you are right.. we had no seniors on our team this year. we had one junior who was kara jensen,8 sophomores; kiz farrer, alisha hill, kaylee ockey, karlee ockey, alexa nielson, shelbie ballow, kassidy stephenson, and ashley yates. The rest were freshmen. we did ok this season seeing how we are so young. we took 3rd in our region and we are going to come back stronger than ever next year!!
(even though we are going 3A)

The regions are paired with each other on a rotational basis, so it just works out that way this year. How would you decide it impartially? Coaches poll? Sportswriters? Combination? Fancy formula with record and strength of schedule included?

Why are regions 17, 18, and 19 rewarded for being mediocre, some lame team will make it into the semis and a couple of teams from 15 and 16 will be going out the back half of the bracket. Hate to say it but I think some of the games in the consolation bracket will be better then on the winners side. There really has to be a better way.

If Escalante plays like they did last time they will cruise throught the tournament. Great team play, nice win boys! It's kind of bad to see it the state brackets this year, you know the best teams in the state are from regions 15 and 16, and if you look through the brackets there are a lot of games in the first round, let alone before the semi-finals that pit region 15 and 16 teams. A poor structure, I think. It would be awesome to see those teams have the chance to play eachother later in the tournament. It's going to get teams from some of the weaker regions the chance to push a little further into the tournament. It would be nice to see a bracket that would allow region 16 #1 and 15 #1 to meet in the championship.

  • 12 and 0

Looks like Escalante went 12 and 0 in region play. They'll be playing either Manilla(if they take first in region), Rich/Duchesene(if they take second), Salt Lake Lutheran(if they take third), Rich/Duchesene(if they take fourth) in the first round.

I am really shocked to see some of the comments here! If anyone here were to be confronted on the subject I'm sure they would tell you how important sportsmanship is and how godd of sports they themselves are. Harp on someone's school and community...wow that's big of you. Place all sorts of blame on crooked refs, parents, and coaches...ok, yeah that's sportsmanship. When can we admit that a group just played to the best of their abilities and came out on top? Who deserves the credit, poor refs trying to "cheat" a bunch of high school kids, or a group of kids that won by determination, teamwork, and effort? Have you ever tried to ref a game anyway? Try it and tell me you can see everything on the floor! Thanks to those that take the time to be involved with high school sports! Thanks for your contributions! And congratulations to all the teams that play their hearts out week after week! Some of us still appreciate the show...win or loose!

What a game panguitch vs. escalante was! The honest truth about fouls in the first half is that Escalante was perfectly content to stand around and shoot 3's instead of penetrating. You dont draw fouls against your opposition when you do that. As far as Frandsen fouling out, to be honest it should have happened alot sooner, had the Moquis attacked him and the basket. LIVE BY THE THREE AND DIE BY IT!! It was a good game and great win the Moquis. Time to get a bit more physical and step it up though, lots of teams have the Moquis in their sites!

When you are the best player in the league you are going to get calls that go your way. Look At Micheal Jordan in game 6 to close Utah out he threw Russell to the ground and won the game. Is it fair no but when you are the best you get calls others don't. Timmy hughes gets some good no calls Track Norris gets some good no calls that is just the way it goes. If you want to get calls going your way put in the time and be the best. Untill then quit complaining.

Liahona is a new school but has always had basketball at their school only playing in a different league. They go and play jv teams when they say they don't have any seniors. That's a lie, they have two. Beating all those jv teams is real tough but go to maxpreps.com. Altamont Boy's jv team kicked their butt.

    Feb. 15, 2009 7:02 p.m.

Ah, no, no you didn't! I have never seen where anyone has said they were the best in history on any of these posts. I think anyone in Escalante would be crazy to say this team is better than the team 4 years ago when they first won state. They blew everyone in 1A away that year, gave the best 2A teams a real run (and beat a couple) and gave 5A Jordan a real run as well. Chad Cottam, Jason Hughes, and Adam McInelly were a comination that was very hard to top. They just don't have that kind of depth this year.

    Feb. 15, 2009 2:56 p.m.

I have to disagree also with the 2 posts about the semi finals from last year. Say Tim Hughes did foul out in that game. Do you realize that he did NOT score again that game? Mike Munson and Jace Taylor sank the shots that won that game! Rich still got their foul shots from the call, Mike sank the 3's, and Jace iced it with his foul shots. Tim Hughes had nothing to do with that victory after that call was made, I would dare to say even on the Defensive end. Rich blew a 7 point lead, nuff said.

  • 1A South
    Feb. 15, 2009 12:10 p.m.

Um...nobody was crying about fouls, it was just a point that even with a lot of foul trouble Escalante still won! And no, I am NOT Mr. Hughes! In fact, I don't even live in Escalante! But, Hughes gets away with murder? He had 3 fouls in the Second quarter, I don't think he even scored in the first half! And that call reversal from the game last year? Look at the tape guys, Hughes was not in on the call, that was Taylor all the way, and the right call ended up being made. That game tape was replayed over and over by several people with all the contoversy that caused. And yes, go back through these 3 pages of posts, there were people saying Escalante would loose, even people in Escalante thought that it would happen with the way they have played their last few games. How could you say having a father as a ref has anything to do with it? Here's one for you, how about Panguitch having the head ref for this area living there and being a Panguitch fan? Come on guys, what you're saying doesn't mean anything.

anybody remember the 5th foul on hughes that was changed in the semi game a year ago? My guess is that having your father as a referee has it's advantages! If Escalante is crying about fouls, wait till they meet a real team, one from region 16. We will show you some tough fouls, and this year maybe the game will be put in the hands of the kids, not a changed call from the stripes. Think about it! I still have the tissues if you need um!

    Feb. 14, 2009 11:59 p.m.

Frandsen has fouled out of at least four times this year that I can remember. I would think that of all the teams to complain about fouls, it would be Escalante. Talk about getting away with murder, Hughes seems to get all the breaks from the officals. Just saying, there must be other excuses than blaming officals for close games. Keeping track of the fouls sounds like this may be a post from the father that referees himself? That would really be an insult to all officals everywhere. Give credit to the kids, your kids won....they deserved to win, but don't blame a close game on officals when the game is played on your own court. Oh, and by the way....I don't remember anyone posting that Panguitch was going to win. What we heard on this end of the county was that you were going to wipe the floor with our boys. Turned out we played you a little better than you thought?

In the game that everyon was saying Panguitch would win! What a game! And yes, tonight we did see a Panguitch player (Frandsen) foul out...and when he left that really seemed to be a huge turning point for Escalante. How about that first half...Escalante 16 fouls to Panguitch's 6? Wow! They are lucky they had anyone left to play to pull off the win. These kids just keep working together and find a way to win. The region 15 tournament should be a blast to watch this year! I see Wayne just downed Valley tonight too.

    Feb. 13, 2009 9:48 p.m.

Now to set things straight on liahona. They are on probationary status which means they can't play against varsity teams (seniors)that does not mean they can't play their own seniors. While we're talking about seniors Liahona's coach uses a 7 man rotation 4 sophmores 2 juniors and one "senior" (has a year of eligibilty left but has decided to go to college.) Their team is extremley athletic (two of the sophmores play 5a football) which makes the trap they run deadly. The two juniors are very interesting players one is a former allstar lineman for cottonwood who is a very coordinated big body with a soft touch the other is a 6'5 gaurd with a killer midrange jumper. The four sophmores are all about 6' and extremley quick three of them are guards and one is an undersized post about 6'1 170 but has the ability to gaurd kids alot bigger and then he causes a mismatch with how well he runs the court, one is their point guard who made the all tourney team when they were in Oregon. He is special. The other two are wings that are amazing at driving.

For some reason I found Dugway beating GR last night funny. I agree that Dugway always rolls through their region, but this year's team is actually pretty good. They would be decent team in 15 and 16, but not a top 5 in state (they lost to Milford-who isn't even in contention in 15). I am not a Dugway fan, but running Bruce through the ringer the last few comments had me rooting for them a little. Bruce is a GOOD (if not great) coach and has put his time in-He is committed to kids and that has to be worth something. I agreee, Bart must be from Monticello. Look at their recent games--barely beat Green River, barely escaped 2 close games with White horse. Either Monticello is not as good as everybody thinks or Green River and White horse are better than everybody thinks. Look at their schedules--Monticello barely beats Green River, White horse beats Green River by almost 30, then Monticello pulls away from White horse in a close game. I heard it was a 4 point game with a minute to go but white horse had to foul. Bottom line is Monticello ain't a #5 team Bart!

You are obviously a frustrated person in life. Smile a little more! Everyone in 1A basketball knows that it is the most purest form of high school athletics (1A basketball) becasue there is not all the cross town recruiting that just makes 4A and 5A some kind of all star sports. It is just the way it is. Get over it. You are right, we do not have one all star team playing against another for the state championship but we do have one small town against another small town and those kids have been coming to this state tournament since they were born, hoping to be able to play for the "Big game" for 18 years straight. No unfair recruiting practices, just one hard working small town against another hard working small town. It is actually pretty cool. I wish everyone could experience this kind of compitition once in their life. Every game means a lot to most every person in the whole town and when those kids step on the court, it means something to their school pride and to their community! Does anyone have the region 15 girls results?

The region 15 tournament is a tradition! Who cares if everyone else has stopped having tournaments? Region 15 schools want this. Their fans want it. It's exciting, high school basektball at it's best! Yes, some upsets occur. But here is the golden rule: it doesn't matter when or where the game is played, you have to beat the best to be the best. So, it really doesn't matter if it happens in region or state, a loss is a loss, right? Everyone complains that if a team was in a different bracket then they would have won state. How does that make sense? You think you deserve the title, beat that better team that was in your bracket! No excuses.

Its a packed house every year. Standing room only. The only bad thing is when its played at Cedar High School. Hot and stuffy. Nelson from Milford needs to wake up and move it somewhere else. It does brings thousands of dollars into the region each year to run off of, but it would bring more money in if it was centered in the region. And it would be foolish to eliminate such a good thing. Milford isn't finishing games, but must I add that they beat Piute, led Esc by 13 in Esc, led Valley by 13, but did lose by 15+ to Pang both times convincingly. Valley was fortunate to get out of Milford with a w. Valley did play better down the stretch of the game, but don't count Milford out just yet. It is unlikely they will pull the upset, but they are capable. BV is too if they would not be beat mentally before the tip off.

Neither of those teams have had a game within 15 pts. The only game that will be a good one and always is, is the 4 and 5th place game. Milford and BV have been stuck in the loser bracket for years and wouldn't have a chance even on their home floor let alone a nuetral site.

Altamont cant get in even if they win out. They are now going to have to play for school pride. With all the rough non support from their high school, they have a long way to go. I know coach park and his team want nothing more now than a win against tabby and duchesne. That would change things up a little in region 16. They have been playing better ball as of late. But a little to late for them to make a run at state. Tabiona has a better team than Duchesne, but the game is in duchesne. Bad place for tabby. Duchesne is playing much better team ball though. Hopefully losing jones wont effect them.

    Feb. 12, 2009 11:42 a.m.

3rd place out of region 16 is the most favorable position for the state tournament. I'm sure this is a no-brainer for the coaches. Look for Duchesne to beat Tabby, but for Tabby to come out the real winners. Anyone bet against this theory?

This should be a good game tomorrow night in the Lion's Den. If Juab wins, then they'll match up most likely with San Juan and get spanked. If they loose, they better pray to win the coin toss and avoid that 5th place- they'll get hammered by either Manti or South Sevier. Best case scenario they finish 4th and actually have a chance to win a game against the 3rd seed. Interesting to see if the "new coach" is as smart as some of the local Juab bloggers seem to think he is.

    Feb. 12, 2009 10:56 a.m.

only complaint about it this year is the time. Mon,Tue,Wed. Week off before tourney for winning two teams. Few teams do well after week long breaks. Agree with above comment, Tourney's reward teams that bloom late. 15 tourney is always a dog fight regardless of team record at the end of region play. Look for. Regardless, region 15 could see all 7 teams at state this year, with a much improved lower end.

I agree, region fifteen tourney is awesome to watch and is as fun as the state tourney any day. Just look at last year's tournament- wayne beats piute by a buzzer beater and escalante falls to panguitch. Then in the next round piute and escalante play a great game followed by wayne and pang for a single digit championship game. Competitive and fun to watch!

Have you been to the Region 15 Tourney? That is a good if not better than the state tourney! It rewards team that get better throughout the season. Come watch and see why they keep it-revenue and entertainment are the reasons. it sounds like a Rebel fan is afraid Manila or Altamont might upset them in the Tourney. Why do you think 15 does so well at the state Tourney? It's like the ACC Tourney it adds experience to the big dance games. Esc proved last year an upset can help wake up some teams. Come see for yourself!

Region tournaments are built for upsets....if you play a home and home schedule that should be enough. The questions is, why have all regions except for region 15 done away with the tournament? Time for region 15 to follow....get rid of the region tournament.

    Feb. 12, 2009 8:41 a.m.

Coach Bruce is a good basketball coach. His longevity in the sport alone demands all of our respect. I don't pretend to know, but I would imagine that Dugway would be a difficult place to coach. Notice that I said that he is a good coach, not a great coach. Having said that, he is an incredible motivator that has the ability to intimidate officials and fans to his advantage. Using the enrollment numbers as an excuse is weak at best. This would mean that Tabiona would never beat Valley, Valley would never beat Panguitch, Panguitch would never beat St. Joseph, St. Joseph would never beat Rich, Rich would never beat Whitehorse, and Whitehorse would never beat Duchesne. Let alone mention Escalante & Manila which have 4 of the last 10 or so titles. This excuse is weak and tiresome.

Getting away from basketball........Mr. Bruce's legacy will be more than a basketball coach. He has done more for 1A sports at the state level than any other individual. He has fought many battles, and for that all schools should be thankful. He has been a lifelong educator.....Principal and teacher. Give the man his due, he deserves it!

    Feb. 12, 2009 8:41 a.m.

Look at Region 15-Any team can beat any team on a given night- The thing that is going to save Pang, Valley, and Wayne from getting upset first day of region is that they will be at home. Milford, Piute or even (maybe)BV could upset any of those on a neutral floor. Piute and Milford have played Esc tough at Esc but they both are just not quite there yet. I would watch out for either of them two teams if they get it going. I really wish we had the traditional Region Tourney this year as close as it is going to be. Region 16 needs a tourney again-that would make it real fun the last few weeks and give Manila or Taby a chance to overtake Rich and Duchesne.

Most coaches do a good job getting their kids ready to go. They also play games that sometimes they might lose. Lets not just pick one year, I would love to see the overall record between Dugway and the teams you listed for the past 30 years. I'm sure the numbers would speak for themselves. I've been following 1A Basketball for over 40 years and there is not a coach out there that game plans as well if so name him. Also, look at the enrollments before you down play the accomplishments. Scheduling is controlled a lot by money and are you going to tell me these teams can afford to travel those great distances? That is why we have regions to minimize the costs and length of travel whenever we can. I'm not saying the teams you listed don't have very good programs just give the smaller schools like Dugway and Taby credit for their successes.

  • RE 1:13 post
    Feb. 11, 2009 4:01 p.m.

I'm sure if we all want to go back far enough we can find a year when one team beat another. The fact is Bruce has played bad teams and is in a traditionally bad region. I do think he has a pretty good team this year. I don't think he is the best coach ever! You are talking about years and years of winning against terrible schedules. If they were so good every year they would schedule a home and away with teams like Rich, Wayne, Valley, Duchesne. They don't do that because in the last fifteen years they have not been very good. At least they are traveling to Manila, and I think it will be a good game. I am picking Manila by 6. Don't worry they will get to state for the 40th time.

I am not even from dugway. I am in region 16. If anyone really looks at who they are playing they will have played all region 16 schools exsept rich. To me it looks as if Bruce is playing better competition. no they have not beat a 16 or 15 school yet, but they are not as bad as you all make them out to be. Coach bruce has always had a good team out of very little talent, and low school numbers. He is one of the best 1A coaches around.
Dont rip on the players in any team. They have no say who they play. They are there to learn and play for their school. For their own pride. And for their coaches they love. Just let them all play for that.

Bear Lake Rich Rebel Fan if I'm not mistaken the last time Dugway played Rich at State 2003 Dugway won on the second night of state?? George Bruce, padding his stats is an insult with ignorance. I think you would have to agree with the fact the larger the enrollment the better pool of talent you have to choose from. Dugway is not blessed enrollment numbers like Duchesne 93 students in the 11th/12th grades, Rich 73, Wayne 72, Valley 51 or Panguitch 65 (Dugway 36 11th/12th -- Tabiona 35) but they continue to be competitive with these bigger schools why?? Because George pads his schedule?? I don't think so!! maybe his record speaks for itself and he is simply the best coach ever in the state of Utah. His teams have dominated regardless of the competition throughout the years. They won region, placed or won State with teams such as South Summit, Park City, Waterford, Layton Christian and yes the teams mentioned above all in the mix. What is the number now 39 straight trips to State.

  • response to Liahona hater
    Feb. 11, 2009 12:21 p.m.

It seems obvious to me (since it was mentioned twice already) that Liahona had NO SENIORS this year that actually played. And even if there was, the rule is that their team is considered JV status in the first year. They, of course can play seniors, they just can't play against varsity teams unless in a tournament setting (which they did by taking second in one of the largest Christmas tournaments on the west coast, losing to the defending Oregon state 4A champions JV team by 3 in OT). So get your facts straight. I'm not as sure that they will be amazing next year, but they are definitely on the right track, and with all 5 starters returning, they won't get worse.

But I do think it would be a wake-up call to the boys. Playing selfishly...I really disagree with that! They play a passing game and team ball more than anyone but maybe Valley. These games are getting closer because other coaches are starting to figure out ways to defend against Escalante better. I have seen 2 games that have really shut down Tim Hughes. But you know what, they always find someone else who can score, and that team play pulls them through, coupled with their excellent D and quickness on the floor. They will still pull it off this year.

Thanks for your insight. No, I'm not a bitter coach, just an observer of Juab basketball. I will agree, the last two years were pretty rough, however, prior to that the boys program was extremely competitive. In fact, they played for the state championship on four different occasions if my memory serves me right. With that track record, I would imagine those kids learned and loved the game of basketball. A couple more cupcakes on the schedule and they will probably lose to Manilla, also Tabiona should be higher I put them at 8 in those rankings. Panguitch also higher, they have been overacheivers so far but they have some solid kids, there advantage comes in the fact that refs know they only have 5 and will not foul their best players out. Watching Norris he should be fouled out by the 2nd quarter in every game.

You are absolutely right about Dugway...they have a weak schedule every year. But, their Region 18 dominance is just about over. Liahona this year came in as the new school in the region (with a one year probation). This meant they played every team in the region and those teams had to sit their seniors. Liahona DESTROYED everyone including being ahead vs. Wendover 48-2, beating Dugway at Dugway by 25, and beating 2A power Layton Christian's JV team by 6 at there place. My nephew is on the team and I've watched them play and I am very impressed! They are better than Dugway. And the best part is that the whole team is back next year (of the 7 that play regularly, 4 are Sophomores and 3 are juniors), and their coach will be scheduling 2A and 3A teams outside of their region (Liahona had a tougher schedule this year than anyone in their region, and they weren't even considered full varsity). Mark my words...Liahona will take Region 18 next year and make some noise in state, the reign of Dugway is over!

Although San juans wins were big last weekend they might be ranked one spot too high!

    Feb. 10, 2009 10:13 a.m.

    1. Escalante - Will end the season without a defeat in 1A

    2. Rich - Second best; Next year the Rebels will be the team to beat

    3. Valley - The best team nobody talks about

    4. Duchesne - Region 16 has closed the gap on region 15

    5. Wayne - A bigger threat than Panguitch

    6. Panguitch - Overachievers, but still better than the rest of the field

    7. Piute - Just a notch below the rest. They too are looking forward to next year.

    8. Dugway - Maybe still too high for this team

    9. Monticello - the best out of region 19

    10. Tabiona - Gets this spot by default

Dugway has played 2 teams outside of region 18 (not counting soph teams)-Milford and Duchesne and lost to both-Dugway would be last in both 15 and 16-nuff said! The SLTrib is a joke!

Even better I just found the ranking the trib released yesterday. In this one they put Dugway at #2 HA HA
    Class 1A

    1. Escalante (14-1) - Rolling in Region 15

    2. Dugway (13-2) - Too much on offense

    3. Panguitch (13-3) - Can challenge for title

    4. Rich (13-5) - Advancing towards the postseason

    5. Duchesne (13-3) - Will be in the mix

The rest are not that bad but seriously you can't be taken serious when you put a team that is not even top 10 in the state at # 2

The tribune is a joke, this is there latest rankings, whoever siad Dugway is #1 was looking at last years rankings at the bottom of the page which they stupidly still have posted. The date on there is 02/19/2008, however these rankings they just did 1 1/2 weeks ago. Get a good laugh everyone!!! Dugway and Green River CONGRATS

    Class 1A

    1. Escalante (12-1) Region 15 is theirs

    2. Duchesne (12-2) Dominating of late

    3. Dugway (10-2) Scores easily

    4. Green River (8-3) Making run in Region 19

    5. Panguitch (10-3) Slipping slightly

I agree that Rowland Hall will beat Juab on Friday. The game is at Rowland Hall, Juab is having internal problems galore (we only beat ALA by 9?), and Rowland Hall has better coaching. As far as talent goes, Juab has a huge, huge advantage, but I am still saying Rowland Hall by 10+. Juab might not win again.

Any comments out there on this game? It should be a good game. I'm guessing Rowland Hall by 5+- better coaching- similar talent levels.

While San Juan's wins are impressive, do you think they have it in them to win a playoff game and get to the big dance? It seems like they have choked under pressure as of late and haven't been to the round of 8 for sometime.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to The Deseret News for always having awesome and up to date coverage of high school sports. They spoil us! You can find out when every team in the state plays and what happened in every game for this year and many years back. You guys are incredible. I have two nephews that play ball in Idaho and have been trying to follow them. It is close to impossible. Thanks DNews. You are truly the leaders in high school sports. Also, SLTRIB, take a note from these guys. I have not seen it but someone said you had Dugway first in the state in 1A! WOW! Uh, have you not figured out that Dugays head coach sets up the easiest schedule possible each year so the win loss record can get padded? Do your homework sltrib. It looks like Dugway may get a first round win because of the match-ups this year. It will be the first for them in a long time. They should be ranked number 12. They sound as if they are betterthan usual and congratulations to them for that.

Wow, how about San Juan's two big road wins over the weekend. looks like they are playing great D-fense right now. Beating Richfield by 19, and Manti by 2. Looks like the next 2A champ will be most likely from Region 12, S. Sevier, San Juan, or repeat by Manti, and maybe throw in Layton Christian from Region 14 those are my semi final picks....should be a great region and state tourney.
