin start hyperventilating, they should
recognize that Mildred from Fillmore is a notorious troll, a wannabe Ernest T
Bass without the flair. Nobody on this thread is predicting a 10-win season, and
given the level of competition next year I would be happy with 8 wins. Those bemoaning lost income for van Noy because of Barkley – well, first
of all, the draft is not for a few more months, so we still don’t know how
it will all shake out. Furthermore, a linebacker is more of a solo performer
than a quarterback. The quarterback depends on an offensive line, good
receivers, reliable help from the running backs in both blocking and running,
whereas all the scouts will know going in that everyone will be double or
triple-teaming Kyle and account for it. The extra year certainly didn’t
hurt Lotulolei at all. As for Cody Hoffman being a 1st or 2nd round
pick at this point, that is sort of like predicting a 10-win season. He simply
is not ready. Austin Collie could skip a year because he was groomed for it from
toddlerhood. Cody is still raw – huge talent but unpolished.
Great news. But unless there are changes to fix the offense, next year
will be more of the same -- wins over weak teams, close games against marginal
teams, and losses vs. good teams. Kyle can't be expected to score two
touchdowns in every game!
Scenic viewYou messed up the BYU and Georgia tech scores...BYU won 41-17
Ga Tech versus BYU and USCPassing 40 / 75Rushing 117 / 294Total Yds 157 / 369Final ScoresBYU 22 Ga Tech 12USC 7
Ga Tech 21BYU's Top 10 defense was legit. Can't
say as much for the "mighty" PAC 12 Trojans. The best the PAC
12 can do in bowls now is 4-4, with 3-5 likely.
Having the 2 bests players from this year return for next year makes BYU a much
better team next year than they would be otherwise. Nothing more. Nothing less.
The ONLY ones touting BCS are the tiresome Ute trolls like Mildred, Ernest, and
Sir Robin. Not the BYU faithful.
Best of luck to KVN and Hoffman.Sincere hopes they make it through next
season without career ending injuries.I want the tds to bring their best
and win or lose withouth the inevitable coulda, woulda, shoulda's
we've gotten the last 3 years.
Great tribute to the integrity of Cody and KVN, the BYU coaching staff and the
value of a BYU education. As an aside, it will probably increase their monetary
value in the draft and the Dingwell-fears of QBs on next years schedule.
RE: Mildred in Filmore- "With KVN and Hoffman, we should win atleast 10
games again and be headed to a BCS bowl." Slow down just a bit. Even with
these two great players returning, let's keep things in perspective. If
they keep Doman and his inept offensive scheme, in no way to they stand a chance
of a BCS bowl. Any non-qualifying conf. team, particularly an independent, has
to run the table w/ an undefeated record to sniff BCS.
His situation is a lot like Manti Teo's. We can only hope for a similar
Obviously, some people can't see past the sarcasm in Mildred in
Wow ... Hoffman I understood but KVN surprises me. Congrats to all Cougar
football fans, that really is some good news for all of you. As a Ute fan it
would've been nice if they weren't around next year.
This reminds me a certain decision by Harold Arcenaux. Good for fans, bad for
As a Cougs fan, I LOVE that Hoffman and, especially, Van Noy is returning.
However, I'm also curious what their pre-draft NFL analysis came back with?

Re: Mildred in FillmoreYou also predicted that Riley Nelson would
win the Heisman this year.
News of Kyle Van Noy coming back next year is the best possible belated
Christmas present for BYU football fans.
KVN and Cody just want another tun at Utah! I hope we beat them next year.
I'm not understanding how you all are arriving at the conclusion that
having KVN and Hoffman back all of a sudden makes BYU a lock for a BCS game.
Weren't they both on the team the last 3 years when BYU didn't go to a
BCS game? Have they even beaten Utah in their careers? Somebody explain to me
why returning the two "best" players from a bad team will somehow turn
it into a good team...
Utahute72.Better check your facts. The undefeated requirement is
ONLY for the BCS Championship game. At large births are open to BYU and Notre
Dame at 10-2.I am absolutely thrilled that these great players are
coming back to finish their business. Go Cougars and I wish you the very best
of fortune next season. It has to be fun. I only plead that Doman learn well
from the last two seasons of poor coaching on his part. I don't want to
break in a new guy for this upcoming season, but I do want to see 2000% better
performance on the OC job.
I CAN NOT WAIT for Kyle Van Noy and Cody Hoffman to cure cancer now that they
are back for their senior season.
Anytime a kid can go pro and collect the money I think they should. Matt Barkley
lost millions coming back. Chances are with an upgraded schedule KVN wont have
the same year.
Combined with Hoffmans earlier announcement, this is the best news I've
heard for BYUs football!I have no problems with Bronco and Doman.
The future looks brighter than ever!
Sorry, Mildred, as an independent not named Notre Dame, BYU will have to go
undefeated to make it to a BCS bowl, 10-2 won't do it.
I can't believe Hoffman is staying...he would have been like a 1st or 2nd
round pick easily. Probably the best receiver to come out of byu in a long long
Yess! Now, one more announcement and I'm set for 2013 - Doman NOT
My prayers have been answered!I thought that KVN would go pro for
sure. But, I am so happy and elated to hear that he will return to
BYU next year along with Cody Hoffman.Go Blue!
I was so excited to hear that Hoffman was coming back last week, but getting
Hoffman and KVN back is awesome. To get our #1 offensive player and our #1
defensive player back, when both could have gone pro, is mind boggling. Hoffam
and KVN will impact the Cougs more next year than any 4 or 5 star recruits would
have. And we need them with our AQ conference like schedule. Someone also hinted that Eathyn Manumaleuna may get a medical redshirt for
last season. Does anyone know if this is true?
Haha, I like the optimism. Having Van Noy and Hoffmand didn't equate to
ten wins or a BCS game this year but next year it will for sure.
Great news for BYU. Van Noy will likely be a preseason FIRST TEAM All-American.
And with plenty of chances to play big-name opponents on national TV.
Definitely good exposure for the Cougars in 2013.
I have to admit, I'm blown away! I love the idea of being able to see KVN
play another season, but I think he may regret this decision if his intent is to
play in the league
Cody and Kyle showing the importance of loyalty and teamwork. They could
certainly go pro this coming season and make some good money, but instead they
sacrifice. It is my hope that they will be rewarded with not only a diploma,
but also a great season next year with the Cougars and a sense of pride and
satisfaction they can carry with them a lifetime. I applaud your decision! Go,
With KVN and Hoffman, we should win atleast 10 games again and be headed to a
Kyle, you will go down as one of the greatest Cougars of all time. You had
already cemented your legacy after your junior season, but your decision to play
four years shows how much the program means to you. Can't wait to watch
your senior season!!! A winning record against one of the toughest schedules in
team history is a real possibility with Hoffman and KVN coming back!
#1, #2, and now #3 all returning!2013 is going to be exciting!Go Cougs!
Great news for all BYU fans and a scary prospect for all 2013 BYU opponents!Welcome back KVN!
