Is it possible to wear out a DVR? The OU fans said it wouldn't be close bit they were wrong. They should have a bit more confidence

    To 9:48 p.m.,

It costs more than $1 million to get the entire BYU football team to Texas and back!

  • re: re: to Jerry & Shecky
    Sept. 9, 2009 10:50 a.m.

BYU got $1.5 million, OU got $2.5 million for that game. So what was your point again? Yep, thought so.

  • Congrats from Ute fan
    Sept. 8, 2009 2:18 p.m.

I was one of those non-believing Ute fans who didn't think BYU had a chance. I was wrong and I now admit it. In fact, I'm really worried about the season-end Utah vs. BYU matchup. I think BYU has the talent to be a contender and I'm worried sick about a possible Provo win. C'm on Utah, start preparing now or you won't have a shot. This BYU team is good.

This was one of the few times I was pulling for the Cougs. Way to go BYU!!!

  • re: to Jerry & Shecky
    Sept. 7, 2009 9:48 p.m.

The irony is that, as I understand it, they Y was paid nearly $1 million for the opportunity to play OU. As long as you're getting 7 digit payouts to play on the road, wouldn't get too uppity and proud. (something about pride going before the fall may fit in here, ya think?)

  • Hey BYU..
    Sept. 7, 2009 5:14 p.m.

Great win! Now you are 3-16 against ranked teams. You eaked out a one point victory against a very overrated Oklahoma team. I would say do it in January when it matters but you wont get that chance beacause the entire MWC is pathetic. And please stop with all the BCS talk. it is a long season and you still have FSU, TCU and Utah to worry about!

  • Re: Anonymous
    Sept. 7, 2009 3:43 p.m.

Hey if they played Florida the way they played OU last night they may have made the game respectable with them, too.

  • Out of Utah
    Sept. 7, 2009 2:28 p.m.

A few observations not mentioned here:

    1. OK was playing with a converted TE at Center. Not only was this center small, he was confused. Center calls the OL plays. The OK OL was confused all night. Their confusion led to Clausen's big hit.Jaime Hill's defense out-thunk OK's poor confused converted center. This nullified any edge they had in talent.

    2. It's the OL that makes a great quarterback. Bradford's numbers last year were the result of a great OL. No OL = no Heisman. End of story.

    3. Here's hoping BYU can put this win in perspective. They did not play a perfect game. Coach M said it best: they played a "gritty" game. Whether this is a one-game fluke or a sustained effort over a whole season only time will tell.

Great job BYU. After last year sugar bowl and now this there is no excuses for the Mtn West not getting an automatic bid. Good job. Good luck rest of the year. If you lose a game it ends up meaning nothing. Great win!!

  • I was there!!!
    Sept. 7, 2009 11:31 a.m.

I was at the game, drove down from Utah, and it was amazing!

A great start to what can be a magical season! Congrats Cougars!

  • Some of you UTES and Cougars
    Sept. 7, 2009 9:39 a.m.

How many points did Bradford help OU score in the first half which he played in ALL OF SAVE O.7 SECONDS? 10 points, that's it? don't use the Bradford excuse unless you plan on also pointing out the losses of UNGA and Buaman and us down to our one Third String O-Lineman.

With Unga We wouldn't have faltered on those 3rd and one plays. The ONLY TD that OU had was when they had a very short field with which to work. If they had to drive the length OUR D Steped up and stoped them, EVEN WHEN BRADFORD WAS IN. O'Niel hangs on to the balls instead of fumbling into the end zone and we have 21 points to end the game. BYU GREAT JOB! Defense Best you've played in a long time you didn't give up any BIG PLAYS.

Give Stevenson the nod at kicker a missed FG (24 points at the end of the game) and that last kickoff could've lost that game for us reminds me of another Paiyne in Boise.

To excuse making BYU Fans please become turncoats we DON"T NEED YOU!!!!

Although a BYU alum and fan, I have to admit I was greatly leary of this game. OU - the 1st game - and away. Yikes. But they did it! Great win for BYU and MWC ! This not only helps us, but TCU and the Utes too.

Ha! Ha! I must be out of my mind then because I've read all 561 comments on here! :-)

Actually, the comments pretty much go like this:

    1 - BYU rocks!

2 - Good job BYU but get ready to lose in November (Ute fans)

3 - Way to flex your muscles to the BCS! (MWC fans)

4 - BYU would have lost if Bradford was in! (the hard-core stubborn Yewts and OU fans)

5 - the expected pro-BYU replies about how Bradford didn't matter in the first half (BYU vs OU yards, the first half score, etc) so why should he have mattered in the second half

Yeah, that about sums it up.

    FANTASTIC JOB, COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Joe Moe
    Sept. 6, 2009 11:22 p.m.

It's laughable that there are 561 comments here. I haven't read single one, so if I'm just saying what others have said, I apologize:

No one (in their right mind) is going to sit and read over five hundred comments, so no one (in their right mind) is going to see yours. Or mine.

I bet there are THREE types of letters being repeated over and over in different words:

    1) BYU rules!

    2) Just wait until the Utes beat BYU!

    3) This is such a waste of time!

    Thanks for reading.

  • Nice work from a hater:)
    Sept. 6, 2009 10:43 p.m.

Ive taken my share of pot shots but I will say that I am fair. Nice win Cougars, this is certainly a nice win for the state, for the conference and for the NON-BCS schools. As much as I hate/dislike on the Cougars my feelings toward the BCS are much stronger than they are toward the Y, which is actually saying a lot because BYU makes my stomach churn. But let's be honest the BCS is a complete scam and it is a plague on college football until WE get rid of it.

    Awesome win Cougars.

    Sept. 6, 2009 10:36 p.m.

Hey BigUteFan whens the last time the U won a national title and dont give me we should've won it last year weak schedule as always the U always plays easy teams only when urban was there you actually played a tough team BYU was beating OU before bradford went down didnt you open your eyes cause id say bradford 1 TD 96 yards passing hmm did we beat them with him in ya id say so

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you
    Sept. 6, 2009 10:16 p.m.

As much as it pains a Utah Fan to say it, I have too. Absolutely fantastic win BYU. Thank you for finally representing the conference well!!!

I was pulling for you the entire game and now have no voice. We are still going to handle you though in November and thus is life.

    Go Utes!!!

    Sept. 6, 2009 10:05 p.m.

Both BYU and Utah have fine traditions. It's important to remember that the world wasn't created in 1990. There were decades when the Y couldn't beat Utah and the same when Utah couldn't beat BYU. Both schools have many impressive victories against so-called "major" programs. Lavell Edwards remains one of the great coaches of all time and Kyle Whittingham, former Cougar, looks to do the same. Neither school is coming from nowhere. Boise State is making a new tradition like BYU started in the 70s. Remembering great traditions and fighting to live up to them is one of the elements that keeps the "great" programs on top. Great heart has always finally triumphed over simple talent and arrogance. This, of course, perfectly describes the BCS. They have failed to remember and honor what true greatness consists of. Cold, dead money is their master. It will bite them as a matter of natural course. Go BYU, Utah, TCU, Air Force, MCW and the likes of Boise State. Might nor money has ever made right. OU also went down fighting and with class no matter what excuse makers offer them for a false sop.

I hope that OU has a winning season for the rest of it's games. That would make BYU's win that much sweeter, and would add legitimacy to the claim that the MWC should be a BCS conference.

  • Glad but nervous
    Sept. 6, 2009 9:11 p.m.

This was a fantastic win for the Cougs. BUT, this is the FIRST game of the year. We still have a lot of football to be played. I hope the team plays with the same intensity and heart, all through-out the year. They need to cut down on penalties and turnovers if they want to run the table. Good luck in New Orleans!!!!
    GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CSU just beat UC. The MTN just beat another big 12 team.

Maybe it will snow for the WY/TX game (LOL). It is to much to hope WY beats TX?

  • Texas Longhorn Fan
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:19 p.m.

Response to EASY BYU that the win was only because Bradford got hurt. OU had Bradford during the first half and could only put the Sooners in front by 3 points. BYU total yardage was like a hundred more yards but no score to show because of turnovers. With or without Bradford if BYU quits turning over the ball on offense and the defense continues to hold, BYU still could win. I think OU fans need to accept that they got beaten and get ready for their next game. That being said, myself being a Longhorn fan, I loved seeing OU get beat. I bought the DVD of the OU vs BOISE State bowl game and watch it quite often. I think that was the most fun game I've seen in my over 40 years of watching football.

  • re: No end
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:10 p.m.

Its not about not talking favorably about a non-BCS team, its about not talking favorably about a team whose conference doesn't have a contract with ESPN. Thanks again, Craig!

  • No End to the BCS
    Sept. 6, 2009 7:32 p.m.

As much as the BCS is hated, it won't end. The NCAA, ESPN, and the BCS have done enough to make sure that will never happen. Just look at the change in names from Div-I to FBS. There is no intention whatsoever. No matter how big the win or how many times the MWC or WAC bust the BCS, these conferences will still only get the crumbs of the BCS and the bowl system in general. ESPN does nothing to promote the MWC. I think it is in the contract of the announcers that they cannot talk favorably about any conference that is not in the BCS. You cannot even find a link to a non-BCS conference on the ESPN CFB homepage.

I would love to see a playoff, but there is too much money and politics in place to let the small guy in, no matter the obvious inequities of the current system. It's not about respect, it's all about money.

It was still a great win by BYU and great for the MWC.

  • Boise State Fan
    Sept. 6, 2009 7:03 p.m.

Congrats BYU on a nice win - always nice to see a BCS team go down to an underdog.

Don't agree that you should be ranked ahead of BSU with the way that Boise totally shut down Oregon, but a win against the BCS is the only way the BCS can be broken. Congrats BYU & Down with the evil empire!

How nice is it to read so many comments talking about how big this win is for the MWC. Comments can get Jr. high-ish at times from both Utah and BYU fans. Refreshing to see common sense coming out.

I agree, and we all know about the bias of ESPN and most national media. We can't do anything about that exept to continue to win. Go BYU, Utah, TCU, and the MWC in general

Idaho State took that idea from Utah State. Didn't much help the Aggies. Just another demoralizing loss to the team.

  • Jerry from Idaho
    Sept. 6, 2009 6:19 p.m.

Could it be possible that BYU beat Oklahoma because they overlooked BYU in anticipation of their big game next week with the Idaho State Bengals. On a serious note Idaho State is getting smarter. They lose every game they play so why not get paid for their efforts. The made $450,000 at Arizona State this week and will make $500,000 next week as they try to keep Oklahoma from scoring in the triple digets. Good win for BYU they played like champions.

  • Bradford was NOT A FACTOR
    Sept. 6, 2009 5:59 p.m.

Once again, Bradford was not a factor in this game.

It was all tied up at 7-7 just before he got injured...pretty impressive (sic) for the returning Heisman Trophy winner.

I like that Bob Stoops isn't making any excuses for losing...he's a classy coach, and he took this loss with grace.

    Way to go Cougars!!!!

By the way, I will happily wear Utah gear when they play against Oregon and TCU gear when they play against Virginia and Clemson. GO MWC!!!!!

    Sept. 6, 2009 5:47 p.m.

That was an impressive victory by BYU. I am a huge BYU fan but until they play Utah and TCU in Provo, I will be cheering for all three teams and any other MWC team that plays a non conference game. This is the only way the MWC is going to get respect.
I really like the fact that BYU scheduled some really good teams to open their season with. Instead of playing weak teams during the pre-season, BYU,UTAH, and TCU need to schedule games against the top teams in the country. This is the only way that they will gain credibility.
Now, we just need Air Force, New Mexico, or UNLV to step up and have great seasons as well.
Really it is too bad that BSU is not in the MWC. That would really make the MWC look a lot stronger.

Great game Max Hall, Koriya, and the BYU Tight Ends

  • Big Utah Fan
    Sept. 6, 2009 5:46 p.m.

I was cheering for BYU in that game! This is the only way the MWC was going to play for a championship this year with this win by BYU who ever goes undefeated this year they can't deny the MWC to play for the championship. Proud of the cougars great way to stick with what was working. Utah fans show that you have class and give it up to BYU get on here and give them their props they did great.

    Way to go BYU!!!!!!!!!!

I like Bronco turning over the defense to coach Hill. He was awesome. Great calls. Bronco does a wonderful job being there when He needs to inject his judgement on a particular call. Great start to a wonderful season. Good luck at Tulane.......and the rest of the games. We love you Cougs.

I'm not a BYU fan at all (I'm actually a U of Montana fan), but I have to give BYU a 2 thumbs up on this victory. Most of the country doesn't think we know how to play football out here in the Rocky Mountains, and you proved them wrong. Be careful of your euphoria, however. One game doesn't make a whole season!

    Sept. 6, 2009 4:23 p.m.

I'm still in shock over this game. It is too bad that ESPN is not giving BYU no credit for the win becuase all they talk about is the injury of Sam Bradford (I wish full recovery becuase he is an amazing player) but we get the win and you would of thought the defense would of kept them in the game. Defense was looking way good, they are mean hard hitting defense and it was fun to watch them. Offense needs a few kinks out but they still looked good Max Hall used vision besedes on the interception. I have great hopes for BYU this year I just hope this win just gives them modivation.

ok im a huge ute fan but am happy for the cougars for beating ou. a post earlier said alabama was missing a key player but that player wasnt as good as gresham or bradfor cough cough (1st team all american tight end and the freakin heisman trophy winner) i am not taking away your win because you didnt have harvey but you did show great heart and wanted it much more than ou! im going to have to tell my high school teacher about this, he is a huge ou fan and told me no way okie loses to byu but it happened.

  • OU gets a mulligan

    Sept. 6, 2009 4:01 p.m.

Is the best team in the MWC after this game. No question about it. They are now the team to beat. They are the only ones with a legitimate shot at the BCS championship game. Oklahoma will be great the rest of the year and this will only strengthen this year. To compare this win to Utah's win last year against Michigan, shows ignorance and total lack of understaning college football. Typical homer comment. Oklahoma was the favorite to return to the national championship against Florida. Michigan was average before the Utah game last year. No comparison. Let us enjoy the win. It has been 19 long years.

  • Down with the BCS
    Sept. 6, 2009 3:53 p.m.

This win shows how deep the MWC is. I think it is a positive statement to the BCS conferences and other BCS supporters that even the MWC's third best team can beat OU.

  • Reality
Sept. 6, 2009 3:50 p.m.'s the first game of the year. We know nothing about how this OU team will do this year. So this game might not be that huge after all. Remember when Utah beat Michigan at the Big House last year, and then MU was a bust. The Sooners looked awful yesterday. They maybe a 8-4 team (Or worse). Lets see how the season plays out. True, it was a huge win for the Coug's, but lets not get carried away. There is 12 more weeks of football. I am a Ute, and cheered for BYU for the first time since I was a kid (parents brainwashed me to like the Y). It was a great win, but lets keep it in check. TCU is the team to beat in MWC. Utah, is not the best team this year. Letting the Aggies stay in the game, was no impressive. All I'm saying is, we don't really know how good OU is yet. The Utes beating BAMA was much bigger, because they were a PROVEN team, that was one quarter away from the BCS championship.

See you in November at LES.

I am so proud of the MWC right now. I am true Blue, but last year I was totally going for the Utes to down Alabama. Glad to see that most of us from the MWC at least see the common vision. Bust up the BCS nonsense!

  • re: To BYU fans who stayed home
    Sept. 6, 2009 3:33 p.m.

You hit the nail on the head; BYU fans are BYU fans first; SOME of them, maybe, soccer fans 2nd or 3rd or 4th.

If you want to sell out a soccer match, don't even think of scheduling it at Rio Tinto on the same night as BYU is playing one of it's biggest games ever.

EVERYBODY that knows anything about sports in Utah would have known that.

  • I am The BCS
    Sept. 6, 2009 3:25 p.m.

I hate BYU for beating OU. What are we elitists supposed to do now? OU really let us down, like Alabama did last year. If they had stepped up and beat the Cougars like they were supposed to - then end of story. Now we have to keep hearing it. It is going to be a long year. We should never have let these two teams play each other. It is just a mockery of our elite system to give underdogs life. It is just not right.

  • Ute in H-Town
    Sept. 6, 2009 3:17 p.m.

Last night's win was all about BYU's defense. They did a great job of getting all over OU's offensive line and giving them trouble.

I was less impressed by the team’s offense (too many turnovers). The TE play was by far the best aspect of the team’s offense. Max Hall's play was sporadic until the teams 8 min 4th quarter drive.

It is good to see non-BCS schools continue to have success against BCS programs. I'm optimistic for the same result against FSU. This year should be all about making a mockery of the college bowl system.

Byu has more player's at age 25 than any team in the country. No knock on the win, but there is a distinct advantage to an older more mature adult than other teams with teenagers and 20 somethings on the roster. The Cougars are on the radar now, and FSU is looming large....time and talent will tell how they will fare the rest of the season. Big win, regardless against a big 12 team that is at the top of the league historically. Wonder if Wyoming can show up and lock horns with the Texas boys?

BYU beat and beat up OU and it would not hurt you a bit to be classy towards another blast to the system(BCS).

  • 2 picks...
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:58 p.m.

Isn't too darn bad against a fast, elite defense like OU. Max had a great game and I'm happy he can finally shrug off the mistakes from last year.

Now BYU, no let downs, play like this every week!

See you at LES for Florida State.

  • To the Utes and Cougs
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:57 p.m.

Man kudos to all the Ute fans on here I have lots of Ute friends but between this game and the beatdown the Utes put on bama last year this is great I know it's on when our teams play but this is cool to have everyone pulling together for our teams and the conference!

    Sept. 6, 2009 1:56 p.m.

Thanks Cougs for making me very happy last night, for a while I saw the Cougs of old, you know-fumbles, penalties, mistakes, etc. But for some reason, OU looked even worse. As the game went on, BYU's D just stepped it up like no other, I give major props to those guys, they were studs! It took a while but the O finally got in gear and started moving the ball, oh that last drive was a work of art for Hall and his boys! I love it, I am still on cloud 9.

Classy Ute fans- thanks for the props, I felt the same way when you beat Bama last season, someday crazy fans (U and BYU) will realize that winning big games like this is GOOD for the conference as a whole. Come November, it's game on at LES, but until then good luck Utes.

GO COUGARS! (Will Farrel in Old School)

  • RE: Enough with Bradford
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:55 p.m.

Exactly. Any reasonable observer could see that Bradford wasn't moving the Sooners any better than Jones the backup ended up doing.

Bradford's a great player and will come back to have a wonderful career, but the Cougar D had neutralized the whole OU offense long before then. Bradford and Jones were non-factors in this game. Only the idiot trolls who try to get under people's skins want to put an asterisk on this win. (Note to the VERY FEW Ute trolls--most U fans here have had real class--The Tide was missing a key player in the Sugar Bowl, too!)

Bring on the rest of the schedule! The Cougs are ready! GO BYU!

Great effort by the defense. The Cougars played like a team and it showed in the final score. If they play to their level and not to their opponant's level thay could likely go undefeatd this year.

to BYU on a great win. Also, I am very appreciative of the classy comments from the Ute football fans. As an Idaho resident I too am sick of the BCS. I was thrilled to see Utah beat Alabama last year. Maybe eventually respect will follow plus at the very least an automatic bid. I would love to see a college playoff system.

GO Cougars and Utes. BTW - Being from Pocatello I feel sorry for Oaklahoma's next opponent. Our very own Idaho State Bungals.

  • BCS
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:41 p.m.

No way does this victory open any BCS doors.

BCS teams have the TV's, the population, the representation in U.S. House of Reps AND the Senate to kill any anti-BCS legislation.

Look at who was included and excluded using the above criteria and you'll see they included all but the fly-over country they knew they could ignore without consequences (monetary or legal).

The BCS was assembled methodically and was designed to withstand the occasional beatdown from those left out of the system.

Congrats on the win Cougs, but know that this win does no more to bust the BCS than the boxing match in Boise on Thursday night.

  • Bandwagon
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:40 p.m.

I cheer for the Y and U and like to see them both do good and build a national name for themselves. Great win last night. With or without Bradford, the fact is BYU won and deserve credit for it. With that said, it is just funny how many bandwagon fans are jumping on board today. That tells me that most BYU fans are not even fans until they win. True fans cheer for their team in good times and bad. Cheers to the MWC continuing to build their reputation.

Great Defense Cougs. I appreciate all the Ute fans for your gracious comments. I applauded the Utes for taking down Alabama. We should always cheer on each others teams until we meet each November.

I WANT TO KNOW WHO THE UTE FAN WAS THAT PROMISED PAYING BYU COUGAR CLUB $5,000 IF BYU WINS. I realize the guy was joking but he posted several comments last week that he was dead serious about his offer. Where is he now?

  • Enough with Bradford
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:35 p.m.

I'm really sick of hearing that because Bradford was hurt that's the only reason BYU won. So let's get this strait...Bradford basically plays two full quarters and scores once...thanks to a BYU mistake. Other than that BYU was shutting OU down left and right. Bradford went out because BYU had been been getting to him and stuffing the run. Isn't that a huge sign that a team must be good... and if you can't protect your QB you're gonna lose him!!!

    Sept. 6, 2009 1:07 p.m.

Well done Ute fans! I've learned a little about class from reading your comments. Of course, there are a few idiots out there, but the vast majority of the hundred or so comments that I read demonstrated an understanding that we are better off fighting together than we are alone. Your past successes have opened eyes around the country. Your Sugar Bowl victory last year opened doors to recruits for every MWC school including the "Y". I'm going to go buy a "Ute" tie to go along with my collection of cougar blue. Obviously, I'll cheer for the Cougs in November, but until then, your class has won me over to a new understanding.

  • Bradford didn't matter
    Sept. 6, 2009 1:04 p.m.

Clawson nailed Bradford the play or two before and caught him right in the throwing shoulder and knocked him down hard. Then he nailed him from the other direction and flattened him on the ground. THAT IS A HARD HITTING LINEBACKER. And he has no mandatory rule to make him stop hitting hard.. His hits were clean. However I don't think Bradford going out made a difference because the BYU D was working them.

This Ute Fan is impressed and congratulates BYU. Here is hoping we are both undefeated come November game time.

I few days ago some of you Y fans were hoping that you wouldn't lose by too much. I don't know how many of you left messages last night, but you have to believe that your team can win no matter what. OU had everything to lose tonight. The spot light was on them and all the "experts" set them up for failure. OU played horrible, lost their Heisman winning QB, the o-line was wretched, brought in their "freshman" QB, every gift the cougars gave OU, they gave them right back, and you STILL only won by one point barely. They had a chance in the end to win with a field goal. Don't pat yourselves on the back for too long. Have faith your defense can keep you in games this year because your offense stinks."

Ignore the Eyepatch guy. He's just a lonely soul lost in his own personal wave of anger because BYU knocked off a solid OU team on the road.

That and the fact he's late for his shift at McDonald's....

I don't like all the hype in a game where the best players aren't playing throughout the game. Unga should have been healthy, and Sam Bradford was needed to play and run the offense for Oklahoma.

I am no Big fan of the MWC. I do enjoy college football. I don't put stock in a wins unless everyone was healthy and playing in the game. So go pat yourselves on your back for winning a game against a freshman. Props on defense, there are better defenses in college.

A legit win .. Boise State over Oregon. Really though most of us out here in the west want to see upsets .. so again congrats."

Uh, no, BYU's win was no fluke. We played OU toe to toe when Bradford WAS IN....he was hurt literally seconds before the end of the first half, amigo, and it was TIED 7-7.

Your words reveal your attitude as nothing more than a pathetic BYU hater.

    GOOOOO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sept. 6, 2009 12:36 p.m.

Every news site you go to mentions that byu you won because sam bradford got injured. Discounting BYU's win like they did when they played Washington. In no artical does it mention that Unga was injured who is a key player to BYU's offense. Considering the two losses to injuries it made it more of a fair game. If any one should be mad that sam bradford got injured, they should be mad at OU's offensive line. Three players just standing around not blocking anyone.

    Sept. 6, 2009 12:22 p.m.

Great win cougars! This was a huge blow to the evil BCS empire. and will help which ever MWC school is left standing.

If OK rebounds and wins out, any undefeated MWC team should get a shot at the national championship because of the ways the polls work AND the BCS powers will be desperately trying to preserve their system. If they don't, it will be the final blow to the BCS.

BYU players...there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Stay humble, focused and hungry. I loved the controlled emotion for a change instead of the "business like attitude" as in years past.

No one is celebrating Bradfords injury.

They are saying he'll be back in a few weeks, and one of those is a bye.

He took out a large insurance when he decided to stay in college.

    It was a clean hit.

BJ, Max Hall, both have suffered similar type injuries.

But thanks for posting anyway. I was wondering where all the negative human beings were.

  • Sweet Irony
    Sept. 6, 2009 11:58 a.m.

Bradford's expression when OU missed the 54-yard FG was priceless!!! He stared at the big screen in disbelief...I love it!!!

Perhaps the sweetest irony was that Barry Switzer was in attendance. For those of you who don't know the back story, Switzer was the coach of OU back in 1984 when BYU won the national title. It was Switzer who suggested that his OU team was the real national champion because they had played a tougher schedule.

All you non-BCS conferences can give credit to Switzer's comments for starting the precursor to the BCS. Sweet, sweet irony!!! I love that he sat in the stadium last night and watched his Sooners BYU!!!

What is all this if Bradford was still in the game business? His offensive line did not protect him and BYU's defense did their job and put him out of the game. It seems like that is the point of the defense. It is amazing how the Ute fans say good job, but there is always the but... Give BYU the credit we are do, 25 years ago we put the WAC on the map and that is the reason we have great programs at BYU and ugh Utah! Go BYU, beat Utah in November!

    Sept. 6, 2009 10:55 a.m.

Yes! Death to the BCS! Great game.

I was watching it here in Washington State at the student center with a bunch of disappointed Wazzu Cougs (who had just lost to Stanford), a handful of bemused foreign students, one dude that insisted on watching soccer on his laptop, a couple of Oklahoma fans (who left just in time to miss BYU's game-winning drive) and two Ute fans (with U. logo tattoos, no less).

Even the U. fans came around in the end; they had been cheering for Oklahoma to begin with (disparaging BYU and shooting me the occasional dirty look), but when BYU pulled out those great plays at the end, they grudgingly admitted it was a great win. ("Well, we can't take down the BCS all by ourselves," they said. "At least somebody else stepped up...even if it is BYU.")

For what it's worth, I officially predicted a win for BYU. Though I thought the score would be higher, I did think it'd be close.

One more step in what will be a long process, but a process that MUST happen. The BCS must die. Good work BYU. Keep it up.

Please let's all calm down and remember, as we were told throughout the past week, that high school teams in Texas can hang with college teams from Utah. I guess they can hang with Oklahoma too. Remember - they're so superior because they REALLY, REALLY love football, whereas we only Really love football, and the undisputed scientific proof is that they build large arenas for their high school football teams.

So, let's come down to earth and save our jubilation until we can defeat the best high school teams from Texas.

Just throwing this idea out there. the reason bradford got hurt is because of OU's oline on the blitz that got to bradford clawson went untouched. this happened at least three times during the game once before bradford got hurt but on the same drive, when bradford got hurt. (these were both clawson who is a big hitter). and again in the second half by pendleton (though jones landed on his butt and not his side like bradford). The box coaches of OU should have done something. But its a terrible thing that the OU line allowed their quarterback to get hit three times with the same blitz.

There is nothing to get rid of an inferiority complex like some success. With Utah's success last year, it seems many Utes have lost the chip on their shoulders about BYU. UTAH has massive talent! The State of Utah that is. BYU and Utah have a large % of key players from The Beehive State. Utah is a rich state and has jobs, opps and high school football talent. My wife is from Texas where high school football rules supreme! The talent in Utah's Region 4 is perhaps enough to proclaim it America's toughest Region. The MWC is white hot because of TCU, BYU & Utah. BYU and Utah have won 3 of the last 4 MWC titles. They both draw from and win with Utah high school talent. It's only getting better too. Expect the BSC to crack and accept giving the MWC an automatic Bowl bid. What America needs though is a college football playoff(justice/fairness). Meanwhile BYU and Utah will continue to turn even hard good ole boy heads and beat BCS teams with Utah high school talent.

I want to congratulate BYU on the win. Huge win for the program and the conference. I think an automatic bid is close for the MWC. If Utah can blow out Oregon it will help them and BYU and at the same time hurt Boise State's argument for a BCS bowl. I would take an 11-1 BYU or Utah over a 12-0 Boise State team any day. Hopefully the last game of the season will be between 2 top 10 undefeated teams for all the marbles. Let's go MWC!

    Sept. 6, 2009 9:15 a.m.

Here are some thoughts about a promising season.

    1. BYU's defense played as well as I have ever seen them play. However, OU did not spread the offense. We thought BYU had a world beater defense last year when they played well against UCLA. Then they could not handle the spread.

    2. Max Hall is like Brett Farve, he is capable of spectacular drives but he also forces the ball in a lot. That automatically causes interceptions. BYU only wins if the defense can handle the turnovers.

    3. The defense was creative and aggressive. They got pressure on the QBs. They did not play prevent. They appear to have talent and depth in the DBs. Will they play a soft predictable prevent against the spread.

    4. The offense looks about as good as last years. It should get better with a little more experience.

If BYU can handle the spread and fix the mistakes they have a chance at a special season.

Wow, the Cougs got it done! I'll still be rooting for Utah come November, but still, good job.

Here's something to think about: BYU and OU both run the table from here, other national powers suffer various losses, OU goes to the BCS championship game and wins, and OU is named national champion over undefeated BYU who handed OU their one loss! If the BCS could survive that, you can't kill it, it's undead.

I have never cheered for Y, but I found myself cheering for the Boys in Blue yesterday. This was not about BYU vs Utah. This was MWC football against the BCS. Great win BYU. It's not as big as Utah dumping Alabama, but it was probably the next best thing. I was happy for Bronco. One of the best post game interviews I have ever seen. I looks like BYU is for real this year, although I feel that TCU is probably the better of the 3. That team is so fast. Now, for the Coogs, this means nothing if they cough up a game their suppose to loose. I hope we both win out again, but I don't see Utah beating TCU away. I'm not riding the Y band wagon yet, because I don't think OU was worthy of a #3 ranking. Their OU, and they get ranked high every year because of who they are. But BYU should be a top 10 team for sure. But lets be real. It's the first game of the season. Look at Utah, beating Michigan last year. Not as big as we thought.

    Great job BYU

I am happy for the "Y", but to say one of the greatest victories ever? I live in big 12 country and everyone knows they can't play defense. So when OU could not move the ball against BYU it came as no surprise. What was a surprise was the difficulty BYU had moving the ball against OU.

  • To BYU fans who stayed home
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:53 a.m.

and did not come to Rio Tinto. You will reap what you sow: There will not be another FIFA World Cup qualifier in the State of Utah. We were the only city not to sellout its stadium and we were barely a home crowd. The El Salvadorans almost outnumbered the US fans in a US home venue. So again BYU/soccer fans you voted with your feet and you will deserve no more world class soccer. You had a chance to be at an international match and chose to stay home and watch TV. PS Ticket prices were the same in all other US cities.

    Sept. 6, 2009 8:53 a.m.

This was a good win for the Cougar football program but it was not enough to silence the MWC critics nationally. That was not the power-house OU teams from the past. OU is a shadow of what it once was as it lost its entire O-line to the NFL and because Bradford did not play the 2nd half. Enjoy the victory but don't lose sight of the fact that you will not get any respect nationally as long as you play in the lowly MWC

  • Observations
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:49 a.m.

Went to BYU and Utah, cheer for both until they play each other - We usually go to Disneyland during Thanksgiving.

Like the big wins, but BYU tends to let down on the game before/game after. So watch out for Tulane.

Oklahoma has the powerhouse of Idaho State next week - that won't be pretty.

Utah had a great season last year, but TCU and BYU had good seasons. I really think that Utah, TCU, BYU can play with anyone. They may not always win, but they will play competively.

I can't imagine spending $1 billion for anything sports related - that is obscene, especially since the scoreboard gets in the way.

Seriously, great victory BYU. You've made this Ute undergrad (and fan) proud to have gone to grad school at the Y. Enjoy this victory, it was hard fought. Your defense looked really, really good and I'm excited for Jordan Pendleton's career.

Rise and shout and all that stuff. Great win.

  • Michigan isn't even CLOSE to OU
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:41 a.m.

C'mon...comparing this win to an UofU win over Michigan last year? Doesn't even compare. Michigan has been a second rate Big 10 team for awhile...when was the last time they won the conference? They were barely ranked in the top 25 when Utah barely beat them last year. OU was #3 ranked in the nation and coming off of a year that they went the National Championship game AND had a returning Heisman Trophy winner...not even a close comparison!

  • Payne needs to go
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:38 a.m.

Payne has been a weak spot since day one...
Great team effort almost ruined by his inconsistent kicking.
Can't make a 46 yard field goal (this is only from the 36 yard line) and can't keep the ball in bounds on a critical kickoff (equal to a 20 yard penalty)...he is not in high school anymore.

  • Classic !!!
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:37 a.m.

OU exhibited the classic mistake of over looking an opponent. This is a good lesson that the Cougars and all of the football world must take away from this victory. Yes both teams showed all the first game jitters and mistakes that you saw in every college game this past weekend. The national respect talk and the MWC entering the BCS Blah only falling on deaf ears. People money generates respect not wins. When the MWC can draw the MONEY that the BCS conference's do then and only then will the MWC and the likes of the WAC be part of the BCS, and no SOONER.....

    Sept. 6, 2009 8:35 a.m.

Congratulations BYU on a great win. A year or two ago I would have been pulling for OU, but things have changed as we are working together for a bigger objective. In a strange way, BYU's win over OU kind of validates Utah's win over Bama, and Utah's win over Bama validates BYU's win over OU. This continues to prove that BYU, UTAH and TCU can be as good as ANY team in the Nation. Heres to BYU and UTAH being undefeated at the end of November.

  • Re:Cougar Fan
    Sept. 6, 2009 8:34 a.m.

Mitch Payne was solid last year? Um, he only hit 4/8 of his attempts beyond 40. He's NEVER been solid, despite the love he's always gotten from the coaches. Last year Sorenson was better and Stevenson's better this year. No one is criticizing his personality, but his performance, like you're asking us to do. Truth is, he nearly cost us the game, despite his"best" efforts. His best is clearly not good enough and it's time for a personnel change.

A good start, but remember Bradford was injured early. Hate to see that happen and really change the game. Would BYU win is Bradford stayed healthy??? Who knows. But a #3 team should be able to recover and win. Don't expect this to put BYU in the top 10, maybe 16 or 17.

Wow, I'll tell you what I'll have plenty of time to hate you later, but for now excellent amazing spectacular game, maybe the nation will start to see that the MWC is not a conference to overlook. May the BYU Cougars go undefeated into the game on Nov. 28, and if my Utes do the same, the team that comes out alive could be set to make hisyory again, and on that day I will stop cheering for you, because after all, I am a Utah man. Once again great game.

  • Jared - Utah Fan
    Sept. 6, 2009 7:35 a.m.

Real Utah fans do NOT root for BYU to lose every game, just the last game of the regular season. Most Utah fans are from Utah, and want all of the other schools in the State of Utah to play well, and they also have enough vision to recognize that ALL non-conference victories for the MWC is a great thing. Wish I could say the same thing about the many associates and family I have that are BYU fans - I have heard so many of them cheer vocally for Utah's opposing team. Rather than cheer for their beloved Cougars to win, they derive greater joy in cheering for the Utes to lose.

I know not all BYU fans cheer for Utah to always lose, but for those that do, (and unfortunately some Utah fans NEVER cheer for BYU), but I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THAT MENTALITY! THAT WAS AN AWESOME GAME BYU - IMPRESSIVE TO SEE YOUR DEFENSE TAKE CONTROL AND BE ABSOLUTE STUDS AGAINST THE mighty sooners.

  • Big Win
    Sept. 6, 2009 7:34 a.m.

I think we have to hand it Jaime Hill, who coached an amazing football game for the BYU defense. The BYU defense was the determining factor in this game. Bob Stoops was shocked at how well the BYU D played, since they stuffed Bradford in the 1st half, and held the Oklahoma O to just 3 points in the 2nd half.

Awesome job Bronco as well! This one will be remembered for a long time!

  • A while back...
    Sept. 6, 2009 7:28 a.m.

A page back somebody demanded that the cougars be rated above the sooners at something like #10 and the sooners at #12.

Does that person ever watch NCAA football?

2 reasons why BYU won't be higher than #15, and Oklahoma wont be lower than #8.

    1) BYU beat them by only a point. Sure, I'm a cougar fan and I'm SO thrilled that we played well enough to win. But it would take a 30 point win to put us in the top ten from 20. It's just how the polls work.

    2) Look at who the top ten played. With one maybe two exceptions everyone played gimmie teams. In order to get into the top ten, you have to win but teams must lose as well.

My prediction: #16 BYU and #7 Oklahoma.

    Sept. 6, 2009 6:28 a.m.

I have to admit that I was hoping the Cougars could knock Bradford out of the game......BUT.....when it actually happened, I was sad he was hurt and sad for myself for even thinking that in the first place. I hope he is able to come back soon for OU. But remember, Harvey was not able to play either.

Now....the BYU defense played an outstanding game. Only 200 something yards and 13 points for, who would have predicted that? And they only had 10 points at the half......when Bradford *was* in there!

And for the Cougars to go into that environment and not wilt under the pressure......I think Bronco had them prepared very, very well. This should be a springboard to a very successful season........I hope they can simply steeamroll Tulane into the Superdome turf. Rise and Shout!!

    Sept. 6, 2009 4:59 a.m.

As a BYU alum in Iraq I have been excited for months about this game. I was going to try to watch it on my laptop, but I had to go fly a mission (AH-64D driver) here in Iraq instead. I was too nervous to ask anybody about the game when I landed and my fears were realized when I was told by a fellow unit member that BYU got blown out.
How sweet it was when he said just kidding, you guys beat them. I still couldn't trust him until I could look it up and see for real.
Most of my unit is from ACC country and I think they are getting nervous about their automatic bid. GO MWC and most of all GO BYU!!!!!!!!!

Have faith your defense can keep you in games this year because your offense stinks.

  • Fluke .. well kinda
    Sept. 6, 2009 3:46 a.m.

Really though most of us out here in the west want to see upsets .. so again congrats.

  • Meaningless Win...

    Unless BYU wants to:

    1. Establish credibility for BYU and the MWC

    2. Elevate the BYU program to the elite level

    3. Bust the BCS

    4. Put the Cougars in position to challenge for the National Championship

    5. Put more pressure on major college football to abolish the BCS and establish an NCAA-sponsored playoff to determine the National Champions

  • BIG-D
    Sept. 6, 2009 2:48 a.m.

this was not an offensive game at all. this was a great defensive game from both sides. i havent seen any people hate on BYU yet on these comments so i am happy. i know that some people are saying that BYU only won because bradford was out but like i read on some earlier comments, if OU is the third best team in the nation then their defense should have been able to hold BYU to 0 points. BYU stepped up and didnt let up. way to show that BYU can play. and big props to karyia. way to step up at the last second. lets go cougs! keep it up and we will have a very good chance to atleast make it to a BCS game. maybe a national championship. i am not saying that they are going to go to the national championship but if they can breeze by Florida state, TCU and utah then they most likely will because of the high ranking. we will definitly pass boise state too. we have to

    GO MWC

  • say what?
    Sept. 6, 2009 2:24 a.m.

54 yard field goal for a kid that couldn't hit at 47 yards?

Head coaches make millions of dollars... Why?

The old 'center fake the snap,'
'put the ball under your jersey and walk 13 yards'
would have been a smarter play.

And don't get me started about that interference call by BYU in the end zone.

The 74,000th. fan up on row 989 and the injured OU quarterback grinned when they watched that replay.

Many Cougar athletes--not only Mitch Payne!--messed up at some point tonight. They pulled together anyway despite the sloppiness and found a way to beat one of the best teams in the nation. My advice: Enjoy it!

Agreed. Oklahoma needs to have a good 9 or 10-win season for this win to be fully respectable at the end of the year. I wish the best for Sam Bradford--hated to see the guy go down and hope he's back soon. I don't usually cheer for the Sooners, but hey, there's motivation! So Go OU!

  • Great Defense

Who'd have thought? Jaime Hill should get a game ball, as should the whole defense.

I've been a Cougar fan since the Virgil Carter days and belonged to the Knothole Gang - and have seen almost all of BYU's biggest games over the years.

This year's defense is the best I've ever seen at BYU, and the offense has the potential to be at least as good as the 1984 team.

But let's face it - the national media will only give us respect if we win every game and Oklahoma wins all of their remaining games and we're the only undefeated team in the country.

I've lived in Southern California, Florida, Maryland, and Texas. Most people think of BYU the way we think Utahans think of Oral Roberts University - they just think it's a fluke if we win. Yes, it's changing for the better as witnessed by the Top 10 ranking we got last year even though Utah and Boise State were also undefeated at the time, but the reason the BCS can get away with their monopoly is that there are so many more BCS team fans out there; they think BYU still has a lot to prove. I guess we do, too.

I hope no one is bagging on Mitch Payne too bad. Some of the comments here seem to be calling for his head.

Yes, he missed a field goal and yes he shanked an enormously critical kickoff out of bounds which almost cost us the game.

But the guy is human, and people are more important than games.

I try to remember that who we are is completley separate from what we do. Critique performance and not people. BYU coaches will work to figure it out. He was pretty danged solid last year.

Personally, I'd be shocked if he booted any more kickoffs out of bounds this year.

    Hang in there, Mitch!

Well done Cougars. Usually there is one commentator or journalist our there that will go with the upset in a Top 20 showdown like this, but not for this game. Everyone was 100% aligned on how this game would play out. And with good reason:

    1) BYU's painfully shallow offensive line
    3) OU's Heisman Trophy QB
    4) OU's All-American Tight End
    5) OU's NFL sized/speed Defensive Line
    6) No Unga

Man, this was such great win for our Cougars that I don't even want to go to bed tonight. I think I'll just stay up all night and then sleep during Church. But if someone talks about the game during testimony sharing time then of course I'll wake up for that.

Congratulations Cougars. I only got to see tiny snippets of the game (right now the Pennant Race for my Rockies > College football), but I did see the very end.

All I heard on the radio this week was how the difference in talent between BYU and OU is the second and third string, and that's why BYU had basically no chance. Well, a couple of starters go down (I'm not talking about BYU's starters out), and all of a sudden it's as if the Y was successful against a bye on their schedule (if you listen to the ESPN analysts). What happened to all of those great athletes OU had backing up the starters?

Oh, and btw, Sam Bradford wouldn't have been on the field during BYU's 8-minute game winning drive. Are the pundits going to make excuses for OU's defense, too?

To be clear, this isn't a rip on Oklahoma. I've actually been a bit of a Sooners fan the last few years. Barry Switzer was one of the biggest horse's patoots to ever pace a sideline, but Bob Stoops is The Man and has completely changed the way I view that program. I hope they can regroup from this and have some great success this year. Go Sooners! Good luck against UM and especially UT!

  • Way to go Cougars!
    Sept. 6, 2009 12:11 a.m.

I was getting ready to blast the obnoxious Ute fans that have been saying all year that OU was going to pound BYU 56-10 but I am glad to see so many classy Ute fans posting tonight.
I will be smiling when I go back to work on Tueday morning because I posted a score 21-20 for BYU on a prediction board.
Great job by the coaches in getting the team ready to play, especially with all the injuries. Kariya did a good job as well as the entire D, especially on the goal line. Max Hall had a couple of INTs but made the plays when it mattered most.
I hope the rest of the MWC teams continue to do well to either get the MWC in a permanent game position or move to a playoff system. Utah has shown that just going undefeated is not enough for the BCS folks.
This game was very impressive but there are a lot of games to be played. FSU, TCU and Utah will all be tough games for the Cougars. Even teams like Tulane and Air Force can't be overlooked.

Yes, it's nice that Ute fans have the opportunity to get a little taste of the success that BYU fans have been enjoying for most of the past few decades. Keep it up for another ten years or so, and you will probably have a solid program!

The last few decades??? BYU is now 2-20 against ranked teams assuming OU finishes in the top 25 at the end of the year.

If you want to talk trash back it with facts. Otherwise you just look silly. Its ironic that during the game the dominance of BYU football was highlights of the 1984 miracle. BYU has never been ranked in the top 5 under the BCS system. I will let you guess what Utah had done during the same period.

Congrats to BYU for a great win!! I didn't think you had it in you. For now I have to give respect where respect is due and that is to BYUs defense.

Didn't see the game, but was surprised (happily so) to see that BYU had beaten OU. I honestly didn't think it would happen, but it is a great win for the conference and one that BYU fans can be proud of.

As for ESPN's biased reporting; what can you expect? The network is married to the BCS and probably holds a special hatred for the MWC since it has its own TV deal (albeit one that sucks).

Way to go BYU! Way to represent.

I just have to remind the nay-sayers that at the end of the first half, the stats read Bradford 96 yards, Hall 220+ yards. Also, Nevada Ute - the win over Michigan may not have been a lot on your strength of schedule, but it did bump you up in the ratings which helped with the bowl selection. Too early to tell if we can deal with Florida State, TCU and Utah, let alone Tulsa (who had a great game today) and the rest, but if we can, this will help us the same way.

  • Kicker replacement needed...
    Sept. 5, 2009 11:59 p.m.

Way to go BYU, great victory!!!
...get rid of that kicker and there will not be a weak spot on the team. Friends told us the amazing walk-on was snubbed by Tidwell, what a mistake! Payne is awful.

  • Great Defense!
    Sept. 5, 2009 11:59 p.m.

BYU Dominated this game far more than the score showed! Far more offensive yards, just stop the lame turnovers! Oklahoma ONLY scores came from turnovers deep in their own territory! BYU Defense shut down the #1 offense in the Nation Completely and like Nobody thought possible!

With Utah, TCU and Florida State AT HOME, this could be 1 Awesome Season! Even with a respectable loss to 1 of those 3, they could be BCS Busters with a Strength of Schedule well Above Boise State!

  • We're all Cougars tonight

Thankyou Ute fans for chiming in and supporting the big win. You have to appreciate coach Bronco's statement after the game how this was a giant win for the "conference"...not only BYU. Even though we are huge in-state rivals and there's some harsh feelings between the teams, a true college football fan will support a one step closer win to national recognition for our conference. We all win after this game just like when the utes spanked Bama. love it.

And cougar fans, stop with any BCS talk yet. We still have Florida St. and a tough conference schedule.

With all that said 11-0 cougars vs. 11-0 utes in november?? Yes I will have some of that and be there to watch the utes get an invitation to the las vegas bowl.

Did the Sam Bradford injury effect the outcome of this game? Maybe? Maybe not? No one will ever know. People are going to be talking about the injury and pinning the lose on it for some time to come. One thing is for sure injuries are a part of the game, truly great teams find ways to win when people go down with injuries. Great job Cougs! Way to represent the MWC!

    Sept. 5, 2009 11:45 p.m.

I was at the game and can tell you that even with Bradford, the Coug's were in the game from the beginning.

Now I do think that there may have been some different play calling in the 2nd half by Stoops if Bradford was still playing, but as the saying goes "if If and But's were candy and nuts we all would have a Merry Christmas".

You have to play the game, regardless of who is there or not, and the BYU Defense OUTPLAYED the OU offense ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!

Look at the stats, even with Bradford the longest completion for OU was only 18 yards. So no more comments about how the only reason the Coug's won the game was because Bradford was hurt. The trend was set in the 1st half and it contiued in the 2nd. Remember the only reason OU had a touchdown at all was because of a BYU muffed punt.

  • Once again...

the conference will not get any respect until the bottom feeders get their act together. Yes, Utah, BYU and even TCU have won key games against teams from BCS conferences, but the MWC will continue to be looked down upon until UNLV, SDSU, Wyoming, CSU and New Mexico improve their programs.

My brothers are all Boise State fans and if anything this reinforces the message that the BSU win was not a fluke. Call it another message from the west. Boise State vs. OK, Utah vs. 'Bama, BYU vs. OK - the BCS better start paying attention!

After the game we listened as the OU fans complained to Stoops on the post-game radio show about scheduling too hard of a team in BYU and in scheduling a neutral site - give me a break!! They out-numbered us 25-to-1!!!

Tonight I was proud to be a Cougar, and yes I was proud to be from the MWC!!!

Stop comparing this to the Utah win over Alabama because it's not even close. The TCU win over OU is a bigger win for the MWC than this was. You squeaked by against a bad OU team and needed to rely on their red shirt freshman quarterback to win this one. Please stop with the BCS front runner talk until you actually do something with your season. Remember where that got you last season? A win over a team that will be unranked at the end of the year is nothing to get worked up about. Boise State should be the favorite still, they did what they were supposed to do: DOMINATE. Ref: Easy BYU... was 7-7 when Bradford went down in the 1st half...BYU was the one moving the ball most of the first half and it was also BYU who was Beating themselves coughing up the ball. If they hadn't turned over the ball and gave the Okies so many penalty yards it might easily have been BYU 21-0...But that's BYU football...BYU won despite of itself...Bradford wasn't that big of a factor and Jones was moving the ball almost as well as Bradford...which compared to their 2008 season was barely moving. BYU 's Defense was very effective...Your assessment is mute. Oklahoma wasn't as tough as they were made out to be...and BYU is probably a little better than it's preseason #20 ranking indicates....Are they top 10???... that's to be seen....but they are definitely top 15.

  • Olympia Cougar
    Sept. 5, 2009 11:26 p.m.

I was surprised and disappointed that ESPN hardly ever showed the statistics during the game. BYU moved the ball well against the vaunted defense that many said was the best in the nation...returning 11 starters? Also, the loss of Bradford and their Tight End was impactful but so was all the injuries at BYU. There should be no marginalizing this win against a deep and powerful OU team.

You need to celebrate this one with us just like we needed to celebrate the Bama win with you.

During rivalry week it's one, but other than that week need to pull for each other. Only by both of us keeping on our current hot streaks will the MWC get an automatic bid or will the BCS system go up in smoke. Both teams need to be powerhouses for this to happen.

Let's both celebrate this one and good luck with the rest of your season. If we're both undefeated when we meet at the end, things will start to change.

What I'm hating is the ESPN excuse-machine, pinning the loss on the Bradford injury at the end of the first half. While Bradford was in the game, Hall outplayed him in yardage and 3rd down conversions, as well as overcoming turnovers and penalties.

That is really the only thing you can definitely was definitely caused by Bradford being out."

Actually, what about their "powerful" RB's who SHOULD have been able to run it in from 6 lousy yards out? Even a grandma would have been able to hand it off to one of those guys for a score from that range! And what about all of OU's GREAT INVINCIBLE DEPTH?? NO EXCUSES! Congrats to BYU. Im not a BYU or Utah, non a OU fan but thought BYU had no chance because of the soft defence they have had in the past. I was right thinking OU would BYU to 17 points are less. It will be interesting to see how BYU defense does the rest of the year. I think OU shot themselves in the foot with all the false starts and holds which made it hard for OU to get going on offense. I didn't look like the same OU team as last year but non the less a talented team. Murray is a beast why he only got 10 carries is beyond me. Brown looks ok at best.I know BYU doesnt win if bradford doesnt get hurt but either way they proved themselves tonight. Maybe they can keep it up for the year. Congrats BYU

I agree that the Ute/Bama game was the biggest for the MWC. Ratings at the end of the season are much more accurate than at the beginning. Of course if OU wins out, they could still end the season #3. It's nice for ESPN to give props to BYU though since they usually don't.

I have a son who goes to Utah and a daughter who goes to BYU. I cheered the Utes when they beat Alabama and I cheered the Cougars beating Oklahoma. Those games, however are bigger than than the Utes and the Cougars. This has turned the whole BCS upside down. The MWC is the big beneficiary for these wins. We ought to solicit Boise State to join the conference and then we should be a BCS conference. If the big boys who run the BCS can't see that, then let them continue to bask in their stupidity. Can you honestly believe that second rate conferences such as the ACC and the Big East are better the the MWC anymore? This should make everyone in the nation who knows anything about college football finally realize who the power conferences are and that the MWC belongs to that group.

    Rankings.....we started as #20 and OU #3.

Where should we be next week?

I'm thinking right around #10 or so?

One thing is FOR SURE, wherever we're ranked next week, it's gotta be AHEAD of OU....BYU#10 and OU#12?

    Sept. 5, 2009 10:48 p.m.

Tim Griffin: It would be easy to blame Sam Bradford’s shoulder injury. But BYU won this game because it converted key plays and took advantage of critical Oklahoma penalties and mistakes. The Sooners fumbled three times, losing two. And they were flagged 12 times for 94 yards in penalties.

Graham Watson: I point out that BYU was able to stay with OU with Bradford in the game so that no one can use Bradford’s injury as an excuse for BYU’s win

Hey Ute fans, we appreciate the respect you've given us tonight. This was huge!!! It was not quite as well played as the Utes thumping of Alabama last season, I admit, but it was a fantastic win against an elite program...on the road. And definitely a smack in the face to the BCS.

I must say that I cheer for the Utes when they play anyone other than the Cougars. I cheer for all MWC teams. I do hate the Utes in November, but I hope we're both undefeated. Here's to someone outside the BCS given a national title shot!!

although I have only read the first page of comments. Thanks to the classy Utah fans who congratulated BYU. I'm guessing the Utah fans who lack class probably didn't leave comments. Or claimed that we won because Bradford got knocked out, not having seen that the only touchdown scored by Oklahoma WITH Bradford came on a short field after a muffed punt reception.

Sloppy or not, OU was picked to win by more than 3 touchdowns. The high speed offence that was hailed last year just got shut down to 13 points. Something Florida and Texas could barley do. So sloppy, oh yea! Byu could have been up 21-10 at half time but shot theselves in the foot. OU handed them the game in the 3rd quarter but Hall was a little petrified by the 90 foot long video screen! He got it done in the end, and this is awesome. The BYU D shut down one of the most powerful offenses in the country. And that in itself, was awesome! Lets beat up on Tulane next week!

    Sept. 5, 2009 10:35 p.m.

Oh, and by the way, as a Cougar fan of nearly 40 years, I fully agree that Utah's victory over Alabama last January was more impressive than BYU's victory over OU tonight (which was incredibly sloppy). I was cheering and hollering all through the Sugar Bowl, and I truly felt that Utah should have been the national champion last year.

I want to see the MWC continue to embarrass the BSC until something finally changes. I'd love for it to be BYU every year, but if it's not BYU, I'm happy if it's Utah or TCU or even UTEP. I truly believe our conference is just as good as any other (including USC and the Nine Dwarfs), and I want the MWC to just whup all the OOC teams they play.

Games are not won and lost by the starting 22, it takes a team effort. Everyone has to be ready to play. BYU was ready, Oklahoma was not. Doesn't matter what happened to Bradford.

  • Great Win!
    Sept. 5, 2009 10:34 p.m.

YES! I cheer for BYU--and taking each week one at a time, I'm rooting for the Cougs to win all the rest! Let's hope THIS is the BCS year!

Here are a few other teams I'm now rooting for:

    * The Sooners. Come on, OU, win the rest of your games! Or at least all but 1 so you're not playing for the BCS championship anyway. Even with Bradford out (genuinely sorry to see that, BTW), you've got the personnel to take care of business. Besides, BYU and the MWC need the quality win. Go Sooners!

    * Boise State. Great job handing the Ducks their own heads--and don't stumble the rest of the way. Keep giving the BCS powers that be the major headache of TWO deserving undefeated "mid-majors" in the top of the BCS rankings.

    * Utes: I hope you win all your games, too--until Nov. 28. See you then for some payback. :)

Go MWC! Bring down the BCS!

Hopefully now, the MWC will get some respect, but I doubt it if the pollsters and the BCS presidents have anything to say about it. BYU has a good chance to break the BCS for the first time, but they need to win all their games first. 1 down, 11 to go. Congrats BYU!

    3. God didn't want me to go to church tomorrow and trash talk BYU with the fellow saints. I've been humbled again. Miracles do happen, I just didn't expect it Texas tonight.

    Sept. 5, 2009 10:32 p.m.

The delay of game penalty Oklahoma took on 4th and goal may have been the difference. Instead of a chance to punch it in for a touchdown and 10 point lead, they had to take the safe route and kick the field goal, keeping BYU within 6. That is really the only thing you can definitely was definitely caused by Bradford being out. One the other end, BYU also got a delay penalty in pretty much the same position, but it was on 3rd down, not 4th. Much less costly, and they were able to put it in for the TD.

Should we now change it to "Jacobsen is still open?"

Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

We had one field goal taken away when we penalized ourselves. We made the first one, got penalized and missed our second attempt. That cost us 3.

Then, we made TWO mistakes on OU's long drive right before the half, giving them a whopping 30 yards, putting them into field goal position.

    1. Who woulda thought BYU's DEFENSE would hold OU to 13???

    2. Who woulda thought BYU's OFFENSE could drive for 9 minutes?????

    3. Except for choosing to go for a long field goal instead of turning 4th and 14 over to Landry, I'm not cutting OU any excuses for missing their quarterback. They moved the ball better in the 3rd quarter than they did the first half.

    4. Remember that the difference between the OU's of the world and MWC teams is that they have 3rd and 4th string kids that are faster / more talented than our starters... we've been told that again and again.

    5. Utah, thanks for the kudos! This IS what it feels like, you know it and now we know it. Again. Not to start the pressure again, but here's to two undefeated MWC teams playing after Thanksgiving. Lot of games between now and then, and TCU, but this is a great place to start.

Congratulations Cougars on an amazing win. Great job on behalf of the conference. I cheered for you throughout the game. However, this is arguably the second biggest win in MWC history.

The stakes, the build up, the hype, and the pressure were much more intense in Utah's Sugar Bowl. A post-season BCS bowl is a much bigger deal than a season opener. Utah's '09 Sugar Bowl is the biggest win in MWC history, no contest.

Further, Utah beat Alabama much more convincingly and actualy slaughtered a BCS powerhouse.

Towards the end of the first half, even before Bradford went down, I was EXTREMELY impressed with the way that BYU was dominating the stats -- all but the one that counts the most: the score. I was thinking that BYU could pull off an upset, but, even if they didn't, just by holding their own, they were showing that they are a solid football team. the season ended with a great win for the MWC it now started with another great win, Let us keep it up BYU and Utah. It will be hard but if both are 11-0 going into the the riviarly game it may be the game that decides who plays for a National Title.

  • Awesome!!
    Sept. 5, 2009 9:57 p.m.

The Miami win was better (the way Detmer avoided the pass rush was a thing of beauty), but awesome win tonight nonetheless. Who would have thunk the defense would be the reason for the win? That was an incredible goal-line stand.

Hopefully the kinks/jitters/kicking will be fixed before the Tulsa game next week.

Okay, I admit it. I am a BYU fan and I was hoping that the cougs would just keep it close. Major kudos to Jaime Hill and the work he did preparing the coug defense. Kudos to coach Mendenhall for finally letting go and allowing an excellent coach to take on the D Coordinator role.

This was a solid win that could have wound up being a 20 - 10 win for the cougs.

Congrats, great for the MWC. But the truth is if you are watching any of the sports channels, NOBODY is saying...WOW, BYU is somethin', it's all about Bradford going down. So don't expect much respect, besides you didn't play that well. I think Baylor or UNLV could have done the same. But at least you can now say you have done something for the MWC, 2-22 against top opponents, super!

I am willing to bet my right arm that you were one of those that said Utah was going to get rolled by Alabama?

BYU played well enough to win so congradulations to them. Like I said after the Bama game only losers make excuses winners just point to the scoreboard.

Would Bradford have made a difference? Probably. But it wasn't Bradford allowing BYU to score the winning TD in the 4th and missing a field goal. Just like Utah against TCU last year.

    Sept. 5, 2009 9:53 p.m.

    Holy freaking cow!!

Ok, I went to the Miami game. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure a week or two later we lost to UTEP!

Stay focused!! Not let down! Tulane can be tricky and not a team to ignore, nor Florida State. Actually, none of them!

What a hoot! If all goes well Utah, TCU and BYU only have loses to each other, and one of them (this year BYU) goes BCS busting. The MWC is really moving up the food chain. They need to dump the ACC and replace it with the MWC. Seriously!

Congrats to BYU. I was rooting for a respectable game, had no idea you could pull this off! I wanted you to but....BIG TIME shock! I think the most shocking was the defense against Sam Bradford. I know he was hurt and didn't play the second half but he did play the first half and only managed 10 points!

    Shocking, just shocking!

    Go BYU!
    Go MWC!

Way to represent, BYU. Exceptional game, and huge props to Maxie, who toughed it out and put together a drive when it mattered.

And that defensive stand at the end? Just stunning.

Way to go. See you in November!

    Sept. 5, 2009 9:52 p.m.

    1. 6 play goal line stand won the game for BYU.

    2. The defense played solid...especially fundamentals. Hardly any missed tackles and several open-field one-on-one tackles against great athletes.

    3. Hall actually truly spread the ball around 3-4 catches for 5 receivers. Didn't see that last year.

    4. OU cornerbacks must have been great...never really even challenged them and there were several coverage sacks on Hall.

    5. Great win! Everyone in the country watching footbal tonight would have been watching this game.

    6. Bronco was very classy and didn't seem surprised at all. Whoever called the D-plays tonight was awesome. Props to coaches and players for working hard in the paid off...thank you.

Isn't going into Sooner land and beating #3 bigger than beating #1 at home, as we did with Miami in 1990? Granted, Miami was defending champs, and that loss kept them from winning three national championships in a row...but still, teams just don't go into Sooner land and come away with a win very often.

  • Biggest Win in MWC History!
    Sept. 5, 2009 9:52 p.m.

    From Tim Griffin at

"What it means: The Sooners’ national title hopes have been dealt a staggering blow. They aren’t dead, but they are on life support. And with Bradford’s status uncertain, their hopes for a fourth-straight Big 12 title look pretty slim now, too. It also provides the Mountain West Conference with a strong national calling card victory that arguably might be the biggest in the conference’s history."

    Sept. 5, 2009 9:50 p.m.

First of all, I wanna say congrats to the Cougs for an amazing win. Huge Ute fan here, but anything that helps the MWC, I'm all for... But did I read that correctly? Did you actually just compare Alabama losing an O lineman to Oklahoma losing their heisman QB and All-American TE? I laughed pretty hard at that. Injuries are part of the game, so nobody's putting asterisks next to anything. Utah earned the win in the Sugar Bowl and BYU earned their win in Texas tonight. I know some not-so-classy Ute fan posted a stupid comment, but did you really have to try and stoop down to that level? For the most part everybody's been very gracious on here and that's great... We need to see more of that. I get tired of reading the cheap shots after every game from both sides. Anyway, let's keep up the support on both sides. These wins against BCS teams are good for everyone. Congrats again Cougs! Can't wait til we meet in November.

    Go Utes!!

Thanks for the comments Ute fans. They are very classy. Go Mtn West and Boise St.

    Re: John

Don't make all of us Y fans look dumb because of you. You just got done arguing how people shouldn't be talking about what would have happened if Bradford has stayed in and then you talk about what would have happened if Collie had stayed. BYU also plays Utah State later, too.

Thanks to the classy fans on here, especially Ute fans! How about you come out later in the season and keep this sportsmanship and shut up your classless fellow fans when they start to trash.

    Again, thanks for being classy!

  • Let the Yewt whining begin!....
    Sept. 5, 2009 9:47 p.m.

    "Bradford got hurt!"

"Their star tight end was hurt and didn't play!"

"Their second team quarterback had a hangnail!"

    To this I will say:

When Bradford WAS IN we played them toe to toe, 7 to 7, until OU kicked a field goal that TWO Cougar mistakes GAVE THEM 30 yds on that field goal drive right before the half.

BYU's Unga didn't play a single down due to an injury.

Bauman (sp?)...our hurt early in the first quarter.

Our DBs have been banged up virtually the entire fall practice. (And, oh, BTW, they're almost exclusively a bunch of slow white guys, so we've been told.....)

So like I said Yewts, let the whining begin. I'm gonna ride this victory the WHOOOOOOOOOLE season, right up until we destroy you in Provo.

The Utah spanking then #5 Alabama and BYU's beating of #3 Oklahoma tonight is further proof that the elite teams of the MWC (Utah, TCU, BYU) are the elite teams in the NCAA. I don't want to read one more comment on here from someone saying it was a fluke or that the MWC doesn't belong in a BCS bowl game because it's garbage.

How many local teams have to win big games before we realize that the MWC can play with the big boys? This was hard tough nose football. Let's be real.BYU had shut OU down before Bradford went down. BYU had no starting rb and had been riddled with injuries and still won. This was not more of a fluke than the Utes win over Alabama last year. Go Cougars! Go Utes! Go MWC!

    >The only reason you win this game is because Bradford goes down in the first half.

So...what happened to all that scoring OU was supposed to do in the first half?

The undeniable fact is that BYU, even without any experience on the offensive line, and without their star running back, and without their defensive captain, went into what was basically OU's home field and outhit, outmuscled, and outplayed the Sooners. If there's an asterisk, it should be that BYU won even under those extremely negative conditions.

it is weird that some people doubt that BYU had a chance to win the game. I'm Utes fan and I know that BYU has a good chance to win the game.

Any of TCU, BYU or UTES has a chance to win any game against any team of the biggest 20.

I still hate Max Hall, he is the one thing I hate so much about the cougars, he is equal to Kobe Bryant to me :)

    Sept. 5, 2009 9:43 p.m.

I was telling all my BYU co-workers that I thought the Y would pull it off this week. Looks like I was right. BYU's defense looked great. Offense played a lot better than expected. I don't think that I've ever seen so many flags thrown in one game. The injury that Bradford suffered looked exactly like the one BJ had in the opener against Oregon State in 07. Very tough break for them.

But congrats on the HUGE win. I was definitely pulling for you guys. I hate the BCS system, and this was another kick in the teeth for them directly from the good old MWC. The Y will definitely be a tough team to beat this year. Awesome job! Go UTES and Go Cougars!! See you guys in November...

Yeah right, a win over an "overrated" Oregon team is not the same as a win over #3 Oklahoma. Also, how many Top 25 teams remain on BSU's schedule? Have fun playing small potato teams like U. of Idaho.

If BYU keeps winning, there will be no BCS bid for you. Anyway, Utah and TCU still have great chances of edging ahead of you in the polls given your wimpy schedule.

Now go away with your negativity so we can keep celebrating in Utah and savor this rare moment of Utah and BYU fans coming together.

  • Congrats

As a Ute alum I have to admit BYU surprised me today. Congrats on a great win with or without Bradford, the BCS teams need to ROLL MWC teams if they refuse to give us a automatic bid.

P.S. I don't want to hear another word form BYU fans about how Utah was lucky against TCU missed field goals and Bama wasn't motivated and missing a OL.

It's great to read all the positive comments from ute fans and cougar fans. This is great for the conference. I am cheering for Utah to take care of business at San Jose and then Oregon. BYU, you need to take care of business at Tulane and Florida State at home. If we both are 3-0 going into week 4 the MWC should have a couple of teams in the top 10 and the BCS will be running scared worrying the rest of the year having not just one team crashing the party, but 2. This was a fantastic win! Hall erased the TCU, Utah, and Arizona games with that 9-10 last drive. Great calls by Anae. Pitta played like an NFL TE and Pendleton will be an all-conference LB for 3 years. The new dbs have some real talent. The o-line played like veterans. I can't wait to get Unga back. Sept. 5, 2009 9:29 p.m.

Bradford only put up 10 points before getting hurt, and seven came from a BYU turnover, so those who taunt that BYU only won because he got hurt, need to shut up, and learn how football games are played. He wasn't exactly lighting up the BYU defense when he was healthy and playing. Actually, he spent a lot of time picking himself up off the ground. Excellent defensive schemes and execution.

Oklahoma should be thanking the gods that Collie chose to leave for the NFL, or this one would have been a blowout, with or without mr heisman trophy.

Good win, solid defense, and if they can eliminate the turnovers, there is no one on the schedule that can beat them.

OU only scored 13, not 14

No one gave BYU a chance. Everyone is focusing on Bradford being out of the game. By the way, good, hard-nose hits from BYU knocked him out of the game. No one wanted Bradford to go down, and Clawson's hits were not dirty, but you have to give the defense credit! Bradford was not lighting the defense up before he got knocked out. Don't say that it would have been different, because no one knows that, and I don't believe it would have been much different.

I heard Lou Holtz say on ESPN, OU wasn't the only team playing without their best players because of injuries. BYU was missing two of their best linemen, and Harvey Unga. They did it without them, and BYU was supposed to be the team that didn't have any depth. Guess what? BYU stepped up, OU didn't. . . end of story.

I don't want to hear anything about lucky. That is what losers always cry! BYU made their luck! Go Cougars!

I'll be looking for what you have to say if you return to these blogs without a Cougar Club confirmation number.
    Go Cougars!

There were some real surprises in this game.

    1. BYU has a defense. They played smart, hard and with intensity. They never let up. They also have talent. I think the Defense won this game. This is the hardest I have ever seen BYU hit in years.

    2. The coaches appear much more mature. They had a very well thought out game plan and the players executed it fairly well.

    3. The patched together O line is very good, both on the run and in pass protection.

    4. BYU played with poise on the road, in a big game.

    5. The young running backs are pretty good.

This is just the first win of a long season. There are a lot of hard games ahead including next week on the road at Tulane.

This game is an important giant step forward for both BYU and the conference. Thanks for playing so well and hard.

I don't know what this will do to the rankings next week, but it goes to show that preseason rankings have no meaning. OU was not #3, and BYU was not #20. There shouldn't be any polls until October.

Way to go BYU, and another feather in the cap of the MWC!!

Boise State Fan: You know, I was having a lot of fun watching the BYU game and enjoyed doing it a BYU friend. And I was really enjoying the fact that Utah and BYU fans were not taking cheap shots at each other for a change. But then we had to have some jerk from Boise State giving us the typical inferiority complex idiot comment. We were cheering for your win against Oregon, now show some class and give BYU their day in the sun for a great game.

Great game BYU you did a great joy representing the state and the MWC. Very impressive. Now take out Florida State.

Cougars..... respect. thats really all i can say, way to earn yourselves and the conference some well deserved attention for the quality of football that is being played in the beehive state and the mountain west.
    NICE W!
Although it is so much fun to revel in the suffering of your rival from time to time, think of what is possible when together we go out and punch these egotistical football programs, media outlets, and doubters from around the country in the mouth with GREAT football. Enjoy this win tonight!!
Bronco... way to be a class act tonight, i think every ute fan should recognize his remarks were for the conference as much as his own program after the game.

The only reason you win this game is because Bradford goes down in the first half. You won the game but as bad as Oklahoma looked, they still had a shot late in the game.

Enjoy the win but if I am a Utah or TCU fan, I am licking my chops.

Hall still gets rattled with pressure which leads to horrible decisions and interceptions.

I live in Big 12 country, and man am I glad BYU won. I'm a die hard Ute fan and always will be. BYU did what they had to. What else does this conference have to do to get respect? Wyoming beat Tennessee (granted it was a bad Tennessee team), Utah beat Alabama, BYU beat Oklahoma, the whole MWC beat up the Pac 10 last year. How can they still keep the MWC out of the NC game? I hope BYU can beat FSU when they play, and if TCU can win on their East Coast swing and Utah beat Oregon, how can the BCS say this conference isn't for real?

    Sept. 5, 2009 9:15 p.m.

I am really happy for this win!

I have to salute the Ute fans - most by far have been very gracious. Even my Ute season ticket holder neighbor was excited for the BYU win.

Between how well TCU played Oklahoma last year, how the Utes pounded Alabama in their second BCS bowl game, and this win, we are gaining ground as a conference.

Let's show the world the MWC deserves an automatic BCS berth EVERY year!

Today is a stellar day for the conference. As a long time BYU fan its about time we held up our end of the bargain. Utah has brought credibility the past few years with some great wins. And by the way, as a BYU fan I did have a sugar bowl party last year with my other BYU friends and we all cheered for Utah. Once we play Utah later it will all get partison as it should and I will bleed Blue.
But during the non-conference schedule its about the conference.

This was a huge game. I was hoping to stay close, but not expecting a win. Fantastic. Defense was outstanding and offense did just enough to win. I hope to see some improvement on offense, especially with a senior QB.

    Sept. 5, 2009 9:09 p.m.

First of all, thanks to the Ute fans who (mostly) have shown real class in your comments.

Despite the fact that BYU gave OU their ONLY touchdown on the Jacobson muffed punt, Bradford played virtually all of the first half. For a team that averaged 51 points per game last year, the halftime score was more a reflection of BYU's defense than anything else.

There will be many talking heads and bloggers who will say that BYU won because Bradford was hurt, but let's not forget that OU only "earned" three points in the first half with Bradford in all the way - which is exactly the same number of points they scored with their back-up in the second half.

BYU now needs to focus on Tulane and FSU. Win those two and the season should indeed be outstanding.

  • We won!
    Sept. 5, 2009 9:09 p.m.

with hard work, great play and a little luck! No matter what the Anonymous Ute fans say, a WIN for BYU against the #3 team in the nation is a shocker! Who cares about the point margin because at the end of the day....

Please don't get on the boards and post all of your sour attempts to minimize BYU's huge accomplishment.

This wint really does help the entire MWC and gives credibility to all of the midmajor conference's efforts to expose the BCS and fight our way into the club that we have been excluded from for too long because we as a group haven't been thought of as good enough to play with the major conferences.

We are good enough. The Utes destroyed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and BYU beat Oklahoma in our season opener. That is two wins for the MWC over top ten programs from arguably the two toughest conferences in football in a row! How does putting down BYU at this moment do anything but expose you as nothing more than a Y hater? You don't even like the Utes, you just hate BYU!

Great win for BYU. Have to admit I gave BYU a .000001% chance of victory (and I'm a Cougar fan and alum). I figured the score would be something like 60-21.

Kudos to the team. You could tell they were tight and nervous by all the TO's. Uncharacteristically, so was Oklahoma. Must have been the awe from playing in that fancy new stadium. What a way to christen it!

Here's to hoping BYU can focus on the next task at hand and not think about BCS glory like BSU fans are talking about already. It makes the matchups against TCU and Utah that much more compelling when everyone is ranked. Thank you, BYU, for finally pulling your weight when facing ranked non-conference opponents. Sept. 5, 2009 9:04 p.m.

If you would have told me before the game that the Cougs would be without the services of Harvey Unga, Max hall would throw 2 int's, (4 turnovers in all), and they would have only had 27 yards rushing for the game, I would have said the 22 points BYU was scheduled to lose by would have only been a percentage of the actual points they would have been crushed by. And yet they persevered, their defense played like a group possessed, and Max Hall finally found his rhythm as the impossible happened, perhaps even more impressive than the Miami game (was in OU's back yard). Shove that into your BCS pipe and smoke it!!

Yes, right next to the place where it says that BYU beat Oklahoma without BYU's star running back playing at all, and without their defensive captain for most of the game, and with 2nd and 3rd sting offensive linemen. And that even with OU's Heisman Trophy winner in the game, OU couldn't do anything against BYU's defense.

Boy was that spot on. BYU's harrassment of the OU QB's, the way the stopped the run, the impressive goal line stand and the critical stop at the end of the game showed that was perhaps the difference in this one.

I hate you with a passion, but I couldn't be more pleased with your victory. Almost threw my remote through my window on one of Max's interceptions . . . something I ordinarily would laugh at! You've finally owned up to some credibility in our conference. Now it's time for TCU, UNLV, Air Force, Colorado State, and of course, the MIGHTY UTES to continue the streak. Let's get those criminals any way we can . . . by winning all the big game!

    Go Utes!

    Go MWC!

From a Ute fan, I have to say... Way to go!!!!

BYU just put themselves into the drivers seat to be this years BCS buster, and hopefully further ram the injustice of the BCS system down the major conferences throats. Cougars deserve a top 10 ranking by tomorrow, and it should just go upward from there.

I'll gladly swallow a loss to the Y if it means that BYU has a stab at a national championship. And if they can go undefeated, taking down Oklahoma, Florida St., Utah, Air Force, and TCU, they ought to get a shot.

Granted, that's a challenge, but BYU proved they can handle a challenge. Congratulations!

Great job BYU - defense was tough! The new O-Line did a great job giving Max time against the hyped-up Sooner defensive line. With the Cougs, Utes and Horned Frogs showing they deserve to be ranked, we make the BCS mafia have to take notice - go MWC!

Well done, Cougars...well done. Feels great, doesn't it. Now you understand how we felt after the Sugar Bowl last year and why we talk about it.

the possible irony is even greater. Boise State and BYU have both won their most difficult games. Now some big ifs:
IF they both run the table, and
IF voters and computers allow it,
you could have two non-BCS teams playing for the national championship.

    Sept. 5, 2009 8:47 p.m.

Max Hall of last year tries to squeeze that ball through 4 defenders to Pitta, Max Hall of this year waits a second longer and finds the open man. Oklahomas defense full of "All-Americans" gives up 356 yards to BYU while BYU's defense full of "slow white mormons" gives up 256, I love it, even with Bradford in for the 2nd half the results would have been the same.

I have been rooting for BYU also...

But, I did think it was funny to see Max Hall telling everyone that they are gonna win while running into the locker room at halftime...then he comes out and forces throws that get picked off...

However, I don't think OU will be able to do much on offense...If BYU can keep them out of good field position, then it could be one play to win the game...

As I am typing this, BYU stopped them down at the goal line on like 7 plays (3rd and goal they were called for a pass interference that was a pretty bad call actually)...then stopped them 3 more times to force a field goal...OU is pretty predictable without Sam Bradford...but its still a one score game at 13-7...BYU could do this...

BYU down 10-7, Sam Bradford injured. It's not fun to see an injury affect the game but BYU is looking pretty good overall. A field goal early in the game was taken away by a penalty and then a miss. A fumble by BYU on the 1 yard line but then a fumble by OU later led to BYU's score.
