First, congrats to the cougars on this win and on the season. As a Ute fan, I know what it feels like to be in your shoes. Enjoy it!

This BYU team finds ways to win. It's an important quality that seperates the contenders from the pretenders. I think they will enjoy a nice run in the tourney.

For the Utes, there is no where to go but up from here. I think larri3 is right. Utah has a couple of guys who could be NBA prospects. But there is just no coaching up there. Every game its "moral victories" "we are improving" "blah blah blah ball didn't go in the hoop blah blah blah!"

Utah doesn't have any seniors this year, so that is good. This year has been essentially new players coming together. Not much chemistry. At the same time, the chemistry should be further along then it is.

We need a coach with a creative offensive scheme.

I often wonder how could the Utes could be with a different coach. David Foster still doesn't have a single offensive move. The team seems to have no offensive players other than the occasional big man running out to set a pick. Usually the Utes just pass around the perimeter until the shot clock starts running out, and then somebody dribbles into traffic and throws up a prayer or takes a guarded three. I think there are at least two NBA prospects on Utah's roster, but with their lack of improvement, they'll be lucky to be noticed.

I wondered if Jimmer had the flu Saturday. He seemed like he wasn't thinking straight (I felt that way recently with severe sinus pressure/flu). Plus Rose gave him a big rest late in the first half.

Anyway, kudos to Charles A. and Jackson E. for GREAT play.

P.S. Didn't it seem like Utah went into stall offense toward the end when they should have been hustling down court and shooting quickly for a chance to win?

"When Utes talk about tournament success at least we keep it to the most recent decade."
How about we talk about the last 5 years, the last two years, this year, the last game?

What are you trying to spin?

The Utes are not going to make the CBI this year, unless as a novelty mid-major team.

Howard, what a great time to be a ute!!!

I for one will gladly concede all of the moral victories to Utah. I think the Cougar Nation will be quite happy to take Ws instead.

Jimmer drove past O'Brian almost at will. But Utah had the two 7 footers back there. That was Boylan's plan - put a tall guy on him to keep him from shooting 3 pointers and then cover him in the lane with a 7 footer and another big guy. But that left them open to easy layups on the other end and many open jumpers when running the Y offense. but believe me, O'Brian's defense was not what caused Jimmer's poor shooting.

Wow.... You cougs are way overconfident! First, I'm certain that every one of you would take the WCC over the PAC12. The WCC is a 1 team league on most years so please don't flatter yourselves. But I'm sure it'll will be an easy sale to recruits in reference to playing in all those sweet high school gyms.

As for Utah, Stew Morrill isn't coming to Utah. Utah won't want a coach that is close to retirement most likely.

Hey cougs, how many of you were born last time byu won more than one game in the NCAA's? Hey Aggies, you've won 1 NCAA game since 1971. Utah might be struggling now but they'll be back. It all starts with the firing of Boylen!

Great crowd at the MC. Very loud. Utes played hard but didn't handle the ball well enough to win. I see the Utes doing much better next year if these players continue to develop. PAC12 will be tough but you'll enjoy the road trips. Great locales mostly. We Cougars will be fine also. Playing in Cal, Ore and Wash will be great. Jimmer looked very disoriented most of the game. Just a few minutes of the real Jimmer and Utes were in the rear view mirror. Very fun game to watch. I'd much rather see a close game than a blowout. Enjoy the day off Cougars. You've earned it.

@Rock Of The Marne "Kind of sounds like Utah football and beating BYU last year."

You really need to think more carefully. That "kind of" part is really digging deep. You see the difference is that BYU was at .500 in football and your utes are far below that plus I do not see your team winning much the rest of the way, maybe against TCU, but that's it.

When I see Utah play as well as they did tonight and execute a solid game plan I am surprised they have not won another 5 or 6 games. Good game Utes, and great win BYU.

I was very impressed with the Utes today -- they kept with the Cougars until the 8:00 minute mark when the previously limp Jimmer Ferdette took over.

Nothing bad to say about the Utes. They played hard, did well, and gave a good showing to their school. Really, that's all we can hope for short of a win.

And yes, I remember that 1-26 season and I also remember Bick Rick Majerus. Sports has their ups-n-downs. We'll be down again one day. What matters is how quickly we pick ourselves up.

    Congrats Utes. You did well.

    RE: Outsideview

You may rest easy tonight in the sure knowledge that coach Morril from Utah State will NEVER coach the Utes. It would be a step down in so many ways.

    Go Aggies!

Tit for tat.......such silly comments from both sides. It was a good game, leave it at that. Utah came to play but unfortunately, BYU was better today and that is all that matters. I am sure there isn't a single BYU player who is crying about winning only by 13 instead of 30. They wouldn't even care if they had won by 1. A win is a win no matter how you look at. You can't sugar coat it and moral victory doesn't make any losing team feel better. And for crying out loud, keep Football out of it, this is not Football so both of ya get over it. As for SDSU, I expect them to win on their home court, they should but, if we can get the victory, that will be awesome. I am sure BYU is not going in to the game all cocky or anything, they still have two games before that to even worry about SDSU. Go COUGARS.

Tonight I saw a bunch of "Sunday School boys" playing quicker, faster, and considerably more athletic than their Ute opponents. BYU had a tough time finding the hoop but they sure could create turnovers and run the court on the Utes.

    "Runnin' Utes?" What an oxymoron!

It will be a very, very, very long time before "Ute fans wish they were back playing some teams that are actually good"!
We will see how good you are when you go to the NCAA. Until then, you might consider choosing your words a little more carefully! GOOD LUCK with that.

I am afraid that Boylin will be replaced by Morrill from Utah State and then coach Rice will go be the coach at USU.

    It could happen.

"Jumps all over BYU if 1984 is mentioned..."

Utah was in the Sweet Sixteen in 2005.

The last time BYU made the Sweet Sixteen was 1981.

When Utes talk about tournament success at least we keep it to the most recent decade.

The truly sad thing about the Utes going to the Pac10 and the Cougs going to WCC, is that this boorish trash talking will continue because some fans have nothing better to do than to belittle either team.
    Good game Cougs.
    Better luck next time, Utes.
My best to both schools in all of their endeavors.

Let's see UtahDerek, 9 out of 10 and we are overrated?? What does that make you? I know, you have done better in the tourney - blah blah blah. For a fan base that jumps all over BYU if 1984 is ever mention, you sure like living in the past!

Congratulations to the Cougars. Note: I didn't watch the game. Not interested in b-ball. But I can congratulate the Cougars when they beat us.

"Just remember that the "number 7 team in the country" was tied to us coming off a loss to san diego st by 30 at your place with 6 minutes left."

That tells me that San Diego might be awfully difficult for BYU to get a win there. Cougars better be up for that game and not be over confident if they want to win.

It's funny how quickly the whiners on the hill forget about BYU's 25-point beat down of the Utes on their home.

I wouldn't make too much out of only losing by 13, with Jimmer having one of his worst games of the season.

BYU smack talk never gets old. Just remember that the "number 7 team in the country" was tied to us coming off a loss to san diego st by 30 at your place with 6 minutes left. If anything you should be talking about your own team and just how over rated you really are.

    Re: Mountainman56

    On ESPN?

Look at the WCC time slots on ESPN.

The country will be able to watch the Cougars if they are willing stay up till mid night.

Oh and btw, losing skids end. Remember 1-25?

Utah's losing streak will end in the PAC 12.

BYU's winning streak will likely continue in the obscurity of the WCC.

Given a choice I'd pick the PAC 12...

And so would you, if you had the choice.

Oh, and about the NCAA appearance of St. Mary's and Gonzaga in the tournament... They win when they get to the tournament.

BYU hasn't won meaningfully in the tournament in decades.

This year will be no different.

  • Mountainman56 Alpine, UT
    Feb. 12, 2011 8:52 p.m.

    Sir Robin

St. Mary's is a regular in the NCAA Tournament and I doubt that BYU will be able to beat them 9 out of 10 times like they've done to Utah or average 19 points per win like they've done over Utah this year. Yes, the competition will definitely be stiffer in the WCC than Utah has been able to bring to the MWC. Not only that but the two games per year against St. Mary's will probably be on ESPN or BYU TV. Either way, the entire country will be able to watch them play!

  • Brave Sir Robin San Diego, CA
    Feb. 12, 2011 7:08 p.m.

Dick is right - these two programs are heading in different directions. Utah is heading to the PAC12, BYU is heading to the Big West.

@Eddie: From another point of view: BYU is having its best season ever, Utah is having its worst season ever, and yet BYU barely pulled out a win, at home.

Have fun playing St. Mary's twice a year.

Utah played very well and they have some good atheletes...I expect better things from them next season.
