Besides having water stored along with water filters to clean it before drinking it, the healthy way to go as you travel through life is eating vegetarian and especially eating raw food. MREs (meals ready to eat) are meant for camping, hunting, hiking, or for survival in case of economic and societal collapse so there can not really be any raw and fresh food MREs. When it comes to preparing for long term food storage, it is good to have a variety of methods that are implemented by each homeowner. Besides doing your own canning and storing away dried grains in plastic containers with airtight gamma lids, it is good to have both freeze-dried food and MREs that are made for civilians by one of the contracted suppliers of military MREs. Although the supply of freeze-dried food is pretty much on back order there are still MREs for sale. So be sure and have a variety of items for your emergency food storage. You do not want to have menu fatigue from eating the same thing day in and day out.

When my husband and I were welfare agents in Central America we shared the account we had been told in the MTC: President Hinckley had been in South America (I don't recall which country) following a large earthquake where people were in long lines waiting for water. Pres. Hinckley is said to have said, "When are we going to teach our people to store water?" That became one of our main messages as we trained members in food and emergency storage.
