It's BCS not BSC. Should make no difference to you anyway since your cougs won't be receiving an invitation.

  • byu all tha way!
    July 1, 2008 7:59 p.m.

if fhil steele is really that big why is he making rediculous rankings like this, he put notre dame on it! honestly, they are the most hopeless bsc team ever this year! and although he put utah on there for some reason, neither byu or utah has a difficult schedule this year, it sucks, but it's true. either team will be lucky if they get a respectable bsc bowl game

Steele is off on this one.
No other national ranking polster has the Ute's on the radar.
It would be fun to see both BYU and Utah ranked in the top 20 above the majority of BCS big wigs come AP rankings and six or so weeks into the season when the BCS rankings come out.
Having BYU and Utah ranked in the top 10 come seasons end would be awesome.

Doesn't matter who makes the poll...they're all worthless until about 2 months into the season.

The season has not even started yet and the UTES are already in your heads. They must be good this year.

    Go Utes..

  • Winning Again
    June 22, 2008 8:04 p.m.

I guess readership at the D. news and papers all over the state among the utes (cougar haters) will be up again now that the utes are ranked in a national pre-season poll. Even though two weeks ago pre-season polls meant nothing. Especially from a weak service that dared mention the cougars. Oh well, enjoy the paper until another weak publication recognizes the cougars and the "possibility" of a great season. The season has not even started yet and the cougars are already in your heads. They must be winning again.

  • re:Palls
    June 22, 2008 12:18 p.m.

I am a cougar fan who agrees with your observations.

    All those teams will lose.
I just have not seen a consistant Utah team that will beat "All" those teams.

Utah will come into the BYU with a home game that will make them "Bowl Eligible", and another "Must Win BYU Bowl" for Kyle.

He's big enough to take responsibility now, and Dr. Hill really cannot be totally happywith Kyle effort so far.

    Good luck Utah.

I am a big time Ute fan and the only team that worries me this year is Wyoming. Michigan will be interesting but the Utes will come out on top. UNLY will get beat down no problem. USU will lose. Air Force will lose. Weber State will lose. Oregon State will get beat down. Wyoming, I hope the coaches will be ready this year. Colorado State will lose. New Mexico will be another interesting game but the Utes will come out on top. TCU will lose. San Diego State will lose. After two years of stupid mistake the Utes will come out on top. It is that easy..

    Go UTES

  • RE:Coug Fan

We Utes keep trying to be ranked when we play you, but it's those darned losses.

Seriously, in what world is Utah ranked ahead of BYU? Using what logic?

Or does this all come from a land of Schrute Dollars, Stanley Nickles, Unicorns and Leprechauns???

    Sure, there, go Utes...

(I hope we don't play UNLV, and Michigan at Michigan, and I know that the Wyoming team never does hold a grudge.

Yep, we can do it, even without our Urban Legend.

I love to listen to you BYU fans cry over this little poll. All you do is cry, cry, cry. It must be tough living in Happy Valley.

  • Who is Phil Steele?
    June 21, 2008 2:32 p.m.

Who is Phil Steele and who cares what he has to say?? All I know is that on all of the pre-season polls that count (like the USA today poll, the coaches poll, the BCS standings) BYU is ranked 14th and Utah is no where to be seen.
So Utah fans, enjoy your moment in the spotlight. It isn't going to last for very long. I can't wait until football season starts!!! GO COUGS!!

    June 21, 2008 11:19 a.m.

Byu could go 11 - 0. As long as they dont run into a powerhouse like Tulsa.

  • Yes Florida #1 !!
    June 21, 2008 11:18 a.m.

They have the Heisman trophy winner and one of the best coaches in the Nation.

Just because BYU fans hate Meyer so much they can't see him winning a title. I went to a BYU game a few years ago when the Crowd cheered when Florida lost. You guys are jealous, and upset that he beat your cougars down!! I hate to break it to you, but he won the National Title 2 years ago, and several think they'll win it this year.

He is a better coach than Bronco!!! (Who do you honestly think would win in a national poll?). If you took a nationwide poll of football fans Meyer would win 90% to 10%.

Meyer has also done more than Level Edwards.
Edwards 1 National Title 0 BCS wins 7-13-1 in Bowl games (29 years)
Meyer 1 National Title 2 BCS wins 4-1 in bowl games (7 years)

Sorry BYU fans, the guys you worship (Bronco and Edwards) are not as good as Meyer.

  • BYU...
    June 21, 2008 11:04 a.m.

I think it is funny how BYU fans are making fun of Utah for the UNLV game.
How about BYU's effort in both games against UCLA!?!
Scoring 17 points in each game. The Utes scored 44 in one game against the Bruins, and didn't need a lucky break (a blocked FG), to beat the 5th best team in the Pac 10 in a bowl game.
How about BYU win some non-conference games this year!!

I don't remember the last time BYU lost less than 2 non-conference games in a year!!!!!

  • Florida #1?

Here we go, more unlv talk. It was probably a good thing with what happened last year at unlv, they put up 8 wins in 9 games after that. Now they know not to look by teams like that anymore, which means utah might put up 50 this year against them. One thing I know about kyle and the utes is dont guarantee wins or talk trash after the game because what goes around comes around. There will be no mercy against unlv this year, plus its the first home game, Sanford and his rebels will be down by at least 35 at half time.

  • UVU
    June 20, 2008 2:27 p.m.

That is true why do BYU fans pretend to like Utah on these things. Don't worry Utah we here at UVU are getting pretty sick of BYU students and fans acting like they're superior to everyone also.

    June 20, 2008 2:25 p.m.

Everyone you don't need to pretend to be a Utah fan just so you can rip on them. Especially when most of the comments on this comment board are ripping on them.

Who's fans are the pompous ones?

  • another comment
    June 20, 2008 1:23 p.m.

Does all this talk even matter? BYU can never beat any of there good non-conference opponents so they'll already be knocked out of BCS consideration before Septembers is over.
Then after this all the coug fan's will return home and think about the glory days when they competed with Army and Navy to win the national championship in the coaches poll and was left looking up in the AP poll. Way back before any of their players were born.
Then Bronco Mendahall will return to the locker room and give some sort of conference talk to his players about how BYU had tradition when his father was alive and how if you live right you'll never have any problems.

  • Game Time / Paper Time
    June 20, 2008 1:10 p.m.

    The utes are paper tigers.

BYU proves it on the field.

    W=W, L=L.
Utes just talk and talk and talk.

I am a self repsecting 48 yer old male that likes both teams.

If the Ute would shut up and produce, they earn respect.

If you win, you can say what you want, ask Collie, Pierce, Allen, Garnett.Tiger.

If you lose, shut up, you didn'y earn respect.

Ask Kobe, Whit, Dr. Hill, Mediate. Kobe can't do it without Shaq. Talked the came, couldn't produce.

I like Utes. I hate whimy, pompous, idioditic, arrogant Ute fans.

Many of us are men, manny of us are atletes.

Ute fans, ern you respect and the board is yours.

    Otherwise, get off and practice.

  • Seriously?
    June 20, 2008 10:06 a.m.

Yes BYU is returning most of last years EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE?

EXPLOSIVE? Total offense ranked 28th in Div 1
EXPLOSIVE? Total points ranked 68th in Div 1

The REAL part of last years team was the EXPLOSIVE DEFENSE

Total Defense Ranked 7th in Div 1
Points allowed Ranked 14th in Div 1

Now, if this years offense can improve to match the rankings of last years defense, the Cougars just might have something to brag about next January.

  • Jordan
    June 20, 2008 9:32 a.m.

This is ridiculous. The utes ahead of the cougars? This makes absolutely no sense, considering the cougars are returning 10 of their 11 offensive starters.
here is my preseason rankings, means nothing but its personal satisfaction :)
    BYU- 14

Utah has a good team, but by no means is it good enough to be ranked ahead of the cougars, especially considering all the factors. I think I will stick to the reliable sources on this one, not some yahoo who thinks he knows what he is talking about.

"BCS is what every cougar fan dreams of, something the Utes already accomplished."

No, the National Championship is, something the Cougars already accomplished. Also, only eight years separated BYU's #5 ranking from Utah's #5 ranking. And BYU actually had to beat a good team in their bowl game to get that.

Frankly, neither team should be speaking too loudly about a BCS berth when both teams have to win several tough games before that is even a consideration. I don't believe either team will be undefeated in November.

  • You can't even
    June 19, 2008 11:46 p.m.

tailgate at BYU!! what's up with that? YOu shouldn't be ranked if showing up 5 minutes before the game is the norm, and you can't tailgate or anything. I traveled to see the BYU USC game a couple years ago and was kinda bummed with the rules there.

  • Why are
    June 19, 2008 11:37 p.m.

two Mtn. WORST teams ranked in the top 25 when they haven't done anything last year. Their conference is one of the worst conferences in the nation and they play a weak pre-seaon. Someone explain.

  • Rich
    June 19, 2008 10:57 p.m.

Pre-season polls mean absolutely nothing. They're more inaccurate than Jeanne Dixon's predictions. However, there is one good thing about getting ranked to start the season. You actually have a chance to make the BCS at the end of the season if you win all your games. Since Utah has to play BYU in November, we know that only one team can possibly win all its games. It could be Utah; it could be BYU. Both teams have excellent coaches and often produce stunning wins even though they typically cannot recruit players as big and fast as those recruited in, say, the Big 10 or the Pac 10.
Good luck to all the Utah teams in the coming season. The better they do, and the better all the teams in their conferences do against teams from other conferences, the better chances two or more local teams will be ranked in next year's pre-season poll.

  • Question?
    June 19, 2008 10:48 p.m.

Hi, I have lived in Utah now for a few years and have really enjoyed the BYU Utah rivalry and the last two games were great. But I am wondering why BYU students are called Zoobs? I am not trying to fan the flames but am actually curious. Thanks

  • Ranked?
    June 19, 2008 10:15 p.m.

Has byu ever beaten a ranked oppenent?

Utah/Kyle has two: Georgia Tech #21 and UCLA #11

  • RE: Now
    June 19, 2008 9:55 p.m.

You failed to mention that Bronco has a .500 record against non-conference oppenents, but two of those games where against 1AA. If byu didn't have a "watered down" schedule he would be under .500 against non-conference teams.

Has Bronco ever won on the road against non-conference teams? That powerhouse Tulsa seams to be getting in the way. At least byu might beat Utah State and get that road win.

FYI: Since 2003 Utah is 10-4 against BCS teams, BYU is 5-11 during that same time.

AS for UNLV, Utah lost to them for the first time is 17 years! Byu on the other hand is 4-2 against them the past 6 attempts and just a few years ago byu lost at home against UNLV, at home!

By the way congrats on winning the Vegas bowl against a 6-5 team with NO Coach, NO QB, NO RB by one and being favored by 11 points. If I remember: Hall: "We need to make a statement for the BCS next year!".....right!!!

AS for the NCAA tournament: One and done, byu in 100 years hasn't gotten to the sweet 16, see BYU.

  • Re: Now
    June 19, 2008 8:11 p.m.

"Hey, congrats on what BYU accomplished in 1920? Possibly you should live in the now...."

Since Bronco and Kyle became the current head coaches:

BYU is 2-1 vs. Utah, 28-10 (6-6, 11-2, 11-2) overall, with 2 MWC Championships, 2-1 in bowls (all vs. BCS teams)

Utah is 1-2 vs. BYU, 24-14 (7-5, 8-5, 9-4) overall, with NO MWC Championships, 3-0 in bowls (only one vs. a BCS team)

    ...and Then

The 1974 Fiesta Bowl would have been a great game except for the Oklahoma State headhunters who intentionally knocked Gary Shiede out of the game with two very questionable blindside hits early in the game.

I'll trade the disappointment of losing the first 4 bowl games for the excitement of winning the 1980, 1983 and 1984 Holiday Bowls anyday.

For one of the biggest comebacks in NCAA bowl history, see BYU.

For one of the most dramatic game-ending plays in the NCAA tournament history, see BYU.

Both, by the way, happened during the same school year, 1980-81.

But if we are going back...we all who know leads the series, and we all know who has the better winning percentage in bowl games. Maybe you should g back t the 1974 Fiesta bowl, sounds like that was a real treat of a game...but hey at least you can be proud.

  • Re: Bowl Records
    June 19, 2008 7:06 p.m.

Nobody is arguing which is more fun: watching your team in a bowl game or not watching your team in a bowl game.

It says a lot about BYU's program that they could win the WAC so frequently but lose bowl games so frequently too. That is why BYU has the reputation of being a paper tiger; their records during the 70s and 80s looked far more impressive than the teams actually were thanks to playing a bunch of creampuffs. It's also one of the many reasons nobody likes BYU, they would inflate their record in a weak conference and say "why can't we get any respect?"

YOU HAVE TO EARN IT! And losing to AZ, Tulsa, BC, and UCLA won't give you any.

FYI: Since 2003 Utah is 10-4 against BCS teams, BYU is 5-11 during that same time.

Bowl games used to be a reward for having a great season.

    Utah 1963-1991 (0-0-0):

As a BYU fan it was so much more fun watching Jim McMahon leading BYU to their Miracle Bowl finish, watching Steve Young CATCH the winning touchdown pass against Missouri, and watching Robbie Bosco on a gimpy knee lead BYU to a National Championship.

Even some of the losses, to Oklahoma State (1974), Navy (1978), Indiana (1979), and Ohio State (1985), were exciting and memorable.

Watching my team play in 16 bowl games, win or lose, was head and shoulders above staying home in December watching someone else's teams play.

Hey confused. Neither the U or Y will do much with their Mickey mouse schedules playing in a 2nd rate conference.

Why is it so important that BYU bust the BCS? the Utes, Hawaii, & Boise have already done it.

The last 2 BCS winners have come from the only conference that really matters.

  • Re: Utah's bowl record
    June 19, 2008 5:39 p.m.

It's funny you should mention that Utah only started going to bowl games regularly after the system got watered down. Last I checked, BYU's bowl record since bowl games became 'watered down' is 4-7-1, Utah's is 8-3.

Even when everyone and their dog is going bowling, BYU STILL has an awful bowl record!

"I doubt many recruits are beating down Kyle's door for the chance to play in a minor bowl as a runner-up in the MWC." BYU has been the winner of the MWC two years running to play for the right to play in the prestigious Las Vegas Bowl against the fifth place Pac-10 team. NOBODY is beating down anybody's door to play in this conference. BYU did not do this conference any favors by BARELY beating a crappy UCLA team whom UTAH CRUSHED earlier in the year. In this conference UTAH, BYU, and TCU need to be solid to give credibility to this region.

Your argument is poor at best. Who cares how many bowls a team goes to if they don't win at least the majority of the ones (no matter how crappy a bowl it is) they get invited to? BYU is a great football school. There is no doubt about that. I am a Utes fan and I wish Utah had the same regular season success as BYU has had in the last 30 years. However, I would still rather have Utah's bowl record. What is the point of getting as far as you can go and not winning it all? I loved Lavell Edwards (how can you not) but BYU's yearly tradition was win the WAC, which he did many times, and get clobbered in the Holiday Bowl. It is frustrating be a fan in this state. I am also a very dissapointed Jazz fan (twenty years of my life cheering for one ring).

  • Re: Utah's bowl record
    June 19, 2008 3:56 p.m.

Utah couldn't even qualify for a bowl until the bowl system became so watered down that half of the Division 1A teams were able to bowling.

    Utah bowls:

Pre-1992 -- 2 bowls (1939, 1964); Utah went 28 years in a row (from 1964 to 1992) without even going to a bowl; they only went to 2 bowls in their first 100 years of football.

1992-2007 -- 11 bowls, almost all of them against unranked opponents:

Bowl -- Final Record -- Opponent
    Sun -- (6-1) -- New Mexico
    Liberty -- (9-2) -- West Virginia
    Copper -- (6-6) -- Washington St.
    Freedom -- (7-6) -- USC
    Freedom -- (10-2) -- Arizona
    Copper -- (8-4) -- Wisconsin
    Las Vegas -- (9-3) -- Fresno State
    Las Vegas -- (8-4) -- USC
    Liberty -- (10-2) -- Southern Miss
    Fiesta -- (12-0) -- Pittsburgh
    Emerald -- (7-5) -- Georgia Tech
    Armed Forces -- (8-5) -- Tulsa
    Poinsettia -- (9-4) -- Navy

I doubt many recruits are beating down Kyle's door for the chance to play in a minor bowl as a runner-up in the MWC.

How ignorant are you? Do you not remember in the carousel of #2's last year that South Florida was one of those teams? Remember this name: Matt Grothe. He is the QB. He passed for over 2600 yards and rushed for nearly 900. If it wasn't for being sacked a few times he would have been over a thousand yards. This team has only been playing D1 ball since 2000 and they are already competetively playing in a BCS conference and S. Florida (yes, not the Gators) could be contending for a National Title this year. I am a Utes fan. I can only dream of a day when teams from this region will be given the same shot.

P.S. Where did I get the background information? PHIL STEELE's Magazine. I provided my opinions, the mag provided the facts.

Any preseason ranking that has Georgia behind South Florida (not Florida, but South Florida) has to be ignored.

  • Re: Re returning starters
    June 19, 2008 2:21 p.m.

"and another bowl win"? hah you kidding me? They lost like 6 in a row. BYU sucks in post season. That's why all the best out of state players (non-mormon) go to Utah.

  • Re; returning starters
    June 19, 2008 1:11 p.m.

"BYU had the #1 Defense last year and still lost 2 games and could have lost the UCLA/TCU/utah games and could have had 5 losses!"

BYU also "could have" gone undefeated!!! A couple of breaks in BYU's favor in each game "could have" given BYU a win in both games they lost.

In hindsight, the only thing that counts is what they actually did, which is 11-2, back-to-back MWC championships, and another bowl win.

Phil Steele is welcome to his opinion, but he's way out of sync with the concensus of most of the other preseason polls that have BYU ranked around 15th, and Utah and Notre Dame not listed.

Personnally, I think Utah should be in the top 25, somewhere between 20 and 25.

Jamie Hill will have BYU's defense well prepared with players who, although they didn't start last year, had significant game experience as backups.

  • 3 returning starters?
    June 19, 2008 12:21 p.m.

Only 3 returning starters on Defense! That is why he put Utah ahead of byu.

Byu had the #1 Defense last year and still lost 2 games and could have lost the UCLA/TCU/Utah games and could have had 5 losses! They only had 2, but with only 3 returning starters on the defense are they going to outscore their oppenents? Probably not, see: tulsa '07 and TCU '05! 50+points and a still lose!

Byu struggles when they face good defenses like UCLA, which held them to 17 points twice, Utah which held them to 17 points, and Arizona which held them to 20! Basically that "great offense" can and has been stopped!

Byu's defense won them those games but this year when they only have 3 coming back, and one injury away from losing one of them, WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO? THAT IS WHY PHIL STEELE PUT UTAH AHEAD OF THEM!

Utah has 16 of 22 starters coming back on their team and 17/22 if Casteel is counted. They the best special teams in the conference and probably the country.

  • Re: Locker
    June 19, 2008 12:07 p.m.

"Please do not confuse any QB performance in the MWC with Locker's in the PAC 10."

A good passing QB, whether in the PAC 10, MWC, SEC, or any other conference should have at least 60% pass completions, 200+ yds/gm, and a 2-1 Touchdowns to Interceptions ratio.

Locker may be dangerous as a runner playing quarterback, but his credentials as a passer, based on his first season, are highly suspect.

A 62.8 QB rating won't even get Locker into the top 50 in QB rating, and certainly won't have many football fans around the country declaring him to be the #1 quarterback.

It sounds to me like BYU will be preparing for an Air Force style triple-option attack early this coming season.

  • 2008 College Football Preseason
    June 19, 2008 10:04 a.m.

A look at the early projections for 2008.

Gregory Cox of TheFootballExpert.com has compiled top 25 polls from The Sporting News (Matt Hayes), Rivals.com, ESPN (Mark Schlabach), CNN/SI (Stewart Mandel), and College Football News. Once a team is mentioned, they are in. If they are not included in someone elses poll, he gives them a rank of 30 and then averages out the results.

19 teams, including BYU, were listed by all five sources.

    #1 Georgia
    #2 Oklahoma
    #3 USC
    #4 Ohio State
    #5 Missouri
    #6 Florida
    #7 LSU
    #8 West Virginia
    #9 Texas
    #10 Wisconsin

#17 BYU: High (12) Low (22) Average (17.40): This is your BCS buster out of the Mountain West. If they can handle a pair of Pac-10 teams (at Washington. vs. UCLA) in their OOC they might go undefeated.

    #24 Michigan
    #27 Fresno State
    #32 Oregon State

    No mention of Utah. :(

    or Notre Dame.

hmmm, also, no mention of Steeles most highly respected preseason poll.

First of all, polls such as SI and USAToday as well as the AP coaches poll are the only ones anyone pays attention to. Secondly, pre-season rakings are bogus. Notre Dame was ranking high a couple of years ago in the preseason and ended up with a losing record that year with no bowl game.I guess its nice to be recognized but these pre-season polls are just wild guesses at best.

  • Locker vs AF QB?
    June 19, 2008 9:43 a.m.

Please do not confuse any QB performance in the MWC with Locker's in the PAC 10. Both, UCLA and Washington will field much improved teams than took the field last season.

BYU will be extremely lucky to be 2-1 after the first three games!! and some of games gets even harderin the stretch. The sucess of the BYU season depends on quickly developing the outside pass rush and cover corners/Dbacks. The cougars have the talent to win'em all, if they can just get the right combination of the field from the start.

Yes notre dame was bad last year, but i would not be suprised if they turned it around this year. The past two seasons they have had one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, and last year everyone was young. They have the potential to be good. More likely to lose to a D1AA team this year is BYU. Kewg fans keep mentioning 'how tough' they are, and they were ranked last year. BYU could very possibly come out taking them lightly, then, BAM! Right in the kisser. Panthers 35 - Kewgars 32

    June 19, 2008 7:35 a.m.

Utah fans can squawk all they want about Bronco's cumbaya sessions, about his being "Fully Invested", and his "Quest for Perfection", but, what they can't dispute is Bronco's success in rebuilding the BYU football program.

The dramatic improvement from the 3 losing seasons immediately preceding Bronco taking over the reins:

    5-6, 5-6, 5-7 (15-19, 44%, no MWC championships)

    to Bronco's first 3 seasons

    6-6, 11-2, 11-2 (28-10, 74%, 2 MWC championships)

    is indisputable.

After back-to-back top 20 finishes, and with most of their key offensive players returning, no objective fan can seriously question the legitimacy of BYU being included in pre-season top 25 lists.

    Compare Bronco's record with Kyle's,

    5-6, 10-2, 12-0 (27-8, 77%, 2 MWC championships)

    7-5, 8-5, 9-4 (24-14, 63%, no MWC championships)

and it's easy to see why an objective fan could question the legitimacy of Utah being included in pre-season top 25 lists.

I think both teams are legitimate top 25 teams. BYU should be about 15th in the polls. Utah should be lower in the polls, around 23rd, until they've proven that they can win more consistently throughtout the entire season.

The utes are ranked ahead of BYU in a 'Pre-season' poll. Gee, that is impressive when you consider the fact that Utah is considered Only a slightly better-than average-team that consistently wins seven or eight games. And take into consideration that BYU has conscecutive championships in the conference and the utes have none..............what is the precedent for the the utes so-called higher ranking.

Oh that's right, the utes will sneak up on Michigan like Appalachian State, and shock the world of college football again? NOT.

Oh, and one more thing, the real shock to the world of college football will come the weekend the utes play Weber. Gee you would think the utes will win this one by 50 or more. The utes and their tougher schedule than BYU? The utes embarrassingly falls from the grace of the college football world.......

    Weber 13 Utah 12

Your season comes to an end(at least in terms of any great expectation)and never recovers from the disgrace this vaunted Ute team brings on the Mountain West...as it won't matter what you do the rest of the season. There is No Meltdown of BYU fans. The yewts were talked about very nicely by ESPN last season as one of the better 8-4 or 9-3 type teams in the country.

Coach Kyle hasn't won a MWC championship yet while BYU has won two in a row. BYU has posted conscecutive 11-2 seasons while the utes have been an above AVERAGE team.

Ute fans begged the football gods last season to bring disaster down on BYU hoping for some midseason
meltdown that NEVER occured. And when the utes failed to play an entire game of defense against the Cougars, they lost AGAIN in the last minute.

Yeah the utes may bring a more balanced team back and BYU has gotten a lot of Hype about their team, but no one will know for certain as to what happens until each team steps on the field.

Ute fans hoping Michigan overlooks them like App. State? No way in......well you know? Coach Rod will have the Wolverines more than ready to play......

LOL, we'll see how long the red team's top 25 ranking lasts. My guess is that pollsters will forgive the loss at Michigan but that the home loss to UNLV will be too much to stay ranked.

Meanwhile, it's not all good for the mighty Cougars in blue, since they appear to have a season where they will be favored in every game. In other words, anything less than undefeated will not be good enough, and even an undefeated season probably won't get much respect.

Ute fans enjoy this while it lasts. By the way... Just cause Utah plays in Michigan doesn't mean Utah has the tougher schedule. Wait a minute... Weber St. is one of the toughest around. Might just get App. Stated. Knowing Kyle... That'll happen. On top of Weber -- there's that other team that whooped ya... UNLV.

BYU plays the tougher schedule. Playing at Utah, TCU, and Washington(they're tougher than what others lead on). With UCLA at home and they can't be taken lightly no matter what.

Utah does do well with OOC games but for some reason can't do it with Conf. games.

There's a very good chance that both teams will end up in the top 25. In all reality... BYU will start the season in the top 25 and Utah somewhere in the 30's.

Athlon sports is a lot more reliable than Philly boy who isn't accurate -- at that much. Athlon has been very close on their predictions on the past years.

This guy has Notre Dame ranked 19th. What?!!! Did he spend last fall with his head buried in sand? Sure, ND may be better this year than they were last year, but that's only because they couldn't be any worse. Any worse and they would have been dropped to Div 1-AA (or whatever it's called now). They'll be lucky to win 5 games this year.

He also has USF ranked #8. What?!!!! That's even crazier than either BYU's or Utah's ranking here.

He has Georgia ranked #9 (behind USF...). Did he turn on his TV after mid-October? Georgia was playing the best football in the country by the end of the year, and they have a ton of players back.

And he has West Virginia #6...last time I checked WVU lost their head coach and their entire program is in turmoil. They still have talent, but #6 (and 3 spots ahead of Georgia)...not this year.

So before anyone gets too excited about BYU or Utah's ranking in this "poll," it looks to me like the guy who created this thing is a clown.

For Utah to Beat Michigan...you will be suprised what Rodriguez and, maybe more importantly, Mike Barwis (new strength/conditioning coach) will be able to do with the talent at UofM. I understand people are saying that M will be breaking in new system, lost players etc.,etc. There is no way that Rodriguez will allow his tenure at M to open up with a loss to Utah. Michigan has ten times the talent Utah has even without Justin Boren...the only player who transfered to OSUck, who by all accounts was a lazy hack that couldn't cut Barwis' workouts. Michigan will have an excellent D that will destroy the Utah offense...see you August 30th?

They should just dress up like Ohio State. Michigan will just roll and submit, just like they have during 6 out of the 7 last years.

Michigan sucks. Even more so under Rodriguez. Even more so considering all their best players just jumped ship to go to Ohio State.

  • Come on Fans, or Players?
    June 18, 2008 8:13 p.m.

I have a life so I only read the first 10-15 comments, but I read a lot of "we (didn't know you were on the team) did x and y in the last couple of years" from Cougar fans. There is a mantra in finance, that applies to football, that you should learn. It goes like this "past performance does not indicate future results." What the Cougars have done in the past two years doesn't mean anything about football played this coming season.

The Utes are playing a Michigan team that has a new coach, with a completely new system. They looked horrible in their Spring game. They don't have the players to run the spread. I'm an alum of Utah and OSU. I can't wait to see Michigan go down to my two teams in the same year.

The rest of the tough Ute games are at home. They probably have a better shot at a BCS game this year than the Cougars. The sad reality is that if either team loses even one game they will play some bottom -dweller PAC 10 team that hopefully has a winning record.

  • Can't beat UNLV???
    June 18, 2008 7:45 p.m.

Allow me to remind all the obsessive-compulsive zoobies who can't seem to repeat Utah's ONE loss to the Rebels often enough (yes, I know not all Y fans are like that), that it was only a few short years ago that the TDS was losing to UNLV

October 8, 2004 UNLV 24, BYU 20 (one of only two UNLV victories that year)
    October 19, 2002 UNLV 24, BYU 3

  • . . . We shall see cont. . . .
    June 18, 2008 7:37 p.m.

. . . . . . BYU, however, has many reasons to believe they will not win as many games as Utah.

They return 12 starters, only 3 on defense; play at Washington, at TCU on a short week, and at Utah after facing the Air force option; they were very fortunate not to lose key players to injury last year, will they be so fortunate this year?; their best blocking back, Tonga, is off the team; and UCLA & Utah State have bye-weeks before they play BYU.

BYU will struggle to get to 9 or 10 wins this year.

  • Impartial
    June 18, 2008 7:37 p.m.

Objectively, I have a hard time distinguishing between which schedule is more difficult, but although I'd like each teams fans to stop crying about it, I don't have any unreasonable expectation that they will.

For what it's worth, Phil Steele says BYU has the more difficult schedule, but looking at the teams directly:
Worst game (Adv. BYU with N. Iowa over Weber St)
Best non-conference road game (Adv. Utah with Michigan over Washington)
Best non-conference home game (Adv. BYU with UCLA over Oregon State)
Wyoming (Adv. Utah with road vs. home)
TCU (Adv. BYU with road vs. home)
New Mexico (Adv. Utah with road vs. home)
CSU (Adv. BYU with road vs. home)
SDSU (Adv. Utah with road vs. home)
Utah State, UNLV and Air Force - Draw
The only distinguishing factor will be who has to play the better competition in the rivalry game. Of course, based on the outcome of that game, no one will care who had a more difficult schedule.

  • We shall see . . . . .
    June 18, 2008 7:35 p.m.

I will bet that this poll is closer to the final AP and Coaches polls from top to bottom than any other pre-season magazine out there.

In fact, it will be closer than any of the people commenting here could do.

Stop looking only at last years win totals as a predictor for this seasons rankings. There are other factors to consider: number of returning starters, which starters return, who will be back from injury, strength of schedule, when and where a teams toughest games will be played, etc.

Utah returns 16 starters from a team that won 9 games last year; they get Casteel and Asiata back from injury; Brian Johnson should be healthy this year; they play Oregon State, TCU, and BYU at home, they get extra time to prepare for Wyo and SDSU; Weber State and Utah State are on the schedule; and Utah has a bye before they play New Mexico.

There are many reasons to believe Utah will win 10 or more games this year.

  • We're all the same
    June 18, 2008 7:15 p.m.

I think it's hilarious that many of the Ute fans think they can stereotype all BYU fans based on those who write comments on a newspaper comment board.
It's even funnier when they think they wouldn't react the same way given the same situation. Look at Utah fans' response to the Athalon rankings and our own response to the Phil Steele rankings.
But let's not forget that Cougar fans can be the same way. Because, hey, we're all the same. Some of us just cheer for an inferior school. Just kidding.

Utah has had a great year once in the past 40 (Most Cougar fans I know respected the team for their efforts "THAT" year) and your coach had smoke coming off his sneakers as he was heading out of town faster than anyone on your defensive squad.

    Returning QB???

Dude, your back-up quarterback is better than your starting quarterback.

Beside that, wasn't he injured part of the season last year with the same degree shoulder separation that Max Hall had when Max Hall led the Cougars past your Utes last year. Where is the heart?

The list that "goes on and on"... Does that list include the same defense that "Frank the Tank" so abused at UNLV in that SHUTOUT game, that the UNLV coaches admitted to the paper they couldn't stop laughing? (Isn't your defense led by Captain Michael Scott and his Assistant to the Regional Captain Dwight Schrute?)

I agree with many Ute posters (and even senile Lou Holtz) that the Utes "might" have the better athletes. Just no heart, coherent fans, and they have poor coaching at best.

Face it, until your "defensive" Head Coach learns how to give a motivational speech that doesn't begin with "Our backs are against the wall, we've lost three straight, time to start playing" Ute fans shouldn't be concerned about "B Y Who fans sounding like idiots."

    June 18, 2008 4:30 p.m.

I am torn with these rankings. I am a huge Ute fan and Steele is a legitimate predictor of these games, but I have some issues with the rankings. I am glad to see the Utes are ranked, 14 is a little questionable even if I do think they will be great this season. As proof, you see Clemson in the top 5 and Notre Dame on the list. We all know that ND was terrible last year. This is another reason that I am torn. It is hard to see ND on the list, but at the same time hard to imagine that ND could ever not be in the top ten with all of the recruiting they are capable of.
BYU will be great, but the defense is going to be a bigger issue than you expect. I think the hardest thing will be to replace Kehl who I saw as the leader of the team. Your kicking game will be much improved and will probably add around 6 ppg to the average though.
I can't wait for the season to start, so that we can actually have some substance to the arguments.

The difference is 'Utah by 5' was popularized by a local radio commentator. It has become a way to identify yourself as a Ute fan.

Do you hear Ute fans repeatedly saying '34-31' anymore? No, that one-liner died within months of the second victory by that score even though it had more of a leg to stand on than either of BYU's current one liners. Sure, it lived on in the commercials for quite a while, but that was not because of Ute fans.

I'm actually ok with '4th and 18' but to go back to Harline is lame.

As a Ute fan, I think that 14th is a bit high. I do not put too much stock in preseason rankings anyway, but what else are we going to argue about now? Major League Soccer?

A number of people have mentioned Notre Dame - I think they are going to be much better. They have most everyone back, an easier schedule, and a stellar recruiting class.

I'm a bit nervous about Utah's defensive line, but otherwise the starters all back, plus Asiata who would have been a starter.

As for the team down south - I respect the fact that they have found walk-ons to fill in holes in their defense, but they may not always be that fortunate. It is a bit unrealistic to talk like replacing eight starters on defense is no problem whatsoever. They will have a formidable offense though, which should concern every opponent.

I'm looking forward to another fun season. Go Utes!

I think everyone needs to relax just a bit. This afterall is a preseason poll. I've noticed in the past that usually preseason polls favor teams which finished strong the previous year. There will be surprises. Maybe the Cougs and the Utes will fall on their faces. Maybe they'll both be top 10 material. The games will be played and we'll all find out how good the teams will be. This much we know for sure. College football starts in a little more than 2 months. Utah has a decent shot at beating Michigan in the big house. Coming from Southern Cal. we hear more pub. about BYU than Utah. A couple years ago it was all about Utah and who they would play in the BCS (that team deserved better than Pitt.!) But since then we have heard nothing about Utah. BYU gets more pub.

    June 18, 2008 3:22 p.m.

Actually Phil Steel's preseason publication is the Bible of College Football. Sorry. He is incredibly acurate in his preseason projections. Since 2004 he has done a section called going up. In that he predicts what teams will have the same or better record in the upcoming season. In the past 4 seasons he has put 42 teams on that list and 34 of them of matched or improved their records. Thats pretty darn accurate. Utah is on that list this year. That is very reasuring.

I personally think pre-season polls are meaningless. However, I love that BYU fans are telling Phil Steele that he is some kind of idiot. They all of course pubish a preseaon college football poll that is widely read and respected by millions of football fans across the country. They are just smarter than he is. I just think it is funny that last week when an article stated that Athalon Sports rated BYU in the top 20, it was the Utes that were bashing Athalon and claiming that they never heard of them. BYU fan defended Athalon Sports and how well respected it is. Now it goes the other way, and Ute fan acts offended that nobody has heard of Phil Steele and act like he writes the Bible of college football. It's kind of comical.

I am a BYU fan, but I can see both BYU and/or Utah very easily in the top 25 come the end of the year. It will all come down to who gets a few breaks in their favor.

Phil's own words on BYU/Utah this year:

I want to thank each of you for writing and it is nice to see Mountain West fans being among the first questions as normally in May an June most of the questions come from SEC country where College Football is king 365 days of the year.

First let me address BYU. They are a team that has dominated the MWC going 16-0 the last two years and outgaining league foes by 139.4 ypg in 2006 and 157.3 ypg in 2007. Their goal this year is to get the a BCS bowl and despite having just 3 starters back on defense they are capable of accomplishing just that! I feel they have an excellent shot at knocking off

I hope Utah beats MICH. and MICH goes on to win the Big 10.

Then, BYU beats UCLA and UCLA goes on to win the PAC 10.

Guess who plays in the Rose Bowl? Mich vs UCLA

When BYU beats Utah for the MWC title, the Cougars will be in position to play Florida for the Nat'l Championship.

  • It all can change
    June 18, 2008 2:41 p.m.

Last year proved it all can change, this college football season in the MWC will be close the biggest factors are going to be schedule and health. If Utah can stay healthy look out they are a great team and are in a better situation this year depth wise if key personel go down. ie Louks vs a big uncoordinated QB that could do nothing. BYU should be tough, Defense is a big ? but the offense should make up for a large portion of that. I hope both teams can stay healthy, although I cannot stand BYU I wish the inury bug that the Utes had last year upon no-one not even my enemy. Additionaly instead of whining about it we should all be happy because it gives the MWC credibilty now if only we could get a better TV deal life would be great. GO UTES!!!!!!!

BYU fans as an outsider from the Midwest you need to realize that nobody outside Utah is impressed with your program. Nobody remembers the fact that BYU has won two strait undefeated conference championships, (unless you live in the MWC) So before you expect respect, you need to get to a BCS game and win. People east of the Mississippi think that BYU and Utah play in the WAC. Boise State and Utah actually get more attention than BYU.

  • Realism
    June 18, 2008 2:28 p.m.

Sure, Utah has a chance of beating a rebuilding Michigan in Ann Arbor, and BYU has a good chance of getting it right against UCLA this year.

But whom among you (coug fans?) believes either of these teams could come out of a BCS conference with a ranking of 14 or 17? OK - maybe in the Big East. Big-10, PAC-10, Big-12, ACC? Slim to no chance. SEC? Never. Not with these rosters.

The rankings are a gift to a lesser conference - on all accounts.

It is a preseason poll. They're not good for much but fodder like this. You guys will be good, and we'll be good. Who cares? As far as our two teams go, all I care about is that we beat you in November, which we will.

I don't care if both teams are 11-0 or 0-11 or anything in between come late November. I just can't wait till we win and shut you pencil-neck dweebs up. Settle down, go watch your folk dance team or sing in the tunnels or whatever you dorks do down there and the season will start soon enough and this can be settled on the field.

byU ended the season ranked in the top 15, right? So, amazing how a team that got shut out (as byU fans like to point out) by one of the most terrible teams in college football (UNLV) can come within 1 minute (and 1 miracle play) of beating the top 15 team??? byU is so mighty, that they barely beat such a terrible Ute team???

No, Utah lost more player games due to injury last year than any other football team. Without injuries (knock on wood for 2008), Utah WILL be better and WILL beat byU.

There really isn't any question....Utah's defense kept them in the game with byU last year and now they will finally have an offense to go along with their top-rated defense. I'm not sure why byU fans are even opening their mouths...its a no brainer.

I say, go Utah and beat everyone that comes in your path, but watch out in November, because BYU WILL WIn. Even though I still think that this poll is a little jacked (Notre Dame? Cal?). • Re: Go MWC
    June 18, 2008 1:09 p.m.

The only real question for BYU last year was whether they would have good QB play or not. They returned most of their offensive line, Reed and Tonga, plus they were getting a proven player back in Austin Collie.

I wouldn't call that rebuilding your offense.

On defense, they have to replace 8 starters. That is a lot harder than finding a new QB and RB.

Utah beating Michigan wouldn't be "another Appalachian State." Utah is a good D1 team that is not that far removed from winning a BCS game and wins bowl games more frequently than BYU fans change their underwear. It wouldn't be a bad loss for Michigan if they were to lose.

Michigan is NOT going to allow another Appalachian State happen again this year. You can hope and dream, but they are not going to lose two season openers in a row. Utah has potential to be a great team, but before we forget, everyone last year said BYU was going to be terrible because they were going to be "rebuilding" their offense. So I guess BYU has to "rebuild" their defense this year, right? Go Cougars!!!

I am a BYU fan and think this is great to see the Utes in the top 25 as well. I would like to see TCU or another MWC school in it as also. The conference needs this kind of publicity or our conference will not get the respect from the rest of the nation. I hope the Utes go undefeated (until they play BYU). The BYU-Utah game is always better when both teams are good. The only thing pre-season polls are good for are pre-season respect - which translates to a higher ranking when you keep winning. Other than that, they are worthless. It is good to see Utah in a few top 25 polls.

In the Rivals.com pre-season rankings, last season's BCS buster, Hawaii, is ranked 81st.

Utah State -- 118 (out of 120, OUCH!)
    UNLV -- 105
    SDSU -- 102
    Colorado St -- 96
    Air Force -- 88
    New Mexico -- 56
    Washington -- 51

BYU, Utah, TCU, Wyoming, Michigan, Oregon St, and UCLA still on the clock in the countdown.

    Final poll from 2007:
    BYU (11-2) -- 13
    Utah (9-4) -- 24
    Michigan (9-4) -- 19
    Oregon St (9-4) -- 22
    UCLA (6-7) -- 47

"Utah has 20 more victories than BYU in football head to head"

Thanks to the leather helmet era, BYU's record vs Utah is 30-50-3 (not including games played in the 1890s where the teams split 3-3).

During the last 50 years, however, BYU has a 29-21 record vs Utah; and during the WAC/MWC era (since 1962), BYU is 28-18 vs Utah.

The last tie, btw, was 6-6 in 1941.

    All-time winning percentages:
    BYU (1922-2007) - 55%
    Utah (1892-2007) - 56%

Overall winning percentages since the WAC was formed in 1962:

    BYU - 65%
    Utah - 52%

    Last 10 5-5
    Last 2010-10
    Last 3019-11
    Last 4025-15
    Last 5029-21

Phil Steele is not only a respected College Football expert, but his preseason magazine is the most accurate predictor of team performance of any of the major College Football magazines including TSN, Lindy's, or Athlon.

What's more surprising is that none of the other magazines or web sites give the Utes any respect in preseason rankings. For me, the scariest game on BYU's schedule is Utah. Nothing would be better than having both teams undefeated coming in playing for the conf championship and a BCS birth.

"...Sakoda lines up for the game winning 28 yard field goal from dead center...and...DOINK!...no good!!"

Oh wait, that's already happened before. Someone needs to write a new one.

Phil Steele is just doing the best guess work he can.

BYU is returning only 11-12 starters compared to Utah's 16.
Max Hall started and finished in two BYU losses compared to Brian Johnson, with a shoulder injury, starting AND finishing with only one loss (to BYU).
Utah has A LOT more defenders returning than BYU (defense wins championships. The fact that BYU had all that offense compared to Utah's offense at that last game and Utah was STILL very much in the game shows this).

Also, this doesn't take into account last season as much as you think nor does it predict where they'll be come December. It's just Phil Steele's best guesswork.

You cougar fans are funny though. One article that doesn't have your beloved Cougars ineffably praised, and you guys go CRAZY! I can see why you guys would want to be the University of Utah. Get a Nobel Prize Laureate. or some REAL professors for that matter, not just good seminary teachers.

To hear the BYU fans tell it, you would think that BYU had beaten Utah by 30 points the past two years. Injuries were the problem for Utah last year. They are very good and very well coached. It will be a fun year to watch both teams.

    June 18, 2008 11:50 a.m.

I got the magazine and it is amazing, not just about utah but how detailed everything is with every team. It even says what kind of field they will be playing on like field turf or grass. I will not disagree and not say byu wont be good because they will, but utah will be very underrated when the season comes. I think the biggest factor this year will be how good brian johnson will be without having to try as hard as he did last year. He will have such a good supporting class around him that he will be able to let loose like he did throwing in '05. Utah's runningbacks will be amazing. Mack will hit 1,250 yards and I wouldnt be suprised if Asiata went for over 800 giving the utes over 2,000 on the ground. That will take a ton of pressure off BJ.

I'm a huge Utah fan but 14? Seriously he's delusional. We've had 3 mediocre seasons in a row where we've underachieved and suffered losses that never should have occurred. I think byu could be around 20 so their ranking isn't so unbelievable. Wow. I'm shocked by this. He must have different polls for each state to make the teams in that state feel good.

  • Get a clue BYU fans
    June 18, 2008 11:25 a.m.

Phil Steele isn't basing this poll only off of how well teams played last year. It is based off of things like SOS from last year compared to this year, returning starters, injuries from the previous year, coaching changes, etc.

Interesting note from this magazine: Utah lost 51 starts to injury last year, which was more than any other team in the country. Historically, teams don't have back-to-back seasons with that many injuries. So, basically what this says is that even in a year where the Utes were ravaged by injuries they STILL put up NINE(9) wins and they are likely going to be healthy this year meaning they should be VERY GOOD, if not flat-out GREAT.

  • @9:51
    June 18, 2008 11:17 a.m.

While BYU did have a statistical advantage in most categories, I'm curious why you think BYU's turnovers deep in their blue zone had such an affect on the game.

    Both teams had two turnovers.

BYU threw an interception at the BYU 16 yard line (that is Utah's red zone, not BYU's blue zone). Then they fumbled at the Utah 25 yard line (not in the blue zone either). Thus, BYU didn't have one turnover "deep in their blue zone".

Utah threw an interception at the BYU 5 yard line (deep in Utah's red zone). Utah's other turnover was an interception at the Utah 43 yard line.

Thus, Utah had one turnover "deep in the red zone." BYU had no turnovers "deep in their blue zone."

It's interesting that the BYU turnovers deep in their blue zone (that never happened) had such a profound affect on the outcome of the game when Utah's red zone turnover didn't.

I am a die-hard cougar, but I think most BYU fans here aren't giving Utah the respect they deserve. We squeaked out 2 wins over them in the last 2 years. It was a miracle, to say that Utah is anything but tough would be inaccurate. I would say that the rankings are a little off, but it's great to see both BYU and Utah ranked. I don't get why most BYU fans love to see Utah get beat by UNLV. The only thing that does is take credibility away from our wins over them. We should cheer our guts out for the Utes when they play everyone else, then destroy them and hate them with the hate of a thousand burning suns when we play them. That's what a good rivalry is.
I say go Utes when they play anyone else (we're all in the MWC) but GO COUGARS when they play us. Both teams will be great this year! My prediction for this year- BYU will beat UW, then dominate UCLA for 3 quarters and then collapse and give the game away in the 4th. Also, Utah will destroy Michigan, only to lose to Utah State. Go Cougars!

    June 18, 2008 10:41 a.m.

"Phil Steele is famous for the best pre-season college football review magazine. He really does his homework, on every team... not just the BCS teams"

Obviously, Phil doesn't dig as deep as he should in doing his homework because he left one of the most important factors out of his equation in evaluating BYU's defense -- Jamie Hill, who took 4 walkon DB's last year and molded them into a unit that hardly anyone noticed, because they were so solid.

They were burned by trick plays early in the season during the Tulsa game, and then shut down the trick plays the rest of the season. Utah tried at least half a dozen trick plays during their game at BYU and every single one was stopped for a loss or minimal gain.

3 starters returning, plus a solid group of backups, plus Jamie Hill = another solid defense for the coming season.

Bronco's vision of building a program, rather than a team. Preparing all of his players to be ready to play whenever they're called upon.

  • Re: go utes
    June 18, 2008 10:16 a.m.

"Outside of Provo nobody cares about BYU"

LOL. Actually, many Utes care as much or more about BYU than they do their own team.

BYU in a BCS game is not the end goal, but a stepping stone to their ultimate goal, earning a shot at another National Championship; something Utah fans can only dream of because of BYU.

If it hadn't been for BYU's 1984 13-0 National Champions and BYU's 1996 14-1 Cotton Bowl Champions, there would have been no Boise State, Utah, or Hawaii BCS busters.

  • Utah County Bubble
    June 18, 2008 10:16 a.m.

It's always a joke that BYU fans are in the "Utah County Bubble" and these cougar posts are proof. Phil Steele is famous for the best pre-season college football review magazine. He really does his homework, on every team...not just the BCS teams. His work is more objective than...say...ESPN (the MWC spurned ESPN for the MTN so we get no respect).

As a Ute fan, its great to hear the BYU fans moan over this. All summer they can't wait for another football article to pronounce themselves the MWC winner and BCS bubble buster. Looks like you've got some competition

Utah DOES have a tougher schedule this year!!!

Utah has a good portion of their offense back and most of their stellar defense back this year too. All the best players with injuries are coming back (best RB, WR, QB) so the Utes, assuming they are healthy, WILL be a force this year. I'm not predicting a MWC championship or BCS year, but the Utes will be good and have the same, or better potential, than do the Cougars.

  • hackiman
    June 18, 2008 10:13 a.m.

I think ranking the Utes that high is a little crazy... But I believe that Utah can be that good. I don't think they have earned the right to be ranked in the top 25 yet, but they can work their way up to lose to BYU.

    Go Cougs

  • Hilarious
    June 18, 2008 10:13 a.m.

Suddenly the arrogant BYU fans who claim Ute fans as merely BYU haters are now the ones doing the hating. How quickly the tables can turn.

It's funny that when a similar story came out about Athlon sports magazine pre-ranking the Cougs #14 there was a bevy of posts from BYU fans citing the indisputable legitimacy of Athlon sports magazine. But when one of its main competitors (Phil Steele) comes out with a similar poll pumping up the Utes its credibility comes into question. Life isn't made of double standards ladies and gentlemen, no matter what BYU fans would have you believe.

  • Byu Fans
    June 18, 2008 9:59 a.m.

If any of the byu fans read the Phil Steele magazine they would have notice what he said: BYU ONLY HAS 3 RETURNING STARTERS ON DEFENSE! Byu may have all of their offense returning but it is defense that wins games. Byu had the best defense in the league last year and still LOST two games and was close to losing 4/5(TCU,UCLA,Utah) games last year!

When byu plays teams with athletic defenses they struggle, ie Arizona,UTAH and UCLA(twice last year)! 17 points that "great offense" was held to against UCLA twice and Utah, but last year it didn't matter because byu defense held the other teams lower than 17 points. What happens this year when Washington/UCLA/TCU/UTAH all keep byu under 20 points? Then Washington/UCLA/TCU/UTAH all score over 30 points on one the the worst defenses in the league? =2/3/or4 loses.

That is right: "byu will outscore their opponents!" Just like Tulsa '07, TCU'05,.... it must suck to score more than 50+ points and still lose!!

For those fans who want ESPN quality comments:Todd Mcshay pick Utah to win the conference and beat byu!

    June 18, 2008 9:51 a.m.

"Yes byu won last year but if it was not for the 4th and 18 play utah would have a 9 game winning streak going into the preseason"

    If only, but...

what you're conveniently forgetting is that Utah never lead during the entire game until 1:34 left in the 4th and only held the lead for 56 sec.

BYU's turnovers deep in the blue zone and missed field goals are what kept the game close on the scoreboard.

BYU dominated in every other facet of the game, except kicking.

    First downs - BYU 21 Utah 14
    Net yards - BYU 424 Utah 244
    Rush yards - BYU 155 Utah 115
    Pass yards - BYU 269 Utah 129

Utah the better team? Definitely NOT last year and pure speculation this year.

Utah will be improved, but so will BYU.

Jamie Hill will work wonders with BYU's defense. I'm not in the least bit worried that BYU won't have a solid defense this year, together with a high-powered offense and a MUCH improved kicking game.

  • GO UTES!
    June 18, 2008 9:42 a.m.

Outside of Provo nobody cares about BYU, they finally beat a not very good UCLA team in their second try, a team that an inconsistent, not so great Utah team stomped. Both teams are going to be good going into next season, preseason polls don't mean anything (Michigan ranked #4 in 2007). The fact both teams are ranked in this poll is good for both of them. But BYU in the BCS is something they have to earn, something they've failed to do so far. I can't wait for November! GO UTES!

Utah is going down hill? Are you kidding?

Utah has won 7, 8, & 9 games the last three years. Anyone can see that Utah is trending upward. BYU on the otherhand peaked at 11-2 the last two years and with all of the players they lost on defense, they are most likely on the way down this year.

How does 8-5 sound for the cougars? Very realistic.

Probable losses at Washington, home vs. UCLA, home vs. New Mexico, at TCU on a short week, and at Utah after playing on the road at Air Force.

Utah on the other hand is very likely going to win 10+ games this year.

Their only real possible losses are at rebuilding Michigan, home to Oregon State on a short week, at New Mexico after a bye, home to TCU on a short week, and home to BYU of course. Utah is likely going to be favored in all of these games and for good reason too.

  • To Cougar faithful....
    June 18, 2008 9:37 a.m.

I am a Y fan but I think this is great. I know we will have a great year. Think of the Y/U game at the end of the year. Our schedule does lack a little strength and this game would help. Plus the Y/U rivalry has been one of the best in the nation lately and this game would further help it along. Our conference lacks respect and this ranking of #14 for the U (if true) would help. Look, if we are as good as we think we will be it should be a W. This year should be a lot of fun. I hope the U goes undefeated and lose to the Y.

I believe in anything that ruffles the Cougs' feathers is a good thing. Afterall, how can the Cougs be so great when they have downsized their level of comptetion so that the average winning percentage of the teams they'll play this year was below 50% last year. It's called pathetic scheduling. I'm sorry, when you brag that Washington is your best nonconference game and they were terrible last year, then you have issues with scheduling. That's one way to get noticed, to do what Hawaii did last year and then get their butts kicked at the end of the year (@ Rice Eccles Stadium, might I add).

Fans, you guys are ridiculous. If you don't know who Phil Steele is then you aren't a college football fan. He has an annual college football magazine that is one of the most informative. Rankings are guesses. The Celtics weren't predicted to do much before the season but they came out on top.

  • Tokolosh
    June 18, 2008 9:29 a.m.

This should create excitement that both teams are geting respect... instead the supposedly great "football fans" of BYU are showing how disconnected they are from the college football scene. If you discount this ranking because you have never heard of Phil Steele then you are a college football idiot. Preseason polls typically aren't worth much more than publicity but that publicity can go a long way if the teams start off the season backing it up. Especially when the pub comes from someone like Phil Steele. That carries a lot of weight.

Being in the top 20 is common for the Cougs. I can see why the utes are so excited, it's their first ranking all year.

By the way, 4 & 18 didn't win the game. It only got a first down. You still had a chance to win that game and you blew it. I don't know why utah thinks they are going to run into the BCS, they are the most hated team in the MWC. Every team saw onside kick when up by 40. The league is tired of you popping off when you've done no better than third place with Whitt. You run your mouth but never back it up. I.e. shut out at UNLV.

Before you ignorant cougs make yourselves look any more foolish, please google Phil Steele. You will find that his preseason magizine is one of the largest and most respected of it's kind. Out of curiosity, I researched the magazines end of year accounting statement. 11.2 million in gross revenue from the preseason football magazine alone. All of you saying that you have never heard of him are just embarrasing yourselves. Millions do read the magazine, the accounting numbers prove it. Please stop being ignorant Cougar fans.

  • Polls
    June 18, 2008 9:10 a.m.

The only polls that matter are the USA today, AP coaches poll and the Harrison poll. Because the coaches poll and the Harrison poll along with some computer polls determine the BCS poll. Do yewet fans really think that they will be ranked in either the AP poll or the Coaches preseason poll? Phil Steels polls are made to sale magazines but they will have no influence on the AP and USA today preseason polls. Utah will be an honorable mention in both of these polls at the bottom of others receiving votes and BYU will be ranked in the top 25. Utah being ranked in this poll is laughable given the UNLV game last year and looking at the ND ranking. And yes being ranked higher is an advantage if you win your games. To make the BCS you need a final ranking of 12 in the BCS. To have any shot at a national championship (which is only a pipe dream for a MWC team) a MWC team would need a preseason ranking of probably 12 or higher and still need teams ahead of them to lose. Cougars!!!

I totally agree with the ranking, utah is the better team! Yes byu won last year but if it was not for the 4th and 18 play utah would have a 9 game winning streak going into the preseason. Utah gets back basically everyone on offense, and has one of the best secondaries in the nation returning. The truth is that byu gets a great offense back, but it really hurting on defense. What happens one game if byu's offense struggles a couple games, can the defense be there to pick them up like last year? We will just have to see. . .

    June 18, 2008 7:31 a.m.

I doubt BYU or Utah should be in the top 20, but it sure is fun to see the BYU fans melt down at the thought. Actually, it doesn't surprise me that Utah is ranked ahead of BYU. They had a tough time due mainly to injuries and still came back and had a good season. If they stay healthy... well that is always the key. BYU is one injury away from the season Utah had last year. Injury or not, my guess is that BYU will start off 1-2 and that will burst the bubble right there. P.S. I am amazed that some BYU fans still haven't gotten over the fact that Whittingham turned them down. Come on guys.

  • Ignorance
    June 18, 2008 7:30 a.m.

You Cougar fans are really showing your ignorance here. Phil Steele puts out the biggest Preseason College Football Magazines in the country, that is read nation-wide by millions.

Why would Utah be ranked over BYU in these rankings? Several reasons, the first of which is the schedule. Utah has a realistic shot at beating a down Michigan team in the opener, and then has BYU and TCU at home this year.

Do you Cougar fans really think your team is that much better than a Utah team that has had a lead on you with a minute to go in the last minute for two consecutive years? Yes, the comebacks were amazing and you should enjoy them; but BYU has by no means dominated this matchup.

It also should be remembered that last year Utah lost it's best QB (BJ), best RB (Asiata), best WR (Casteel), best OL (Boone), best LB (Jianonni), and best DL (Long) for significant amounts of time to injury. Be honest with yourself zoobs; would the Cougs fair as well without Hall, Collie, Reynolds, Unga, Jorgenson, Nixon? Don't think so.

Both teams should be tough this year. Show some respect, not blind ignorance.

  • Stupid Comments
    June 18, 2008 7:28 a.m.

Look, now one knows who Phil Steele is is a fine comment, but to state that because Bronco said "(Qwest?)quest for perfection" that such will be true has got to be one of the most ignorant comments I've ever heard...

BYU has the easier schedule of the two teams which might add to such a quest, but remember getting out of the MWC undefeated will not be easy for any team this year. TCU, Utah & BYU all have good teams capable of upsetting anyone. Health is always an issue as well, look at the Utes, they had a great team last year but then lost several key players and ended up having a respectable year. So, having said that, if both teams stay healthy it will be a great game. Now before anymore of you BYU fans make such ignorant comments, please read, re-read and then post a comment that is not as ignorant as some of your hypocritical buddies.

It's nice to see a couple of MWC teams ranked in a pre-season poll, but, as I've said before, pre-season rankings are meaningless because nobody really knows how good the teams are until they've played a few games.

Until then, it's just on-paper guess work.

I would like to know who Phil Steele is and his rationale for his rankings. Maybe we can get an update from a brave soul willing to shell out a few bucks to read Phil's magazine.

I would have ranked BYU about 14th and Utah about 20th. Ohio St. should be the pre-season #1.

Love to see both Utah schools garner a little respect nationally. Hope it is that way come November.

How about a matchup with both the Cougs and the Utes undefeated and in the Top 10 battling for a place in a BCS bowl with combined victories over UCLA, Michigan, Washington, Boise, etc. The first two or three Saturdays of the season will be important for both squads. Would love to see the Utes go into the Big House and come away with a victory.

Let's see, a team that finished in the top 15 and returns 10 of 11 starters on offense should be ranked lower than a team that finished where? Please, Phil Steele shows his bias here. THere is no justifiable football reason to rank the Utes ahead of the Cougs. On paper the Utes are certainly not as strong as BYU. Oh yeah, and which team won the past two seasons in head to head competition and won the conference? Switch the two around and Phil may be on to something, but I wouldn't put the Utes in the top 25 of college football quite yet. Let's see how they do at Michigan first.

Could you imagine a season in which both teams go into Rice Eccles undefeated?!

I know, too much to ask, but that would be incredible. And if they did, starting the year higher in the polls like this that would mean that by the time they get to November both teams would certainly be in the top ten, and the winner would be guaranteed a BCS bid!

That would be world class football right here in Utah!

And of course, they have that charity golf game between Utah and BYU coaches that goes back to Lavelle Edwards and Ron McBride. The loser in Golf has won in football since Mendenhall and Wittingham have taken over.

So that means that BYU wins in November and goes BCS hunting. And Utah whips some chump PAC10 team in Las Vegas.

Getting ahead of myself but this could be a great season if both teams play consistent and stay focused.

    Of course, go BYU!
