I will believe the hype and the talent when I see it on a COLLEGE football
field. How do they perform when other good players from around the
nation/MWC are defending or running over them.We shall see.
Ga. Tech plays in the ACC. UGa. plays in the SEC. Still, that was an
I'll give you credit for your 2 BCS wins, but your "8-0" Bowl record is a
joke. Not as much of a joke as Quest for Perfection ending with a
thump by a 10-2 BYU team losing to Pac-10 7-5 UofA. I'll take 6-5
Utah team's win over 7-4 SEC Georgia Teach team any day compared to 10-2 teams
utes lucky in 08 | 5:15 p.m. June 8, 2009Funny how Georgia in 2007
Sugar Bowl smacked Hawaii all across the field yet no one CRIED about lack of
motivation in playing Hawaii. Bama could have declined the SB invitation and
let a team like Texas Tech play instead of getting embarrassed by the Utes.If Utah has been so great | 9:42 a.m. June 9, 2009 Yes
those years Utah stunk yet we were 1-2 against BYU and we all know how BYU
dominated in those two wins. Those years Utah was in transition and in 2008 it
all payed off. BYU again beat-up a weak conference (aka 84).
Correct me if I am wrong but in 2008 there were 3 ranked teams with 2 in the top
10 from the MWC compared to 0 (besides BYU) and 0 in the top 10 when BYU was
winning conference championships.
DAVE from Midvale again | 2:12 p.m. June 8, 2009What makes you think
BYU's defense that allowed 6 teams to score at will on it will go undefeated
this year. Please go ahead and start making "Quest for Perfection II"
T-shirts so that we the Utes can have something else to laugh at end of this
year besides the annual beat down at the Vegas Bowl by a weak Pac-10 team.
BYU/ut | 5:18 p.m. June 7, 2009"Their are 200 + comments about BYU
football and there are about 20 on a related ewe article...Comments by ewe fans
on Y articles only reinforce who program is dominate in the state!"WOW!!! BYU football is a better program in this era because it generates more
comments on Deseret News articles. Hear the rest of us thought it was about
winning games and for non-BCS teams to at least break into to the big games. The reason BYU generates so much comments is that it makes obnoxious
Quest for Perfection predictions when in reality they haven't beaten ONE ranked
team (TCU) in 10 years. Heaps is talking about a National Championship as
though these 3 players what is missing from a title when in fact it was TCU,
Utah, and UofA put a smack down on the helpless Cougar D. In fact so did UNLV,
CSU, and Washington. Talk about titles when in your good years your not playing
in the Vegas bowl.
"Who gets shut out by UNLV?! BYU has never gotten shut out by UNLV!"Yep, UNLV shut us out 2 yrs ago. It was our 2nd loss to them since 1979. But
did you know...(1) the tdS has been beaten by the Rebels twice this
decade alone, and have lost more football games to them in their history than
Utah?(2) the tdS has NEVER shut out the Utes? If memory serves me,
the Utes have shut out the tdS 15 times!(3) the tdS has only ONE
undefeated season in their history? And that it came against the 4th easiest
schedule in Div. 1-A that year? The Utes have gone undefeated SEVEN times in
OUR history. You REALLY want to know what happened to us with our
losses to UNLV, New Mexico, and Wyoming? We lost, regrouped, learned from our
mistakes, and went undefeated in 2008. What happened to the tdS with their
back-to-back 11-2 seasons? 2008 was supposed to be THE year. And you flopped!
No BCS for you. You couldn't even beat the 5th place
last-PAC10-team-to-qualify-for-a-bowl-game team.Ha ha ha!GO UTES!!!
Over the past 5 years, 2 of the 5 have been great, the other 3?? Losses to
Wyoming, UNLV, New Mexico, etc. Who gets shut out by UNLV?! BYU
has never gotten shut out by UNLV! Also, remember the trip to Laramie in 2006
utes?! What happened there?! And what happened at home against Air Force in
2007?Yewts have not proven a dynasty yet. Don't even start. Go Cougs!
Lucky to have Byu, TCu and Oregon state all at home.I hope the Utes can
have winning record in 09, and no I'm not a Cougar fan, I am Crimson Tide fan.
You beat us, but the game ranked 100 on our most important game of school
I have rarely rarely read a Utah article in my life, why would I when I'm a BYU
fan, guess they wish they got coverage?....
of utah fans
Never say never. And don't call us "tdS." tds was a stupid phrase coined by
Urban Meyer who has no respect for anyone not even the Utes. Utah was a
"stepping stone" to his career at Florida. Ideally he wants to coach at Notre
Dame. The once classy Kyle Whittingham smug personality is so saturated in Urban
Meyer's arrogance it is not even funny, as are many of the fans and players.
It's like having to listen to a bunch of oscar meyer weiners. Meyer left his
stench on Utah bad, and it shows. Ron McBride was a classy coach in contrast to
Meyer, and he had a bit of a mouth himself. If Utah's fans, players,
and coaches were like Elder Wirthlin was, it would be far easier to respect
Utah, but they are completely opposite.
If I pick the winning lottery numbers, I'll be a millionaire. What is
all this "if" going on about the tdS going undefeated vs. opponents like
Oklahoma, Florida St, Utah, and TCU? It's not gonna happen. The tdS will NOT
go undefeated, nor play in the NC next season. They'll go bowling, but not in
the BCS. The schedule is DEFINITELY BCS worthy, but the team and coaching staff
are not.But I think you'll be able to take Tulane.Of
course I said that about Arizona too. What an embarrassment!Go
After all is said and done. . . and a lot has been said here. . . One: This young man goes to high school with my youngest daughter. She is a
very good judge of character. She said he is the real thing and a top notch
leader. He's isn't a pushy leader either; he walks in and everyone just looks
up to him. I guess it's charisma.Second: BYU winning a national
championship. . . several have said here it can't happen. Let me tell you
right now, that if BYU goes undefeated this year, with Oklahoma, Florida State,
Utah, TCU, (and at Tulane) then they WILL be considered for the national
championship. Utah had a pretty good schedule last year; but nothing like what
BYU will face this year.
"Any doubt whether BYU or Washington deserved the 1984 National Title was
answered with a convincing BYU 38-3 win. Case closed!"Poor, sad,
illogical, stat cherry-picking zoob. Everyone knows that with graduation and
injuries, teams can vary from year to year. That 11-1 Orange Bowl Champion '84
Husky squad was a different team than the 7-5 '85 Husky team, who suffered home
losses to 3-8 Oregon St. and 4-7 Washington St. Seriously Ms.
Bobkins, how did beating a mediocre Washington team validate 1984? Was your '84
championship trophy subsequently INVALIDATED by providing '85 UTEP it's ONLY WIN
OF THE SEASON? If teams were as good the following year as they were the
previous year, why didn't the tdS go undefeated in '85? Bosco was a Senior.
Shouldn't they have been better than they were in '84? Could it be that the '84
team didn't face any teams with 9 wins? You BARELY handled a 6-5 Big 10 team.
When faced with 9-win UCLA or Ohio St, you folded like a lawn chair. How would
have fared vs. an 11-1 '84 Washington team? You would've LOST!
"Back in '84".....Zoobies say the same
One of the funnest and most important days in the history of BYU football. The
future looks bright.
With Heaps as QB at BYU, perhaps they should schedule a scrimage against the
super bowl champs, whoever they are. You know, just as a warmup game for the
Fiesta Bowl or something! lol
Realistically, it's a matter of how many national championships Heaps will win
at BYU.Trust me, Heaps will not merely bust the BCS, he will blow it
off the map. BYU is already among the premier programs in the
nation and with Jake Heaps on board we will be nationally recognized as THE
PREMIER college football program. The BCS is petrified at the
realization that three or four of the next five national championships belong to
the BYU Cougars.
Why the press conference and all the showmanship? Make your announcement and
then win a few meaningful games. Then you can have your spot in the sunlight
with the press. I am happy for the kid but think this was a stupid move
I hear the 2010 through 2013 Heisman trophies have already been inscribed with
Their are 200 + comments about BYU football and there are about 20 on a related

I love how Utah makes fun of the Vegas Bowl when most years Utah goes to the
Humanitarian or Armed Forces Bowls.I'll give you credit for your 2
BCS wins, but your "8-0" Bowl record is a joke.
I like these 3 new recruits because they have the right attitude. Each walks
with a swaggar! I am confident they will try their best to back up their words
with results! Also, their optimism is contagous! Other great tallent may be
looking for a school to play and will join the Cougar band waqgon! Regarding
the BCS championship it is not a fair system for all schools. It was designed
by the "big name" schools so they can dominate. Everyone knows that Utah should
have ended #1 last season, yethey were denyed by the BCS good old boys club. I
am all for better BYU and Utah sports teams. It makes for a better season, it's
better for both schools and the Mountain West Conference. Besides, I have heard
that ifthere is to be a national college footabll play off, the Pac 10 will need
to expand to the Pac 12 like the other "big" leagues. Wouldn't it seem natural
for BYU and Utah to join their "old" brotheren Arizona and Arizona State in the
new Pac 12? If that were food for thought,I would call that a "Christmas"
feast!!! Gooooo Cougars!!!
Lead you all the way to the Vegas Bowl.
Offense may sell tickets to the ignorant fan, but defense wins championships.
BYU = Ignorant BlissUtah = Reality
Always dreams of making it BIG! No wonder there are so many MLM's down in happy
valley.Utah Football just produces results. We've seen
this movie before. Hype him up with unrealistic expectations. Print T-Shirts,
and come up with slogans. When the dust settles it's the same old thing. You
guys will turn on him in a new york minute. Just like you did Max and Bronco at
the end of last season. Will be fun to watch, again
Will have another BCS victory under their belts before this kid even laces them
up.Mark this post.
Defending the defense | 8:11 p.m. June 6, 2009The BYU defense has taken a
lot of heat for being subpar. All the haters love to define BYU D based on 2008,
as if the great defenses from 2007 and 2006 never existed.---------------While those D was leading BYU to its annual Vegas Bowl
Utah defences were leading them to BCS wins. The fact remains BYU's
slow defense won't be able to compete with the athletic Utah and TCU defenses.
The last team to be the only undefeated team in the nation BUT beat NO ranked
teams was BYU the '84 champs. The last team to be the only undefeated
team in the nation by beating 4 ranked teams, 2 of which were in the top 10 and
still not get a shot at the title game was Utah in 2008.
Utah fans... | 11:47 p.m. June 4, 2009 are jealous and it is showing. See
you again in 4 years as that seems to be how often Utah is any good.----------------Over the last five years...Utah: 2 BCS Wins
with 2 top-five rankingsBYU: 2 Vegas Bowl Wins NO top-five rankingsYES I am SOOOO jealous of BYU.
What Utah has done in the past five years solidly surpasses what BYU has done.
Talk is cheap. When the Utes have a national championship you can criticize
BYU's. BYU brought credibility to the WAC and now the MWC. Without BYU, Utah
doesn't achieve what it did, although it was only second place.
get it straight Ben Olsen did not go undefeated against the U. Utah 44-UCLA 6 in
2007 with Ben as the QB. And he played horrible that game.
Judging from some of the comments that have been made concerning this recruiting
coup, I think that school up north should change their colors to green
The BYU defense has taken a lot of heat for being subpar. All the haters love to
define BYU D based on 2008, as if the great defenses from 2007 and 2006 never
existed. The defense has recruited well and even the current defense will be
decent. 10 out of 11 spots will be better this year; the only dropoff I see at
all will be losing David Nixon at Weakside Linebacker. Let me enlighten you.Safety- This year we have Scott Johnson there who was our best DB at
corner, a harder position. JC All American Andrew Rich has the other spot.Corner- Brandon Bradley will start and he has better speed at boundary
corner than we've had since '06. Lee Aguirre or Brian Logan are excellent JC
candidates for the other spot.MLB- Matt Bauman was the leading
tackler last year. Shawn Doman has made great plays. Terrance Hooks is back,
better than Bauman.OLB- Jordan Pendleton is new but has size and
great speed as a converted safety for the position. Coleby Clawson knocks
people's heads off.DE- Jan Jorgensen, need I say more? Denney isn't
too bad either.NT- Wolfley, Fuga. Looks Great.
6. One of those 3 blue-chip recruits never suits up for the cougars due to some
Honor Code violation.7. Zoobs will predict to stay close with
Oklahoma all throughout the offseason, then blame the refs when they get blown
out.8. Zoobs will not admit to getting "blown out" by Oklahoma, but
would call the score "close"...as in their "narrow" 48-24 defeat to the '08
Utes.9. The tdS will win EVERY off-season Nat'l Championship for the
next 6 yrs.10. Jake Heaps will opt not to serve a mission; this
decision will only be criticized if for any reason he leaves the "why?"
1. Heaps will arrive early on campus in January 2010 and will win the starting
job as a true freshman.2. Nelson will be a solid backup. Every team
needs two reliable QBs and these two will play well together and push each
other.3. Lark will transfer before he gets home ala Nelson. But he
will head north to Nelson's old home in Logan. Munns skills don't fit the
spread.4. Ben Olson will be on an NFL roster at the start of the
season - even if only a practice squad. Within two years he will be a starter.
Hopefully some of the Cougs who love to bash him will have done some repenting.
No one other than Luke Staley has had worse luck with injuries and yet been so
talented.5. The hype over these recruits will die down as we start
to prepare for the 09' season. We will be in the game against Oklahoma going
into the 4th but lose by 10. We run the table until losing by a field goal to
TCU. We beat Oregon State in the Vegas bowl by 10 and end up 11-2 and top 15.
"...stuck at a university that will be on probation for the illegal recruitment
of Riley Nelson while he was on his mission. Once USU files suit, and they will,
Provo will be in a HEAP of mess as they will lose scholarships and post season
play."Actually, when a kid leaves on a mission, he can leave
whatever school he is at, and transfer to another one, without penalty to the
school or the kid. Because it is seen as a "Leave of absence from football",
then it is perfectly legal for a kid or a University to recruit football players
while they are on their missions. You must not be a lawyer, are
you? How do you think Ben Olsen ended up at UCLA after his mission? He was
recruited by Carl Dorrell, the head football coach at UCLA, while Olsen was on
his mission in Canada! Get your facts straight buddy! You must
have a degree from the U! HA!Go COUGS!
Bitter ute, The Sugar Bowl must have worn off, and now utes as searching for
something to...Looks like BYU has stole the utes thunder for the rest of 2009
and beyond. While Ben Olson did not finish his career in a BYU
uniform, his best game was kick the utes trash up and down the field. He can
proclaim he went undefeated against the U of WHO.As for Jimmy
Clausen the Dude still has 2 years left and the jury is still out so what was
your point on that one?
You Ute fans are a crack up. Quicherbellyachin! You'd be fired up too to land
the top HS quarterback in the nation and two other blue chippers. Sure, you
never know how any athlete is going to do at the next level, but its about
increasing the probability of success by selecting those whose performance at
the lower level and package of skills suggest the greatest chance of continued
success. Great day to be a Cougar!
What is your inside source of information with the Cougars? Wow, are you really
trying to sell to those who are reading the blogs that you are sitting in on the
coaching meetings and know how the specific players a being positioned for the
Offensive and Defensive squads for the BYU football team? Perhaps you are so
FULL of football knowledge that you can use your mental telepathic powers to
guide Mendenhall to choose who YOU think is the RIGHT Quarter Back for the "09"
season and beyond !!! Give it a rest OK we get it you don't like Riley Nelson
move on dude..
Everyone of you Utah and BYU fans are a bunch of childish puks. Iv'e never seen
or read so many ridiculous statements. Is this really our next generations
leaders and their educations doing this trivial bantering? What a bunch of
immature jerks. I hope none of these posters are going to be our future leaders.
Why can't you get as excited about your own lives and futures as you are about a
First of all, congratulations to three promising young men. I wish the best of
you on-field, but more importantly, I hope for the very best of you off the
field. Please be the sort of men that I can proudly take my son and point and
say, "He is a BYU Cougar!"The ironic thing is that although
you claim to not care about BYU, you are still posting here. Understand? If
you weren't a fan, you wouldn't post. I don't care about hockey and, oh, let's
just say the LA Kings. You see? I don't go to the LA times and talk smack
about LA Kings because I don't care about them or the sport that much. You CARE about BYU. It is important to you. You care so much that you post
your opinions to stories you shouldn't even bother reading. You can
try to deny it. You can pretend that you don't. But you care with a scary
intensity. It almost seems as if you hate BYU more than you like the U or USU
or whatever. Why do you define yourself by what you are not?
He was a WR! As for his MLB experience, its the Cubs (the most
overhyped under achieving team EVER) so it doesn't matter.
BYU always dominates the off-season. In fact I think they are the 2009
Off-Season National Champions.
Heaps is good; not that good. I would agree with the following points made
allready:-I would take Lloyd or Hart ahead of Heaps. You crazy you ask?
Heaps has topped out and won't improve much as many experts have eluded to.
Lloyd and Hart are studs, and Lloyd especially is bigger, faster and stronger
w/a ton more upside in future. But I guess he made his decision. -why isn't anyone giving Heaps garbage for not going on a mission? I thought
it was Faith, Family, etc. first. but none of the fans care now. Talk about a
double standard. Havili to USC and wont serve, then they are looked down upon.
So what is it?-I am a BYU season ticket holder. But until we can
dominate Utah-we haven't done anything. -Would hate to be Larks and
Munns after so much was promised them and now Nelson and Heaps are a part of the
equation. Someone will transfer...-There are many QB's who would
have Heaps numbers in that throwing system; with 4 all american wide receivers;
and a line that gives you all day to throw. 3A competition;
Thats what you'll be saying "Wow" when he trashed the utes going 4-0 and winning
national champions. The bulleye is a red target with a u logo in the
ranked #1 by who? Scout, located in Seattle WASHINGTON? Hmmm. Yea this kid is
#1 alright... in the minds of all byu fans. Good luck, I predict he'll be the
next Jimmy Clausen/Ben Olsen/... the list goes on.
More bantar, more targets, more reasons to hit someone harder.
Im still smiling from ear to ear since hearing about the three blue chip
recruits that committed to BYU. This is huge for BYU and even though these guys
may not contribute on the field for few more years, it is huge for the future of
BYU football. Getting a guy like Jake Heaps, the number 1 rated qb in the nation
and he picked BYU over 25 other schools. Now Heaps, Stout and Apo all can become
recriuts for byu and hopefully bring alot of their teammates and buddies, who
are big time players. As a BYU fan, this has to be one of the most exciting
times for me, it ranks right up there with the 1984 national championship. Lets
hope these guys and put together a team that will bring us another national
Just proof that you might be able to pay for an education but it doesn't mean
you'll get one. Recruiting Nelson while on his mission was a violation of NCAA
rules? Where exactly is that one written? Oh, you pulled it out of thin air?
Nice job! And even if the Cougar coaching staff had initiated contact with
Nelson while he was on his mission (which has been proven false anyway since it
was Nelson's family and his high school coach that contacted BYU first) it's in
no way a violation of anything. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's in the LDS
Missionary Clause of the NCAA Rules and Regulations. Yeah, I missed that one!
Hey brainiacs, Samardzjia was not a WR, he was a TE. He was not fast, if you
compare him to a wide-out, but he was a heck of Tight End. Sorry to throw your
Notre Dame/Fast Wide Receiver argument on its ear.And he's already
pitched something like 30 innings in the bigs since last year.
Does BYU keep the MWC afloat financially? It certainly does in football.
From The Sporting News and the NCAA come these attendance figures:BCS conferences finished in the following order: Big Ten (70,514), Big 12
(61,993), Pac-10 (56,632), ACC (52,806), and the Big East (42,994). The Mountain
West Conference's average home attendance was just 30,166.It looks like
the Mountain West Conference has a way to go before it reaches the status of the
BCS conferences. Without BYU (64,102) its average attendance would have been
about 25,000 per game. Of key interest, when BYU plays on the road, there is a
40% increase in attendance, due to every BYU game being the "Super Bowl" playing
the team you most want to beat and those pesky BYU fans that travel everywhere.
Doing the subtraction. If BYU home games were not counted in the conference
standings the average for a MWC football game would be 25,000, Take out the BYU
effect on road games, and MWC attendance would be 18,700 per conference game,
LAST in Div 1-A.
Sounds like the Ute fans are a little worried.. They can see the writing on the
wall, and are ignorant/oblivious/stupid if they can't see that BYU will be on
the rise and Utah will once again return to mediocrity
"This is the place that we felt we have the best opportunity to win a national
championship,"Yes We Can
Jeff Samardzjia is/was tall but not exactly "athletic" or fast. If he was so
good @ football then why is he currently pitching in the Cubs farm systemHe is doing the same thing as every other kid given a choice between
baseball, basketball and football. Remember *Danny Ainge skipped his draft year
to continue playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. The following year he was a
SECOND round draft choice of the Celtics having tired of trying to hit the curve
ball. Baseball takes less out of your body. The last time BYU played at Notre
Dame, Jeff S. was the difference, No body could cover him. It wasn't just his
6'6" frame but the speed he had in running the post,* See also Kent Graham
6-10 QB, switches to Baseball, Deone Sanders intended to stay with baseball, Air
Jordan wanted to get out of basketball for baseball.
"Sad that a kid that is rated so high will be stuck at a university that will be
on probation for the illegal recruitment of Riley Nelson while he was on his
mission. Once USU files suit, and they will, Provo will be in a HEAP of mess as
they will lose scholarships and post season play. But if that is his goal to
play for an average team, congrats."I'm sorry, what did you say
about BYU's 18 home game winning streak?! Or did you say something
about BYU getting the #1 Quarterback in the nation, I'm not sure I'm hearing you
correctly?! Which one was it?! :)
Glad to hear about the blue chippers but when is Bronco going to recruit some
true blue chip secondary speed? Until then...the Cougs won't make the BCS.
I understand completely what everyone is saying about how these kids have to
prove themselves first. That is always how it has to go. Just like Ben Olsen,
but don't talk trash on these 3 kids and all the cougar fans that are way
excited about this because even though some of my fellow cougar fan comments are
making them sound like complete idiots we all know that everyone on this blog
would be writing the same stuff if their school scored these kids. This is a big
deal. They haven't proven it yet in college but they are high-caliber recruits
for a reason. They are very good football players. So let us cougs enjoy this
awesome moment and don't mind the cougs that sound ridiculous. They are just
really excited. Go MWC and I wish the very best to these 3 kids.
I never invited Riley Nelson to BYU. I don't even know who did. I never thought
it was the right place for him, in my opinion. If BYU wanted to recruit him,
they should have done it during his high school career. I have nothing against
the kid, he sounds like a great person, but I never thought he should have come.
The idea should have never even been concocted.Honestly, Heaps,
Lark, and Munns are all much better suited for BYU's Pro-Style offense. Nelson
would have been better suited for a dual threat system, even like with Utah. So
I'm really not sure what will happen. A possible scenario/solution
could be that Heaps redshirts and serves a mission, and gives time for
Lark/Munns/Nelson to compete for the starting job. By the time he gets to his
first year of eligibility they will all have put in their time and left. Then
Heaps can continue to serve the program for more of the forseeable future.I don't know. I'm no expert. Hopefully it all goes well.
Heaps needs to get busy and convert the LB and WR. If they are as good as
advertized, they should end up as first day NFL draft picks in a few years.
That would be an excellent future revenue stream for the Church!!
Exciting to see the buzz in the football world in Utah. Ute fans will again
learn that only in UTAH will you find the die hard following for the runnin
Utes, Crimson club faithful. Which, bytheway is very cool. However, the Cougars
as well have a state of Utah faithful following as well as an National and
International faithful due to the LDS church and the members that want to send
there young men to school at the "Y" so good luck young recruits and may your
futures continue to be bright.
re: CA Coug | 4:17 p.m. June 4, 2009 >>Also, doesn't the fact that
Texas was after him tell you something???
A little wishful thinking + a lot of bitterness = bigutefan. The day BYU goes on
probation is the day the Utes finally shed their footbal inferiority complex.
Translation: it ain't happenin'. You had a fantastic season and your grand trip
to the BCS, so why the bitterness? Just enjoy the Utes success and know that
their best days are behind them while BYU's lie ahead.
re: SJ Bobkins | 2:24 p.m. June 5, 2009 //BYU has never had a WR
like Ross Apo. Tall, fast, athletic he reminds me of the outstanding Notre Dame
receivers from a few years ago who were uncoverable. In the rare chance that
Brady Quinn could toss a decent ball to them especially Jeff Sammilich, (sp?) it
was a quick 6.//What about Tyler Andersen back in the day? lol.Jeff Samardzjia is/was tall but not exactly "athletic" or fast. If he
was so good @ football then why is he currently pitching in the Cubs farm
system? You did hit the nail on the head about Drama Quinn.
re: Re: Coug Fan | 2:16 p.m. June 5, 2009 Maybe. Its because of a
stong local LDS populace & proximity to the Wasatch front that they know that an
otherwise 3rd tier bowl will be sold out.I can almost guarantee that
the rest of the LV businesses aren't so thrilled to see the same incredibly
frugal horde descend upon of of the most entertaining cities in America.
Don't the best usually want to play the best competition they can? Why would
Heaps sign on to play Northern Iowa, Utah State, Wyoming, SDSU, etc. Why did he
not want to test and prove himself in the Pac-10, Big 12, SEC? Maybe Utah is
I love these Ute fans. They just cant seem to get enough of BYU.
Sad that a kid that is rated so high will be stuck at a university that will be
on probation for the illegal recruitment of Riley Nelson while he was on his
mission. Once USU files suit, and they will, Provo will be in a HEAP of mess as
they will lose scholarships and post season play. But if that is his goal to
play for an average team, congrats. It will take THREE trips to BCS land to top
the Utes, you can't even beat Arizona, and you need the help of refs to beat
Washington, but yep, your going places.
Great recruits and they will certainly get the finest education available in the
MWC. Now the spot light is on Bronco to make the recruits into a winning team.
Congrats BYU!!!! Great Football Tradition Continues!!alot of great
football players have come out of BYU.I am a fan of all Colleges in
Utah, and wish them all success. Great College football here in the state of
Utah. BYU-Utah-WeberState-UtahState-Dixie-S.UtahState-SnowCollege-and all the
rest, "All The Best" Grrrrrrrrrrrreat Recruiting BYU!!!!
I am a Ute fan and I have to admit I hate hearing other Ute fans ripping on BYU
about the Las Vegas Bowl. The Las Vegas Bowl gets first pick of Mountain West
teams, which means they may still pick BYU, even if Utah or anybody else, wins
the conference. If they were taking the champion, I would hope we went there
every year! They just have to get a better opponent (Even though BYU
hasn't exactly helped the situation the last two years. They needed a miracle
to beat a bad UCLA team that had to start a WR @ QB. Last year was a complete
debacle!) I would like to see our champion go to the Poinsettia Bowl.
Typical Ute response is: "You guys can have him, we didn't want him anyway". I
see, so Utah doesn't recruit blue chippers, huh? Interesting. Why can't you guys
at least admit that BYU landed a great recruit, one you guys were salivating
over? It's just like when we beat you in football (it was the refs fault!)
You're just too easy to despise.
It must really chap you Ute fans, and only goes to perpetuate your inferiority
complex, that, in spite of your '05 Fiesta Bowl and '09 Sugar Bowl victories,
the most respected and recognizable program in the MWC is still (say it with me
Drop by your local Borders and thumb through the college rankings in the
Princeton and US News guides. BYU is a national university, yeetaw is a regional
university. BYU's business programs are rated highly, the law school is is the
30's yeetaw's is 40 spaces lower. Now about the "research university". I was the
sports editor of the Ariz State Univ "State Press" when the Arizona schools
joined the PAC-8. 10 years later the PAC-10 decided to expand inviting Colorado
and Texas. Neither school showed interest, offer closed. In the mid 80's BYU was
doing very well knocking off powers like Texas, Texas A and M, etc. Sports
Illustrated did a story on realignment in college football moving BYU to the
PAC. Stanfords president stated BYU was not a research university and wouldnt
fit. What he meant was that BYU is private and LDS. That was the one and only
time the term was used yet yutz fans assume they would be wanted by the PAC
incorrectly. Utah and the PAC have never been mentioned together. In BYU you get
the whole market with just one team.
BYU doesn't have any good graduate progams? Byu masters of accountancy program
is ranked #1. Sounds pretty good to me... But i guess i could be wrong... Also
you mentioned that Utah law school is better than byus. You should check the
rankings before you talk because byu is usually around the mid 40s and utah is
usually in the mid 50's... Sounds like the rest of the nation and the legal
community would disagree with you.
and a lot can happen in a few years. I love that everyone is arguing, throwing
insults, and making predictions on things that are more than a year away.Let's see what happens on the field... and in the firesides (sorry, I
had to throw that in there). My question is, what happens to Riley
Nelson? Can you say shafted?
Utah = Still no NCAA championship title
Apparently you don't read Newsweek, Time, etc about some of the programs at BYU.
Maybe the reading is above your reading skills. Not only is their management
program among the very best, their animation at the tops, their engineering
program is excellent, they have one of the highest ratings in the nation turning
research and projects into acutal production and corporations keep coming to
find out how. As a school administrator I didn't find any
difference between the graduates of Stanford, Yale, Harvard, UCLA or BYU when it
came to teaching skills and the ability to think. Now, Berkley graduates, that
was scary. Not every school needs to have a medical school to be
called a top school. Schools which have the publish or perish rule don't always
have the best professors. I have been in presentation by top researchers and
they are among the most boring presenters in the world. I would hate to be in
one of their classes.
To All The Ben Olson Bashers - Get A Life! I recently had the opportunity to
work out with Ben Olsen at a Utah HS. His life is not what he imagined it would
be when he was 18 and I doubt any of yours is either. He went to UCLA due to the
lack of communication from the "new" coaching staff at BYU. It is apparant BYU
has learned a lesson from that experience as they have been all over Jake since
the 9th grade. As for Ben, the UCLA offense allowed him to be hit so much, he
could not get better. Having been around QBs since my days at SDSU in the
mid-80s (Go Tooty Santos), I have NEVER seen a more beautiful release than what
I saw a few weeks ago. Ben - Andy and the Eagles love you and the fire in you.
All you Zoobie's - life does exist outside of Utah County, you may want to try
I would rather coach Ben Olsen than Alex Smith. Read the 49er pages at the San
Jose Mercury and discover what a malcontent, babied, millionaire, ner-do'well he
turned out to be. He was a great system QB, just as Brian Johnson was. Had Olsen
not left because Lance Reynolds didn't get the BYU head job, he could have been
a quality kid too. Instead he played under center at UCLA rather than in the
shotgun at BYU, and his body suffered for it.When you do your "factual"
comparisons of BYU vs yutz, (why there is a need I don't know can't we all just
be happy?) Consider BYU's top team GPA in Div 1-A, Davey O'Brien , Outland,
Heisman, trophy winners, All-Americans and HOF winners, 3 times the top 10
finishes as the yutz, along with the only non-BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Now
The forerunner of the BCS did exist in 1996 when the team with the best record
in college football played at the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day beating the
favored Kansas State Wildcats. If one has to go back to 1984 in a jealous
attempt to discount BYU's National Championship you need to consider two facts.
The Washington team that beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, and finished second
to BYU, had a very tough bowl opponent, BYU was not allowed to pick their
opponent or their bowl. They took on the schedule and never lost. When the 1985
schedule opened up Washington on the basis of their #2 standing was a heavy
favorite to win the National Championship. They had everyone back with a great
infusion of new talent to begin play. Any doubt whether BYU or Washington
deserved the 1984 National Title was answered with a convincing BYU 38-3 win.
Case closed! BTW-That Michigan team lost 6 starters on offense during the
season, all six were back for the bowl game. They were not the 5 loss team, but
the top 5 team that entered the season.
Bring It! Actually, I am thrilled that BYU and Utah stand at the top of the
MWC. Of course there is that team from Texas but this year the Utah schools
will squash the Boys at TCU. Next up....the BCS schools.
BYU has never had a WR like Ross Apo. Tall, fast, athletic he reminds me of the
outstanding Notre Dame receivers from a few years ago who were uncoverable. In
the rare chance that Brady Quinn could toss a decent ball to them especially
Jeff Sammilich, (sp?) it was a quick 6. We have great route runners,
disciplined, rarely dropping a ball, not the complete package. BYU's defense is
build on the speed of the outside linebackers and the strength of the inside
guys. 2010 class may be best know for the incoming linebackers headed up by 5th
in the country Stout.I am amazed that any positive news on BYU gets a
greater pouring out of nasty yutz fan putdowns, than BYU fans wishing to vent
their excitement. There has to be a mental diagnosis that covers that behavior.
Apathy not jealousy is the opposite of love, Our yutz friends have a secret love
for the Cougars. I have never commented on any yutz story, but I applaud when
they are successful, just as I enjoy BYU's great success. I don't feel
threatened, insecure, nor need to rain on the yutz parade
good thing the kid has a good year and a half till he plays for byu, hope he
dont get hurt... like so many good high school students do...
"I find it hilarious that the Ute fans keep saying, "Have fun in Vegas" in a
condescending manner. It is as if they are saying we are going to win the
conference championship this year."The tdS won the MWC in '06 and
'07. They did NOT win the conference in '05 or '08. Nevertheless, that didn't
stop the kewgs from playing in Vegas in each of the last 4 yrs. The LV Bowl
receives the 1st pick of MWC teams, but are not required to select the MWC
Champion. Their committee hasn't demonstrated much objectivity in who they
byu= still no bcs...
To Riley..., don't transfer to Weber or SUU, Cooper and Higgins are both better
quarterbacks than you are at this point. They are probably the best two
quarterbacks in the state. You have the best chance of beating out Maxie. Stay
in the bubble.
If this doesn't mean so much to the Utes, then why are all the Ute fans getting
so worked up. Unbelievable the hateful comments. Wow, I'm laughing all the way
from Seattle. SOOOOO glad I don't live in Utah, the rivalry is getting way too
out of control. It's like the next Gaza Strip lolWay to go BYU on
the 3 recruits. Future is looking bright
BYU will always have great offensive players, they will have good linebackers(
Morris, Kehl), THEY NEED DBs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then and only then will I be
impressed. That said good pick up for the cougs and the MWC, It shows that the
last few years are briging recognition to the conference and teams within the
Loved your post. However, I'd add that students truly serious about their
educations and about maximizing their opportunities regardless of location get
out of Utah altogether.
I think it is safe to assume that the Utes won't crash the BCS this year; most
rational Ute fans will admit that. Given this, I find it hilarious that the Ute
fans keep saying, "Have fun in Vegas" in a condescending manner. It is as if
they are saying we are going to win the conference championship this year. Thank
you, I look forward to the Cougars being in the Las Vegas Bowl. Yes I would
rather they play in a BCS bowl, but it likely won't happen for either team this
year, so Vegas is looking great!
These young men sound like fine athletes, but as a Ute, Im not too worried about
it. This Heaps kid reminds me of another highly touted #1-ranked QB; and Im not
even referring to Ben Olson. Try Jimmy Clausen.Compare these 2 prep
stars [as in prior to enrolling at Notre Dame]:JC: 63
200-lbs 4.7-40ydJH: 62 195-lbs 4.8-40ydThe real
difference between these two players is that Clausen signed with a class with 13
Blue-Chips (4 and 5 star recruits), and into program that actually had a REAL
winning tradition and national cache. And a CBS contract. And hows
that worked out for them? By barely escaping the Aztecs on their home field.
And the Utes STILL brought home the Sugar Bowl hardware. But hey
Irish fans out there. Way to with that Hawaii hardware. You sure fared better
than the tdS in Vegas.
"Utes will always be better than them win or lose..."I'm sorry, I
couldn't hear you, I have 2 MWC championships stuck in my ear and an 18 game
home winning streak stuck in the other ear! What did you say?!
I did a search for Jake Heaps on You tube. What turns up is a number of videos
of game highlights. The kids amazing. He plays in the pocket very well taking
shot gun snaps. Even under pressure he finds the open receiver. Some of the
passes I wonder, how did he find that guy to throw two with some one in his
face. Great player. Great pick up for BYU.
"This thing today wasn't about me," he said. "This press conference was not
about me. It was about these guys and BYU as a collective group. It was about
getting these guys in the spotlight and BYU in the spotlight. If I have to take
the heat for that for awhile, then I'll definitely do that." -Heapsmr getting ahead of your self, your just playing into Heaps hands when you say
the things you say.
Woe Nellie. Let's slow down a little bit here and remember that Heaps may never
start for the zoobs let alone lead the TDS to a national championship. This is
the most laughable thing I've ever read. I had to look again to make sure this
wasn't a Dick Harmon article. Way to get the YBU fans all stirred up with
visions of national championships. Bah-ha-ha-ha-ha . . . stop it I'm going to
If Utah is a safety school, what is Utah State? So here's what the
true university/college positions are here in Utah:BYU - Top Choice
for LDS studentsUtah - Top Choice for non-LDS students; safety school for
LDS students who want to go to a reputable school but can't get into BYU.Utah State - The Beehive State's truest safety schoolWeber State -
Safety School for residents of Weber CountySouthern Utah - Rural Utah's
Safety SchoolUtah Valley State - Safety School for LDS students who can't
get into BYU but want to be near BYU.Dixie State - Safety Party SchoolSnow College - Slow KnowledgeSalt Lake Community College - Greater Salt
Lake Area High SchoolCollege of Eastern Utah - Really, still calling
yourself a "college"?Westminster - For those students who want a private
school education with all of the cost, but none of the quality.
I just love how Heaps made his announcement in Salt Lake. Right in the Utes back
yard. I think this kids laying ownership to your house uties.
BYU FANS are ridicoulis! They play their classic Were humble card, and then talk
so much trash about what? They celebrate mediocrity! It's all over these
boards. Just read them, they are more excited about the potential of things
instead of reality. That's why Utah has BCS bowls under their belt and BYU has
nothing. What planet do you live on BYU fans where you can talk trash to Ute
fans about Winning and bowls? You have absolutely nothing to show for it. Do I
remember that you went to the LAs vegas bowl? NO! Do I remember Utah beating
Alabama in the Sugar BOwl? YES! Point MAde.
How come you guys tear a LDS recruit or kid who signs with another school and
decides not to go on a mission, but if he signs with you guys "BYU" It's okay
and suddenly it's "His decision" or, "He will have other mission oppurtunities.
You guys even question his testimony or whatever. Give me a break and I have
read them on posts regarding recruits over the years. You guys are the biggest
hypocrites. You only applaud if it suits or fits your desires. Thank the Lord I
have no strong affiliation with that football program or it's judgemental fans.
Need I remind everybody how Alex Smith was recruited out of high school? Or
Eric Weddle? Now both became 1st round draft picks in the NFL and were barely
recognized coming out of high school. Doesn't matter how many stars they have
from their Jr. season in high school. How do you think the U has become so
successful lately? Not by signing a bunch of "blue-chippers". Keep dreaming
Kewgs. Proof will be on the field (not high school either). Let's wait and
Careful when you say NC. I would love to see that but those bcs guys and media
won't let it happen. We will see. ONE GAME AT A TIME per LE statement. Our goal,
Beat Utah #1, win MWC #2 and win the bowl game #3 and HOPE for NC!
Give the "y" the old rear view mirror look!
28-0 A machine I tell ya. This kid is a football machine.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! It is so freaking funny to see all of the jealous yoot comments
being posted on these Jake Heaps articles! Really makes my day and will give me
plenty to laugh about in addition to all the usual yoot innanities. Yesterday 3
top recruits commit to BYU while one of yootah's players is running from the
cops and being arrested. It's a great week to be a BYU fan! And if any of u
bandwagon yoot fans want to join us, forget about it!
Bronco recruits ...Never knew Utes had a BCS title ... Hmmmm ....
I'll check on that ........
I've seen Heaps play a few times. I don't think he'll beat out Nelson. Give me a
QB thats been over looked or not highly rated (Alex Smith). I'd rather have a QB
with a chip on his shoulder. He is a marketing machine. He has great stats but
has it been said that his team is a 3A team. His stats don't even come close to
Riley Nelson's stats (3A). Give me Lloyd, Hart or Pederson. Oh by the way Utah's
7 on 7 team in Vegas with Hart and Lloyd made it to the championship game while
Heaps mighty Washington team was out in the 1st round. Hmmmm.
It's just the fact that he was lied too! Here's a kid that set the all time
passing yardage record for the state of Utah and many other records in this
state and I guarantee you that this signing of Heaps will put an end to Rileys
career if he stays at the "Wonderful Ones" school. Merely because of the
publicity Heaps has got! If I were Nelson I would be opting out real soon and
taking the year penalty or whatever, because it's his career that is being
flushed by the almighty ones. Just like the politics in this state lies, lies
lies and power, power, power. As for USU going 2-9 the next year or thereafter
you can forget that, because we now have a coach and staff in place that will
get the right kids and compete!
So many Utes are already playing into the hands of this Heaps kid. can we just
keep our mouths shut.
What do you suppose Bronco told poor Mr. Nelson about his playing prospects
when he returns from his mission?
Utah is still tne best Non-BCS school out there. Why don't you start dominating
your non conference opponents? Then that will actually be considered debatable.
BYU cannot win on a national level. They are scared to win on a national level.
They don't work hard enough to win on a national level. When they accept their
role as the underdogs and not the eilitists they will win some big games. Until
that time they will fall short of expectations and make it to the vegas bowl
every year if they are lucky while Brighams Young's Real University, that he was
actually alive to found, will accept the underdog role and destroy the
your right, we care soooo much more about your program...it was you guys
that won the sugar bowl last year right?no?Then it had to be you
guys that won the fiesta bowl right? No?well you won the vegas bowl
at least right?NO!?!?!?See, we utah fans just like to remind you of
your place right now.Sure you had your glory years (some time ago) but its
the time of the ute... maybe with these recruits you can do something great, but
a certain ben olsen comes to mind.Oh, and did you forget you have to stop
the other team from scoring as well?(Max hall threw 3 interceptions during
You can have all the talent in the world but when the U of U defense is staring
you down and making you think extra fast that #1 HS QB rating means nothing. It
doesn't matter how good your arm is if you throw it to the other team right Max?
I heard the same things about Max that I am hearing about Jake great in High
School.........good arm.......smart...........athletic....etc. Then they get to
BYU and.......well..you know the rest.
Im a ute all the way and i can speak for my self and all my fellow ute fans. We
are shaking in our boots over this kid.
Good recruits obviously don't do jack for BYU when all they do is listen to the
fans and the media and don't do any hard work. Until they learn to shut up and
work 10-3 will be the best they do.
What has BYU done since the MWC was even formed? What they did last year and
thats it. Fall short of expectations. To call BYU the premirere team in the MWC
when they can't even make it into a BCS game, is a joke.
>I guess the Utes will have to settle for blah, blah, blah...Congratulations! Even the University of Utah can have a bit of success every
so often. That gives hope to all the other perennial also-rans that they can
have their 15 minutes as well. Again, congratulations on overcoming such
duanting obstacles, and best of luck in your future endeavors!
5 out of 7 sorry. My fingers slipped
After I almost graduated I started delivering pizza. Some days I even get tips.
It's awesome. Now I can sit around in my underwear all morning and bag on the
Cougars. I am not bitter that they were legitimate number ones and the country
still treats my team like #2.
Congrats BYU great day for you and the MWC. However it's going to take more
than 3 players to try to overcome your rival. You've lost 6 out of 8, 11 out of
17, haven't beat a ranked non-conference opponent since being in the MWC, and
may never make it to a BCS bowl. Those are the facts. Now go cry
I feel bad for BYU cause everytime they brag about what great players they have,
they really don't. Utes will always be better than them win or lose...Though I guess I hope they have a better luck this year..hmmmmm. Go UTES!!!!
why does everyone at byu think they're winning a championship when he hasn't
even enrolled let alone taken a snap? a good qb isn't the only key to a bcs
team. it takes a good Defense, something BYU CLEARLY lacks. You already have a
good QB and you still haven't even gone 11-1, clearly it takes more than a good
Why is every cougar freaking out? you haven't won a national championship with
this guy yet... last time i checked, you had a lot of over hype last year, and
you finished 10-3 with loses to Arizona. Max Hall is probably as good as this
kid will be, he won't be the next Sam Bradford. Relax BYU fans and wait to see
how he turns out before jumping all over him.
for caring about this story so much and taking the time to comment on it. We
appreciate your support and know that you spend more time thinking about BYU
football than Utah football. We get it. BYU football is more interesting. I have
NO IDEA what you would do with your lives without BYU football-- I really don't.
Research - like cold fusion. The lase overall school rankings (academic) had
BYU in the 70's and Utah in the 140's.This article was about 3
recruits to BYU, and all I read is "well, Utah has 2 BCS..." Wow, sour grapes.
The inferiority complex is astounding. With two BCS bowl victories Ute fans
should be less annoying not more, but rather than be happy that BYU landed some
great recruits which will ensure that the rivalry is exciting for years to come,
they have to try to make themselves sound important or disrespect BYU. My
favorite little brother comments are: 1) "Utah has two BCS bowl victories with
two star recruits," as if every team doesn't have two star walk-on players -
especially kickers - that contribute significantly; and 2) "Of course they chose
BYU because they're mormon" which is supposed to imply that either the players
were somehow forced into it by their parents or that blue chip Mormon recruits
will just fall into BYU's lap. Both comments are just reverse snobbery. Utes
have to try to feel superior to BYU somehow. Both BYU and Utah get a lot of
mormon recruits they wouldn't otherwise get because they're in Utah and lead by
Mormon coaching staffs. Next time Utah lands a big mormon recruit I'm going to
post "of course they went to Utah, they're mormon and so their parents probably
Even a PEWT fan has to recognize this as a great day for BYU. But they will
continue to act three years old.
Check the ratings, BYU and Utah are both on par for law schools. Utah is
superior in terms of research, medicine, engineering etc. BYU is not a research
University, and besides a great Business School and a good law school, it is
largely known as an undergraduate school. It's why the PAC 10 has already said
BYU won't get in, but Utah actually could. BYU takes the cake with the Business
School and a few other things. Both are great schools, just different strengths.
I prefer Utah for the diversity and because it is not in Utah County (I
graduated from both) as well as the non-dillusional sports fans. I respect BYU
as an undergraduate academic institution and for their MBA and JD programs, but
other than that Utah takes home the prize. I may have made some errors in typing
this...please refrain from discrediting my argument because of those. Thanks.
Why are the best days for BYU football always during the offseason?
In light of this news it is more apparent than ever that Riley made the biggest
mistake of his life transferring to BYU he probably will never take a snap at
BYU unless their first team gets pulled. If you're a football player
you want to play football, what good will sitting on the bench and playing a 2nd
or 3rd string QB your whole college career do for him? Nadda. Zilch. Zero. USU
could have offered him a starting position his whole college career giving him
more exposure to the game.
good job guys.... now you have a year to pull your heads out and change your
Way to go Jake! There's leadership and the beginning of an excited unified team
that will show the world! You go!
Now if the Cougars can land A'i Ho'Ching from Alta (top 20 LB nationally) this
would clearly set the stage for some great years of football in Provo. I'm an
Aggie but honestly this is so great for football here in the state that I'm even
excited about it.
Let's hope we have a new coach when he starts throwing the ball for us. We need
someone that understand the offense not defense to get the best from this young
lad. I hope he doesn't change his mine after his mission when he sees the
writing on the wall.
Get off Riley. It is over.... he transferred. End of story. He may or may not
start next year, but it is still better than getting smacked around on a 2-9
Relax..its only Football!
their top rated QBs, their firesides, their non-contact practices, and all the
quests they can handle. I guess the Utes will have to settle for the Sugarbowl
trophy, The Fiesta Bowl trophy, the 2 undefeated seasons (quest perfected
twice!), bustin the BCS twice, Nick Saban humbled, the 2 #1 picks in the same
year, the total dominance in all major sports in the MWC in 2009, Coach Whit's
killer calves (better to kick kittens with), and the fact that at the end of the
day..Heaps will end up flat on his back questioning his decision to come TSDSU
and why he his o line can't keep these runnin UTES from runnin him over. GO
I don't think Bronco will be around long enough to get that national title
dream. When these boys return from their missions it will be during a transition
period of a new coach in the program.
Lets make football real easy. BYU is the MWC champ forever and only the Patriots
can win the NFL.Seriously, resting on past laurels and projecting
greatness because of potential is ridiculous at best.
I wonder why all the Cougar fans seem excited these guys will not serve a
mission. When Havili was being recruited and chose USC he was hammered for not
serving a mission. It just shows there are many fans that could not care less
about a mission, they just want to win football games. Is that what Bronco
if you transfer to Weber St. or Southern Utah you can play in Sept. without
sitting out a year. Hurry get your papers filled out now !!
To the second confessor, I'm afraid your little brother's decision
making ability doesn't define a "good" law school. Sadly, if your proof for
determining the better of the law schools centers on where your brother chose,
you're only showing your inability to reason.
I get a kick out of reading these comments because of the terrible English of
apparently native speakers and even proud college graduates. It seems that
neither school is particularly good judging by the level of lingual competence
of their graduates shown in these comments.
"bcs buster" is an idiotic term - even more so is the term "original bcs
buster". Who cares about the bcs unless you are playing for a national
championship. (unless it really is all about the millions of dollars that the
team and conference get)...
Get over yourself - To lightning fast was obviously knows the rules and was
making a joke. Hence the smiley face :). By the way, technically he isn't a BYU
student yet and hasn't signed the honor code, so "TECHNICALLY" he isn't out of
compliance because he's isn't yet bound by the rule.
I also have to say, most of you...both BYU and UTE fans who've made comments on
here must be high school juniors, that's the only way to explain the immature
nature of your comments. Football is a game...not life. Yet you seem to take
great pleasure in bashing the opposite party. I'm a huge BYU fan, but I watched
the BYU/UTAH game last year side by side with UTE fans and we had a great time.
Also, I was most certainly rooting for the UTEs when they beat the living
daylights out of Alabama last year. BYU/UTAH...we need each other. I know the
silly immature comments will continue, but it's embarrassing, especially when it
comes from a Coug fan! Even more so when I know many of you are members of the
church. Shame on you!
the next ben olson?
I hope they do serve missions...much more important than football. However, I
certainly look forward to seeing them play! Go Cougs!
BYU = Good environment but mediocre school???? I don't know what planet you're
living on. Ever hear of the Marriott School of Management, one of the best in
the country, consistently on par with the Ivy League schools? Ever read that
Princeton Review? BYU's library was #1 in the country three years ago and is
still near the top, right next to Yale and Harvard. How about animation? BYU's
program is the best in the country and has special partnerships with big name
companies. How about gov't jobs? BYU is a major feeder for the CIA, FBI, and
NSA. You are truly delusional in calling BYU a mediocre school, when it is one
of the best in the country, and rated the #1 best bang for your buck as well.Cougar football is starting another dynasty. The cougs can
realistically pull of 10 wins this year, maybe 11 if it can turn the tables in
the MWC. Add star recruits the next coupla years, and it's a great time to be a
cougar fan. And to the Aggie fans, suck it up. You lost Nelson and will lose
on the field again this year.
continue to be dominated by utah and tcu - BYU has gone undefeated in conference
two of the last three seasons - Utah better follow up last season with one like
it before they talk anything like "continue to dominate". That in fact would
give Utah a chance at playing for a national championship, if they could muster
up a consistent effort this year. So from what I hear you are predicting that?
"Earrings and other body piercing are not acceptable." (BYU Honor Code)Technically he is not in compiance I could care less about what guys have in
their ears. However, you should get your facts straight. The one set is for
Let's hope that BYU, Utah, TCU and the others in the MWC continue to
raise their profile. What makes a power conference is at least 3 dominant
teams. I enjoyed watching Utah thrash Alabama and go undefeated.
Go Utes! Respect for the conference will come by continually
winning on the field.
Apo and Heaps WILL NOT serve missions. They are enrolling early with the intent
to start as true freshmen and there is no reason to think they won't. But for
any of you worried about them not taking missions - Mendenhall will have them on
a fireside circuit that will have them wishing they were on an actual mission.
These kids will NOT lack for missionary opportunities if they become one of the
best QB-WR combos at the Y. On paper there is no reason to think they won't.
I think your all jealous you didn't get those guys, so hush. I hope you guys
were happy with your season, cuz it ain't going to happen again. People are
going to get sick of see Whit with too tight of shirts on.
All 3 will serve missions and won't really be seen in the program for 3-4 years
and by they who knows what you got. BYU is a program in decline (again) and the
MWC will continue to be dominated by Utah and TCU.
First, he has only one set in so he is still technically in compliance :). Don't
worry, once he gets in the program under Bronco he won't be flashing the bling.
I'm sure he is a great kid. But he is also is a WR so he simply has a little
bling in his genetics - just ask Chambers. Hopefully your kids have learned to
look a little beyond what is in someone's ears to discern what kind of person
Their will be so many nationl championships.
A 17 year old thanks his publicist and then goes on to talk about winning
multiple national championships. This is a bigger bullseye than the stupid
Quest. And great will be the fall.
Many schools have the talent to go undefeated. In 2004 and 2008 Utah had
schedules that worked. Had Utah and BYU reversed those schedules in those
years, and played the other guys schedule, Utah would not have gone undefeated.
They would not have beaten USC on the road in 2004 and they would have not
beaten TCU last year had the game been played in Texas. These recruits are
great, one will most likely not play for BYU. That's just the way it is. Let
the kids have their day in the sun and then sit back and let the schedule makers
do their things. Their is a coach in East Salt saying wow, I glad I didn't get
that schedule this year. We sure could use the Oklahoma money though. There is
a coach down South in Provo saying we need the money but look at the schedule I
have to play. Could I play my rivals schedule this coming season. Would have
like to have played it last year also.
On another June championship. Let's make a deal...Utah will keep winning the
November and January championships, and BYU can keep winning the February and
What lies are you BYU faiths going to tell Riley Nelson now? Just more of the
same-ROTTEN LYING RECRUITING!
I find it ironic that BYU signs all these high school recruits but still depends
on the snow college walk-ons to be their starters and future stars in the NFL.
Back to reality!
Excellent grab for BYU; way to go. I'm very excited to see the caliber of the
TDS go up. That does nothing but improve the clout of the MWC; not to mention
the Utes. Let's be honest, beating a mediocre BYU isn't nearly as cool as
beating a successful one.Go Utes!
Come onn!!!!!!!!!!!! Alex Smith is a bust. Brian Johnson didn't get drafted.
Neither is worth a tinkers damn. Hang on to your t-shirts from the two BCS bowl
games. That will be your only ones. Plus they will help you remember when you
come out of your drunken fog that you won two BCS bowl games. Yewts fans are
losers of the greatest magnitude. BYU is on the rise, utes are going in the
tank. Go kick someone that is unconscious. What a bunch of thugs.
Congratulations BYU. I think BYU fans need to temper their enthusiasm a bit.
Many players like this roll into the big programs every year. Some pan out,
some don't. The fact that this is such a big deal is an indication of BYU's
(and Utah's) status of on-the-outside-looking-in when it comes to college
football. Utah has proven that it can put together an amazing team
every four years or so. The lack of 10 recruits year in and year out like the
ones recently landed by BYU makes it tough to compete at the level of the BCS
every year. Hopefully Utah will keep doing what its doing and BYU
will bring some respect to the MWC by busting the BCS.
YOU GUYS KEEP MENTIONING MISSION. HE HAS SAID THAT HE IS NOT GOING ON A MISSION
SO HE WILL BE READY IN A YEAR
Think about this - in 2010 BYU will put juniors Mckay Jacobson and O'Neill
Chambers alongside Apo. The days of the slow, unathletic wide receivers at BYU
are long gone folks!!!
Sounds like alot of hype. Remember last years hype i.e. the quest. Hype is fun,
enjoy cougar breaths, because that is all you have become, alot of hype.
Apo will be very good, I'm sure of that...but is he really wearing earings to
the announcement? I don't want my kids growing up seeing a star like that,
something totally against what the Prophet has counseled us. BYU = LDS church,
and that's not a good example. I hope he straightens up. I'm not trying to judge
I'm just saying that's a big thing to young kids.
Just wanted you to know that I chose Utah over BYU because they have a great
medical school. Does BYU have a medical school. Nursing doesn't count. My 3.9
GPA would have been good anywhere. I chose Utah because it simply offers more
than history. My younger brother chose to attend Utah Law School simply because
it's better. Utah is a research instiitution. Their graduate programs are
superior to anything BYU has to offer. BYU is good due to it's environment. They
can pick and choose who they want due to the environment. My parents
attended BYU and I was raised into thinking it was better. Great environment,
"BYU has been known for having a great defense, and I think Zac will add to
that." Haha, BYU has never had a "great" defense...not in the last 10 years
atleast. These players sound like just another dillusional piece of the program.
They are excited, but they haven't even graduated high school yet and they are
talking like celebrities already. Thing is, all 3 of them will (well, SHOULD) be
serving missions soon (if they truly honor BYU's tradition like they say they
do) and it won't really be until 2013 that we see if they even have stuff.
Congrats to the kids though, they are obviously excited. Maybe BYU will be on
the national stage in 5 years....we'll see.
Obviously there are no guarantees but Heaps seems to have everything needed to
be a very successful BYU QB - as a true freshman. He is very accurate, extremely
quick release, is a John Beck-like workaholic, and has Jim McMahon's confidence.
And he helped bring in potentially one of the most skilled receivers we have
ever had in Apo. It will be interesting to see what two extremely talented kids
can do when they enroll early and will not interrupt their physical development
for two years to serve a mission. If they stay healthy there is no reason they
won't own the BYU record books. What about the other QBs? Riley
Nelson is a good gritty player and will have the benefit of a full year in the
system. Both Lark and Munns will return in time to be in the 2010 competition
too. All three were highly rated QBs but none were the number one QB recruit in
the nation. I predict, particularly because he is enrolling early, Heaps will be
our starter as a true freshman in 2010, Nelson 2nd string, Munns 3rd and Lark
transfers before he comes home - to Utah State or Weber.
its all about how you develop that talent as a coach.
And Jonny Harline is STILL open!!!
As a Ute fan, I say congrats to these kids and BYU. Sounds like a good deal and
good kids. I hope it works out for them. MWC football keeps getting
stronger!Of course scouting teenagers is not 100% accurate or Notre
Dame would be a top five BCS team at THE END of every year, not the beginning.
...6 months make. In January, Ute fans were harping on BYU's inability to land
bigtime recruits and declaring that BYU would never out recruit Utah again. Now
that BYU's putting together a monster 2010 class, Utes are saying that
recruiting top shelf talent doesn't matter.Methinks they do protest
You guys don't need this Heaps! You've got Riley Nelson!!! Ha ha ha. Wonder
if Nelson is regretting his transfer yet? : )
We tried but it is your decision, so the best of luck at BYU.
Congratulations Mr. Heap you just earned yourself a front row seat to the Las
Vegas bowl! Not only that, but you will learn how to lose every big game you
play at BYU. What a decision! We have won TWO BCS games in the last 5 years
with 2 star athletes, have fun looking up to your big brother the next 6 years!
Been a lifetime supporter of BYU football. The O-line is big. The Sequoia
Trees are also very big, but even being a little guy I can still outrun and
outmaneuver the Sequoias. Smaller, more athletic guys can outrun BYU big fat O
Olsen was 1-1 against the Utes, including a 44-10 thrashing. Thanks for your
stupid comment though.
I am posting now at 10:00 am in Germany, but it will list at 1 am in Utah. Funny and some very stupid comments, and some very mean spirited
comments.I like the kids attitude. I would be worried if he came in
and said he hopes they might win the MWC championship and then perhaps a NC.
You set your goals high and then shoot towards them. As far as the
slams on BYU's quest. I believe it says in Matthew 5:48 and # Nephi 12:48 that
we should be perfect. SO if it is good enough for our Lord to seek perfection I
guess it is good enough for his Church's University to expect that.Congrats to the Utes on their two great two BCS wins, but it was COngress who
set that in motion, not the Utes. Congress starting talking about the
unfairness of the BCS system, so the BCS changed it to allow non BCS conferences
to have an outside chance.Suggestion for a national championship.
Have a BCS champion and a non BCS champion and have the two play each other the
next week for the national championship.
is heaps or apo going on missions?? it only said stout is? because although i am
a ute fan, i would like to see these two play, seems like a good combo because
of the chemistry off the field as well.anyway, GO UTES
Almost midnight- LOL. Different schedules ;)Congrats to the cougs,
I'm still loving the 09 Utah class. Go Utes.
EVERY position is getting better recruited at the Y. BYU has been recruiting
several top 30 to top 10 Offensive lineman the past few years. Which tells you
their not only big fat guys, but they are strong, mobile athletes who have good
size and will protect well. With O-lineman it's not all about how fast you can
run a forty, it's how quick you pull and curl and how well you sustain your
blocks. The O-line recruits wouldn't be that highly ranked if I didn't do that
well. And I will say without hesitation BYU has some of the best O-lineman in
the country, at least the best of non-BCS teams. As far as
complaining about defense, every position on defense is also getting better.
People keep defining BYU's defense based on 2008 and it's really annoying. Our
defense was DOMINANT in 2007 and 2008, and that was with crappy DB's. We're
getting better DB's, better LB's and solid DE's and DT's, with more team speed.
Skill players on offense are also gaining speed. So Go Cougars!
we're on the way up.
Heaps looks like he is auditioning for his NFL number one draft pick
interview. This is going to be good.
Funny that with all BYU's legacy they can't get invited to the national stage of
a BCS game.
You're are correct. TV does provide the proof. You really believe
that if the BYU audience was as large as you believe, the networks would let the
MTN. stand in the way of leveraging that audience for economic gain? The MTN. with its limited coverage is the best deal BYU has available. If the national BYU following was as large a you contend, the networks
and BYU would find a way to leverage that audience. As it is, the networks are
happy to let BYU languish on the MTN.The BYU following is just not
significant enough to draw the attention of the national networks. The truth is in the history of the MWC Utah has had more truely national (not
regional) coverage than BYU.
BYU Dynasty will continue, Max Hall finishes up his senior season, and Jake
Heaps will be on the cougs roster the following year! Good job Bronco! And Go
I graduated from the University of Utah. I thought it was OK. But I really had
my heart set on going to BYU, but my 3.4 GPA wasn't good enough for the Y., even
though it did earn me a scholarship at the U. So Woo-Hoo. Thank you Eccles
family for that. I really like many, not most ... well, maybe most ... of my
classmates at the U. had, like I had, picked Utah as their safety school. The
school they wanted to get into had turned them down, so they had to go to the U.
No, that school wasn't universally BYU, although that was true of many of my
classmates. Some had wanted to go to Arizona State or Stanford or the Air Force.
One guy had even wanted to go to Colorado State, but he too had to settle for
the U.In truth, that's what we are ... a combination commuter school
and safety school.
What do you know about Las Vegas?? We have a reserved room for you and a
teammate on December 25th.
This makes no sense to me. We were founded by Brigham Young first, just because
he didn't give us his name doesn't mean that he loved us any less.
I think the reverse is true about "paving the way". BYU has definitely paved
the way through the years.I agree that Utes have the last few years
have done great but paving the way on the national front...sorry but that is
Honestly, the only thing that irks me more than the typical drunken Ute fan
obnoxiously horning in with ignorant comments on what is obviously a great day
for BYU (my apologies to the Ute fans who were actually civil and congratulatory
-- thank you!), is the also typical stone-cold sober yet somehow even more
obnoxious Cougar fan who makes absolutely asinine comments about the Utes. Even
though I bleed blue, I was proud to be a Utahn when the Utes beat the tar out of
the mighty Tide this year -- and I was born and raised in California. I don't
have anything against good ol' rivalry smack-talk, but be imaginative or
humorous, or at least show the IQ of something greater than a pale of dirt.
These guys need something the cheer about, their season in ruins, a season ahead
that they are already giving up on.. come on guys at least let them celebrate a
Delivering pizzas is an honorable profession. I have been proud to represent
Papa John's on many a doorstep over the years. That I graduated from the U. has
nothing to do with my current profession. It's that I majored in philosophy. As
such, I would've been delivering pizzas even if I had graduated from the Y.
Somewhere, someone will say, "Well, yes, if only you had done better in school,
you could have ... blah, blah, blah, ... gotten into BYU." Well, look. I may not
have chosen the U., but it chose me. And I chose Kant. And now people are
choosing pepperoni-and-olives with a side of jalapeno, and I'm trying to figure
out what such an order means. For real.
Dont you fans ever sleep? its almost mid night and your still posting about this
Dang! Their cheerleaders are way better than ours.
You know that if the Utes had a big signing day like this, they would all be on
their high horse as well. BYU rarely gets this caliber of recruits in bunches,
so let the Cougs have their day in the sun and we'll see what happens in a few
years when these kids are collectively killing the Utes on the field.
By the number of posts from ewe fans you can tell little brother is annoyed by
all of the press. It can be annoying to try and take the spot light from your
big brother only to be beat down once again. For all of the Sugar Bowl hype I
am yet to hear about any great recruits coming to LEN. Keep hanging on every
word that is blue little brother and keep the obsessed comments and the
inferiority complex in high gear. :)
are jealous and it is showing. See you again in 4 years as that seems to be how
often Utah is any good.
Dang! The Cougs pulled off a coup on the recruiting front. Good thing I have
the tips from my pizza delivery route to look forward to.
Congrts BYU on a nice signing...sure hope he can run fast.
BYU's national following is evident in the fact that BYU has always been the
only team in the MWC (previously WAC)to consistently get placed on national TV
broadcasts. If not for the mtn, national distribution of BYU games would
continue. Sorry Ute fans, the ratings for the Cougars always exceed their
neighbors in Salt Lake.
Large national following??? Not even close!!!The reality is that
BYU has a broadly dispersed Mormon following.Even if every Non-Utah
Mormon in the US were a BYU fan it would not even come close to a large national
Be nice or the screener will not publish your blog. I luv BYU I think they will
win a national championship next year!!!!! I luv Byu Ha Ha
BYU the premier team in the MWC? Only in Provo. Congratulations to the BYU team
for landing such good recruits. Now hope they stick. I hope BYU keeps getting
better, because it will be even more gratifying when the Utes beat them. As for
the NC, whichever non-BCS team gets there first, they can thank Utah for paving
the way. Go Utes!
With all the Cougar football talk you would think that they beat a team with a
winning record or something.
that he didn't sign with Utah State. We are on the rise. Watch out BYU. Watch
BYU has a national following and Utah never will. The truth is that Utah has
been a great team for the past 10 years but they still have a small following
except for the Salt Lake valley. BYU has a large national following, and
established program, superbowl qbs, a legendary coach, great facilities, quality
wins, etc. BYU is constantly attacked for two reasons: one, they are the
premiere team in the MWC, and second, they are owned by the church.
After the 2004 season, BYU fans were saying the about the Utes recruiting
class:"Doesn't look like the BCS win has done much for the Utes
recruiting yet."And yet 4 years later, the Utes found themselves
back on top. We win BCS games by developing athletic 3-star recruits. We get a
few big-time flashy recruits each year, but mostly it's the 3-star guys that we
thrive on. Can't argue with the results.
For all the Ute posters who think that serving a mission ends a career you need
look no further than your own Paul Kruger to disprove that notion. He served a
mission and look where he is now. Ben Olson was more a victim of circumstance
with the unsettled coaching situation at BYU. The program at BYU now is very
stable and is a perfect fit for Heaps (see ESPN article by Luginbill which backs
this up). The Utes have had a nice run and a well deserved BCS win
last year but I feel the pendulum swinging pretty quickly back to BYU. Doesn't
look like the BCS win has done much for the Utes recruiting yet. Must be
frustrating to have come off a season like that and still have to read all about
I'm glad he signed with BYU. It helps our conference and allows BYU to win 10
games per year and allows for a meaningful game at the end of the year. It also
stirs the rivalry even more. We (Utes)will continue to sign the extremely fast
"B" athlete and will develop them with our defense as the anchor. Our defense
will still be better than most offenses and the best team will prevail in the
end. Defense wins more than not.Go Utes!
It usually works out great when a 17 year old junior HS quarterback hires a
publicist and holds a news conference to announce the school that will be graced
with his talent. Those kind of young men always live up to
Just heard that Urban Meyer called Whitt and asked for a job because he was
fired..........reason---Florida lost out on a verbal commit from a HS jUNIOR!LOL LOL
A quarterback is only as good as his line. Our offensive line may average 6' 4"
and weighs 310 pounds but they run the 50 yard dash in 20 seconds. Teams like
Oklahoma, Utah and TCU will be in the backfield before our line can even stand
up. This means the super recruit will be on his back much more than he'll be in
the end zone. BYU's lack of speed will again be the downfall. If we're ok
winning 9 games a year, keep recruiting big. If we want to compete for BCS
games, we need to be faster.
Interesting development. Just curious - are there many more 4+ star LDS
prospects left for 2010, or did BYU scoop them all up today? Overall, relatively
few 2010 non-LDS prospects have committed to teams yet, so it will be
interesting to see where BYU ranks nationally when all the dust settles.
Congrats on the great day, though. Very impressive. Days like this make it
hard to defend the "talent gap" rationale for the class distinctions in the
current BCS system. What is up with all these early recruits lately?
What's next? Will NCAA coaches start roaming hospitals looking for oversized
babies? Texas is a notorious early recruiter, so it isn't suprising to see them
around the top of the rankings this early. I think Ohio State had 15-20 verbal
commitments from 4+ star 2009 recruits before kickoff last year, which is
mind-bogglingly insane! Speaking of them, any predictions who Seantrel
Henderson is leaning to(#1 overall recruit in the country)? Heard he was
seriously considering OSU. That guy is a monster.
What is with some of you guys? How can anyone see anything negative about this?
Three excellent recruits just committed to BYU. That is fantastic - period. This
Heaps kid is coming to BYU early with the goal to win the starting job as a true
freshman. Riley Nelson will give him a stiff challenge after learning the system
behind Hall this season but I expect Heaps will be just too good not to have the
job for 4 years as long as he stays healthy. He likely will not go on a mission
so there is no reason for the coaching staff not to give him every opportunity
to win the job right away. He sounds like an extremely sharp kid. The other two
kids could push for serious playing time as freshmen as well. This is a great
day. Every Cougar fan should enjoy it without finding something negative to say.
Ute fans should even enjoy it in the same way many of us Cougs honestly
appreciated your outstanding season last year. And as far as Ben
Olson - he won the starting job 3 times only to have terrible luck with
Hmmm....maybe the new turf DOES bring in good recruits.
Dude (to use your term), you must be drinking your lunch because this article
isn't even about Max Hall.And I'm sure that u - most likely a yoot
fan - mean that u hope it never happens *again* for BYU.
It was just released that Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, USC and Ohio State will
suspend their football programs. None of these teams see any point in competing
against BYU now that the Cougars have gotten verbal commitments from 3 high
school juniors. They stated, 'it is inevitable that BYU will win four straight
National Championships, we don't want to damage our reputation as football
powers competing against a team we CANNOT beat.'
7:25 said: "Max Hall just threw me an interception while I was having lunch."++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Looks like another Utah grad landed
a job with the groundskeeping crew at LES. Nice catch, dude!
HA! HA! HA! How do you feel now Riley Nelson HA! HA! HA! Maybe you can shag
balls in passing drills for the new kid HA! HA! HA! Maybe you can chart the new
kid's passing attempts during games HA! HA! HA! You can now be the guy who
barely dresses for games but slaps all the real players on the back who actually
contribute to wins-wasn't that a movie? Oh yea the movie was called "Rudy." The
team can make an inspirational video for all RMs who play for other schools but
are recruited during their mission to play for BYU-let's call the movie "Riley."
I am curious, what was it that the mission president and Bronco promised you
that made you quit on the Aggies. Was it something about being the next big time
QB from the Big School!!!! HA! HA! HA!
Max Hall just threw me an interception while I was having lunch.Dudes, it ain't gonna happen... Get real
to you utah fans that bash ben olsen, he sure kicked your trash when he went
head to head with you utes. I expect Heaps to do the same, 4 years in a row. 4-0
agaainst the utes! It's a great day to be a cougar!
This is HUGE! Welcome to Cougar Town!!! You'll love playing for BYU. You are
coming to a team that is loaded with talent and a coaching staff that are proven
winners. I hope you don't mind winning double digit games every year! The Y is
just picking up steam...ALL ABOARD!!!
Best BYU recruiting day EVER.
but if the O line cant protect him it really doesn't matter. I always hear
pregame how much the Y's O line outweighs their opponents line. That just means
the Y's O line is fat and slow.Ask Alabama about size versus speed
and their recent Sugar Bowl experience. If the O line can protect him
and the Y can continue its winning ways we will only gain more respect as a
...for BYU! 1280 The Zone interviewed all 3 of them together and they sound like
good guys, very mature sounding for 17 yr olds. When asked about going on a
mission Heaps basically said he'll have to see about that. Go for it, man, take
the Steve Young exemption! Plus they said they've circled some big names of
players that will be at BYU this Friday for junior day and they will be
"recruiting" them to join them at BYU. Bronson Kaufusi was one that Heaps
specifically mentioned. Heaps is very determined to have a great team and said
he thinks they can get a NC at BYU. I love his attitude! I sure hope it all
works out as planned!GO COUGARS!!!!
I got two degrees at BYU. I love the place. I love the atmosphere, the
mountains, the people. And when BYU lost, I was introduced to greatness at the
U. They've done some amazing things. And they've got a terrific student body.
And they're sports teams are super.I'm excited about the
possibilities at BYU. This will be fun for a lot of us Cougar fans. But that's
not going to diminish my new-found love and respect for the U. Its a heck of a
good time to see them doing great. I hope BYU raises to the U's high bar, and I
hope both these teams are BCSers for a very long time. Wouldn't that make the
economic depression easier to stomach for the coming ten or twenty years.Go Cougars. Go Utes. Its great to be an alum from the great state of
It's like Christmas Morning!!! Can't wait to see these three in Cougar Blue!!!
Man, some people need to calm down.To the Ute fans: BYU picked up 3
great recruits in one day - that in addition to the ones they already had and
the several more that are likely to commit. True, one big recruit isn't going
to change much. But, this is looking to be a good class for BYU, and lots of
good recruits definitely make it easier to win. Also, Bronco and BYU haven't
said a word about this year's recruiting class. They won't anytime in 2009.
They can't. Seems that the people making the most noise about these kids are
jealous Ute fans.To the BYU fans: Shut up about the NC talk already.
Didn't you learn anything last year?
Go watch Jake Heaps high light film before you start passing judgment on whether
or not he will be able to play college ball. He's a great quarter back and will,
without a doubt, be successful in college. There's a reason he had so many
offers from many big time schools with good football programs. Before you
and going to comment you may want to know what is actually going on.. Jake is
going to graduate early from high school (in January) to come to BYU. Congrats Jake! We're so excited to have you!
4:22,If the Utes busted the BCS then how come they aren't National
Champions? The BCS wants teams like Utah to be satisfied with 2nd rate. BYU was the best in 1984 because they had only lost once in two
consecutive seasons. Had Oklahoma not refused to play BYU they would have lost
in place of Michigan. The reason BYU doesn't have several BCS wins is exactly
like you said, because that system didn't exist. Had it existed in 1984 Oklahoma
would have forfeited a National Championship, or put their talk where their
mouth is, and BYU would have busted the BCS system for real (just like they
really busted the system of that day). That's your history lesson
for the day. Now back to the present. BYU is fielding another great team this
year, winning the recruiting for years to come, and Utah is already squaking
about last year like it's some classic history feat because you know you can't
back it up on the field this year.
These commits do nothing short of GUARANTEE a National championship to the cougs
in the next 5 years. I'm sorry Ute fans, but your 2 BCS seasons will seem rather
paltry when Bronco is hoisting a National Championship trophy, and Heaps is
accepting the Heisman trophy. We will have 1984 and 2014 National championships.
Hurts doesn't it Ute fans...it stings. Like the plunge of a knife dipped in
lemon juice. Your two measly BCS championships will wither like unplucked grapes
and will wane like the testes of a steroid abuser."Oh, Rise and shout the
cougars are out..."
Louie Sakota was a 2-star as well, and look how he ended up. It isn't where you
start so much as where you finish. I love that zoobies are already talking
about National Championships before this guy has even taken a snap for his
Senior year in H.S. A lot can happen. Players can change their mind (i.e.
Olson), commit Honor Code violations (Van Noy DUI, the entire 2003 cougar rapist
class), or even [God forbid] suffer some sort of career-ending injury.
I remember when the Utes received a Blue-Chip QB commitment
[Josh Portis] back in '04. After we lost Meyer to Florida, he
decommitted, followed Urban to the Gators, got caught in a cheating scandal,
transferred to Maryland, and never took a snap.
Bronco cant accept a recruit that had already committed to another team. He
doesnt want players that can't honor their committments. That is against his
rules and we all know that he always lives up to what he says.
BOY LAND A RECRUIT AND THE ROOSTER CROW !A Gayo de Cello,SEEMS THAT THEY THINK
THAT THEY'RE A ROOSTER BORN IN HEAVEN. We'll just wait and see how it all ALL
PLAYS OUT before the crowing really begins.
Are you for real? The bcs system did not even exist when byu beat a 7-5 michigan
team and was given the championship in 84. The UTES were the original bcs
busters and the only ones to do it twice. All the "top" recruits in the world
won't translate into the big wins you want so badly down there in happyville.
Good luck though cougs, i hope maxie takes you all the way to Vegas again!
then preaches while Whit coaches his players to BCS titles.
Good work and great news. This could be a needed talent spark to move the
program forward to the next level. Hopefully the hype plays out well on the
field. Go BYU!
while Bronco rings the recruiting bell again and again!
It does not matter how they are graded when in high school, it matters how they
play when they get back from their two year missions. Most fail miserably
to live up to the hype. Just ask Ben Olson.
Isn't Iggy's Sports Grill a bar? What's up with choosing that place for making
an announcement to play for BYU??
I don't care if you are a 1 star or a 5 star recruit. Just because you are or
were good in high school doesn't mean you will be good in college. As the same
for college to NFL. Lets wait and see how they play. Both Alex Smith and Brian
Johnson were 2 star recruits. To me the stars mean nothing until the players
prove themselves in the actual game. Congrats Cougs, but don't be too excited
until they actually sign, suit up and play well.
are ridicoulis! There are so many better players in California or Florida, Texas
than Utah. I thinks it's a hcarity case where if there is a good athlete from a
small state they give him a higher ranking. Bronson Kafusi,Chris Badger wouldn't
start at some othe better high school teams.
Good job, Jake. I hope you have an awesome career at BYU, and that being hated
and slandered by thousands of people, in red, who have never even met you will
just roll off your back. Don't mind them. Their I.Q.s are average at best.
As a Utah Countyite, let's be honest with ourselves, how can we really get all
the worked up (one way or another) about a kid that won't graduate for a year
and has at least 3 years until he plays?
Get a job.
Is Apo any good? This is what the Texas BurntOrange Recruiting newletter had to
say:Rivals Reporting Apo Decommit and Verbal to BYUApo was a
top performer at the camps. I believe that he is also Mormon which would explain
his interest in BYU. Sure hope that if we do lose him that we do lock down
Darius White!!We are still strong at WR, but Apo was sure making me not
worry about D. White looking around so much. Not sure how the Mormon kids do
with their 2 year missions and I read that Apo was going to take a mission
anyway. That has to be hard for a program and I was glad to see that UT would
offer a kid and allow him to take his mission. If anybody knows more I would
love to hear how that works. Apo was the Longhorns #1 WR commit.
That was written by Graham Watson. Just because she works for ESPN doesn't make
her an expert. It just makes her paid. She's one of the worst writers I've ever

Congratulations to UCLA or whatever PAC 10 team BYU just recruited a new
quarterback for.Every year in the off season we hear how BYU has
recruited the latest, greatest player ever and then after the season is over we
hear how it is really all about the great "experience" the team had or how the
media messed up the season by buying into the hype of how BYU was going
undefeated and winning the national championship again after drubbing a couple
of teams that end up going 2-10 for the year.
Hey folks, let's keep this in perspective. Yeah, it's nice to get some free pub
out of high profile signings. But remember, none of these guys have played a
down yet for BYU, so please keep the "next national champs" chatter down a notch
or two, okay? It's only been a few short years since y'all thought Ben Olsen
gave you a sure-fire lock on the BCS Championship, but look how that has worked
out for ya. Hmmm - let's not be counting our chicks before they hatch,
people.PS: Utah 48, BYU 24 GO UTES!!
byu just hit the jack-pot good luck to all the coug fansAs for me I hope all the tradition and winning comes back, and keeps going.go get em' Cougs
Byu has had good recruits come to their program, but that hasn't changed that
Utah still has 2 bcs game VICTORIES. Ben Olson was the #1, and look how he
turned out. I'd take an Alex Smith or Brian Johnson first. The top rated aren't
always the best. Look at the 3 and 4 star recruits that Utah and TCU thrive on.
I'll take my 2 bcs wins over byu overrhyping recruits any day. Have fun at
always falling short of your goals because you think you are better than you
With 30 plus wins the last three years, we are rockin. Now with this news, we
are really rockin.
I'm very, very happy, but not quite ecstatic. I remember Haloti Ngata's
assurances that he'd sign with BYU, right up until LOI day when he went to
Oregon. I remember when another QB was The Next Big Thing to happen in Provo,
only to have him transfer from one rudderless program to oblivion in another.
I'll wait to see these guys actually suited up and on the field
before declaring that my joy is full.
To Ute fans- the Cewgs are officially back? After one recruit? Two words- Ben
Olsen. We all know how that worked out. How many Mt. Dews have you slammed
today? In 4 years, when he is returning off his mission, will he
really want to play for the third fiddle in a non-BSC league? Unfortunately, UW
has a much better chance at a national championship than BYU, mostly due to the
whole BSC deal.
I don't live in Utah but follow both BYU and Utah. This is a great deal for BYU
and the MWC and for Utah. The more 4-5 Star recruits sign in the conference,
the better it will get future forward! I look forward to a great future.....
Now, if Heaps can avoid Canada for his mission, he may keep his commitment and
actually play there. Exciting but a LOT of time to pass yet.
3:33,Winning a National Championship at BYU would be more
prestigious than at a BCS school because of the degree of difficulty. I like
Heaps attitude and fighting spirit. Contrary to detractors, signing this kid
brought more than the #1 QB after all, so quit whining (unless you wear red,
then it's expected. Tough news for you). BYU is the only non-BCS
team to break through and win a National Championship, and it took consistently
winning, especially in consecutive years (1983 & 1984) for BYU to win the NC
title.Lesson learned: that's what it will take to really bust
through the BCS biased system and win National Championship, again. If anyone
can do it, the team with that tradition knows how and will. At least BYU
consistently puts themselves in a position to build off the hype of a previous
season. With the recruits that keep coming, that won't change. Man, it's good to
be a Cougar. Glad Heaps, Apo, & Stout agree. Welcome to Tradition, Honor, &
Spirit. No place better. Go BYU!
Apo plays for a very small school so the ranking services have him as a 3 star
since it's tough to compare his skills when he is playing inferior competition.
However, go read and Texas blogs and they'll tell you how good this kid is.
Also, doesn't the fact that Texas was after him tell you something???
First off whoever wrote the "nice work Heaps" @3:22 p.m. must be a troll. I hope
you seriously don't feel that.It is great news, which we should be
excited for, but it is still very very early. All they have given is their word
and that has already change for one of them. Also out of the 3, only Heaps has
accomplished anything in College Football (since he has proven to be a pretty
good recruiter). But in reality all they have is hype and expectations, but not
a single stat.I hope all 3 can prove your worth the hype. Best of
luck to all three of you. I will be rooting for you in the southwest corner of
the endzone, so smile for the picture when you score there. :)
I bet you got your english skills at byu. Cougs, good luck on that nc! You were
given a gift in 84 but that won't happen again.
Congrats Cougs. As always, recruiting is about hype, so let's pat the guys on
the back--it must be a huge relief for them--and remain restrained.
Re: nice work Heaps.Good Mormons go wherever they can best prepare for
their life's missions. Whether that's BYU, Stanford, or Podunk Community
College, that decision is between the individual and his Maker -- I'm not going
to criticize it. Having said that, way to go, Heaps! Let's bring another
national championship home to Provo!
ESPN QUOTE!: "BYU took one day to go from OK to having one of the better
recruiting classes in the country!"
Is Apo really a blue chip signing? He is a 3 star on scout and ranked near 60th
in the receiver position. I thought you had to be a five star commit to really
be considered a blue chip
Great players get noticed from the pros no matter where they play, just ask
Jerry Rice and many others. Look out BYU opponents! Cause we are the cougars
This is music to my ears after several disapointments over the last few years in
recruiting. This could be a recruiting class to remember. To also get the kid
from Texas and California that is exciting for Cougar fans.
Dick was correct??? Manti Teo is coming to BYU afterall???
Good for the MWC.
Take that--the Cougars are officially back!!
I must say...congrats! I've looked online at his highlight video. Terriffic arm
and athleticism. The kid de-committing from Texas to BYU? I just
experienced the "un-expected" Heaps said. Look forward to his first
game against Utah whether it is at Rice Eccles or Lavell Edwards Stadium.ALERT TOM HOLMOE, I would not schedule Univ of Washington anytime soon,
within the next 4-8 years (depending on mission, red shirt, etc)
Heaps chances of winning a NC with BYU is hire than it is with Washingtons
program. Besides if the kids are good enough and they get enough of them, then
they bring the National Champion title to them selves. But its not all about a
National Champion ship. If thats all Heaps was after he could have accepted
This is a very exciting announcement. It will be great for both the boys and the
football program. Go Cougs!!!
The impact of this kid signing has already played out with 2 blue chippers
signing on with him. Apo decommits from Texas? Wow - this Heaps kid is pretty
persuasive. And Stout is the #5 Middle Linebacker in the Nation. Looks like
the Cougs defense got a much needed boost as well.
Weird thing is, if they want to win a national championship why did they go to
BYU. If they want a good education or a good experience then BYU is a good
choice. I am not a BYU hater like a lot of you but there is not a chance any of
them are going to win a championship at BYU.
How great is this for state football? Lets hope the Utes and Cougars both
maintain their winning ways. The games are so much more exciting when both teams
have legitimate BCS aspirations.Go Cougars!
This is a good day for BYU faithful. This is good for the state of Utah and the
MWC at large.
Best of luck and lets hope that everyone can be respectful when discussing a 17
yr olds life decision.
It is because he is a Mormon. Good mormons go to BYU.
It's very good for Cougars.
Dick Harmon was correct sir.
The old christmas red is now blue.
