Stang, Stang, Stang, tisk... haven't you paid attention that past couple years? USU is back, prior to 1990 USU never trailed the overall series, and now USU is back to form from being dismantled due to prior conference affiliations..

You just keep thinking that. The truth is the aggie fan's are totally disrespectful to everyone that comes into Logan.

    @ toosmartforyou

How about BYU fans throwing a little girly fit by throwing trash all over the court because they didn't like the refs? Sure go back 4 years ago to when USU was not very good at anything...

Also, get YOUR facts straight... BYUs starters were in the whole game. The dogs were never "called off"... BYUs linemen struggled all game containing Diondre Borel...

The Utes were relatively competitive in their side of the conference last year...

Utah State fans are awesome. The Aggies will be a great addition to the MWC. Looking forward to MWC championship banners hanging in the Spectrum. Go Big Blue!!!

I think the fan's were being both disrespectful and clueless. I've wittnessed it first hand.

    @ Ut-Hawaii Alum

With respect to youer point about USU having "respectful fans, I suppose you weren't in attendance the year BYU defeated USU in Logan by a score of 34 - 17 (or thereabouts) and at the start of the 4th quarter the USU studentbody started chanting "Over-Rated; over-rated" ay BYU. The funny part about that cheer is that at the time, BYU was creaming tha Aggies 34 - 0 after 3 quarters. So either USU fans wer being disrespectful or clueless or both. Onkly after BYU called off the dogs anf gave up a couple of cheap scores did it even look like a game; until that time it resembled more of a interesting scrimmage.

Don't ever let the facts get in the way of your opinion, however, as the Utes will need your type of support as they slog their way to mediocrity year-after-year in the mighty PAC 10.2, just like Arizona and Arizona State have experienced.

    Good luck to you.

Wow, are those "Crimson colored-glass" are really thick that you're wearing. Utah dropped USU long before BYU did, so playing them again is because they think USU is a cupcake team. Utah insisted on a 2 - 1 deal with BYU after the Utes entered the PAC 12, so the Ute fans are hypocrites if they blast anyone else as being "arrogant" for suggesting such a schedule. In case you haven't noticed, USU's stadium is SMALL and BYU's is BIG and USU always schedules large playes to play, like Nebraska, because they need a large amount of money when they share gate receipts. Unlike BYU's stadium and ESPN deal, and Utah's PAC 12 TV deal, USU has no such source of income. So USU is happy to play BYU because the fans attend and enjoy that game. Sound to good to be true to a Ute fan? Considering before Lavell came the old rivalry was Utah-USU how do you explain switching rivals, other than you couldn't stand losing to BYU? Now you can switch again to Colorado---they certainly have your number, apparently; enjoy losing to them.

I am thrilled for USU, a great school, super respectful fans, with a football team on the rise. As an ardent Utah fan, I'm actually worried about playing Utah State. Although, Utah's recent recruiting has been stellar, USU can play some great football and are extremely well coached. I am also grateful that Utah is contracted fairly in the upcoming years with Utah State, unlike arrogant BYU, who negotiated 2 for 1 deals with USU. That appalls me to no end. In fact, USU is a better program than BYU currently. Hopefully Utah State will tell BYU "goodbye" sooner than later, like the U will be doing so shortly. CONGRATS USU! We Utes love our team up north, unless you are playing us! Gooooooo Aggies!

I am very happy that the MWC gave Utah State a mulligan, and re-issued a conference invitation. Personally, I thought the moment Utah gave the MWC notice, they should have invited you, Fresno St, Houston, and SMU. While TCU would have inevitably left to the Big 12 [in which case adding either Nevada, Hawai'i, or Southern Mississippi would have been apropos], I'm not sure the Big East would have been successful at poaching BSU, SDSU, Houston, and SMU with that confederation of teams, and the MWC would have been much stronger.

Oh well. It didn't happen that way, so it's really neither here nor there at this point. I think you'll make a great fit for the MWC. Congratulations Aggies!

"BYU was long from the MWC and its 1.5 mil tv payout. Last season their tv revenue was at least 10 times that."

Nope. More like nearly 5 times that. You cougar fans keep forgetting your ESPN contract only pays for the games they broadcast in Provo. And, according to cougar-homer/beat writer Jay Drew of the SLTrib, their contract pays between $800K and $1.2M....again, per HOME game. Idaho St. was not aired by ESPN so they payed you $0. Utah and TCU [neutral] would have most likely grossed you $1.2M ea, and UCF and USU could have conceivably netted you $1M. None of the other Home games were worth more than $800K, and your bush-league bowl payed only $600K. All together, I estimate you grossed just under $7.5M, which is still nearly $6M more than what you would have collected in the MWC.

Still, it wasn't the 10-times as you fantasized.

    Congrats USU!

I don't see what would be the big deal about adding NMSU and Idaho so a championship game could be played now. If Boise State and SDSU want to cancel the Big East deal, then it would be 14 teams, it would still be good. It's not like Wyoming, CSU, and New Mexico are big markets--it just makes geographical sense.

BYU might want to rejoin in a few years if the Big 12 doesn't come calling soon. They could take UTEP and make a 16-team conference. These conference alignments are going to make it tougher for BYU to pull off an independent schedule out west, so joining a conference may become a necessity. Either that, or they will have a heavy dose of MAC, Sun Belt, and some C-USA teams to fill up the schedule--which is perfectly fine if they want to go that way. In the words of Sheryl Crow, "If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad."

Oh well, Idaho can rejoin the Big Sky and NMSU could probably get a Sun Belt invite. Good luck Aggies! Go get'em.

slc sports "fan" is a BYU hater/utah "fan" who goes by a couple of different minkers. He used to go by #1 BYU SLC fan or something like that. He posts as if he has inside info with the church leadership and their intentions for BYU. He constantly beats the drum of dropping the athletic program at BYU and tries to claim that is what a segment of the 12 Apostles want to do. I generally ignore him but occasionally he is worth mocking.

I'm fairly sure he also goes by several other screen names and personalities. As I said either ignore him or mock him. Ignoring him is easy but mocking him is fun!

had to smile at slc sports fan rant about BYU. His idea of what BYU "is" misses reality by a longshot. Not sure how USU joining the MWC conference two years ago would have kept BYU "in its place". As I remember, BYU was trying to keep the WAC together so they could have a place for their non-football sports. BYU was long from the MWC and its 1.5 mil tv payout. Last season their tv revenue was at least 10 times that. Perhaps the previous writer needs to take a field trip to Provo.

It seems like college athletics (thanks to the BCS) is unfortunately becoming the haves and the have nots...and being from the state that was the dead last to establish Classes in high school sports, I generally find it sad.

But, beyond the BCS conferences are some awesome teams and conferences, A10, MEAC, MWest, Southland...good, competitive teams and conferences! I for one am very happy for's a much more competitive conference in all sports than the WAC.

Conferences are good! Harlem Globetrotters, WWF and BYU football are for entertainment value.

Goods job Aggies...beat the tar out of New Mexico in basketball and everyone in football and move that conference forward.

This article is about USU, not BYU and those who don't like the Cougars. So deal with it.

I am happy being in the Mountain West, as long as they don't treat Utah State like the red headed step child. They treated Boise State poorly, telling them what they could and couldn't do and I hope the Aggies aren't treated the same.

I could not disagree with you more. The MWC is a great move for Utah State and they will compete VERY well with the teams in the conference. You say they have a small TV market and a cold climate. As opposed to Laramie, Wyoming and Ft. Collins, Colorado? In fact, if you haven't ever visited USU campus, it is a fantastic place to go to school. As further evidence of their ability to recruit, USU, just this week, had 3 players drafted into the NFL. That's more than any team in the MWC or the WAC or BYU or Utah. This is the foothold USU needs to get a seriously competitive program again.

Any way you look at it, this is good for the Aggies and for Utah. It's a long time coming and sadly they have had to play second fiddle for too long to Utah and BYU. Once the great football power in Utah, hopefully this will enable them to improve recruiting and once again take their place with the great programs in the state.

  • #1 SLC Sports Fan Salt Lake City, UT

This is the best possible move for Utah State. It's only too bad they didn't agree to do this two years ago when the opportunity was presented to them, since it would have assured BYU staying in the league as well as the the old Skyline alignment of Wyoming, Colorado State and New Mexico. It would also keep BYU in its place as an undergraduate "Teaching" university as opposed to being out flirting with research universities like Texas, Kansas, Iowa State and Oklahoma in the Big 12. Better yet turn Provo into Rexburg!

@Stenar. The Aggies are full members in all sports except gymnastic. Hawaii is the football only school.
Congrats to the Aggies and Coach Andersen. It will be exciting to see what this does for recruiting. Knowing what conference you're playing in should make an impact right away.

Good move, Mountain West Conference! Great news for the Aggies (And best wishes from a Ute fan!) I felt it an honor to play Air Force in anything! And now a renewal of traditional opponents! And a major step up for the basketball program. National attention to games with SDSU, New Mexico, and UNLV.

This is obviously a good move for USU, as they get out of the dying WAC, and into a more stable conference. Sadly, it's mostly the conference they left (at least before conference realignment started), but this is a major, major step up in basketball. That is, UNM and UNLV bring nothing to football, but a whole lot to basketball, something that should be very good for the Aggies. Sure, the Spectrum is tough, but I can't wait for USU fans to see what the Thomas & Mack and the Pit are like.

The best part of being a part of the MWC is that Air Force gets to visit Logan. They always bring cool jets (with a flyover), the falcon, the cadets march on your campus. The worst part about it is that you have to go to Laramie.

I honestly hope the MWC can elevate itself as a conference. The fans need to show up more than in the past including last year. That small stadium should be packed week in and week out with Aggie fans. I just bought my tickets for the Utah game in Logan. Very few tickets left for that game.

Somehow I'm not so sure USU should get all that excited. I wouldn't bet a wooden nickel that the MWC will survive either, and USU probably had a better TV deal with the WAC than they will get with the MWC. But, in theory, it's a step up. USU is in a tough spot, they have a very small TV market, they are out of the way, they are in a cold climate, and they will likely never be able to compete in recruiting with the teams they compete against.

The MWC is today what the WAC was 10 years ago. This should not be spun as a step up, but a move from a dying mid-major conference to a stable mid-major conference and that USU is luckier than Idaho. But they could very well be on the same sinking lifeboat as the Vandals.

When USU got into the WAC, I felt like they finally had a solid position in the Athletics world. I now have the same type of feelings. Hopefully this will be the boost they need to get their football program, and all other sports on solid ground for a long time.

  • Johnny Triumph American Fork, UT

Good for USU, it's about time!

With the WAC's sad state what will this mean for BYU's ability to schedule late season games? Will MWC beat up BYU for leaving and restrict its teams from playing BYU? Or at least make scheduling late season games vs BYU very very difficult?

    May 4, 2012 10:44 a.m.

I wonder if USU will splash the MWC logo all around Logan and on everything they sell a la my Utes. I love the Utes, but it's time to get over the Pac 12 logo on everything.

I love that USU is making this move and am excited to welcome old foes and rivals back into the state. Cowboy Joe, New Mexico, and AFA were sorely missed last year.
