I'm paraphrasing here (I think it is CS Lewis): "Greed takes no satisfaction of having something ... only having more of it than the next man"

That quote alone, if you believe it valid, covers all aspects of this meandering abstract of econ 101: Utility, when consumption goes beyond that "sufficient for our needs" is more correctly defined as marginal utility and inherently zero sum.

Barrier to entry is for the most part accurately described as a double edged sword. When it is used as a means for controlling "utility" instead of tool for protection, then it causes us to be "lifted up in pride". Professional athletes, ironically, is a prime example (the Jordan Rules) of segregation of talent combined with selective marketing to prop it up.

Now, to the blogs: Yes, self consumption IS greedy when that consumption clearly falls under marginal utility. How many homes (Mr. Romney) is "sufficient for his needs"? Is what he earned to enable this "utility" justified when the activity denies thousands of others the opportunity to earn? According to Laissez Faire principles it is. An unchecked free market ("natural barriers") does not help a society. Look no further than the BOM

Self consumption is greedy? Well it depends on who is consuming! Only liberals think they should be the ones who consume what other people have earned, anyone else has no right to consume anything and if they do, they are “greedy”.

Mountanman, you might want to take a good look at the percentage of Utahans who are receiving freebies, either thru the State, the Feds or the LDS church and rethink what you said about "only liberals think they should be the ones who consume what other people have earned" .. last I looked the State of Utah seems to pride itself on being conservative.
