If you score the medals like you would a track meet, 10 points for Gold, 8 for
Silver, 6 for Bronze, the U.S.A. wins 880 to 846.It's nice to get a lot of
Gold, but it's also nice to have depth.
So the U.S. wins the medal count by 10....imagine what a rout it would have been
had the Chinese not gotten major home-court advantage in basically all of the
judged sports. It was funny hearing the commentators during diving and
gymnastics absolutely livid over how high the Chinese competitors' scores were,
and it seemed to be a systematic thing. Yes, every host nation tends to benefit
from "judge warping" (U.S. in Atlanta, Aussies in Sydney, Greeks in Athens,
etc.), but this Olympics it was WAY over the top.
