Alta beat SF 4-3 in the UBA 17 year-old championship game...

  • To St. George teams
    Aug. 2, 2008 10:55 p.m.

You have finally caught up with the big city. You have have thrown your graduated seniors to the wind. What do you owe them? They were loyal to your program for their school years. Salt Lake coaches have done this for years and now look at the mess the baseball community is in. Beware of this selfish mentality. You missed the boat this past year. Dixie, SC, and PV could have won the Legion tournament. A lot of good players from your area would have had a chance to play and showcase their talent. You may have cost some of these boys a college scholarship.
    Sorry for your loss.

    Aug. 1, 2008 11:59 p.m.

Just to let you know the st. george schools played in there own league down here and went to a lot of tournaments all over the state and Vegas just couldn't seem to pay money for insurance to come up to salt lake and compete against all graduated seniors and college players for 2 games when we were playing better teams all over the west. St. George teams keep no graduated seniors so they have all 09 graduates on there rosters. I think Prestwich (SC)and Nyberg (Dixie) played on the select up north. Believe me there was baseball in St. George this summer and all programs will be ready to compete again in 09.

    Semi-Finals:

    Alta 10 Provo 8
    Spanish Fork 3 Jordan 1

and both games were actually well played.

    Championship Game: ???

Anyone out there know what happened, again not hopeful that this score will be called in...

At last, some information on the UBA league. I am sure this didn't come from the owners. Sorry, going out to dinner instead of watching 8 teams that could care less. Will be going to the Legion tourney though, going to where the real organization is. Good kids go to the UBA but the leaders need some work.

  • Final 8 Set for UBA 17 and Under
    July 31, 2008 3:18 p.m.

The final 8 teams from 27 league teams are set for the "UBA State Tournament." The tournament started with pool play and whittled the 27 teams down to 8 teams and a single elimination tourney which will be concluded at Cate Field Friday night. The games are:

    Jordan @ Skyline
    Spanish Fork @ Riverton
    Alta @ Bountiful
    Provo @ Lehi

All games are at 5:30 PM today. The Jordan--Skyline winner will play the Spanish Fork--Riverton winner at 3:00 PM tomorrow while the Alta--Bountiful winner will play the Provo--Lehi winner at 5:30 PM. The championship game will be at 8:00 PM.

Just some information because I admit the UBA has done a real lousy job promoting its league and top teams. Sorry no results on the 15 and 16 year-old divisions.

You were told wrong I was at the prospect games and there were coaches from just about every college in the state of Utah and not just their assistants but the head coach from Utah and BYU were both there and I heard from a couple of the players that two players were offered scholarships after their performance at the game. So keep listening to other idiots like yourself.

Great post. By the way what teams won the "prospect" games?? Blue or Green?? Was Joe Torre or Tommy Lasorda there recruiting?? No, just a lot of dads with their radar guns, I was told.

Congrats to all who are involved with the Legion State Tourney! In case any of you missed it, there have actually been some baseball games played! Yes, it's too bad that some teams aren't involved in the tournament, but why take away from those who are? The teams who are playing well will benefit throughout the high school season. Love where you live and play with your school. These memories of baseball are great ones that will last forever, for both players and their families. People need to quit whining about everyone else, do what is best for YOUR child and quit worrying about the "after high school stuff!" Enjoy the experience - it will be over before you know it and remember, as fun and intense as the games are - IT IS STILL A GAME!

I thought baseball was a game, to be played by boys. High School ball could teach them how to play as a team and back each other up. Learning that the strength of a team is much greater than that of an individual.

Enjoy your new found dream of modern baseball. Glad to see you are all getting along in the stands and comparing notes on who is the best because no one else will care...

It would be great if we all supported our Utah kids in their quest to develop their talent to their highest level. We should stop putting down programs and kids. Just support our kids from Utah! Positive thinking and positive actions bring about success. Lets not be our own worst enemy. Utah has some great baseball players. I hope that they enjoy success and love the game to its fullest.

It seems that last year Marshalls were mostly the elite kids that had graduated HS. Now its moving down to a big list of Juniors and Sophs. Evolving just like UBA. Also sounds like a lot of talk is going on. Doubt it's the kids must be parents...

Not sure who it is getting their books paid for only. Wouldn't have put them on if I knew. Surprised that you know. Usually kids exaggerate what they are getting. By the way, I am pulling for all the legion teams. I agree, it is the way to go and gets away from the UBA, a baseball place in name only. Good luck to all teams still playing, especially for something that matters. Wish my kid was still playing this summer.

  • Re: Not all but some

Keep your list around for 4 years and then post it with "where are these kids now". You'll be lucky if two or three are still playing at these schools.
Better yet the D News should do that. It would put most of these opinions in a whole new light...

  • RE: Not all but some

Impressive group indeed. One question? Are you really going to count a player(S) who are just getting their books paid for as a baseball scholly??

  • to: UBA has been disappointing
    July 28, 2008 4:18 p.m.

Until people really quit supporting the UBA, the money will keep rolling in. Most people won't admit it but the UBA big thing is Spring Training. That is a total joke with the scouts only there to see whomever the academy loves. I have a youngster that is a good ballplayer but I think, if he is good enough, that he will be seen without ever stepping in the UBA doors. Am also hoping that Legion goes back to the old days when summer ball meant alot.

  • UBA has been disappointing
    July 28, 2008 1:56 p.m.

Indeed American Legion has lost its luster. In the early to mid 1990's over 50 or so Utah programs existed, many among the Wasatch Front. It was very difficult to just make the 16-team tournament.

The UBA killed (well wounded big time) American Legion and Automotive Baseball. But if the UBA keeps performing like it has the last 2-3 years with a less than stellar summer league, many programs will come running back to American Legion--wait and see.

Sadly, many high school coaches decided to jettison their seniors and concentrate on their younger players with the UBA league. But what has happened is that the UBA is coming more and more of a disappointment and many of the high school coaches are not happy with it. Most of the parents aren't as it can be much more expensive, and let's face it, the quality of baseball is poor. Those playing American Legion are giving their all, and showing up for the games, which doesn't happen in the UBA. Several teams have forfeited in the UBA's end-of-season tournament. I don't think that happens with American Legion today and certainly not in the American Legion of years past.

But to be honest, let's see how many of the Legion players get what these kids already have. This isn't a put-down, only some facts and I am sure I have missed some from the 3 teams that should be on this list.

  • Legion Tournament
    July 28, 2008 12:07 p.m.

Lets keep the talk about the State Championship. Again, how many tournaments have the bucks, marshalls and select won this summer?? How many of the 40 or 50 kids will be playing D-1?? You would think a lot, as most of them were all-state. At least I would. Good luck to all of the Utah BB players, regardless of where they are playing summer ball.

  • to: Quit stressing -
    July 28, 2008 11:37 a.m.

Go down the rosters of the bucks, select, and marshalls and please let me know who the "who ya know" kids are. I am sure there might be a couple but most of them were all-state and scholarship kids. Am very interested in what kids off those 3 should and shouldn't have been picked. If all-state and scholarships aren't good enough stats, then tell me what criteria they should use. Would be interested in your thoughts and will look at them with an open mind.

  • Quit stressing....
    July 28, 2008 8:23 a.m.

Just because some kid is picked to be on some special team doesn't mean he is the best around. If the bucks, marshalls and select really wanted the "best" kids, they could have used stats and other qualifying date to choose these kids. The only reason some of these kids are on these teams is because of the "who ya know" roster building technique. Being on these teams does not bring any promise of success in the future. So quit stressing about it.

I think the Bucks got beat in the Ogden tournament by a Northern team. It was not by the Marshalls or the Select.

  • Any time
    July 28, 2008 8:15 a.m.

you hand pick kids from a large area to be on a team, you can't help but be successful. Legion teams are usually held to a much smaller boundary. Maybe the bucks, marshalls and select could beat some of the legion teams, but theres really no reason they even need to play each other. Each group of teams have there own goals for the summer. Legion teams are trying to win a state title, Region title then a trip to the World Series for Legion teams. The other 3 do not qualify for this activity. Their goal is to showcase each kid and hopefully get them a college scholarship or even a MLB draft pick next June. Legion teams also get noticed by scouts during the summer, but the other 3 can't win a world series no matter how bad they want to. Final score: Legion kids win this round.

  • RE: Legion
    July 28, 2008 8:08 a.m.

How have the Bucks, Marshalls and Select fared this year (out of state)?? Win any tournamnts?? You have to compare apples with apples. A hand picked team from all of the legion teams would compete with these "travel" teams. Trust me.

  • To: legion
    July 28, 2008 7:35 a.m.

I don't think the bucks, marshalls or the select are eligible to play in the state tourney. The make up of their teams do not follow the rules of the American Legion system. I could be wrong, but I don't think they are in this tourney. And because of that, each player on these teams has forfeited their opportunity to play in the state legion tourney and move on the the western regionals and maybe the world series in North Carolina.

  • legion
    July 27, 2008 10:01 p.m.

I think Legion is the best league in town but none of these teams could beat the bucks, marshalls, or select. It would be fun to watch though.

  • St. George Teams?
    July 27, 2008 7:06 a.m.

Isn't it odd that a baseball town like St. George doesn't have any teams in the state legion tourney. There are 4 high schools here now and not one of them could muster up a team to compete. There used to be a St. George Legion team that was made up from kids of the various schools. For some lame reason that team couldn't even come together this summer. As much as St. George thinks they can dominate baseball due to better weather year-round, the up north part of the state is much more organized and determined to play the game. For whatever reason, a lot of good players down here are sitting around wishing they were in this tournament. If the baseball folks here in St. George really think we are that good, then do something about.

  • BB Fan
    July 27, 2008 6:26 a.m.

Lets talk about the "legion" tournament and not the UBA. Most everyone knows they are a for profit bussiness and take care of their own. Until more schools leave there program like T-ville has Utah summer baseball will suffer. Get those "sparq" scores up and keep the $$ coming in.

  • bet ya
    July 26, 2008 9:26 p.m.

The UBA would only show the names that signed up to play, even if it was for one tournament or showcase. I am sure most kids have done something with the UBA only because the kids need the showcases to be seen and only the UBA has those kind of connections at this time. Hopefully that will change in the future. A majority of the north players weren't with the academy. The valley and south are starting to see the whole picture unless their high school coaches are somehow involved with the UBA. What would be interesting though would be how many kids the UBA actually called for on the behalf of. The "boys" - yes. The rest (majority) I would bet no. Does anyone have any thoughts or back-up on this?

  • Re: top 40
    July 26, 2008 7:40 p.m.

After this list was made in the spring, they said they would re-write it after the season is over. From this "new" list they would split up the group and play a showcase game. What ever happened to that idea? A pre-season all star list is much easier to make than a final season list. By season end was the UBA to ashamed of themselves to pull that off? I guess as long as they keep raking in the big bucks and making up lists, then that's all that matters.

  • Top 40
    July 26, 2008 6:06 p.m.

WE all know this list is a joke just look at the list then look at all the kids in the state tournament both high school and legion, you didn't see all that many kids on those lists, those boys proved there tallent not on some list that goes off how much money you contribute to the all mighty academy, they proved it on the field where it really matters

Chad Shephard did a good job with the marshalls but don't get carried away with Buck Thomas. He had nothing but problems with many teams and their coach's. Knows the game but not afraid to tell and act like he knows the game better than he does. Arrogant to the nines. The bucks and select were better coached than the marshalls were.

Why is there no news paper coverage of either league , no standings no scores, no articles . The tribune had nothing at least the DNews had the legion tournament pairings and times . I guess no one really cares about summer baseball any more in the state of Utah its to bad because there is good baseball being played . until the UBA came along you got a true state champion in American Legion Baseball , There is another league that competes with the UBA that is the varsity prep league they usally have around 12 teams every year , and it is not costing the kids parents an arm an a leg to play in this league

  • re: re marshalls
    July 26, 2008 12:18 p.m.

I agree with your assessment of the bucks and marshalls but you should have added the select to the mix. Each kid on the select has signed scholarships as well except for the 2 junior pitchers and they certainly will. Funny how none of the best seniors of last year were playing in the UBA collegiate league. Must tell us something.

  • RE: Marshalls
    July 26, 2008 11:23 a.m.

The difference between the UBA,the American Legion tournament, The Utah Select and the Utah Marshalls/Utah Bucks program is that the college and professional scouts that attend the games are actually paying attention to all the players in the Utah Marshalls/Utah Bucks roster. Chad Shephard and Buck Thomas know baseball and baseball people - they have done a great job. They are the truly respected by baseball people around the country. I don't think the UBA can make that statement. ALL the players in the program will get the chance to have their schooling paid for and play the game they love at the next level. The UBA can NOT say that.

Big money to the UBA and no return on investment - don't need to read Investment for Dummies to know that this is a great time to run from them. Sinking Ship. I hope someone from the Utah Marshalls takes the reigns if the UBA does the swirlly - I have been to many games of theirs and it is ran unbelievably well. July 25, 2008 4:49 p.m.

The UBA is a total joke and only care about money, not the kids, of course, unless you are one of the boys. The funny thing is that outside of Utah, no one knows about the academy unless they are friends of the owners. Umpires late to games, more money, no ending tourney causing kids to just go through the motions, unorganized, and geared to those that can afford, not necessarily being able to really play. Take the top 40 list as an example. Everyone knows that is a funny list. Am going to watch the Legion tourney, not because they are better players, but the politics is left out of the equation. Showcase your own boys and you will be better off, trust me.

  • UBA = $$$$
    July 25, 2008 4:23 p.m.

That is all that they are about. They do nothing to help out the talent in Utah. All they do is suck up all the money, and try to make kids play only one sport so they get burned out so easy. I had 7 friends that played in the UBA jr. Olympics and one of them got a scholarship to play baseball. plenty of others did while not doing the whole Baseball Academy thing. Plus they saved a load of money. Just play legion, and play where you live. If you have talent, no matter where you live, you will get noticed and will be playing more ball after high school.

    July 25, 2008 1:33 p.m.

Isn't funny that American Legion is featured for putting on a great brand of baseball and all you ever here about is the disaster called baseball that the UBA puts out. BRING BACK AMERICAN LEGION - SAY NO TO THE UBA. Just for those interested - my son did nothing with the UBA this summer - he just went to college baseball camps and showcases - as of today - he has received scholarship offers from three universities/colleges and 3 junior colleges. Go out and show your son off if he wants to play at the next level do not wait for the money sucking UBA to help because it will never happen. SAY NO TO THE UBA. Also, I asked everyone of the coaches who offered scholarships if they cared what SPARQ score my son had and he scored high, do you know what their reply was? A few of them had no idea what a SPARQ score was and the ones that knew what SPARQ was could care less - "How does SPARQ help a player hit a curve ball?" is how one of the coaches put it. SAY NO TO UBA AND SPARQ - SAVE YOUR MONEY.
