Let's see... Texas wins/ties the Big 12 (one loss to OK, who drops another conference game) with a loss to BYU, Utah wins the Pac-12 with only a single non-conference loss to BYU, TCU wins the MWC (as expected) with only a single non-conference loss to BYU, Boise State has only a loss to TCU and Hawaii takes an undefeated record into their loss to BYU... this changes your bowl predictions.

BYU wouldn't accept a Big XII invite even if they got it. Not because they don't want it. Because they have been pumping independence for so long, and they would screw the WCC if they left now.

Timing is all wrong, and it may cost BYU a spot in a real conference.

The Big 12 is looking less and less like a viable option for BYU as time goes by. If they ever did get an invitation to it, it would probably in a situation similar to how Boise State, Fresno, and Nevada were invited to the MWC. By the time they show up, everyone has left the party. Why would BYU want to join a conference in which the best competition is Kansas, Iowa State, and Baylor? Independence is the way to go. If enough additional schools go independent, there will be changes to how independents can access the BCS anyway.

The way that the money is distributed in the Big12, I can't see anybody wanting to join. Most of the money is unevenly distributed to the Texas schools, which is why Nebraska and Colorado were so eager to leave.

Rather than the Big12 invite BYU, I see the opposite happening. If TxA&M does get serious about the SEC, I see the Big12 going away as some of the elite schools like USC and Texas move more to the Independent route. There is more money to be had there if you have out-grown your conference.

Starfarer. I'm going to take a gander and say that your comment will be ignored by BYU trolls. They won't stop commenting on Utah articles because they can't resist.

Ute fans like posting on Y boards regarding our runaway superiority because we know how arrogant and narcissistic your fanbase is. Your fans have been aggressively gloating at us Utes over your "Independence" -- despite residing in a substantially lesser position than we -- so one could only imagine the degree of smugness had our stations been reversed.

But the situation has NOT been reversed, so here we are, giving our bratty little brothers a taste of their own medicine.

Besides, we Ute fans know how our barbs affect you all. It's like rattling the monkeys' cage and watching you all go crazy.

    It's fun stuff really.

    Naval Vet

If utah has the better situation....

Why are you posting on BYU boards trying to convince us?

    We don't really care.

Here's what we know. We are not in the same conference anymore. You don't matter to us anymore. We don't need you to win to help make our conference look better.

Yet, ute trolls still come to BYU boards to convince us that they are better than us, that they have the better deal, and that their bowl pictures are brighter.

If you really believe that, why is it necessary to come here and tell us?

Why not just go read your ute articles and bask in your opulence?

This is why you are always called the little brothers. No matter what you get in life you will always be measuring yourself against BYU.

If you really had it better, walk away, say nothing and just be better.

I suggest the same things to BYU fans. Quit posting on ute boards, walk away.

However, if ute trolls continue to post on BYU articles, let them have it. Do not let ute trolls into our house and talk smack.

but don't do it on their articles.

El Paso is lovely in December. Of course the Sun Bowl is more prestigious. They don't even need fireworks, they can listen to the gunfire across the river during pregame festivities.

    Naval Vet:

Nice spin but that's not what Utah fans have said. They are so adamant that they will be IN the the PAC 12 Champ game and IN the Rosebowl they even show up on BYU articles to say so. Don't be so condescending to assume we haven't noticed the difference.

Wa State, and Arizona play for the Rosebowl every year too.

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA
    Aug. 11, 2011 8:40 a.m.

You are aware that the Sun Bowl is a much more prestigious bowl game than Armed Forces Bowl, aren't you? Plus, Ute fans have been making fun of you since long before we were even invited to join the Pac-12.

As far as the Rose Bowl is concerned, Utah will play for one every year from now on. Try not to confuse "playing for a Rose Bowl berth" with "will play in the Rose Bowl". The former is a lock; the latter is a possibility.

On the flip side, it's a lock that you'll be "locked-out" of a BCS Bowl. It is NOT a lock that you'll play in the Armed Forces Bowl however. That's still classified under "possibility", since you'll still have to win 6-games first.

Yep. There's no question Utah has the better situation here:

Rivals > cougarboard-dot-com, deepshadesofblue-dot-com, Dick Harmon fantasies, et al.
    Sun Bowl > Armed Forces Bowl;
Rose Bowl possibility > no shot at a BCS Bowl

    @ Mildred in Fillmore:

Just out of curiosity when do you decide to use the Earnest T Bass handle vs. Mildred in Fillmore?

I love how the Ute fans use rivals as the all omniscient source for recruiting and preseason polls but now that their beloved rivals has them in the Sunbowl they hurry and make fun of BYU for playing in the armed forces bowl to try and get ahold of the narrative, as if we haven't noticed the prophetic prognostications over the last 8 months of them playing in the PAC12 Chmp game/Rose Bowl.

Also, why wouldn't BYU be projected to play in a bowl that they have already signed a contract to play in under certain provisions. BYU will not get a BCS bowl bid unless it is undefeated anytime in the next few years.

    Aug. 10, 2011 11:06 p.m.

It would be a wonderfully ironic situation if BYU joined the Big-12 and it would have nothing to do with religious bigotry and everything to do with power and money. Any invitation that would be extended would leave BYU in a subordinate position as far as conference earnings go. Texas won't accept any deal that does it leave it the top dog, at least in financial terms.

Taking a page of Roddy Piper's book; it's time for a reality check...

The B12 let CU & the Huskers partly due to geography. So, why would they invite the Y who is even further away?

Although I think the bowl projections are reasonable, less than 25% of them will turn out to be accurate. This time of year, with only baseball to watch, it is fun to speculate what might happen with college football.

This year, it would take a 12-0 record to get BYU in a BCS game. I think there's a chance of that happening, but agree the chances are slim. Too many tough games on the road and too much inexperience on the team that will lead to some mistakes.

Houston, Tulsa or So Miss would be good opponents in the Armed Forces Bowl. All would draw well in Dallas.

In the future, I can see BYU having a shot at a BCS bowl with one loss. In 2013 and beyond, they'll have more quality opponents to increase their SOS. That doesn't mean that they'll play 12, Top 25 teams. But it does mean you'll see teams like So. Miss replace Idaho State. And some of the rumors about teams like Wisconsin, Penn State and Nebraska will pan out. BYU's future schedule will look a lot like most AQ schools (SEC excluded), whick could lead to an 11-1 BCS birth.

"...who was arrested and suspended by coach Mack Brown."

Boy, college coaches are getting too much power if they can now arrest their own players. It's a difficult language, I know.

Unlike some BYU-haters who spam every BYU article with their hatred of all things BYU, most people in Big 12 country aren't religious bigots.

They have already given a thought to it. Most college football analysts agree that BYU is on a short list of potential additions should the Big 12 decide to expand to 12 teams again, and there are quotes from people in the Big 12 like the Oklahoma AD that confirm it. Does than mean BYU is a shoe-in? No. It just means they have been looked at, and will probably be looked again if the Big 12 ever decides to expand. I really don't think BYU is looking for an invitation to a BCS conference anymore though. I think they are committed to making independence work, and also to the WCC, at least for the foreseeable future. So in that sense we agree, BYU will probably not be joining the Big 12 anytime soon, if ever. And I am one Cougar fan who is just fine with that.

This just in; with Wynn and half the already thin offensive line going down, Utah's bowl projection was just changed to the salsa and chips bowl. Enjoy the holidays.

Yes, Utah is in a better situation than BYU with respect to the post season. Does that make you feel better about your life? Utah now has guaranteed access to a BCS bowl, while BYU must do what Utah was once required to do - go undefeated. Even then BYU is not guaranteed a BCS bowl invitation unless it is ranked in the BCS top 2 (which is absurd because then they would be playing in the NC game which by definition matches the BCS #1 and #2).

But, believe it or not, not everyone has drunk the BCS kool-aid and thinks that is the totality of college football. It is nothing more than a corrupt system designed to monopolize the bowl revenues for the largest schools. It is also an impediment to having a true playoff system and a true national champion. No other sport in the world has a system as absurd as the BCS. Some day the BCS system is going to be torn down and college football will have what it deserves, a post-season playoff like every other major college and professional sport.

It's kind of an easy to projection. If they beat all the WAC games at home, they will be in a bowl game and the only one they can go to is the finger-licking bowl game. Right?

The enjoyment will all come from utah trolls like you. We have known for months what bowl we would be playing in. Unless of course we go undefeated. I am not predicting that but I am sure you and your ilk will say that. However, you will try to make it seem like breaking bad news for us. However, the only bad news (or good news depending on how you look at it) is that utah will be relegated to the Sun Bowl. I though utah was going to win the pac12 chumpionship and win the Rose Bowl?

Say BYU wins 11 games--playing Tulsa in that bowl would be a bit of a bummer. On the other hand, 8 wins or less and I'm thinking fans and players will look forward to it.

Don't we play Tulsa in the next couple years? Maybe i'm thinking of somebody else. We had some fun games against Tulsa a few years back. I'd be fine playing them.

  • RepresentBlue West Jordan, UT
    Aug. 10, 2011 4:48 p.m.

That sounds like a pretty reasonable bowl projection. BYU's chances of a BCS bowl this season are slim to none so that means they will be playing in the Armed Forces Bowl provided they are bowl eligible, and Tulsa is a reasonable prediction for an opponent.

How was that mgr63? Was that hilarious enough for you?
