For you folks who must look at everything through the lens of "conservative" vs. "liberal", you're growing tiring. Please remember that "the state" is nothing more than YOU. What if this type of abuse were taking place at your neighbor's home? Have you involved yourself enough in the lives of those who live right next to YOU that you would have known been aware? Stop pointing fingers at all the "wrong" in the world and just start BEING the example. Love your neighbor as yourself.

I envy you who say that you cannot understand this. I can. I have seen much worse. I lived through a war where such depravity was common.

Mental illness in the abusers? Maybe. I would not jump too quickly to that conclusion. Surely the defense attorneys will claim it. But why not just allow for straight forward evil? It is but a far point on the scale. For some reason, the abusers chose this girl as an expression of their hate. Who knows why? Figure that out and you will know why so many Utahns favor ethnic cleansing for illegal aliens. Same mind pattern, just a more atrocious degree.

What does this have to do with conservatism? Very much. The type of conservatism that controls this state is but a few steps from totalitarianism and dictatorship. The tea party is so far to the right that it has met and passed the far left in its zeal for control and false freedom.

The depth of human cruelty never ceases to amaze me.

The reading comprehension and non-sequiter comments on this thread are astonishing.

They moved from out of state. How would DCFS even know they were here? She was 22 years old. Not a DCFS case. They moved from out of state. No other state agency would know. But if anyone knew, state, federal, neighbor, ANYONE would've done something.

These people are wicked, evil. Period. Jail and death are both too good for them, but death, when it comes, will send them to hell.

This is horrific and unimaginable treatment, even for a dog. The DLC (Disability Law Center) should start its investigations with Utah's CWS (child welfare services) where much of this is being allowed and with their knowledge. This department in Utah are the real killers of children and adults who they have investigated? and deemed false reporting.

The child welfare service are a for profit group of self interest greedy mongers. They ignore and overlook a lot of reported criminal activity with children but turn a blind eye for the fact that they don't want custody of the children and they get a share of child support payments made by the so called dead beat dads and income garnishing legal actions. They profit from others misery. And rather that turn over reported criminal actions on children to legal authority, they act as a legal authority to relocate children with problems with other family's with also serious problems.

Maybe its time that Utah legislators take another look at this department and how much criminal strife and neglect is being allowed. Then strip this group of being funded by their own private department of collections.

I am sick, how can people be so horrible. At least she is in the arms of her Heavenly Father now.

What does this have to do with being conservative? This is horrible abuse. It just makes me cry to think people can do this to another human being.

This is why I am not a hard core conservative. Gov't does have a responsibility to intervene in certain situations. This appears to an obvious example. That is not socialism, it is humanity.

I will never, ever understand how multiple people could all agree that this was appropriate treatment. It's shocking when there is one abuser, but more than one is incomprehensible. I hope all three are locked up for life and the juveniles receive intensive theraphy so they can fully heal and stop the cycle of abuse from continuing. They need to know this type of behavior is not normal and most certainly not okay.

Justducky, I thought it was the victim's mother too, when I first read this, but the other woman in the house was apparently the mother of the woman who was the abuser. Regardless, this was an absolutely incomprehensible situation. She was obviously sexually abused, too, in order to have a child. Her body might have been an adult, but her mind was not, so any sexual encounter would have been rape, as she was incapable of giving consent. I wonder who the father is.

Yes, many unanswered questions. I hope the abuser, and those who stood by and did nothing, will receive an appropriate punishment, and also that the children who had to witness such horrible events can be well taken care of, and receive the counseling they will doubtless need in order to NOT become abusers themselves. Very, very sad for all. At least the victim is now at peace, safe and happy.

And to think her own mother participated in the abuse makes it even more horrific. It's hard to imagine what the victim must have endured before she ultimately passed away.

I agree with Pipes and that was one of my first thoughts, how is it that a woman who can't even takes care of herself has a two year old daughter?
Did she give birth in a hospital? I would think this situation would have raised a big red flag to medical staff and Adult Protective Services would have been notified.

This story makes you want to hug your kids a little tighter and to be more aware of those in our society who lack the ability to protect themselves. If something doesn't seem right, as a family member or neighbor, take that extra minute to check it out.

Cut backs in medicaid don't help situations like this. Some people are just not capable of taking care of disabled people. No excuse for what happened, but Utah's record is nothing to be proud of.

No case workers, no one checking in on her? Who granted guardianship? There are a lot of questions in this case.

How is it that a woman suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome so severe that she can't take care of herself has a 2 year old daughter? Sounds like another form of abuse took place over 2 years ago.

The only justice here is life in prison without parole. Execution would be too easy for them. How could anybody do this to another human?

Truly scary stuff. How much of this was witness by the children, I wonder.
