Hats off to all the teams of 1-A. As small schools, we all know that when we have it, we have it and when we don't, we don't. Right now, Escalante has it and I congratulate them for thier hard work and dedication to the sport and thier good sportsmanship. Escalante meets Duchesne tomorrow for the championship and I want our boys to know that our town is extremely proud of them and no matter the outcome tomorrow, they are and will always be our champions. As small schools, we will all have our turn to shine. Escalante has waited a long time to be where they are, and we all know that sooner or later, another team will step up and the torch will be passed. as for right now, Escalante is the reigning champs and hopefully they will be able to make it a 3 out of 4 year run. Good luck tommorrow to the Escalante team and congratulations to all the teams and thier cheerleaders for all thier hard work and thier examples to those coming up behind them. "Let's go Moquis"

hey Valley won with coaches from Escalante High School that is recent graduates of Escalante High School. Proves it is all in fun - after the corn is planted - and then something to talk and woof about. Good kids one and all. Hold a war and they all wear the same uniform.. just a bunch of good country kids giving it their all. Really a great way to end the winter... Track just around the corner, then fall then....

Congratulations to Valley for their win. I heard that both teams played well. I know that Manila has a lot of talent, they just need to play together, as a team. Their can't be any "super stars". Play hard tonight and work the ball as a team. You guys can do this! Good luck!!

Honestly Valley is less than 200 students 7-12 grades depending on the year. There were 23 in the graduating class with me. So I have been able to watch these boys play only four games this year due to my college schedule, but they have won every game I attended. Valley has a great coach and alot of talent. The bench is deep, and coach uses who he needs when he needs them. They are not a tall team, but they are quick. Matt Hoyt has been starting four years on the Varisity now and he proves why at the end of each and every game. The thing is any of those boys can hoop up big points so you can't leave any of them open. They are quick, smart and on top of everything else they play together. Yesterday was rusty and that was yesterday, but today in today and both teams had better bring their game and prove themselves. I promise Valley will not overlook Whitehorse, but they will adjust their game to win. That is the goal and Valley knows how to make and keep its goal. Go Buffaloes...you rock boys! Take State!

fyi for escalante and piute having 70 and 90 boys 7-12. you have more boys in those grades then we have girls and boys total in those respective grades. But us manila people don't make excuses, we had a few good years and have enough talent coming up that we will be back and watch out

I guess I made that sound like I was directing it at Valley, thats not what I meant. Valley is smaller I understand that. And they also played a great game against manila that I believe was fair. I was just speaking in general... Just comparing schools like Duchesne and Monticello with 300 kids 7th-12th to the smaller schools with less than 100.

Valley is not just going to play like they did in region. Okay Whitehorse is not in R.15 these indians got a lot of tricks up their sleeves. I'm predicting a huge upset, I'm looking forward to writing an I-told-you-so remark.

  • Good Job

Great job, no problem you always need one game to get the rust off and they did it victorious so god job. Now they can just go out and play like they did in region with the same results.

    Go Valley!!!

Piute and Escalante are the two smallest schools in 15, Escalante being the smallest and Piute a close second. Escalante only has like 70 boys total and I think that is 7th through 12th grade and Piute only has about 90 boys 7th through 12th. By the way ugly, but nice job valley. I hope region 15 takes 1,2,3, and 5 in the state tourny. Go region 15

1A student...do you know how big Valley is? They are one of the smaller schools too. I know Manila is small, but most of the schools are except maybe Panguitch and a few others. Escalante is actually one of the smallest schools in the state so really that's not much of an excuse in 1A. Tabiona I know is also tiny and they have had some championship teams. When you live in small places it depends on what kind of kids you have in certain years, but also the work ethic of the kids and coaching comes into play a lot of times too.

Not to take anything away from Valley, they are a great team and deserved the win. nice job...
However to "oh waa" we are all 1A, but I know a lot of schools are fudging to stay 1A. And it really does make a difference. When you are comparing a school with 90 kids to a school with 290, its tough.

  • Take State Valley!!!!!

every 1a school is small, don't use numbers as a crutch. all of the schools with too many kids are 2a, so get over it.

    March 4, 2009 3:34 p.m.

So if manila would have won, that would not have been an upset. Manila played worse offensively today than they have for awhile. Do not get me wrong, valley won and they deserved it. Good game and that is how things work out.

    March 4, 2009 3:08 p.m.

scary but as long as you get the first one behind you your good, kind of like the piute game the first day of region

  • Huh?
    March 4, 2009 2:39 p.m.

That's hilarious! From the shortened headline on the 'latest updates' toolbar, I thought there had been an earthquake in the Philippines where a valley was shaking and jittering in the aftermath.

Way to go Valley Buffaloes. Defense wins and your D kept you in the game until you could finish off the Mustangs. Congratulations on a State Tourney win. Keep up the hard work, believe in yourselves and the program and you'll do great. Good job Coach Shakespear. You the man.
