  • Just curious...
    Sept. 21, 2008 5:17 p.m.

Did anyone see the LSU - Auburn game last night?? Now THAT is football boys and girls. Good luck to both the U and the Why.

  • BJ did look bad yesterday
    Sept. 21, 2008 7:45 a.m.

    and he admitted it.

The outpouring of sarcasm & condescension from most Y fans here is because they were all AFA fans yesterday, frustrated when the Utes pulled out the W.

Got the gut-check W on the road against another 3-0 team, 2-0 in MWC, no injuries, still room for improvement, a couple of weeks off from conference play.

BJ's best football this season is ahead of him. He'll get better, guaranteed. Not perfect, but better.

MWC goes 3-1 this week vs non conference foes.

BYU fans, please quit with the Utah schedule bashing.

    Michigan 1-2
    UNLV 3-1
    Utah State 1-3
    AFA 3-1
    Total: 8-7

    N. Iowa (FCS) 2-1 (both wins vs FCS teams)
    Washington 0-3
    UCLA 1-2
Wyoming 2-2 (with 1 win vs FCS team)
Total 5-8 (with 3 wins vs FCS teams)

Neither team has a great schedule resume. But win out and you're likely a BCS buster...

  • according to some zoobies
    Sept. 20, 2008 11:11 p.m.

...just cancel the rest of the college football season and hand BYU a BCS bowl bid and a national title too... I don't mind most BYU fans, just the ones that think their in contention for a national championship every year... come back to earth

Strangely enough the UNLV win gets better every week. Go Utes !

Thought I needed to weigh in on the Pittsburg Ute - just to post some comments on the Ute side of sports since so many Yewts feel the need to weigh in on the news coverage of the Cougars and constantly make negative comments.

    Go Cougars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sept. 20, 2008 10:54 p.m.

I am getting so sick of all the Kewgars talking down the Utes strength of schedule week in and week out. Can anyone compare the combined records of the Utes opponents vs. the Kewgars??? The Utes strength of schedule is much better than our little brothers down south.

Even lowly Arizona who lost to New Mexico last week crushed UCLA today so what does that really say about your weak win last week???

  • wow
    Sept. 20, 2008 10:42 p.m.

I love how every team Utah plays somehow turns into a horrible team. One past said that this is Air Force's worst team in years, ha. That being said, the Utes are atop the MWC and they'll be there till January baby. Go Utes!!

  • good win utahr

When we play Air Force we'll show you how to shut them out. Same for USU.

  • 53 yards rushing

I am surprised no one is talking a bout Utah holding AF to 53 yards rushing. That is the stat of the day!!!!!!!!!!

    Sept. 20, 2008 10:25 p.m.

Way to go Utes. The entire Mt West wins with more ranked teams. I would love to see just one Utah loss in November, other than that, keep rolling on. A win is a win. I love rivalries, but all BYU fans should stop and realize how great it is to have the country looking at both the U and the Y.

Cougars and Utes should be pulling for each other all year. Save the rivalry until the actual game. A loss by either team before then doesn't do either school any favors. Here's hoping for two legitimate BCS favorites, not just BCS busters, in late November!

  • wow!

This win over Air Force proves that Utah is better than USC. We should be ranked #1.

    Sept. 20, 2008 10:12 p.m.

Re: out of state Ute: didn't the utes blow out a UNLV team that beat then #15 ASU? Very few teams in the league get to play the top 5 during the regular season, especially when out of conference. There's also no motivation for those perennially ranked teams to play teams like Utah and BYU as it looks really bad to lose to us ( which is always possible) and doesn't help to win. Somehow beating an ASU will alwys be a good OOC game for those teams b/c people have in their mind that ASU is alwys good.

Props to the U for winning a game that's always a dogfight for them and for stopping one of the very best run offenses in the nation. That sounds like being proven to me.

  • TexasCoug
    Sept. 20, 2008 10:03 p.m.

The win over Air Force by Utah is more impressive than the win by BYU over Washington. In 10 games, Air Force would beat Washington 6-8 times. Air Force plays Utah tough... they are like "utah" is to BYU, doesn't matter the year the game will be tough. Good win by the Utes, I'm not sure that BYU will have a test until TCU so who knows what team BYU really has. If I was Bronco, I'd just send up Anae and the third stringers to wipe up Utah State and give the rest of the team the weekend off to get good seats at conference :) GOBYUBABY!!!

    Sept. 20, 2008 10:03 p.m.

Lets see 50 point home victories over Wyoming and UCLA, that sounds kind of familiar. That is exactly what Utah did last year. That may comfort you, but it did not make the Utes world beaters last year. You have not played anybody yet. You have pulled out one road win against Washington which is in the bottom 10 according to ESPN. All of Utahs road wins are better. Wait for the TCU game, then come talk to us. All you have to now is lose to UNLV and you can duplicate what Utah did last year.

    Sept. 20, 2008 9:56 p.m.

Keep up the arrogance. You'll get your comeuppance. Ever heard of the pride cycle?

Nice work today, Utes. I can forget about shaky play as long as the team pulls out a win. I was wondering when they'd start pounding the football with Mack and Asiata. I'd like to see much, much more of that in the future.

Another notch in the belt for the Utes. Great game!

The tension is rising for Nov. 22!!!

  • congrats u guys
    Sept. 20, 2008 9:46 p.m.

I see some of you are complaining there aren't any BYU fans posting congratulatory comments on your artcle so here I am, the answer to your prayers.

Way to hang in there and squeak past a weak Air Force team, one of their worst in years.

So Brian Johnson threw 1 TD, fumbled twice, got sacked 5 times, the AFA defense scored on your offense, and Sakoda missed both of his field goal attempts. And then you stopped Air Force's powerful ground game so they started burning you with their awesome passing game.

Sounds like it's all coming together for U. Great job.

    Sept. 20, 2008 9:43 p.m.

I agree with out of state Ute, both teams are unproven. But Utah with 3 road wins and only one home game so far is much more impressive than 3 home wins against really bad teams and a close as you can get victory over a winless Washington Team. Come talk to us after the TCU game, that will be a choking loss like you have on the road every year. You have not seen a defense like TCUs or Utahs yet, when it doesnt come easy, we will see how you do.

  • Great Win!!
    Sept. 20, 2008 9:38 p.m.

This is encouraging to me, despite the breakdowns. We're winning, which contrasts our usual slow-starts under Coach K. Go Utes!!!!!!!!

  • Re: Re Pittsburgh Ute
    Sept. 20, 2008 9:37 p.m.

"8 consecutive quarters of no scoring from the opposing team! I don't care who you're facing, that's impressive."

The fact you even had to include the second sentence makes the achievement less impressive.

  • Out of state Ute
    Sept. 20, 2008 9:17 p.m.

Considering that Northern Iowas is Div. IAA, Washington has yet to win a game, UCLA is just aweful and Wyoming is bottom tier in the MWC, I find it interesting Cougar fans believe their team belongs with the cream of college football. Bottom line: They haven't played anyone good - at all. Frankly, neither has Utah. BYU or Utah, if they played Missouri, Florida or USC, would get killed.

  • Mike
    Sept. 20, 2008 9:01 p.m.

Hey BYU fans. Remember just two weeks ago when you beat a terrible Washington team on the road, by one point, on a blocked kick? Remember how virtually the entire college football world said that BYU wasn't that good, and that you would likely lose two or three games?

Do you remember how unfair you thought that was?

Then why are you hear, saying the exact same things after Utah wins a close game against a good team on the road?

  • TheHailstorm
    Sept. 20, 2008 8:29 p.m.

A win is a win and a road game even better. Predictions aside I am just happy that the UTES are 4-0. That said , with th press and notoriety getting more attention that BYU and Utah is getting national exposure and that this media attemtion could go a long way in recruiting better blue chip players.
    Good for both schools .
It wouldn't hurt the Blue Bloods down in Utah County to congratulate the Utes for a win, but I think I know why. Has anyone noticed that the comment section on a University of Utah articles get blasted and smacked right after the Junior High school bell rings down there ?

    Sept. 20, 2008 8:14 p.m.

How can you barely win a game when you nearly double the opponents time of possession, more than double offensive yards, triple opponents first downs, have twice as many penalties, play on the road, hold a rushing power to just a few yards, and have to win it at the last second? Good thing Weber is next. They won again today and have blown out 2 of their opponents.

    Sept. 20, 2008 7:50 p.m.

Good win on the road. Always have to feel good about winning on the road when you lose the turnover battle. Like to see those issues get corrected, but here is to 4-0 and 2-0 in MWC. To Casey: How many turnovers did BYU have against Northern Iowa?

  • re: we play competitive games
    Sept. 20, 2008 7:47 p.m.

Hey its not our fault nobody can play to the level that BYU is on. I guess we can give the other teams handicaps. But you mentioned we have no dignity by blowing teams out, need I remind you of your 2004 team that did the same exact thing the Cougs are doing now, blowing everybody out the water. And speaking of dignity the utes sure have a lot of it, honestly how many teams will kick an onside kick when they are up by 50. Definition of Dignity: Bronco taking all the starters out in the third quarter of both games.

  • Rear View Mirror
    Sept. 20, 2008 7:45 p.m.

The rear view mirror is the best place to have Air Force. That was a good win. Utah dominated the running game holding Air Force to less than 100 yards rushing while having two running backs go over 100 yards. Turnovers continue to be a problem. Those need to be cleaned up immediately.
Having 3+ turnovers will not cut it.

  • TheHailstorm
    Sept. 20, 2008 7:37 p.m.

    I'll take the win.

  • tophero
    Sept. 20, 2008 7:23 p.m.

The great part was seeing AFA competitive. Utah certainly had the miscues but don't get carried away with discounting what was a balanced offense and defense. The team got the job done. Strong win.

  • Re: Pittsburgh Ute
    Sept. 20, 2008 7:17 p.m.

Actually, I think it was something like 5 turnovers, not 3 (and didn't most of those come in the first half?). If Mr. Johnson thinks that his performance is good enough to get past the Cougars, he needs to think again. Our defense has played very well the last two games...8 consecutive quarters of no scoring from the opposing team! I don't care who you're facing, that's impressive. And 10 forced turnovers in the last 2 games?! BYU's defense sure is looking strong. I can't wait for November...GO COUGARS!!!!!

  • a win is a win.
    Sept. 20, 2008 7:13 p.m.

who cares if it was convicingly or not. It doesn't matter if it was won with touchdowns or field goals. I think the zoobies need to study a rulebook and they will fing that field goals are totally legal. Bu seeing as how your totally unobjective i'll just say this. If sakoda was playing for BYU you guys would say a darn word about his offense at all. Live with the fact that there is a much bigger world than provo and you may get some credibility back.

  • We Play competitive games
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:58 p.m.

I feel sorry for BYU fans who must get bored with all of these blowouts. I would rather be a fan of a 2-10 ute team than a 12 time BCS BYU team. I have my dignity.

  • Utah Fan
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:57 p.m.

A win is a win. Lets clean up some mistakes and we will be in good shape. The defense showed up big holding the Air Force ground game to 50 something yards. They were averaging 350

  • matten
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:53 p.m.

Just got back from the game. Utah and Air Force both played poorly. If they don't both pick it up the rest of the season, there is no way either of them will beat BYU... or TCU. Looking forward to seeing the Utes play in Laramie. That one will be fun, too.

  • re anon, first post
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:44 p.m.

I assume you are referring to the Utes loss against AF last year? Pretend byu loses Hall, Collie, and Unga against UNI, not the same team against that Washington team is it?

  • haha
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:39 p.m.

Good to see the byu trolls out blasting the Utes for wining what is usually a tough game for them. But guess what, Utah is atop the MWC conference, and like byu has a 0 next to the four wins. Pretty, no, but a win nonetheless. Figure out a way to rid the team of the turnovers, and its much much prettier. Holding AF to 52 rushing yards is impressive, luckily the 75 yd fumble return doesn't count. And why on earth is there an idiot still harping on running up the score? Oh, a BYU fan, right. Go Utes!

  • Not Surprising
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:34 p.m.

So I was just on the Cougar board. A lot of Ute fans congratulating the Cougs on a good win and saying they're impressive. Here, not even one BYU fan congratulating the U on a 4-0 record. Granted they didn't blow out their opponent or look as impressive at times. That goes without saying. Cougar fans can't even grow up and say congrats. instead they have to come on here and say things like "The Utes clearly aren't as good as everyone says they are..." and "don't be surprised when BYU holds Utah scoreless too". Get some class Cougar fans. Tell a team good job on a win!!! No wonder nobody in the college sport world likes you.

  • re Yewts!
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:36 p.m.

Exactly, BYU will be there, and the Utes will be bustin through somewhere else.......catch my drift?

  • 445 to 195
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:31 p.m.

It was difficult to watch the turnovers keep AF in the game. 445 yards compared to 195 yards in total offense. The defense looked good. Brian looked scared half the time even though he through for nearly 300 yards.

Correct the issues and we'll be fine.

  • Go Utes
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:28 p.m.

Hum. What I dont understand is why any one thought this game was going to be diffrent. The experts said utah would win by 7 (and they did) and the last 10 years vs AF the game has been desided by 10 points or less. for what ever reason these teams play each other very tuff. It was a good win, no matter what better be 4-0 then 3-1 ?

  • Keetch
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:29 p.m.

Wow why is everybody dissing the utes for a win over a 3-0 Air Force.?? I admit it wasn't the prettiest win ever, but people... It's called improvement! We have it in us to win out the season and go to a BCS game. I promise you that. we will need to work on it, but we can do it. So everyone just lay off their back and have some confidence. Just look at the stats, we are better in every game, it's just dumb mistakes. That can be FIXED! GO UTES!!!

  • good job, almost
    Sept. 20, 2008 6:12 p.m.

i am wondering how utah can feel good about their team this year, they have played so horrible at times that even UNLV was tied with them, but then a different team comes out and wins the game. it will take a lot more than that to beat the cougars, if they can get past TCU. don't be surprised when byu holds utah scoreless too... with their bench players on the field for half the game just like UCLA and Wyoming.

    Sept. 20, 2008 5:58 p.m.

I'm sorry the Utes didn't toast the Academy 30-0, which was certainly possible. And you don't have to parse the stats a lot to know why they didn't; it was penalties, turnovers, and maybe 3-4 miscues.

But, hey, the AFA has had Utah snakebit for years. So a 30-23 victory that brings us to 4-0 is nonetheless sweet.

  • Well...
    Sept. 20, 2008 5:58 p.m.

    Sept. 20, 2008 5:51 p.m.

The Utes looked great on both lines. The running game was smash mouth and impressive. Air Force could not run at all. But Brian Johnson made me nervous all game, I think he had 3 turn overs (1 was a crazy lucky pick). We are 4-0 but we didnt look as strong as our record shows. We are the MOST penalized team in the NCAA! The lack of discipline and the turn overs are going to catch up to us if they arent corrected soon. Still, we are 4-0 and in first place in the MWC, so we'll take it. Here's hoping we get better every week.
