He's smart. He knows that if he's seen hugging barry H. obama at the convention that his next six republican challangers will run that image against him. jemery- why bring up a sore spot like swallow?

Say what you want about matheson. I remember how he beat john swallow back in the day. Anyone that can do that is tops in my book. Swallow is as 2 faced as they come.

My level of respect dropped for Matheson. Represent your party, Jim, good grief. It's difficult enough voting Democrat in Utah. "Foregone conclusion" right? For the party, Not in the state.

And we wonder why more democrats don't vote.

I wish Matheson the best, and I understand that it is just for show, but I know Utah GOP had higher than 90% of its delegates show up for voting this year, and that included delegates from the 1st district which didn't have anyone running against Rep Bishop.

He's just pretending to be conservative, independent, and not a hard-core partisan. It is all pretend and show. He does this pretend thing sooo well!

Since he is little more than Pelosi's poodle when he votes in the House, we would be better off if he skipped Congressional sessions and votes as well.

How does a politician's mind really work. Does he and his staff really think that we are going to believe his excuse for not attending his Party's National Convention?

This is the great moment that they hold every four years and he's going to skip it for such a lame reason?

What happens to these people when they go to Washington? Is there some secret government entity that sucks out of their brains the ability to reason and tell the truth?

Did Jim really think this one through? Of course it's going to make the news and grow and grow, especially with his lame excuses.

Why not lay out the ideological reasons that he doesn't feel comfortable at the convention?

"Matheson's never been a real Democrat, anyway."

That's why he's been elected and re-elected - he represents the people in his district and not a political party!

No surprise here. Matheson's never been a real Democrat, anyway.

He's a coward, no two ways about it. He takes the principled stand of not standing for anything. Uber-doofus.
