I will believe the hype and the talent when I see it on a COLLEGE football field.

How do they perform when other good players from around the nation/MWC are defending or running over them.

    We shall see.

I'll give you credit for your 2 BCS wins, but your "8-0" Bowl record is a joke.

Not as much of a joke as Quest for Perfection ending with a thump by a 10-2 BYU team losing to Pac-10 7-5 UofA.

I'll take 6-5 Utah team's win over 7-4 SEC Georgia Teach team any day compared to 10-2 teams lose.

Funny how Georgia in 2007 Sugar Bowl smacked Hawaii all across the field yet no one CRIED about lack of motivation in playing Hawaii. Bama could have declined the SB invitation and let a team like Texas Tech play instead of getting embarrassed by the Utes.

    If Utah has been so great | 9:42 a.m. June 9, 2009

Yes those years Utah stunk yet we were 1-2 against BYU and we all know how BYU dominated in those two wins. Those years Utah was in transition and in 2008 it all payed off.

BYU again beat-up a weak conference (aka 84). Correct me if I am wrong but in 2008 there were 3 ranked teams with 2 in the top 10 from the MWC compared to 0 (besides BYU) and 0 in the top 10 when BYU was winning conference championships.

What makes you think BYU's defense that allowed 6 teams to score at will on it will go undefeated this year.

Please go ahead and start making "Quest for Perfection II" T-shirts so that we the Utes can have something else to laugh at end of this year besides the annual beat down at the Vegas Bowl by a weak Pac-10 team.

"Their are 200 + comments about BYU football and there are about 20 on a related ewe article...Comments by ewe fans on Y articles only reinforce who program is dominate in the state!"

WOW!!! BYU football is a better program in this era because it generates more comments on Deseret News articles. Hear the rest of us thought it was about winning games and for non-BCS teams to at least break into to the big games.

The reason BYU generates so much comments is that it makes obnoxious Quest for Perfection predictions when in reality they haven't beaten ONE ranked team (TCU) in 10 years. Heaps is talking about a National Championship as though these 3 players what is missing from a title when in fact it was TCU, Utah, and UofA put a smack down on the helpless Cougar D. In fact so did UNLV, CSU, and Washington. Talk about titles when in your good years your not playing in the Vegas bowl.

"Who gets shut out by UNLV?! BYU has never gotten shut out by UNLV!"

Yep, UNLV shut us out 2 yrs ago. It was our 2nd loss to them since 1979. But did you know...

    (1) the tdS has been beaten by the Rebels twice this decade alone, and have lost more football games to them in their history than Utah?

    (2) the tdS has NEVER shut out the Utes? If memory serves me, the Utes have shut out the tdS 15 times!

    (3) the tdS has only ONE undefeated season in their history? And that it came against the 4th easiest schedule in Div. 1-A that year? The Utes have gone undefeated SEVEN times in OUR history.

You REALLY want to know what happened to us with our losses to UNLV, New Mexico, and Wyoming? We lost, regrouped, learned from our mistakes, and went undefeated in 2008. What happened to the tdS with their back-to-back 11-2 seasons? 2008 was supposed to be THE year. And you flopped! No BCS for you. You couldn't even beat the 5th place last-PAC10-team-to-qualify-for-a-bowl-game team.

    Ha ha ha!

    GO UTES!!!

Over the past 5 years, 2 of the 5 have been great, the other 3?? Losses to Wyoming, UNLV, New Mexico, etc.

Who gets shut out by UNLV?! BYU has never gotten shut out by UNLV! Also, remember the trip to Laramie in 2006 utes?! What happened there?! And what happened at home against Air Force in 2007?

Yewts have not proven a dynasty yet. Don't even start.

Never say never. And don't call us "tdS." tds was a stupid phrase coined by Urban Meyer who has no respect for anyone not even the Utes. Utah was a "stepping stone" to his career at Florida. Ideally he wants to coach at Notre Dame. The once classy Kyle Whittingham smug personality is so saturated in Urban Meyer's arrogance it is not even funny, as are many of the fans and players. It's like having to listen to a bunch of oscar meyer weiners. Meyer left his stench on Utah bad, and it shows. Ron McBride was a classy coach in contrast to Meyer, and he had a bit of a mouth himself.

If Utah's fans, players, and coaches were like Elder Wirthlin was, it would be far easier to respect Utah, but they are completely opposite.

  • Hi Dave from Zoobieville
    June 8, 2009 3:07 p.m.

If I pick the winning lottery numbers, I'll be a millionaire.

What is all this "if" going on about the tdS going undefeated vs. opponents like Oklahoma, Florida St, Utah, and TCU? It's not gonna happen. The tdS will NOT go undefeated, nor play in the NC next season. They'll go bowling, but not in the BCS. The schedule is DEFINITELY BCS worthy, but the team and coaching staff are not.

But I think you'll be able to take Tulane.

Of course I said that about Arizona too. What an embarrassment!

After all is said and done. . . and a lot has been said here. . .

One: This young man goes to high school with my youngest daughter. She is a very good judge of character. She said he is the real thing and a top notch leader. He's isn't a pushy leader either; he walks in and everyone just looks up to him. I guess it's charisma.

Second: BYU winning a national championship. . . several have said here it can't happen. Let me tell you right now, that if BYU goes undefeated this year, with Oklahoma, Florida State, Utah, TCU, (and at Tulane) then they WILL be considered for the national championship. Utah had a pretty good schedule last year; but nothing like what BYU will face this year.

"Any doubt whether BYU or Washington deserved the 1984 National Title was answered with a convincing BYU 38-3 win. Case closed!"

Poor, sad, illogical, stat cherry-picking zoob. Everyone knows that with graduation and injuries, teams can vary from year to year. That 11-1 Orange Bowl Champion '84 Husky squad was a different team than the 7-5 '85 Husky team, who suffered home losses to 3-8 Oregon St. and 4-7 Washington St.

Seriously Ms. Bobkins, how did beating a mediocre Washington team validate 1984? Was your '84 championship trophy subsequently INVALIDATED by providing '85 UTEP it's ONLY WIN OF THE SEASON? If teams were as good the following year as they were the previous year, why didn't the tdS go undefeated in '85? Bosco was a Senior. Shouldn't they have been better than they were in '84? Could it be that the '84 team didn't face any teams with 9 wins? You BARELY handled a 6-5 Big 10 team. When faced with 9-win UCLA or Ohio St, you folded like a lawn chair. How would have fared vs. an 11-1 '84 Washington team?

    You would've LOST!

Realistically, it's a matter of how many national championships Heaps will win at BYU.

Trust me, Heaps will not merely bust the BCS, he will blow it off the map.

BYU is already among the premier programs in the nation and with Jake Heaps on board we will be nationally recognized as THE PREMIER college football program.

Also, their optimism is contagous! Other great tallent may be looking for a school to play and will join the Cougar band waqgon! Regarding the BCS championship it is not a fair system for all schools. It was designed by the "big name" schools so they can dominate. Everyone knows that Utah should have ended #1 last season, yethey were denyed by the BCS good old boys club. I am all for better BYU and Utah sports teams. It makes for a better season, it's better for both schools and the Mountain West Conference. Besides, I have heard that ifthere is to be a national college footabll play off, the Pac 10 will need to expand to the Pac 12 like the other "big" leagues. Wouldn't it seem natural for BYU and Utah to join their "old" brotheren Arizona and Arizona State in the new Pac 12? If that were food for thought,I would call that a "Christmas" feast!!! The BYU defense has taken a lot of heat for being subpar. All the haters love to define BYU D based on 2008, as if the great defenses from 2007 and 2006 never existed.
While those D was leading BYU to its annual Vegas Bowl Utah defences were leading them to BCS wins.

The fact remains BYU's slow defense won't be able to compete with the athletic Utah and TCU defenses.

The BYU defense has taken a lot of heat for being subpar. All the haters love to define BYU D based on 2008, as if the great defenses from 2007 and 2006 never existed. The defense has recruited well and even the current defense will be decent. 10 out of 11 spots will be better this year; the only dropoff I see at all will be losing David Nixon at Weakside Linebacker. Let me enlighten you.

Safety- This year we have Scott Johnson there who was our best DB at corner, a harder position. JC All American Andrew Rich has the other spot.

Corner- Brandon Bradley will start and he has better speed at boundary corner than we've had since '06. Lee Aguirre or Brian Logan are excellent JC candidates for the other spot.

MLB- Matt Bauman was the leading tackler last year. Shawn Doman has made great plays. Terrance Hooks is back, better than Bauman.

OLB- Jordan Pendleton is new but has size and great speed as a converted safety for the position. Coleby Clawson knocks people's heads off.

DE- Jan Jorgensen, need I say more? Denney isn't too bad either.

    NT- Wolfley, Fuga. Looks Great.

  • 5 Add'l Predictions
    June 6, 2009 3:38 p.m.

    6. One of those 3 blue-chip recruits never suits up for the cougars due to some Honor Code violation.

    7. Zoobs will predict to stay close with Oklahoma all throughout the offseason, then blame the refs when they get blown out.

    8. Zoobs will not admit to getting "blown out" by Oklahoma, but would call the score "close" in their "narrow" 48-24 defeat to the '08 Utes.

    9. The tdS will win EVERY off-season Nat'l Championship for the next 6 yrs.

    10. Jake Heaps will opt not to serve a mission; this decision will only be criticized if for any reason he leaves the "why?"

  • 5 Simple Predictions
    June 6, 2009 8:59 a.m.

    1. Heaps will arrive early on campus in January 2010 and will win the starting job as a true freshman.

    2. Nelson will be a solid backup. Every team needs two reliable QBs and these two will play well together and push each other.

    3. Lark will transfer before he gets home ala Nelson. But he will head north to Nelson's old home in Logan. Munns skills don't fit the spread.

    4. Ben Olson will be on an NFL roster at the start of the season - even if only a practice squad. Within two years he will be a starter. Hopefully some of the Cougs who love to bash him will have done some repenting. No one other than Luke Staley has had worse luck with injuries and yet been so talented.

    5. The hype over these recruits will die down as we start to prepare for the 09' season. We will be in the game against Oklahoma going into the 4th but lose by 10. We run the table until losing by a field goal to TCU. We beat Oregon State in the Vegas bowl by 10 and end up 11-2 and top 15.

"...stuck at a university that will be on probation for the illegal recruitment of Riley Nelson while he was on his mission. Once USU files suit, and they will, Provo will be in a HEAP of mess as they will lose scholarships and post season play."

Actually, when a kid leaves on a mission, he can leave whatever school he is at, and transfer to another one, without penalty to the school or the kid. Because it is seen as a "Leave of absence from football", then it is perfectly legal for a kid or a University to recruit football players while they are on their missions.

You must not be a lawyer, are you? How do you think Ben Olsen ended up at UCLA after his mission? He was recruited by Carl Dorrell, the head football coach at UCLA, while Olsen was on his mission in Canada!

The ironic thing is that although you claim to not care about BYU, you are still posting here. Understand? If you weren't a fan, you wouldn't post. I don't care about hockey and, oh, let's just say the LA Kings. You see? I don't go to the LA times and talk smack about LA Kings because I don't care about them or the sport that much.

You CARE about BYU. It is important to you. You care so much that you post your opinions to stories you shouldn't even bother reading.

You can try to deny it. You can pretend that you don't. But you care with a scary intensity. It almost seems as if you hate BYU more than you like the U or USU or whatever. Why do you define yourself by what you are not?

-I would take Lloyd or Hart ahead of Heaps. You crazy you ask? Heaps has topped out and won't improve much as many experts have eluded to. Lloyd and Hart are studs, and Lloyd especially is bigger, faster and stronger w/a ton more upside in future. But I guess he made his decision.

-why isn't anyone giving Heaps garbage for not going on a mission? I thought it was Faith, Family, etc. first. but none of the fans care now. Talk about a double standard. Havili to USC and wont serve, then they are looked down upon. So what is it?

-I am a BYU season ticket holder. But until we can dominate Utah-we haven't done anything.

-Would hate to be Larks and Munns after so much was promised them and now Nelson and Heaps are a part of the equation. Someone will transfer...

    -There are many QB's who would have Heaps numbers in that throwing system; with 4 all american wide receivers; and a line that gives you all day to throw. 3A competition;

Im still smiling from ear to ear since hearing about the three blue chip recruits that committed to BYU. This is huge for BYU and even though these guys may not contribute on the field for few more years, it is huge for the future of BYU football. Getting a guy like Jake Heaps, the number 1 rated qb in the nation and he picked BYU over 25 other schools. Now Heaps, Stout and Apo all can become recriuts for byu and hopefully bring alot of their teammates and buddies, who are big time players. As a BYU fan, this has to be one of the most exciting times for me, it ranks right up there with the 1984 national championship. Just proof that you might be able to pay for an education but it doesn't mean you'll get one. Recruiting Nelson while on his mission was a violation of NCAA rules? Where exactly is that one written? Oh, you pulled it out of thin air? Nice job! And even if the Cougar coaching staff had initiated contact with Nelson while he was on his mission (which has been proven false anyway since it was Nelson's family and his high school coach that contacted BYU first) it's in no way a violation of anything. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's in the LDS Missionary Clause of the NCAA Rules and Regulations. Yeah, I missed that one! LOL!

And he's already pitched something like 30 innings in the bigs since last year.

  • Sj Bobkins
    June 5, 2009 8:52 p.m.

Does BYU keep the MWC afloat financially?
It certainly does in football. From The Sporting News and the NCAA come these attendance figures:

BCS conferences finished in the following order: Big Ten (70,514), Big 12 (61,993), Pac-10 (56,632), ACC (52,806), and the Big East (42,994). The Mountain West Conference's average home attendance was just 30,166.
It looks like the Mountain West Conference has a way to go before it reaches the status of the BCS conferences. Without BYU (64,102) its average attendance would have been about 25,000 per game. Of key interest, when BYU plays on the road, there is a 40% increase in attendance, due to every BYU game being the "Super Bowl" playing the team you most want to beat and those pesky BYU fans that travel everywhere. Doing the subtraction. If BYU home games were not counted in the conference standings the average for a MWC football game would be 25,000, Take out the BYU effect on road games, and MWC attendance would be 18,700 per conference game, LAST in Div 1-A.

He is doing the same thing as every other kid given a choice between baseball, basketball and football. Remember *Danny Ainge skipped his draft year to continue playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. The following year he was a SECOND round draft choice of the Celtics having tired of trying to hit the curve ball. Baseball takes less out of your body. The last time BYU played at Notre Dame, Jeff S. was the difference, No body could cover him. It wasn't just his 6'6" frame but the speed he had in running the post,

Just like Ben Olsen, but don't talk trash on these 3 kids and all the cougar fans that are way excited about this because even though some of my fellow cougar fan comments are making them sound like complete idiots we all know that everyone on this blog would be writing the same stuff if their school scored these kids. • poor Nelson
    June 5, 2009 7:32 p.m.

I never invited Riley Nelson to BYU. I don't even know who did. I never thought it was the right place for him, in my opinion. If BYU wanted to recruit him, they should have done it during his high school career. I have nothing against the kid, he sounds like a great person, but I never thought he should have come. The idea should have never even been concocted.

Honestly, Heaps, Lark, and Munns are all much better suited for BYU's Pro-Style offense. Nelson would have been better suited for a dual threat system, even like with Utah. So I'm really not sure what will happen.

A possible scenario/solution could be that Heaps redshirts and serves a mission, and gives time for Lark/Munns/Nelson to compete for the starting job. By the time he gets to his first year of eligibility they will all have put in their time and left. Then Heaps can continue to serve the program for more of the forseeable future.

I don't know. I'm no expert. Hopefully it all goes well.

The Las Vegas Bowl gets first pick of Mountain West teams, which means they may still pick BYU, even if Utah or anybody else, wins the conference. If they were taking the champion, I would hope we went there every year!

They just have to get a better opponent (Even though BYU hasn't exactly helped the situation the last two years. They needed a miracle to beat a bad UCLA team that had to start a WR @ QB. Last year was a complete debacle!) I would like to see our champion go to the Poinsettia Bowl.

Drop by your local Borders and thumb through the college rankings in the Princeton and US News guides. BYU is a national university, yeetaw is a regional university. BYU's business programs are rated highly, the law school is is the 30's yeetaw's is 40 spaces lower. Now about the "research university". I was the sports editor of the Ariz State Univ "State Press" when the Arizona schools joined the PAC-8. 10 years later the PAC-10 decided to expand inviting Colorado and Texas. Neither school showed interest, offer closed. In the mid 80's BYU was doing very well knocking off powers like Texas, Texas A and M, etc. Sports Illustrated did a story on realignment in college football moving BYU to the PAC. Stanfords president stated BYU was not a research university and wouldnt fit. What he meant was that BYU is private and LDS. That was the one and only time the term was used yet yutz fans assume they would be wanted by the PAC incorrectly. Utah and the PAC have never been mentioned together. In BYU you get the whole market with just one team.

Apparently you don't read Newsweek, Time, etc about some of the programs at BYU. Maybe the reading is above your reading skills. Not only is their management program among the very best, their animation at the tops, their engineering program is excellent, they have one of the highest ratings in the nation turning research and projects into acutal production and corporations keep coming to find out how.

As a school administrator I didn't find any difference between the graduates of Stanford, Yale, Harvard, UCLA or BYU when it came to teaching skills and the ability to think. Now, Berkley graduates, that was scary.

Not every school needs to have a medical school to be called a top school. Schools which have the publish or perish rule don't always have the best professors. I have been in presentation by top researchers and they are among the most boring presenters in the world. I would hate to be in one of their classes.

To All The Ben Olson Bashers - Get A Life! I recently had the opportunity to work out with Ben Olsen at a Utah HS. His life is not what he imagined it would be when he was 18 and I doubt any of yours is either. He went to UCLA due to the lack of communication from the "new" coaching staff at BYU. It is apparant BYU has learned a lesson from that experience as they have been all over Jake since the 9th grade. As for Ben, the UCLA offense allowed him to be hit so much, he could not get better. Having been around QBs since my days at SDSU in the mid-80s (Go Tooty Santos), I have NEVER seen a more beautiful release than what I saw a few weeks ago. Ben - Andy and the Eagles love you and the fire in you. All you Zoobie's - life does exist outside of Utah County, you may want to try it sometime.

I would rather coach Ben Olsen than Alex Smith. Read the 49er pages at the San Jose Mercury and discover what a malcontent, babied, millionaire, ner-do'well he turned out to be. He was a great system QB, just as Brian Johnson was. Had Olsen not left because Lance Reynolds didn't get the BYU head job, he could have been a quality kid too. Instead he played under center at UCLA rather than in the shotgun at BYU, and his body suffered for it.
When you do your "factual" comparisons of BYU vs yutz, (why there is a need I don't know can't we all just be happy?) Consider BYU's top team GPA in Div 1-A, Davey O'Brien , Outland, Heisman, trophy winners, All-Americans and HOF winners, 3 times the top 10 finishes as the yutz, along with the only non-BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Now let's talk!

  • SJ Bobkins
    June 5, 2009 2:40 p.m.

The forerunner of the BCS did exist in 1996 when the team with the best record in college football played at the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day beating the favored Kansas State Wildcats. If one has to go back to 1984 in a jealous attempt to discount BYU's National Championship you need to consider two facts. The Washington team that beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, and finished second to BYU, had a very tough bowl opponent, BYU was not allowed to pick their opponent or their bowl. They took on the schedule and never lost. When the 1985 schedule opened up Washington on the basis of their #2 standing was a heavy favorite to win the National Championship. They had everyone back with a great infusion of new talent to begin play. Any doubt whether BYU or Washington deserved the 1984 National Title was answered with a convincing BYU 38-3 win. Case closed! BTW-That Michigan team lost 6 starters on offense during the season, all six were back for the bowl game. They were not the 5 loss team, but the top 5 team that entered the season.

  • Bring on the BCS

BYU has never had a WR like Ross Apo. Tall, fast, athletic he reminds me of the outstanding Notre Dame receivers from a few years ago who were uncoverable. In the rare chance that Brady Quinn could toss a decent ball to them especially Jeff Sammilich, (sp?) it was a quick 6. We have great route runners, disciplined, rarely dropping a ball, not the complete package. BYU's defense is build on the speed of the outside linebackers and the strength of the inside guys. 2010 class may be best know for the incoming linebackers headed up by 5th in the country Stout.
I am amazed that any positive news on BYU gets a greater pouring out of nasty yutz fan putdowns, than BYU fans wishing to vent their excitement. There has to be a mental diagnosis that covers that behavior. Apathy not jealousy is the opposite of love, Our yutz friends have a secret love for the Cougars. I have never commented on any yutz story, but I applaud when they are successful, just as I enjoy BYU's great success. I don't feel threatened, insecure, nor need to rain on the yutz parade

These young men sound like fine athletes, but as a Ute, Im not too worried about it. This Heaps kid reminds me of another highly touted #1-ranked QB; and Im not even referring to Ben Olson. Try Jimmy Clausen.

Compare these 2 prep stars [as in prior to enrolling at Notre Dame]:

    JC: 63 200-lbs 4.7-40yd
    JH: 62 195-lbs 4.8-40yd

The real difference between these two players is that Clausen signed with a class with 13 Blue-Chips (4 and 5 star recruits), and into program that actually had a REAL winning tradition and national cache. And a CBS contract.

And hows that worked out for them? By barely escaping the Aztecs on their home field. And the Utes STILL brought home the Sugar Bowl hardware.

Here's a kid that set the all time passing yardage record for the state of Utah and many other records in this state and I guarantee you that this signing of Heaps will put an end to Rileys career if he stays at the "Wonderful Ones" school. Merely because of the publicity Heaps has got! If I were Nelson I would be opting out real soon and taking the year penalty or whatever, because it's his career that is being flushed by the almighty ones. Just like the politics in this state lies, lies lies and power, power, power. As for USU going 2-9 the next year or thereafter you can forget that, because we now have a coach and staff in place that will get the right kids and compete!

What do you suppose Bronco told poor Mr. Nelson about his playing prospects when he returns from his mission?

  • The Truth
    June 5, 2009 11:40 a.m.

Utah is still tne best Non-BCS school out there. Why don't you start dominating your non conference opponents? Then that will actually be considered debatable. BYU cannot win on a national level. They are scared to win on a national level. They don't work hard enough to win on a national level. When they accept their role as the underdogs and not the eilitists they will win some big games. Until that time they will fall short of expectations and make it to the vegas bowl every year if they are lucky while Brighams Young's Real University, that he was actually alive to found, will accept the underdog role and destroy the competition.

Then it had to be you guys that won the fiesta bowl right?
well you won the vegas bowl at least right?
See, we utah fans just like to remind you of your place right now.
Sure you had your glory years (some time ago) but its the time of the ute... maybe with these recruits you can do something great, but a certain ben olsen comes to mind.

You can have all the talent in the world but when the U of U defense is staring you down and making you think extra fast that #1 HS QB rating means nothing. It doesn't matter how good your arm is if you throw it to the other team right Max? I heard the same things about Max that I am hearing about Jake great in High School.........good Then they get to BYU know the rest.

why does everyone at byu think they're winning a championship when he hasn't even enrolled let alone taken a snap? a good qb isn't the only key to a bcs team. it takes a good Defense, something BYU CLEARLY lacks. You already have a good QB and you still haven't even gone 11-1, clearly it takes more than a good qb/wr.

Research - like cold fusion. The lase overall school rankings (academic) had BYU in the 70's and Utah in the 140's.

This article was about 3 recruits to BYU, and all I read is "well, Utah has 2 BCS..." Wow, sour grapes.

  • Ute Fans Are Pathetic
    June 5, 2009 10:35 a.m.

The inferiority complex is astounding. With two BCS bowl victories Ute fans should be less annoying not more, but rather than be happy that BYU landed some great recruits which will ensure that the rivalry is exciting for years to come, they have to try to make themselves sound important or disrespect BYU. My favorite little brother comments are: 1) "Utah has two BCS bowl victories with two star recruits," as if every team doesn't have two star walk-on players - especially kickers - that contribute significantly; and 2) "Of course they chose BYU because they're mormon" which is supposed to imply that either the players were somehow forced into it by their parents or that blue chip Mormon recruits will just fall into BYU's lap. Both comments are just reverse snobbery. Utes have to try to feel superior to BYU somehow. Both BYU and Utah get a lot of mormon recruits they wouldn't otherwise get because they're in Utah and lead by Mormon coaching staffs. Next time Utah lands a big mormon recruit I'm going to post "of course they went to Utah, they're mormon and so their parents probably forced them."

Check the ratings, BYU and Utah are both on par for law schools. Utah is superior in terms of research, medicine, engineering etc. BYU is not a research University, and besides a great Business School and a good law school, it is largely known as an undergraduate school. It's why the PAC 10 has already said BYU won't get in, but Utah actually could. BYU takes the cake with the Business School and a few other things. Both are great schools, just different strengths. I prefer Utah for the diversity and because it is not in Utah County (I graduated from both) as well as the non-dillusional sports fans. I respect BYU as an undergraduate academic institution and for their MBA and JD programs, but other than that Utah takes home the prize. I may have made some errors in typing this...please refrain from discrediting my argument because of those. Thanks.

In light of this news it is more apparent than ever that Riley made the biggest mistake of his life transferring to BYU he probably will never take a snap at BYU unless their first team gets pulled.

If you're a football player you want to play football, what good will sitting on the bench and playing a 2nd or 3rd string QB your whole college career do for him? Nadda. Zilch. Zero. USU could have offered him a starting position his whole college career giving him more exposure to the game.

Football is a game...not life. Yet you seem to take great pleasure in bashing the opposite party. BYU = Good environment but mediocre school???? I don't know what planet you're living on. Ever hear of the Marriott School of Management, one of the best in the country, consistently on par with the Ivy League schools? Ever read that Princeton Review? BYU's library was #1 in the country three years ago and is still near the top, right next to Yale and Harvard. How about animation? BYU's program is the best in the country and has special partnerships with big name companies. How about gov't jobs? BYU is a major feeder for the CIA, FBI, and NSA. You are truly delusional in calling BYU a mediocre school, when it is one of the best in the country, and rated the #1 best bang for your buck as well.

Cougar football is starting another dynasty. The cougs can realistically pull of 10 wins this year, maybe 11 if it can turn the tables in the MWC. Add star recruits the next coupla years, and it's a great time to be a cougar fan. And to the Aggie fans, suck it up. You lost Nelson and will lose on the field again this year.

continue to be dominated by utah and tcu - BYU has gone undefeated in conference two of the last three seasons - Utah better follow up last season with one like it before they talk anything like "continue to dominate". That in fact would give Utah a chance at playing for a national championship, if they could muster up a consistent effort this year. So from what I hear you are predicting that?

    June 5, 2009 8:49 a.m.

Let's hope that BYU, Utah, TCU and the others in the MWC continue to raise their profile. What makes a power conference is at least 3 dominant teams.

I enjoyed watching Utah thrash Alabama and go undefeated. Go Utes!

Respect for the conference will come by continually winning on the field.

  • Missions
    June 5, 2009 8:48 a.m.

Apo and Heaps WILL NOT serve missions. They are enrolling early with the intent to start as true freshmen and there is no reason to think they won't. But for any of you worried about them not taking missions - Mendenhall will have them on a fireside circuit that will have them wishing they were on an actual mission. These kids will NOT lack for missionary opportunities if they become one of the best QB-WR combos at the Y. On paper there is no reason to think they won't.

Hopefully your kids have learned to look a little beyond what is in someone's ears to discern what kind of person they are.

  • Schedule is Key
    June 5, 2009 8:20 a.m.

Many schools have the talent to go undefeated. In 2004 and 2008 Utah had schedules that worked. Had Utah and BYU reversed those schedules in those years, and played the other guys schedule, Utah would not have gone undefeated. They would not have beaten USC on the road in 2004 and they would have not beaten TCU last year had the game been played in Texas. These recruits are great, one will most likely not play for BYU. That's just the way it is. Let the kids have their day in the sun and then sit back and let the schedule makers do their things. Their is a coach in East Salt saying wow, I glad I didn't get that schedule this year. We sure could use the Oklahoma money though. There is a coach down South in Provo saying we need the money but look at the schedule I have to play. Could I play my rivals schedule this coming season. Would have like to have played it last year also.

  • Congratulations BYU...

  • Good
    June 5, 2009 8:03 a.m.

Congratulations BYU. I think BYU fans need to temper their enthusiasm a bit. Many players like this roll into the big programs every year. Some pan out, some don't. The fact that this is such a big deal is an indication of BYU's (and Utah's) status of on-the-outside-looking-in when it comes to college football.

Utah has proven that it can put together an amazing team every four years or so. The lack of 10 recruits year in and year out like the ones recently landed by BYU makes it tough to compete at the level of the BCS every year.

Hopefully Utah will keep doing what its doing and BYU will bring some respect to the MWC by busting the BCS.

Just wanted you to know that I chose Utah over BYU because they have a great medical school. Does BYU have a medical school. Nursing doesn't count. My 3.9 GPA would have been good anywhere. I chose Utah because it simply offers more than history. My younger brother chose to attend Utah Law School simply because it's better. Utah is a research instiitution. Their graduate programs are superior to anything BYU has to offer. BYU is good due to it's environment. They can pick and choose who they want due to the environment.

My parents attended BYU and I was raised into thinking it was better. Great environment, mediocre school.

"BYU has been known for having a great defense, and I think Zac will add to that." Haha, BYU has never had a "great" defense...not in the last 10 years atleast. These players sound like just another dillusional piece of the program. They are excited, but they haven't even graduated high school yet and they are talking like celebrities already. Thing is, all 3 of them will (well, SHOULD) be serving missions soon (if they truly honor BYU's tradition like they say they do) and it won't really be until 2013 that we see if they even have stuff. Congrats to the kids though, they are obviously excited. Maybe BYU will be on the national stage in 5 years....we'll see.

  • Rest of the QBs?
    June 5, 2009 7:47 a.m.

Obviously there are no guarantees but Heaps seems to have everything needed to be a very successful BYU QB - as a true freshman. He is very accurate, extremely quick release, is a John Beck-like workaholic, and has Jim McMahon's confidence. And he helped bring in potentially one of the most skilled receivers we have ever had in Apo. It will be interesting to see what two extremely talented kids can do when they enroll early and will not interrupt their physical development for two years to serve a mission. If they stay healthy there is no reason they won't own the BYU record books.

What about the other QBs? Riley Nelson is a good gritty player and will have the benefit of a full year in the system. Both Lark and Munns will return in time to be in the 2010 competition too. All three were highly rated QBs but none were the number one QB recruit in the nation. I predict, particularly because he is enrolling early, Heaps will be our starter as a true freshman in 2010, Nelson 2nd string, Munns 3rd and Lark transfers before he comes home - to Utah State or Weber.

I am posting now at 10:00 am in Germany, but it will list at 1 am in Utah.

Funny and some very stupid comments, and some very mean spirited comments.

I like the kids attitude. I would be worried if he came in and said he hopes they might win the MWC championship and then perhaps a NC. You set your goals high and then shoot towards them.

As far as the slams on BYU's quest. I believe it says in Matthew 5:48 and # Nephi 12:48 that we should be perfect. SO if it is good enough for our Lord to seek perfection I guess it is good enough for his Church's University to expect that.

Congrats to the Utes on their two great two BCS wins, but it was COngress who set that in motion, not the Utes. Congress starting talking about the unfairness of the BCS system, so the BCS changed it to allow non BCS conferences to have an outside chance.

Suggestion for a national championship. Have a BCS champion and a non BCS champion and have the two play each other the next week for the national championship.

  • O-line
    June 5, 2009 12:59 a.m.

EVERY position is getting better recruited at the Y. BYU has been recruiting several top 30 to top 10 Offensive lineman the past few years. Which tells you their not only big fat guys, but they are strong, mobile athletes who have good size and will protect well. With O-lineman it's not all about how fast you can run a forty, it's how quick you pull and curl and how well you sustain your blocks. The O-line recruits wouldn't be that highly ranked if I didn't do that well. And I will say without hesitation BYU has some of the best O-lineman in the country, at least the best of non-BCS teams.

As far as complaining about defense, every position on defense is also getting better. People keep defining BYU's defense based on 2008 and it's really annoying. Our defense was DOMINANT in 2007 and 2008, and that was with crappy DB's. We're getting better DB's, better LB's and solid DE's and DT's, with more team speed. Skill players on offense are also gaining speed.

So Go Cougars! we're on the way up.

    June 5, 2009 12:22 a.m.

You're are correct. TV does provide the proof.

You really believe that if the BYU audience was as large as you believe, the networks would let the MTN. stand in the way of leveraging that audience for economic gain?

The MTN. with its limited coverage is the best deal BYU has available.

If the national BYU following was as large a you contend, the networks and BYU would find a way to leverage that audience. As it is, the networks are happy to let BYU languish on the MTN.

The BYU following is just not significant enough to draw the attention of the national networks.

The truth is in the history of the MWC Utah has had more truely national (not regional) coverage than BYU.

  • Confession of a Utah graduate
    June 5, 2009 12:16 a.m.

I graduated from the University of Utah. I thought it was OK. But I really had my heart set on going to BYU, but my 3.4 GPA wasn't good enough for the Y., even though it did earn me a scholarship at the U. So Woo-Hoo. Thank you Eccles family for that. I really like many, not most ... well, maybe most ... of my classmates at the U. had, like I had, picked Utah as their safety school. The school they wanted to get into had turned them down, so they had to go to the U. No, that school wasn't universally BYU, although that was true of many of my classmates. Some had wanted to go to Arizona State or Stanford or the Air Force. One guy had even wanted to go to Colorado State, but he too had to settle for the U.

In truth, that's what we are ... a combination commuter school and safety school.

Honestly, the only thing that irks me more than the typical drunken Ute fan obnoxiously horning in with ignorant comments on what is obviously a great day for BYU (my apologies to the Ute fans who were actually civil and congratulatory -- thank you!), is the also typical stone-cold sober yet somehow even more obnoxious Cougar fan who makes absolutely asinine comments about the Utes. Even though I bleed blue, I was proud to be a Utahn when the Utes beat the tar out of the mighty Tide this year -- and I was born and raised in California. Delivering pizzas is an honorable profession. I have been proud to represent Papa John's on many a doorstep over the years. That I graduated from the U. has nothing to do with my current profession. It's that I majored in philosophy. As such, I would've been delivering pizzas even if I had graduated from the Y. Somewhere, someone will say, "Well, yes, if only you had done better in school, you could have ... blah, blah, blah, ... gotten into BYU." Well, look. I may not have chosen the U., but it chose me. And I chose Kant. And now people are choosing pepperoni-and-olives with a side of jalapeno, and I'm trying to figure out what such an order means. For real.

BYU's national following is evident in the fact that BYU has always been the only team in the MWC (previously WAC)to consistently get placed on national TV broadcasts. If not for the mtn, national distribution of BYU games would continue. Sorry Ute fans, the ratings for the Cougars always exceed their neighbors in Salt Lake.

BYU has a national following and Utah never will. The truth is that Utah has been a great team for the past 10 years but they still have a small following except for the Salt Lake valley. BYU has a large national following, and established program, superbowl qbs, a legendary coach, great facilities, quality wins, etc. BYU is constantly attacked for two reasons: one, they are the premiere team in the MWC, and second, they are owned by the church.

  • To "Go Cougs"
    June 4, 2009 9:42 p.m.

After the 2004 season, BYU fans were saying the about the Utes recruiting class:

"Doesn't look like the BCS win has done much for the Utes recruiting yet."

And yet 4 years later, the Utes found themselves back on top. We win BCS games by developing athletic 3-star recruits. We get a few big-time flashy recruits each year, but mostly it's the 3-star guys that we thrive on. Can't argue with the results.

  • Go Cougs
    June 4, 2009 9:07 p.m.

For all the Ute posters who think that serving a mission ends a career you need look no further than your own Paul Kruger to disprove that notion. He served a mission and look where he is now. Ben Olson was more a victim of circumstance with the unsettled coaching situation at BYU. The program at BYU now is very stable and is a perfect fit for Heaps (see ESPN article by Luginbill which backs this up).

The Utes have had a nice run and a well deserved BCS win last year but I feel the pendulum swinging pretty quickly back to BYU. Doesn't look like the BCS win has done much for the Utes recruiting yet. Must be frustrating to have come off a season like that and still have to read all about BYU's recruits.

  • Ute Fan Here
    June 4, 2009 8:45 p.m.

I'm glad he signed with BYU. It helps our conference and allows BYU to win 10 games per year and allows for a meaningful game at the end of the year. It also stirs the rivalry even more. We (Utes)will continue to sign the extremely fast "B" athlete and will develop them with our defense as the anchor. Our defense will still be better than most offenses and the best team will prevail in the end. Defense wins more than not.

    Go Utes!

  • On His Back
    June 4, 2009 8:19 p.m.

A quarterback is only as good as his line. Our offensive line may average 6' 4" and weighs 310 pounds but they run the 50 yard dash in 20 seconds. Teams like Oklahoma, Utah and TCU will be in the backfield before our line can even stand up. This means the super recruit will be on his back much more than he'll be in the end zone. BYU's lack of speed will again be the downfall. If we're ok winning 9 games a year, keep recruiting big. If we want to compete for BCS games, we need to be faster.

  • BCS Team Fan
    June 4, 2009 8:06 p.m.

Interesting development. Just curious - are there many more 4+ star LDS prospects left for 2010, or did BYU scoop them all up today? Overall, relatively few 2010 non-LDS prospects have committed to teams yet, so it will be interesting to see where BYU ranks nationally when all the dust settles. Congrats on the great day, though. Very impressive. Days like this make it hard to defend the "talent gap" rationale for the class distinctions in the current BCS system.

What is up with all these early recruits lately? What's next? Will NCAA coaches start roaming hospitals looking for oversized babies? Texas is a notorious early recruiter, so it isn't suprising to see them around the top of the rankings this early. I think Ohio State had 15-20 verbal commitments from 4+ star 2009 recruits before kickoff last year, which is mind-bogglingly insane! Speaking of them, any predictions who Seantrel Henderson is leaning to(#1 overall recruit in the country)? Heard he was seriously considering OSU. That guy is a monster.

  • What's With the Negativity?
    June 4, 2009 7:59 p.m.

What is with some of you guys? How can anyone see anything negative about this? Three excellent recruits just committed to BYU. That is fantastic - period. This Heaps kid is coming to BYU early with the goal to win the starting job as a true freshman. Riley Nelson will give him a stiff challenge after learning the system behind Hall this season but I expect Heaps will be just too good not to have the job for 4 years as long as he stays healthy. He likely will not go on a mission so there is no reason for the coaching staff not to give him every opportunity to win the job right away. He sounds like an extremely sharp kid. The other two kids could push for serious playing time as freshmen as well. This is a great day. Every Cougar fan should enjoy it without finding something negative to say. Ute fans should even enjoy it in the same way many of us Cougs honestly appreciated your outstanding season last year.

And as far as Ben Olson - he won the starting job 3 times only to have terrible luck with injuries.

Ask Alabama about size versus speed and their recent Sugar Bowl experience.

If the O line can protect him and the Y can continue its winning ways we will only gain more respect as a conference.

...for BYU! 1280 The Zone interviewed all 3 of them together and they sound like good guys, very mature sounding for 17 yr olds. When asked about going on a mission Heaps basically said he'll have to see about that. Go for it, man, take the Steve Young exemption! Plus they said they've circled some big names of players that will be at BYU this Friday for junior day and they will be "recruiting" them to join them at BYU. Bronson Kaufusi was one that Heaps specifically mentioned. Heaps is very determined to have a great team and said he thinks they can get a NC at BYU. I love his attitude! I sure hope it all works out as planned!

Man, some people need to calm down.

To the Ute fans: BYU picked up 3 great recruits in one day - that in addition to the ones they already had and the several more that are likely to commit. True, one big recruit isn't going to change much. But, this is looking to be a good class for BYU, and lots of good recruits definitely make it easier to win. Also, Bronco and BYU haven't said a word about this year's recruiting class. They won't anytime in 2009. They can't. Seems that the people making the most noise about these kids are jealous Ute fans.

To the BYU fans: Shut up about the NC talk already. Didn't you learn anything last year?

    June 4, 2009 5:50 p.m.

If the Utes busted the BCS then how come they aren't National Champions? The BCS wants teams like Utah to be satisfied with 2nd rate.

BYU was the best in 1984 because they had only lost once in two consecutive seasons. Had Oklahoma not refused to play BYU they would have lost in place of Michigan. The reason BYU doesn't have several BCS wins is exactly like you said, because that system didn't exist. Had it existed in 1984 Oklahoma would have forfeited a National Championship, or put their talk where their mouth is, and BYU would have busted the BCS system for real (just like they really busted the system of that day).

That's your history lesson for the day. Now back to the present. BYU is fielding another great team this year, winning the recruiting for years to come, and Utah is already squaking about last year like it's some classic history feat because you know you can't back it up on the field this year.

  • The Real Deal
    June 4, 2009 5:39 p.m.

These commits do nothing short of GUARANTEE a National championship to the cougs in the next 5 years. I'm sorry Ute fans, but your 2 BCS seasons will seem rather paltry when Bronco is hoisting a National Championship trophy, and Heaps is accepting the Heisman trophy. We will have 1984 and 2014 National championships. Hurts doesn't it Ute stings. Like the plunge of a knife dipped in lemon juice. Your two measly BCS championships will wither like unplucked grapes and will wane like the testes of a steroid abuser.

Louie Sakota was a 2-star as well, and look how he ended up. It isn't where you start so much as where you finish. I love that zoobies are already talking about National Championships before this guy has even taken a snap for his Senior year in H.S. A lot can happen. Players can change their mind (i.e. Olson), commit Honor Code violations (Van Noy DUI, the entire 2003 cougar rapist class), or even [God forbid] suffer some sort of career-ending injury.

I remember when the Utes received a Blue-Chip QB commitment [Josh Portis] back in '04. After we lost Meyer to Florida, he decommitted, followed Urban to the Gators, got caught in a cheating scandal, transferred to Maryland, and never took a snap.

are ridicoulis! There are so many better players in California or Florida, Texas than Utah. I thinks it's a hcarity case where if there is a good athlete from a small state they give him a higher ranking. Bronson Kafusi,Chris Badger wouldn't start at some othe better high school teams.

Good job, Jake. I hope you have an awesome career at BYU, and that being hated and slandered by thousands of people, in red, who have never even met you will just roll off your back. Don't mind them. Their I.Q.s are average at best.

Is Apo any good? This is what the Texas BurntOrange Recruiting newletter had to say:

Rivals Reporting Apo Decommit and Verbal to BYU
Apo was a top performer at the camps. I believe that he is also Mormon which would explain his interest in BYU. Sure hope that if we do lose him that we do lock down Darius White!!
We are still strong at WR, but Apo was sure making me not worry about D. White looking around so much. Not sure how the Mormon kids do with their 2 year missions and I read that Apo was going to take a mission anyway. That has to be hard for a program and I was glad to see that UT would offer a kid and allow him to take his mission. If anybody knows more I would love to hear how that works. Apo was the Longhorns #1 WR commit.

Congratulations to UCLA or whatever PAC 10 team BYU just recruited a new quarterback for.

Every year in the off season we hear how BYU has recruited the latest, greatest player ever and then after the season is over we hear how it is really all about the great "experience" the team had or how the media messed up the season by buying into the hype of how BYU was going undefeated and winning the national championship again after drubbing a couple of teams that end up going 2-10 for the year.

  • Paging Ben Olsen...
    June 4, 2009 4:41 p.m.

Hey folks, let's keep this in perspective. Yeah, it's nice to get some free pub out of high profile signings. But remember, none of these guys have played a down yet for BYU, so please keep the "next national champs" chatter down a notch or two, okay? It's only been a few short years since y'all thought Ben Olsen gave you a sure-fire lock on the BCS Championship, but look how that has worked out for ya. Hmmm - let's not be counting our chicks before they hatch, people.

    PS: Utah 48, BYU 24

    June 4, 2009 4:37 p.m.

Byu has had good recruits come to their program, but that hasn't changed that Utah still has 2 bcs game VICTORIES. Ben Olson was the #1, and look how he turned out. I'd take an Alex Smith or Brian Johnson first. The top rated aren't always the best. Look at the 3 and 4 star recruits that Utah and TCU thrive on. I'll take my 2 bcs wins over byu overrhyping recruits any day. Have fun at always falling short of your goals because you think you are better than you are.

I'm very, very happy, but not quite ecstatic. I remember Haloti Ngata's assurances that he'd sign with BYU, right up until LOI day when he went to Oregon. I remember when another QB was The Next Big Thing to happen in Provo, only to have him transfer from one rudderless program to oblivion in another.

I'll wait to see these guys actually suited up and on the field before declaring that my joy is full.

  • To Cewg Fan
    June 4, 2009 4:27 p.m.

To Ute fans- the Cewgs are officially back? After one recruit? Two words- Ben Olsen. We all know how that worked out. How many Mt. Dews have you slammed today?

In 4 years, when he is returning off his mission, will he really want to play for the third fiddle in a non-BSC league? Unfortunately, UW has a much better chance at a national championship than BYU, mostly due to the whole BSC deal.

  • Rise and Shout!
    June 4, 2009 4:24 p.m.

I don't live in Utah but follow both BYU and Utah. This is a great deal for BYU and the MWC and for Utah. The more 4-5 Star recruits sign in the conference, the better it will get future forward! I look forward to a great future..... Now, if Heaps can avoid Canada for his mission, he may keep his commitment and actually play there. Exciting but a LOT of time to pass yet.

  • Ah...yeah!!!
    June 4, 2009 4:22 p.m.

Winning a National Championship at BYU would be more prestigious than at a BCS school because of the degree of difficulty. I like Heaps attitude and fighting spirit. Contrary to detractors, signing this kid brought more than the #1 QB after all, so quit whining (unless you wear red, then it's expected. Tough news for you).

BYU is the only non-BCS team to break through and win a National Championship, and it took consistently winning, especially in consecutive years (1983 & 1984) for BYU to win the NC title.

Lesson learned: that's what it will take to really bust through the BCS biased system and win National Championship, again. If anyone can do it, the team with that tradition knows how and will. At least BYU consistently puts themselves in a position to build off the hype of a previous season. With the recruits that keep coming, that won't change. Man, it's good to be a Cougar. Glad Heaps, Apo, & Stout agree. Welcome to Tradition, Honor, & Spirit. No place better. Go BYU!

  • CA Coug
    June 4, 2009 4:17 p.m.

Apo plays for a very small school so the ranking services have him as a 3 star since it's tough to compare his skills when he is playing inferior competition. However, go read and Texas blogs and they'll tell you how good this kid is. Also, doesn't the fact that Texas was after him tell you something???

  • Hold your horses
    June 4, 2009 4:14 p.m.

First off whoever wrote the "nice work Heaps" @3:22 p.m. must be a troll. I hope you seriously don't feel that.

It is great news, which we should be excited for, but it is still very very early. All they have given is their word and that has already change for one of them. Also out of the 3, only Heaps has accomplished anything in College Football (since he has proven to be a pretty good recruiter). But in reality all they have is hype and expectations, but not a single stat.

I hope all 3 can prove your worth the hype. Best of luck to all three of you. I will be rooting for you in the southwest corner of the endzone, so smile for the picture when you score there. :)

Good Mormons go wherever they can best prepare for their life's missions. Whether that's BYU, Stanford, or Podunk Community College, that decision is between the individual and his Maker -- I'm not going to criticize it. Having said that, way to go, Heaps! Let's bring another national championship home to Provo!

I just experienced the "un-expected" Heaps said.

Look forward to his first game against Utah whether it is at Rice Eccles or Lavell Edwards Stadium.

  • RE: Fan
    June 4, 2009 3:44 p.m.

Heaps chances of winning a NC with BYU is hire than it is with Washingtons program. Besides if the kids are good enough and they get enough of them, then they bring the National Champion title to them selves. But its not all about a National Champion ship. If thats all Heaps was after he could have accepted Oklahomas offer.

Weird thing is, if they want to win a national championship why did they go to BYU. If they want a good education or a good experience then BYU is a good choice. I am not a BYU hater like a lot of you but there is not a chance any of them are going to win a championship at BYU.
