It's BCS not BSC. Should make no difference to you anyway since your cougs
won't be receiving an invitation.
if fhil steele is really that big why is he making rediculous rankings like
this, he put notre dame on it! honestly, they are the most hopeless bsc team
ever this year! and although he put utah on there for some reason, neither byu
or utah has a difficult schedule this year, it sucks, but it's true. either team
will be lucky if they get a respectable bsc bowl game
Steele is off on this one. No other national ranking polster has the Ute's
on the radar. It would be fun to see both BYU and Utah ranked in the top
20 above the majority of BCS big wigs come AP rankings and six or so weeks into
the season when the BCS rankings come out. Having BYU and Utah ranked in
the top 10 come seasons end would be awesome.
Well...after 283 comments on this article, it looks like the cougar apoplectic
meltdown has finally concluded. PLEASE...somebody write another article. That
how can utah even claim urban? he jumped ship first chance he could.
Yea, the yewtes could go 11-0 and score an 100 points a game until they run into
that powerhouse UNLV and then get SHUTOUT!!!
Your comments are weak and do not add any credibility with your inability to
Doesn't matter who makes the poll...they're all worthless until about 2 months
into the season.
The season has not even started yet and the UTES are already in your heads. They
must be good this year.Go Utes..
I guess readership at the D. news and papers all over the state among the utes
(cougar haters) will be up again now that the utes are ranked in a national
pre-season poll. Even though two weeks ago pre-season polls meant nothing.
Especially from a weak service that dared mention the cougars. Oh well, enjoy
the paper until another weak publication recognizes the cougars and the
"possibility" of a great season. The season has not even started yet and the
cougars are already in your heads. They must be winning again.
I am a cougar fan who agrees with your observations. All those teams
will lose.I just have not seen a consistant Utah team that will beat "All"
those teams.Utah will come into the BYU with a home game that will
make them "Bowl Eligible", and another "Must Win BYU Bowl" for Kyle. He's big enough to take responsibility now, and Dr. Hill really cannot be
totally happywith Kyle effort so far.Good luck Utah.
I am a big time Ute fan and the only team that worries me this year is Wyoming.
Michigan will be interesting but the Utes will come out on top. UNLY will get
beat down no problem. USU will lose. Air Force will lose. Weber State will
lose. Oregon State will get beat down. Wyoming, I hope the coaches will be
ready this year. Colorado State will lose. New Mexico will be another
interesting game but the Utes will come out on top. TCU will lose. San Diego
State will lose. After two years of stupid mistake the Utes will come out on
top. It is that easy..Go UTES
We Utes keep trying to be ranked when we play you, but it's those darned
losses.Seriously, in what world is Utah ranked ahead of BYU? Using
what logic?Or does this all come from a land of Schrute Dollars,
Stanley Nickles, Unicorns and Leprechauns???Sure, there, go
Utes...(I hope we don't play UNLV, and Michigan at Michigan, and I
know that the Wyoming team never does hold a grudge.Yep, we can do
it, even without our Urban Legend.
I like this. I hope BYU and Utah meet when both teams are undefeated. Hope
Utah is ranked above BYU, and that both are in the top 10. I hope TCU is
ranked, also, when the Cougars and Horn Frogs meet.
I love to listen to you BYU fans cry over this little poll. All you do is cry,
cry, cry. It must be tough living in Happy Valley.
Who is Phil Steele and who cares what he has to say?? All I know is that on all
of the pre-season polls that count (like the USA today poll, the coaches poll,
the BCS standings) BYU is ranked 14th and Utah is no where to be seen. So
Utah fans, enjoy your moment in the spotlight. It isn't going to last for very
long. I can't wait until football season starts!!! GO COUGS!!
Byu could go 11 - 0. As long as they dont run into a powerhouse like Tulsa.
They have the Heisman trophy winner and one of the best coaches in the
Nation.Just because BYU fans hate Meyer so much they can't see him
winning a title. I went to a BYU game a few years ago when the Crowd cheered
when Florida lost. You guys are jealous, and upset that he beat your cougars
down!! I hate to break it to you, but he won the National Title 2 years ago,
and several think they'll win it this year.He is a better coach than
Bronco!!! (Who do you honestly think would win in a national poll?). If you
took a nationwide poll of football fans Meyer would win 90% to 10%.Meyer has also done more than Level Edwards. Edwards 1 National
Title 0 BCS wins 7-13-1 in Bowl games (29 years) Meyer 1 National
Title 2 BCS wins 4-1 in bowl games (7 years)Sorry BYU fans, the
guys you worship (Bronco and Edwards) are not as good as Meyer.
I think it is funny how BYU fans are making fun of Utah for the UNLV game. How about BYU's effort in both games against UCLA!?!Scoring 17 points in
each game. The Utes scored 44 in one game against the Bruins, and didn't need a
lucky break (a blocked FG), to beat the 5th best team in the Pac 10 in a bowl
game. How about BYU win some non-conference games this year!!I
don't remember the last time BYU lost less than 2 non-conference games in a
Florida #1? That is almost as absurd as Utah being in the top 25! Show us some
rankings from a legitimate source!
I don't agree with this poll and don't think Utah should be ranked higher, BUT I
love that they've ranked it this way...just to see those kitty fans squirm and
Here we go, more unlv talk. It was probably a good thing with what happened last
year at unlv, they put up 8 wins in 9 games after that. Now they know not to
look by teams like that anymore, which means utah might put up 50 this year
against them. One thing I know about kyle and the utes is dont guarantee wins or
talk trash after the game because what goes around comes around. There will be
no mercy against unlv this year, plus its the first home game, Sanford and his
rebels will be down by at least 35 at half time.
That is true why do BYU fans pretend to like Utah on these things. Don't worry
Utah we here at UVU are getting pretty sick of BYU students and fans acting like
they're superior to everyone also.
Everyone you don't need to pretend to be a Utah fan just so you can rip on them.
Especially when most of the comments on this comment board are ripping on them.
Who's fans are the pompous ones?
Does all this talk even matter? BYU can never beat any of there good
non-conference opponents so they'll already be knocked out of BCS consideration
before Septembers is over. Then after this all the coug fan's will return
home and think about the glory days when they competed with Army and Navy to win
the national championship in the coaches poll and was left looking up in the AP
poll. Way back before any of their players were born. Then Bronco Mendahall
will return to the locker room and give some sort of conference talk to his
players about how BYU had tradition when his father was alive and how if you
live right you'll never have any problems.
The utes are paper tigers.BYU proves it on the field.W=W, L=L.Utes just talk and talk and talk.I am a self
repsecting 48 yer old male that likes both teams. If the Ute would
shut up and produce, they earn respect. If you win, you can say what
you want, ask Collie, Pierce, Allen, Garnett.Tiger.If you lose, shut
up, you didn'y earn respect.Ask Kobe, Whit, Dr. Hill, Mediate. Kobe
can't do it without Shaq. Talked the came, couldn't produce.I like
Utes. I hate whimy, pompous, idioditic, arrogant Ute fans. Many of
us are men, manny of us are atletes.Ute fans, ern you respect and
the board is yours.Otherwise, get off and practice.
Yes BYU is returning most of last years EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE?EXPLOSIVE?

last years defense, the Cougars just might have something to brag about next
This is ridiculous. The utes ahead of the cougars? This makes absolutely no
sense, considering the cougars are returning 10 of their 11 offensive starters.
here is my preseason rankings, means nothing but its personal satisfaction
:)BYU- 14Utah-25Utah has a good team, but by no
means is it good enough to be ranked ahead of the cougars, especially
considering all the factors. I think I will stick to the reliable sources on
this one, not some yahoo who thinks he knows what he is talking about.
boys boys boysare you telling me you tally your total EVER victories
over ranked teams and get a couple??here in the SEC we have to have
4-5 victories over ranked teams EVERY SEASON to even be in the running for a
Conference title.some dirty laundry should never be aired.
The Utes will kill byu this year. My team always wins.Utah Alumni
Did I mention that the UNLV coaches were laughing after the yewt game last year
at the lack of courage and guts the yewts desplayed in their fear of tackling
summers. No wonder Unga blasted into the line for the winning touchdown and
blew up the yewt defenders at the time he was crossing the line. Oh and did I
mention the UNLV won by a shutOUT?
"BCS is what every cougar fan dreams of, something the Utes already
accomplished."No, the National Championship is, something the
Cougars already accomplished. Also, only eight years separated BYU's #5 ranking
from Utah's #5 ranking. And BYU actually had to beat a good team in their bowl
game to get that.Frankly, neither team should be speaking too loudly
about a BCS berth when both teams have to win several tough games before that is
even a consideration. I don't believe either team will be undefeated in
They all have winning records against BYU?
You need to re-enroll in that R99 English class at your local JC.We
all saw how previous top 10 Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Florida State, among
others, simply reloaded last year. What do Texas, Texas A&M, Miami,
UCLA, Washington, Washington St., Arizona, Arizona St., Oregon, Oklahoma,
Colorado, Penn St., Michigan, Kansas St., Missouri, and Notre Dame all have in
Because they're better than your pathetic team.
Has Utah ever won a conference championship?Don't talk to me about
bowl wins and OOC wins when you can't even win your own conference.Kyle - noneMWC - 3WAC - 2Bronco - 2MWC - 4WAC - 19
can talk all you want about your seasons and make these crazy predictions and so
forth. Here's the thing your not a top 10 team. Those teams reload every year,
you guys start whining because a few players grad, or whatever.
tailgate at BYU!! what's up with that? YOu shouldn't be ranked if showing up 5
minutes before the game is the norm, and you can't tailgate or anything. I
traveled to see the BYU USC game a couple years ago and was kinda bummed with
the rules there.
two Mtn. WORST teams ranked in the top 25 when they haven't done anything last
year. Their conference is one of the worst conferences in the nation and they
play a weak pre-seaon. Someone explain.
Pre-season polls mean absolutely nothing. They're more inaccurate than Jeanne
Dixon's predictions. However, there is one good thing about getting ranked to
start the season. You actually have a chance to make the BCS at the end of the
season if you win all your games. Since Utah has to play BYU in November, we
know that only one team can possibly win all its games. It could be Utah; it
could be BYU. Both teams have excellent coaches and often produce stunning wins
even though they typically cannot recruit players as big and fast as those
recruited in, say, the Big 10 or the Pac 10. Good luck to all the Utah
teams in the coming season. The better they do, and the better all the teams in
their conferences do against teams from other conferences, the better chances
two or more local teams will be ranked in next year's pre-season poll.
Hi, I have lived in Utah now for a few years and have really enjoyed the BYU
Utah rivalry and the last two games were great. But I am wondering why BYU
students are called Zoobs? I am not trying to fan the flames but am actually
Has byu ever beaten a ranked oppenent?Utah/Kyle has two: Georgia
Tech #21 and UCLA #11
You failed to mention that Bronco has a .500 record against non-conference
oppenents, but two of those games where against 1AA. If byu didn't have a
"watered down" schedule he would be under .500 against non-conference teams.Has Bronco ever won on the road against non-conference teams? That
powerhouse Tulsa seams to be getting in the way. At least byu might beat Utah
State and get that road win.FYI: Since 2003 Utah is 10-4 against BCS
teams, BYU is 5-11 during that same time. AS for UNLV, Utah lost to
them for the first time is 17 years! Byu on the other hand is 4-2 against them
the past 6 attempts and just a few years ago byu lost at home against UNLV, at
home!By the way congrats on winning the Vegas bowl against a 6-5
team with NO Coach, NO QB, NO RB by one and being favored by 11 points. If I
remember: Hall: "We need to make a statement for the BCS next
year!".....right!!!AS for the NCAA tournament: One and done, byu in
100 years hasn't gotten to the sweet 16, see BYU.
WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!! Last time I checked they don't use this poll in any way,
shape, or form. Let it go.
"Hey, congrats on what BYU accomplished in 1920? Possibly you should live in
the now...."Fine!Now...Since Bronco and Kyle
became the current head coaches:BYU is 2-1 vs. Utah, 28-10 (6-6,
11-2, 11-2) overall, with 2 MWC Championships, 2-1 in bowls (all vs. BCS
teams)Utah is 1-2 vs. BYU, 24-14 (7-5, 8-5, 9-4) overall, with NO
MWC Championships, 3-0 in bowls (only one vs. a BCS team)...and
ThenThe 1974 Fiesta Bowl would have been a great game except for the
Oklahoma State headhunters who intentionally knocked Gary Shiede out of the game
with two very questionable blindside hits early in the game.I'll
trade the disappointment of losing the first 4 bowl games for the excitement of
winning the 1980, 1983 and 1984 Holiday Bowls anyday. For one of the
biggest comebacks in NCAA bowl history, see BYU.For one of the most
dramatic game-ending plays in the NCAA tournament history, see BYU.Both, by the way, happened during the same school year, 1980-81.
Hey, congrats on what BYU accomplished in 1920? Possibly you should live in the
now.... But if we are going back...we all who know leads the series, and we all
know who has the better winning percentage in bowl games. Maybe you should g
back t the 1974 Fiesta bowl, sounds like that was a real treat of a game...but
hey at least you can be proud.
Nobody is arguing which is more fun: watching your team in a bowl game or not
watching your team in a bowl game.It says a lot about BYU's program
that they could win the WAC so frequently but lose bowl games so frequently too.
That is why BYU has the reputation of being a paper tiger; their records during
the 70s and 80s looked far more impressive than the teams actually were thanks
to playing a bunch of creampuffs. It's also one of the many reasons nobody
likes BYU, they would inflate their record in a weak conference and say "why
can't we get any respect?"YOU HAVE TO EARN IT! And losing to AZ,
Tulsa, BC, and UCLA won't give you any.FYI: Since 2003 Utah is 10-4
against BCS teams, BYU is 5-11 during that same time.
"Who cares how many bowls a team goes to if they don't win at least the majority
of the ones (no matter how crappy a bowl it is) they get invited to?"Bowl games used to be a reward for having a great season.BYU

Hey confused. Neither the U or Y will do much with their Mickey mouse schedules
playing in a 2nd rate conference. Why is it so important that BYU
bust the BCS? the Utes, Hawaii, & Boise have already done it.The
last 2 BCS winners have come from the only conference that really matters.
It's funny you should mention that Utah only started going to bowl games
regularly after the system got watered down. Last I checked, BYU's bowl record
since bowl games became 'watered down' is 4-7-1, Utah's is 8-3. Even when everyone and their dog is going bowling, BYU STILL has an awful bowl
Before any krewgars make any bias opinions about why the Ute's shouldn't be
ranked 14th in the country, go to Phil Steele's website and read his email and
answer section. There Krewgar fan's, you will find out the answer why the Ute's
are ranked ahead of the Krewgars. Lets get 'em UTAH!!! BCS here we
"I doubt many recruits are beating down Kyle's door for the chance to play in a
minor bowl as a runner-up in the MWC." BYU has been the winner of the MWC two
years running to play for the right to play in the prestigious Las Vegas Bowl
against the fifth place Pac-10 team. NOBODY is beating down anybody's door to
play in this conference. BYU did not do this conference any favors by BARELY
beating a crappy UCLA team whom UTAH CRUSHED earlier in the year. In this
conference UTAH, BYU, and TCU need to be solid to give credibility to this
And they have Notr Dame 19th yea this poll is accurate. NOT
Your argument is poor at best. Who cares how many bowls a team goes to if they
don't win at least the majority of the ones (no matter how crappy a bowl it is)
they get invited to? BYU is a great football school. There is no doubt about
that. I am a Utes fan and I wish Utah had the same regular season success as
BYU has had in the last 30 years. However, I would still rather have Utah's
bowl record. What is the point of getting as far as you can go and not winning
it all? I loved Lavell Edwards (how can you not) but BYU's yearly tradition was
win the WAC, which he did many times, and get clobbered in the Holiday Bowl. It
is frustrating be a fan in this state. I am also a very dissapointed Jazz fan
(twenty years of my life cheering for one ring).
A mind is a terrible thing to waste. ewe-bies will have something to grin about
until kick off time.
I agree with your comment to some extent, but it doesn't fully hold up. Keep in
mind that before this last season, BYU lost John Beck, Cameron Jensen, Curtis
Brown, and Jonny Harline to name a few.
Utah couldn't even qualify for a bowl until the bowl system became so watered
down that half of the Division 1A teams were able to bowling.Utah
bowls:Pre-1992 -- 2 bowls (1939, 1964); Utah went 28 years in a row
(from 1964 to 1992) without even going to a bowl; they only went to 2 bowls in
their first 100 years of football.1992-2007 -- 11 bowls, almost all
of them against unranked opponents: Bowl -- Final Record --

How ignorant are you? Do you not remember in the carousel of #2's last year
that South Florida was one of those teams? Remember this name: Matt Grothe. He
is the QB. He passed for over 2600 yards and rushed for nearly 900. If it
wasn't for being sacked a few times he would have been over a thousand yards.
This team has only been playing D1 ball since 2000 and they are already
competetively playing in a BCS conference and S. Florida (yes, not the Gators)
could be contending for a National Title this year. I am a Utes fan. I can
only dream of a day when teams from this region will be given the same shot.
P.S. Where did I get the background information? PHIL STEELE's
Magazine. I provided my opinions, the mag provided the facts.
USU should be up there I think.
No kidding. USF only climbed as high as the top 5 last year, who is this Phil
Any preseason ranking that has Georgia behind South Florida (not Florida, but
South Florida) has to be ignored.
"and another bowl win"? hah you kidding me? They lost like 6 in a row. BYU
sucks in post season. That's why all the best out of state players (non-mormon)
go to Utah.
"BYU had the #1 Defense last year and still lost 2 games and could have lost the
UCLA/TCU/utah games and could have had 5 losses!"BYU also "could
have" gone undefeated!!! A couple of breaks in BYU's favor in each game "could
have" given BYU a win in both games they lost.In hindsight, the only
thing that counts is what they actually did, which is 11-2, back-to-back MWC
championships, and another bowl win.Phil Steele is welcome to his
opinion, but he's way out of sync with the concensus of most of the other
preseason polls that have BYU ranked around 15th, and Utah and Notre Dame not
listed.Personnally, I think Utah should be in the top 25, somewhere
between 20 and 25.Jamie Hill will have BYU's defense well prepared
with players who, although they didn't start last year, had significant game
experience as backups.

Caring BYU fans don't want to see you homeless after the season.
Only 3 returning starters on Defense! That is why he put Utah ahead of byu. Byu had the #1 Defense last year and still lost 2 games and could have
lost the UCLA/TCU/Utah games and could have had 5 losses! They only had 2, but
with only 3 returning starters on the defense are they going to outscore their
oppenents? Probably not, see: tulsa '07 and TCU '05! 50+points and a still
lose!Byu struggles when they face good defenses like UCLA, which
held them to 17 points twice, Utah which held them to 17 points, and Arizona
which held them to 20! Basically that "great offense" can and has been stopped!
Byu's defense won them those games but this year when they only have
3 coming back, and one injury away from losing one of them, WHAT ARE THEY GOING
TO DO? THAT IS WHY PHIL STEELE PUT UTAH AHEAD OF THEM!Utah has 16 of
22 starters coming back on their team and 17/22 if Casteel is counted. They the
best special teams in the conference and probably the country.
"Please do not confuse any QB performance in the MWC with Locker's in the PAC
10."A good passing QB, whether in the PAC 10, MWC, SEC, or any other
conference should have at least 60% pass completions, 200+ yds/gm, and a 2-1
Touchdowns to Interceptions ratio.Locker may be dangerous as a
runner playing quarterback, but his credentials as a passer, based on his first
season, are highly suspect.A 62.8 QB rating won't even get Locker
into the top 50 in QB rating, and certainly won't have many football fans around
the country declaring him to be the #1 quarterback. It sounds to me
like BYU will be preparing for an Air Force style triple-option attack early
this coming season.

at where all the teams are ranked on this poll I can't take this guy seriously.
Let's at least wait till the first kick before we make reservations for the BCS.
A look at the early projections for 2008. Gregory Cox of

Hayes), Rivals.com, ESPN (Mark Schlabach), CNN/SI (Stewart Mandel), and College

You must not be faithful in your "religion of College Football" Because Phil
Steele has been around for a while and produces a prominent college/pro football
If you have never heard of Phil Steele you can't call yourself a college
football fan. He is the most accurate and respected football analysts in the
First of all, polls such as SI and USAToday as well as the AP coaches poll are
the only ones anyone pays attention to. Secondly, pre-season rakings are bogus.
Notre Dame was ranking high a couple of years ago in the preseason and ended up
with a losing record that year with no bowl game.I guess its nice to be
recognized but these pre-season polls are just wild guesses at best.
Please do not confuse any QB performance in the MWC with Locker's in the PAC 10.
Both, UCLA and Washington will field much improved teams than took the field
last season. BYU will be extremely lucky to be 2-1 after the first
three games!! and some of games gets even harderin the stretch. The sucess of
the BYU season depends on quickly developing the outside pass rush and cover
corners/Dbacks. The cougars have the talent to win'em all, if they can just get
the right combination of the field from the start.
Wow I cant believe how much trash byu fans are talking. What goes around comes
around fella's. Phil Steel's magazine is legit, some guy earlier was acting like
who is South Florida, if you knew college football you would know they were
ranked in the top ten most of last year and ranked 2nd at a time. Yes notre dame
was bad last year, but i would not be suprised if they turned it around this
year. The past two seasons they have had one of the top recruiting classes in
the nation, and last year everyone was young. They have the potential to be
good. If the magazine is right with these rankings, every coug can slap
themselves in the face with all your stupid trash talk.Utah 34

I'm a college football fan who has had season tickets to byu football the past
several years and am moving to ohio and have ohio state season tickets next
year. I watch football religiously and I've never heard of Phil Steele and have
no idea how he gets off puting Utah ahead of BYU especially when BYU is bringing
its entire offense back and are going to be even better because Hall has a year
under his belt and BYU quarterbacks historically get better and better each
year. What a laugh!
Is Utah in any other polls?

RE: MichiganMichigan by 27? That's exactly the kind of thinking
the Utes hope your team has. I'm a BYU fan, but Utah will be returning many
good athletes from a year ago. Michigan should win being at home, but you'd
better not take Utah lightly.
Great trash talk, dude. Predict a Ute loss to Weber St. as if it has already
happened. Then follow it up by saying all of the things you won't have a chance
to say because Utah will not lose to Weber. More likely to lose to
a D1AA team this year is BYU. Kewg fans keep mentioning 'how tough' they are,
and they were ranked last year. BYU could very possibly come out taking them
lightly, then, BAM! Right in the kisser. Panthers 35 - Kewgars 32
This isnt last years rankings by chance is it? ND at 19? Seeing as the yewtah
being ranked ahead of BYU fact has already been beat to death, I see no comment
necessary, but honestly do they pay this Steele guy?
Utah fans can squawk all they want about Bronco's cumbaya sessions, about his
being "Fully Invested", and his "Quest for Perfection", but, what they can't
dispute is Bronco's success in rebuilding the BYU football program. The dramatic improvement from the 3 losing seasons immediately preceding
Bronco taking over the reins:5-6, 5-6, 5-7 (15-19, 44%, no MWC
championships)to Bronco's first 3 seasons6-6, 11-2, 11-2
(28-10, 74%, 2 MWC championships)is indisputable.After
back-to-back top 20 finishes, and with most of their key offensive players
returning, no objective fan can seriously question the legitimacy of BYU being
included in pre-season top 25 lists.Compare Bronco's record with
Kyle's,before:5-6, 10-2, 12-0 (27-8, 77%, 2 MWC
championships)after:7-5, 8-5, 9-4 (24-14, 63%, no MWC
championships)and it's easy to see why an objective fan could
question the legitimacy of Utah being included in pre-season top 25 lists.I think both teams are legitimate top 25 teams. BYU should be about 15th
in the polls. Utah should be lower in the polls, around 23rd, until they've
proven that they can win more consistently throughtout the entire season.
ok... I seriously doubt the Utes are going to do anything in their season, and
the cougars are appearing to have the biggest shot at busting the BCS this year.
I would expect BYU to be ranked in the top fifteen with their far superior
offense, defense, and well, special teams, too.
Read Phils method used in developing his poll. While it's based on math, the
process for assignment of values is subject to error (i.e. USF, Utah, ND etc)Secondly, it sets up Mich to beat a ranked team early in the
season(UTAH).Third, it sells his books in a new market!!!
Don't take Washington too lightly. We've got possibly the #1 QB in the nation.
Jake Locker, YES.... YOU WILL BE REMEMBERING HIS NAME! He is the best passing
and running QB in Husky history.
Looks like a ute fan controls this blog.......
The utes are ranked ahead of BYU in a 'Pre-season' poll. Gee, that is impressive
when you consider the fact that Utah is considered Only a slightly better-than
average-team that consistently wins seven or eight games. And take into
consideration that BYU has conscecutive championships in the conference and the
utes have none..............what is the precedent for the the utes so-called
higher ranking.Oh that's right, the utes will sneak up on Michigan
like Appalachian State, and shock the world of college football again? NOT.Oh, and one more thing, the real shock to the world of college football
will come the weekend the utes play Weber. Gee you would think the utes will win
this one by 50 or more. The utes and their tougher schedule than BYU? The utes
embarrassingly falls from the grace of the college football world.......Weber 13 Utah 12Your season comes to an end(at least in
terms of any great expectation)and never recovers from the disgrace this vaunted
Ute team brings on the Mountain West...as it won't matter what you do the rest
of the season. Weber becomes the new App. State. Utah becomes the new Michigan
that everyone pities....How sad..............
Talk is cheap like yewt victories. There is No Meltdown of BYU fans.
The yewts were talked about very nicely by ESPN last season as one of the better
8-4 or 9-3 type teams in the country.Coach Kyle hasn't won a MWC
championship yet while BYU has won two in a row. BYU has posted conscecutive
11-2 seasons while the utes have been an above AVERAGE team.Ute fans
begged the football gods last season to bring disaster down on BYU hoping for
some midseasonmeltdown that NEVER occured. And when the utes failed to
play an entire game of defense against the Cougars, they lost AGAIN in the last
minute.Yeah the utes may bring a more balanced team back and BYU has
gotten a lot of Hype about their team, but no one will know for certain as to
what happens until each team steps on the field.Ute fans hoping
Michigan overlooks them like App. State? No way in......well you know? Coach Rod
will have the Wolverines more than ready to play......BYU has put
the numbers up the last two years....utah has done nothing to move into any
poll. Least wise ahead of BYU..........
LOL, we'll see how long the red team's top 25 ranking lasts. My guess is that
pollsters will forgive the loss at Michigan but that the home loss to UNLV will
be too much to stay ranked.Meanwhile, it's not all good for the
mighty Cougars in blue, since they appear to have a season where they will be
favored in every game. In other words, anything less than undefeated will not be
good enough, and even an undefeated season probably won't get much respect.
This is a joke poll right? They have the Fighting Irish at 19. give me a
break....Where are the other PAC-10 teams? Heck, even UCLA beats
BYU every time. They have missed some mighty fine teams on the
BYU fans are pathetic if the cougs were ranked 14th in the paper they would say
it was very legit. But since its the utes its a fake magazine gimme a break.
This year is the utes year in the past every season something bad has happened
and were still descent. This year brian johnsons senior season returning defence
we should look deadly. BYU in the last couple years the tide has been on there
side this year its our time.
Not only are the Utes ranked ahead of BYU in football, the Rebels also broke the
top 25 in bb. Funny, it seems the cougars bubble is bursting.HaHaHa,
funny to see.
"Qwest for perfection" That's just about as realistic as "Fully Invested"Dumb slogans, just goes to prove Bronco really is the guy Biff in back to the
future just pretending to be a coach!
Until the MWC starts winning out of conference games consistantly, maybe you
should root for each other instead of bickering...That is until the Utes
crush the Kitties in November.
Anyways isn't a word. Anyways, I hate BYU
Who honestly think Philly boy knows what he's talkin' about? He's way off...Ute fans enjoy this while it lasts. By the way... Just cause Utah plays
in Michigan doesn't mean Utah has the tougher schedule. Wait a minute... Weber
St. is one of the toughest around. Might just get App. Stated. Knowing Kyle...
That'll happen. On top of Weber -- there's that other team that whooped ya...
UNLV.BYU plays the tougher schedule. Playing at Utah, TCU, and
Washington(they're tougher than what others lead on). With UCLA at home and they
can't be taken lightly no matter what.Utah does do well with OOC
games but for some reason can't do it with Conf. games. There's a
very good chance that both teams will end up in the top 25. In all reality...
BYU will start the season in the top 25 and Utah somewhere in the 30's.Athlon sports is a lot more reliable than Philly boy who isn't accurate -- at
that much. Athlon has been very close on their predictions on the past
years.Nothing against the rankings BUT I trust Athlon tons more than
Hey, enjoy what you can get,You know it won't happen on the
Did anyone notice any of the other rankings on here? This guy has
Notre Dame ranked 19th. What?!!! Did he spend last fall with his head buried
in sand? Sure, ND may be better this year than they were last year, but that's
only because they couldn't be any worse. Any worse and they would have been
dropped to Div 1-AA (or whatever it's called now). They'll be lucky to win 5
games this year.He also has USF ranked #8. What?!!!! That's even
crazier than either BYU's or Utah's ranking here.He has Georgia
ranked #9 (behind USF...). Did he turn on his TV after mid-October? Georgia
was playing the best football in the country by the end of the year, and they
have a ton of players back. And he has West Virginia #6...last time I
checked WVU lost their head coach and their entire program is in turmoil. They
still have talent, but #6 (and 3 spots ahead of Georgia)...not this year.So before anyone gets too excited about BYU or Utah's ranking in this
"poll," it looks to me like the guy who created this thing is a clown.
Utah in the top 25? What a joke!
Pre-season polls are about as accurate as the Yewts defense on 4th and 18.
Obviously this Phil Steele guy is a joke. How Credibile is a guy who ranks the
lowly Utes over the Mighty Cougars? Might as well place Utah State in at #9.
I can't believe the Cougars made the top 20.
For Utah to Beat Michigan...you will be suprised what Rodriguez and, maybe more
importantly, Mike Barwis (new strength/conditioning coach) will be able to do
with the talent at UofM. I understand people are saying that M will be breaking
in new system, lost players etc.,etc. There is no way that Rodriguez will allow
his tenure at M to open up with a loss to Utah. Michigan has ten times the
talent Utah has even without Justin Boren...the only player who transfered to
OSUck, who by all accounts was a lazy hack that couldn't cut Barwis' workouts.
Michigan will have an excellent D that will destroy the Utah offense...see you
I read phills blog and the thing that he ranks highest in is returning starters.
He has no clue about the mtn west. According to the way he ranks things, and the
information that he has, the Utes would be ranked higher than the cougs, so calm
down Cougs. Go cougars.
Your comment was allowed to be posted? What a joke!
BYU in the top 25? What a joke!
They should just dress up like Ohio State. Michigan will just roll and submit,
just like they have during 6 out of the 7 last years.Michigan sucks.
Even more so under Rodriguez. Even more so considering all their best players
just jumped ship to go to Ohio State.
I have a life so I only read the first 10-15 comments, but I read a lot of "we
(didn't know you were on the team) did x and y in the last couple of years" from
Cougar fans. There is a mantra in finance, that applies to football, that you
should learn. It goes like this "past performance does not indicate future
results." What the Cougars have done in the past two years doesn't mean
anything about football played this coming season. The Utes are
playing a Michigan team that has a new coach, with a completely new system.
They looked horrible in their Spring game. They don't have the players to run
the spread. I'm an alum of Utah and OSU. I can't wait to see Michigan go down
to my two teams in the same year. The rest of the tough Ute games are
at home. They probably have a better shot at a BCS game this year than the
Cougars. The sad reality is that if either team loses even one game they will
play some bottom -dweller PAC 10 team that hopefully has a winning record.
Allow me to remind all the obsessive-compulsive zoobies who can't seem to repeat
Utah's ONE loss to the Rebels often enough (yes, I know not all Y fans are like
that), that it was only a few short years ago that the TDS was losing to UNLVOctober 8, 2004 UNLV 24, BYU 20 (one of only two UNLV victories that
year)October 19, 2002 UNLV 24, BYU 3
. . . . . . BYU, however, has many reasons to believe they will not win as many
games as Utah. They return 12 starters, only 3 on defense; play at
Washington, at TCU on a short week, and at Utah after facing the Air force
option; they were very fortunate not to lose key players to injury last year,
will they be so fortunate this year?; their best blocking back, Tonga, is off
the team; and UCLA & Utah State have bye-weeks before they play BYU.BYU will struggle to get to 9 or 10 wins this year.
Objectively, I have a hard time distinguishing between which schedule is more
difficult, but although I'd like each teams fans to stop crying about it, I
don't have any unreasonable expectation that they will. For what it's
worth, Phil Steele says BYU has the more difficult schedule, but looking at the
teams directly: Worst game (Adv. BYU with N. Iowa over Weber St)
Best non-conference road game (Adv. Utah with Michigan over Washington)
Best non-conference home game (Adv. BYU with UCLA over Oregon State)
Wyoming (Adv. Utah with road vs. home) TCU (Adv. BYU with road vs.
home) New Mexico (Adv. Utah with road vs. home) CSU (Adv. BYU with
road vs. home) SDSU (Adv. Utah with road vs. home) Utah State,
UNLV and Air Force - DrawThe only distinguishing factor will be who has to
play the better competition in the rivalry game. Of course, based on the
outcome of that game, no one will care who had a more difficult schedule.
I will bet that this poll is closer to the final AP and Coaches polls from top
to bottom than any other pre-season magazine out there. In
fact, it will be closer than any of the people commenting here could do. Stop looking only at last years win totals as a predictor for this
seasons rankings. There are other factors to consider: number of returning
starters, which starters return, who will be back from injury, strength of
schedule, when and where a teams toughest games will be played, etc.Utah returns 16 starters from a team that won 9 games last year; they get
Casteel and Asiata back from injury; Brian Johnson should be healthy this year;
they play Oregon State, TCU, and BYU at home, they get extra time to prepare for
Wyo and SDSU; Weber State and Utah State are on the schedule; and Utah has a bye
before they play New Mexico. There are many reasons to believe Utah
will win 10 or more games this year.
I think it's hilarious that many of the Ute fans think they can stereotype all
BYU fans based on those who write comments on a newspaper comment board. It's even funnier when they think they wouldn't react the same way given the
same situation. Look at Utah fans' response to the Athalon rankings and our own
response to the Phil Steele rankings. But let's not forget that Cougar
fans can be the same way. Because, hey, we're all the same. Some of us just
cheer for an inferior school. Just kidding.
Opening game in the "BIG HOUSE"???Michigan by 27.
Heard it last year, and the year before. You have got to play the
game, and quit talking about the game.(UNLV... Uh-oh... sorry, that
just slipped out, but since it's out there, how are you guys going to match up
against the Rebel's this year? They're not ranked, so you should be able to
handle them, right?)Utah has had a great year once in the past
40 (Most Cougar fans I know respected the team for their efforts "THAT" year)
and your coach had smoke coming off his sneakers as he was heading out of town
faster than anyone on your defensive squad.Live in the now, quit
living in your year of the "Urban Legend" and we'll back off the National
Championship talk, Heisman, Outland Trophy Winners, etc...
byu fans need a reality check. Just because you had a fair 2 years what makes
you think your the greatest football act since Utah beat Pitt in the first BCS
breaker for any non BCS team. Utah lost a lot of seniors who were a part of
that great team and it took a while to get back to normal. We are back and tis
your season to be worried. The kitty cat cougars are now match for the mighty
UTES this year, or in fact any future year
Phil Steele put the Utes #14 based on them beating Michigan. If that happens,
the Utes could get on a roll and climb in the rankings. Go Aggies!
I suggest you quit buying those expensive "chair seats" and invest in the
Dollar.Your money will still go away, but without all of the bad
memories that make you Ute Fans so sour.
at 14? There is no way. BYU should have been 14.
Returning QB???Dude, your back-up quarterback is better than your
starting quarterback.Beside that, wasn't he injured part of the
season last year with the same degree shoulder separation that Max Hall had when
Max Hall led the Cougars past your Utes last year. Where is the heart? The list that "goes on and on"... Does that list include the same
defense that "Frank the Tank" so abused at UNLV in that SHUTOUT game, that the
UNLV coaches admitted to the paper they couldn't stop laughing? (Isn't your
defense led by Captain Michael Scott and his Assistant to the Regional Captain
Dwight Schrute?)I agree with many Ute posters (and even senile
Lou Holtz) that the Utes "might" have the better athletes. Just no heart,
coherent fans, and they have poor coaching at best.Face it, until
your "defensive" Head Coach learns how to give a motivational speech that
doesn't begin with "Our backs are against the wall, we've lost three straight,
time to start playing" Ute fans shouldn't be concerned about "B Y Who fans
sounding like idiots."Quit talking, and do it on the field...Pre-season Phil Steele means squat come gametime.
byu fans are idiots... the utes return the starting QB RB 2 WR's and the list
goes on and on!! not to mention the best kicker and punter in the nation!!!
after we go into Michigan and kill them we'll see what all you B Y WHO fans are
talkin about now!! LOL
im pretty sure this guy doesnt even know what he is talking about. Utah isnt

First, I'm a die hard Cougar fan but I will say that I am truly glad that Utah
is ranked. Anytime ANY team from Utah is recognized nationally, that's a good
thing for our great state. However, Utah ranked ahead of BYU? Who
are they kidding?.....

The Utes in the top 20? Yeah right! BYU 17th? That's probably a more accurate
As much as I like the strong showing with the MWC in this poll, the guy has
Notre Dame and Penn State ranked far too high (LSU not in the top 10?!?!?). I
would take this poll with a HEAVY grain of salt.Relax everybody,
it's just a meaningless pre-season poll, nothing will matter once the games
actually start, then the real rankings will come out.Go Cougs.
Keep dreaming. The BCS Will never allow a non BCS School to win a NTL
Local retailers were getting way overstocked on Red Sweatshirts. You
would think over the past two years eweyt fans would be a little bit more
humble, more gracious, and less obnoxious. Two Years ago, Harline
holding the ball, and the "loudest silence" I have ever heard. A blowout is
probably the next step for the highly superior BYU team.(Anyone know
who has the longest unbeaten streak in the country? I'm not sure, but I think
it's Utah or BYU.)
BYU-Provo is WAY overrated. Last year they couldn't beat AZ or Tulsa. So now
they are scheduling down to try to go undefeated -- nice approach.
I've noticed BYU fans voting Utah will lose all 12 games on Phil Steele's web
site poll. Wow, your hatred runs deep. Given that most of you are LDS, may I
say, "Thou shall love thy neighbor..." NOT!!! You BYU fans are hypocritical scom
and it shows through your absolute hatred through the comments you've made and
the actions you've taken (ie the childish voting mentioned previously)against
anything that deals with the University of Utah or anyone else who's not
Last year Phil ranked Georgia #11 preseason;they ended up #2.
the moron who ranked Georgia down at #9 ?what is he smoking?
I am torn with these rankings. I am a huge Ute fan and Steele is a legitimate
predictor of these games, but I have some issues with the rankings. I am glad to
see the Utes are ranked, 14 is a little questionable even if I do think they
will be great this season. As proof, you see Clemson in the top 5 and Notre Dame
on the list. We all know that ND was terrible last year. This is another reason
that I am torn. It is hard to see ND on the list, but at the same time hard to
imagine that ND could ever not be in the top ten with all of the recruiting they
are capable of. BYU will be great, but the defense is going to be a
bigger issue than you expect. I think the hardest thing will be to replace Kehl
who I saw as the leader of the team. Your kicking game will be much improved and
will probably add around 6 ppg to the average though.I can't wait for the
season to start, so that we can actually have some substance to the arguments.
Finally something Y and U fans can agree on. We both dislike Boise St. Hot Rod
would probably call them the pesky Broncos. And we both share a genuine dislike
for Notre Dame.
According to Steele, BYU has the tougher schedule. If Utah can catch Michigan
off guard early, what a boost it will be for the BYU-Utah showdown. Go Utah. But
in the end,,,,,,,, BYU 38 Utah 24,,,, we win the game and the fight,,,, always
Stop the one liners. They hurt, because they are true...Also, did
anyone ask to stop hearing the one about the classless onside kick and the WY
coach flipping off Kyle? Or that A.Collie lives better than we do....stop those too, it hurts, because it's true.Glad Phil Steele
picked us higher.I've always known we were better, we just could
never do it on the field.
Didn't BSU get spanked by power house ECU in their hawaii bowl game. If you
look at BSU's bowl record as well as the rest of the WAC, BSU and WAC fans
shouldn't be poping off to much!!!
The difference is 'Utah by 5' was popularized by a local radio commentator. It
has become a way to identify yourself as a Ute fan.Do you hear Ute
fans repeatedly saying '34-31' anymore? No, that one-liner died within months
of the second victory by that score even though it had more of a leg to stand on
than either of BYU's current one liners. Sure, it lived on in the commercials
for quite a while, but that was not because of Ute fans.I'm actually
ok with '4th and 18' but to go back to Harline is lame.
I hope to see another year, like the one back in '94, where we had 3 conference
teams all finishing in the Top-25. That year it was Utah and Colorado St. in
the Top-10, and that team down south rounding out the bottom of the Top-25.
Could Utah, TCU, and the team down south accomplish this again? Too bad it
won't make much difference in bowl opponents. I also hope to see
Colorado St. move back into the upper echelon of the MWC. They were scary good
not too long ago.GO UTES!!!

As a Ute fan, I think that 14th is a bit high. I do not put too much stock in
preseason rankings anyway, but what else are we going to argue about now? Major
League Soccer?A number of people have mentioned Notre Dame - I think
they are going to be much better. They have most everyone back, an easier
schedule, and a stellar recruiting class.I'm a bit nervous about
Utah's defensive line, but otherwise the starters all back, plus Asiata who
would have been a starter. As for the team down south - I respect
the fact that they have found walk-ons to fill in holes in their defense, but
they may not always be that fortunate. It is a bit unrealistic to talk like
replacing eight starters on defense is no problem whatsoever. They will have a
formidable offense though, which should concern every opponent.I'm
looking forward to another fun season. Go Utes!
There was an earlier comment about stopping one liners (4th & 18 etc...) I
still hear "Utah by 5". There is a dumb one liner that must stop. Enough
already. How long have we been hearing that one?
I think everyone needs to relax just a bit. This afterall is a preseason poll.
I've noticed in the past that usually preseason polls favor teams which finished
strong the previous year. There will be surprises. Maybe the Cougs and the
Utes will fall on their faces. Maybe they'll both be top 10 material. The
games will be played and we'll all find out how good the teams will be. This
much we know for sure. College football starts in a little more than 2 months.
Utah has a decent shot at beating Michigan in the big house. BYU has a chance
to impress with big games at Washington and with UCLA at home. Life is good
Is that the secondary that gave up the 4th and 18. Yea, we're glad they're all
back too. Are they the ones who Sandford said were "afraid" to tackle the UNLV
running back? Yea, we're really glad they're back. Did I mention that UNLV
SHUTOUT the yewtes last year? Again, SHUTOUT the hapless yewtes!!!
While I will admit the 2004 Utes deserved a better opponent than Pitt, I don't
think it is fair to downgrade the Panthers.Pitt was 8-3 and ranked
#19 before the game and they were the Big East Champs. Not exactly a push-over.
50-12 BSU over BYU!!!
Can't wait to beat BYU again. Remenber when we came down to your house in Provo
and won 50-12. Can't wait to do it again. Too bad we don't play you girls this
year. Oh yeah, we did it to Utah and Utah St.
People need to be more specific when refering to my school. Just for
clarification please refer to our school correctly as BYU-Provo.
Wow. We are all dumber for having read your post.
I am from PAC 10 territory. You know - big time college football. I don't care
a bit about either of these two teams. Lets see USC / UCLA / Ore. / CAL /
etc... or BYU / Ut. / UNLV / NM / Col. St. / etc... no contest.Coming
from Southern Cal. we hear more pub. about BYU than Utah. A couple years ago it
was all about Utah and who they would play in the BCS (that team deserved better
than Pitt.!) But since then we have heard nothing about Utah. BYU gets more
Actually Phil Steel's preseason publication is the Bible of College Football.
Sorry. He is incredibly acurate in his preseason projections. Since 2004 he
has done a section called going up. In that he predicts what teams will have
the same or better record in the upcoming season. In the past 4 seasons he has
put 42 teams on that list and 34 of them of matched or improved their records.
Thats pretty darn accurate. Utah is on that list this year. That is very
reasuring. I personally think pre-season polls are meaningless.
However, I love that BYU fans are telling Phil Steele that he is some kind of
idiot. They all of course pubish a preseaon college football poll that is
widely read and respected by millions of football fans across the country. They
are just smarter than he is. Arrogance: (N)overbearing pride evidenced by a
superior manner toward others, see Zoobs.
Believing the Utes are the 14th best team in the country is like saying my
Aggies will go bowling this year!BYU yours is a couple slots too
high as well. But should still be way ahead of the Utes.Just my two
cents. I used to have more but now it's in the gas tank.
To all you UTES who think that BYU's ultimate goal is to get to the BCS, you are
as dumb as Phil Steele. The ultimate goal is to win a National Championship and
last time I checked the score on that one was BYU 1 Utah 0. Open
your eyes and have fun in the Helicopter Bowl this year.BTW -
Somebody tell Coach Whit that Elton John called, he wants his fanny pack back.
I have heard of him. I just think it is funny that last week when an article
stated that Athalon Sports rated BYU in the top 20, it was the Utes that were
bashing Athalon and claiming that they never heard of them. BYU fan defended
Athalon Sports and how well respected it is. Now it goes the other way, and Ute
fan acts offended that nobody has heard of Phil Steele and act like he writes
the Bible of college football. It's kind of comical.I am a BYU fan,
but I can see both BYU and/or Utah very easily in the top 25 come the end of the
year. It will all come down to who gets a few breaks in their favor.
Thanks for the "objective" view, Anonymous. You being a U fan and all. Boise
State and Utah get more attention than BYU. Collectively, you're probably
Phil's own words on BYU/Utah this year:Gentlemen,I want
to thank each of you for writing and it is nice to see Mountain West fans being
among the first questions as normally in May an June most of the questions come
from SEC country where College Football is king 365 days of the year.First let me address BYU. They are a team that has dominated the MWC going
16-0 the last two years and outgaining league foes by 139.4 ypg in 2006 and
157.3 ypg in 2007. Their goal this year is to get the a BCS bowl and despite
having just 3 starters back on defense they are capable of accomplishing just
that! I feel they have an excellent shot at knocking off
I hope Utah beats MICH. and MICH goes on to win the Big 10.Then, BYU
beats UCLA and UCLA goes on to win the PAC 10.Guess who plays in the
Rose Bowl? Mich vs UCLAWhen BYU beats Utah for the MWC title, the
Cougars will be in position to play Florida for the Nat'l Championship.
Last year proved it all can change, this college football season in the MWC will
be close the biggest factors are going to be schedule and health. If Utah can
stay healthy look out they are a great team and are in a better situation this
year depth wise if key personel go down. ie Louks vs a big uncoordinated QB that
could do nothing. BYU should be tough, Defense is a big ? but the offense
should make up for a large portion of that. I hope both teams can stay healthy,
although I cannot stand BYU I wish the inury bug that the Utes had last year
upon no-one not even my enemy. Additionaly instead of whining about it we
should all be happy because it gives the MWC credibilty now if only we could get
a better TV deal life would be great. GO UTES!!!!!!!
BYU fans as an outsider from the Midwest you need to realize that nobody outside
Utah is impressed with your program. Nobody remembers the fact that BYU has won
two strait undefeated conference championships, (unless you live in the MWC) So
before you expect respect, you need to get to a BCS game and win. People east
of the Mississippi think that BYU and Utah play in the WAC. Boise State and
Utah actually get more attention than BYU.
Sure, Utah has a chance of beating a rebuilding Michigan in Ann Arbor, and BYU
has a good chance of getting it right against UCLA this year. But
whom among you (coug fans?) believes either of these teams could come out of a
BCS conference with a ranking of 14 or 17? OK - maybe in the Big East. Big-10,
PAC-10, Big-12, ACC? Slim to no chance. SEC? Never. Not with these
rosters. The rankings are a gift to a lesser conference - on all
It is a preseason poll. They're not good for much but fodder like this. You guys
will be good, and we'll be good. Who cares? As far as our two teams go, all I
care about is that we beat you in November, which we will.I don't
care if both teams are 11-0 or 0-11 or anything in between come late November. I
just can't wait till we win and shut you pencil-neck dweebs up. Settle down, go
watch your folk dance team or sing in the tunnels or whatever you dorks do down
there and the season will start soon enough and this can be settled on the
A Utah fan who never made it?????!!!!!Phil Steele could buy and sell
Brigham Young University ten times over.
Two teams with pre-season ranking in the top 20 and the MWC cannot get national
coverage for the game they play against each other?
the utes are much better than BYU.........
byU ended the season ranked in the top 15, right? So, amazing how a team that
got shut out (as byU fans like to point out) by one of the most terrible teams
in college football (UNLV) can come within 1 minute (and 1 miracle play) of
beating the top 15 team??? byU is so mighty, that they barely beat such a
terrible Ute team???No, Utah lost more player games due to injury
last year than any other football team. Without injuries (knock on wood for
2008), Utah WILL be better and WILL beat byU.There really isn't any
question....Utah's defense kept them in the game with byU last year and now they
will finally have an offense to go along with their top-rated defense. I'm not
sure why byU fans are even opening their mouths...its a no brainer.
And as if in fulfillment of prophecy, "Fully Invested" only further proves my
everyone its ok...just go look at his website...then you will be able to tell
why he knows nothing about college football...im guessing he's a utah fan who
never made it so he's trying to meke himself feel better
The Poll's a stretch for both the Utes and Cougs - regardless of Steele's
credibility or lack of it.Nevertheless, there's one thing we readers
can always count on - 'off-the-chart' moronic comments from a large portion of
cougar fans. Try watching a college football game that isn't played in cougar
stadium before you post your drivel.Go Utes.
Stop pretending like this guy just came to Earth in a UFO and started making
college football predictions. He is actually the most accurate college football
predictor in the nation. Nice that just because byu is 3 spots below Utah you
have to flip out. I think it's great that the MWC has two teams in this poll.
I agree with BBKing. Wouldn't it be exciting if both teams ran the tables in
preparation for a final showdown in Rice Eccles? Two top ten teams battling it
out for MWC supremacy and possibly a shot at a BCS title? Now, THAT is an
OK people, let's look at this from an objective standpoint. THIS IS A GOOD
THING. I being a cougar fan am thrilled that Utah is also ranked. This brings
credence to the conference and shows that the Utes and Cougars are finally
getting the recognition they deserve. I say, go Utah and beat everyone that
comes in your path, but watch out in November, because BYU WILL WIn. Even
though I still think that this poll is a little jacked (Notre Dame? Cal?).
Last year maybe this poll would have made sense, but not this year. Good luck
Utah, see you in November!
He is so stupid if he thinks the utes are better than BYU look at the offense is
gonna be good maybe he should look at ESPNs poll
Michigan wont let appalachian st happen again? Utah is a D-1 established school
that will win in michigan. Plus this year michigan lost a a great qb,
runningback, recievers, o-line shall i go on. . .
The only real question for BYU last year was whether they would have good QB
play or not. They returned most of their offensive line, Reed and Tonga, plus
they were getting a proven player back in Austin Collie.I wouldn't
call that rebuilding your offense. On defense, they have to replace 8
starters. That is a lot harder than finding a new QB and RB.Utah
beating Michigan wouldn't be "another Appalachian State." Utah is a good D1
team that is not that far removed from winning a BCS game and wins bowl games
more frequently than BYU fans change their underwear. It wouldn't be a bad loss
for Michigan if they were to lose.
We can whine and moan... some of us "cougar fans" can be ignorant, and
rediculous. You can call us all of the names in the book! Steele has not only,
Utah, who got shut out by respectably one of the worst teams in the nation last
year, and a team that had 9 losses in the top 25. This has no effect on the AP
polls. 4th and 18... nice covereage... how bout when unga plows through for the
touchdown and the poor utes in a ball crying... hey lookin forward to another
domination by the Cougars! Not only in the MWC but in our outside conference
Exactly how many times will zoobies repeat their "still open" line? Its old.
Find something new. Stop obsessing over ONE loss to UNLV. Is there not a shred
of creativity down in Provo?
Think how good BYU would have been if Whittingham had accepted!
I hope to see two unbeaten teams play each other at the end of the season, but
seriously, do you Ute fans actually believe that you will be able to beat
Michigan in the Big House? Michigan is NOT going to allow another Appalachian
State happen again this year. You can hope and dream, but they are not going to
lose two season openers in a row. Utah has potential to be a great team, but
before we forget, everyone last year said BYU was going to be terrible because
they were going to be "rebuilding" their offense. So I guess BYU has to
"rebuild" their defense this year, right? Go Cougars!!!
Your last two posts 12:09 & 12:14 were great. Your others? Contentious. It's
Utes like you that give your team a bad name. Your said Y fans should not be so
negative, but a quick review of your posts shows that YOU should chill out.
Your team will be good this year. The Y will be good. Be happy. I don't
dislike the Ute football team/program. My dislike is towards the Ute fan
I am a BYU fan and think this is great to see the Utes in the top 25 as well. I
would like to see TCU or another MWC school in it as also. The conference needs
this kind of publicity or our conference will not get the respect from the rest
of the nation. I hope the Utes go undefeated (until they play BYU). The BYU-Utah
game is always better when both teams are good. The only thing pre-season polls
are good for are pre-season respect - which translates to a higher ranking when
you keep winning. Other than that, they are worthless. It is good to see Utah in
a few top 25 polls.
Trust me. There are very few Cougar fans, if any, who haven't thanked their
lucky stars that Whittingham turned down the Y. And since Collie is coming back,
he'll still be open.
In the Rivals.com pre-season rankings, last season's BCS buster, Hawaii, is

Me bleed Cooger blue. Anyone who thinks BYU not #1 stoopid. Yewts are so stoopid
they think they #14. Who is this guy anyway? How could the Yewts be picked above
BYU because BYU won Utah last year.
Pre season rankings are as reliable as, and mean about as much as a politician's
promise to reduce spending and corruption in Washington.
I'm not sure who Phil Steele is. But I would like to see what he is basing his
decision to place Utah so high upon. They are good, but I think it's even a
strech for BYU to be ranked that high and BYU is better than Utah. And i'm
basing that decision upon the result of the last game the two teams played. plus
their records. plus the game they played two years ago. plus max hall to austin
anyone with Notre Dame on their top 20 list is suspect at best...
Rankings don't matter. I hope both teams go undefeated into November. Imagine
the publicity if two rivals like BYU and Utah are playing to get a BCS bid at
the end of the season. To bad it'll be on the mountain. Gameday would so be at
Rice Eccles again.
"Utah has 20 more victories than BYU in football head to head"Thanks
to the leather helmet era, BYU's record vs Utah is 30-50-3 (not including games
played in the 1890s where the teams split 3-3).During the last 50
years, however, BYU has a 29-21 record vs Utah; and during the WAC/MWC era
(since 1962), BYU is 28-18 vs Utah. The last tie, btw, was 6-6 in

Phil Steele is not only a respected College Football expert, but his preseason
magazine is the most accurate predictor of team performance of any of the major
College Football magazines including TSN, Lindy's, or Athlon. What's
more surprising is that none of the other magazines or web sites give the Utes
any respect in preseason rankings. For me, the scariest game on BYU's schedule
is Utah. Nothing would be better than having both teams undefeated coming in
playing for the conf championship and a BCS birth."...Sakoda lines
up for the game winning 28 yard field goal from dead center...and...DOINK!...no
good!!"Oh wait, that's already happened before. Someone needs to
write a new one.
Phil Steele is just doing the best guess work he can. But...BYU is returning only 11-12 starters compared to Utah's 16. Max
Hall started and finished in two BYU losses compared to Brian Johnson, with a
shoulder injury, starting AND finishing with only one loss (to BYU).Utah
has A LOT more defenders returning than BYU (defense wins championships. The
fact that BYU had all that offense compared to Utah's offense at that last game
and Utah was STILL very much in the game shows this). Also, this
doesn't take into account last season as much as you think nor does it predict
where they'll be come December. It's just Phil Steele's best guesswork. You cougar fans are funny though. One article that doesn't have your beloved
Cougars ineffably praised, and you guys go CRAZY! I can see why you guys would
want to be the University of Utah. Get a Nobel Prize Laureate. or some REAL
professors for that matter, not just good seminary teachers. Get a
To hear the BYU fans tell it, you would think that BYU had beaten Utah by 30
points the past two years. Injuries were the problem for Utah last year. They
are very good and very well coached. It will be a fun year to watch both teams.
I got the magazine and it is amazing, not just about utah but how detailed
everything is with every team. It even says what kind of field they will be
playing on like field turf or grass. I will not disagree and not say byu wont be
good because they will, but utah will be very underrated when the season comes.
I think the biggest factor this year will be how good brian johnson will be
without having to try as hard as he did last year. He will have such a good
supporting class around him that he will be able to let loose like he did
throwing in '05. Utah's runningbacks will be amazing. Mack will hit 1,250 yards
and I wouldnt be suprised if Asiata went for over 800 giving the utes over 2,000
on the ground. That will take a ton of pressure off BJ.GO UTES!!
BYU's "Qwest for Perfection" will end likely the first week when they host UCLA.
For those of you who don't know Phil Steele....then you aren't
college football junkies. He runs a publication and has been and is much more
accuarate than any other pollers out there. Now, the Utes at 14? I think that is
way off base even though I love my Utes. Coug fans, rather than cry
be glad....the conference needs this to continue building it into a football
conference. Don't be so negative. GO UTES
Go BYU. Don't worry Cougar fans. Utah is a good team too. Worry about Utah in
November. Preseason polls do not mean squat compared to a loss versus a team you
should beat especially if you have high expectations.
I'm a huge Utah fan but 14? Seriously he's delusional. We've had 3 mediocre
seasons in a row where we've underachieved and suffered losses that never should
have occurred. I think byu could be around 20 so their ranking isn't so
unbelievable. Wow. I'm shocked by this. He must have different polls for each
state to make the teams in that state feel good.
Phil Steele isn't basing this poll only off of how well teams played last year.
It is based off of things like SOS from last year compared to this year,
returning starters, injuries from the previous year, coaching changes, etc.Interesting note from this magazine: Utah lost 51 starts to injury last
year, which was more than any other team in the country. Historically, teams
don't have back-to-back seasons with that many injuries. So, basically what
this says is that even in a year where the Utes were ravaged by injuries they
STILL put up NINE(9) wins and they are likely going to be healthy this year
meaning they should be VERY GOOD, if not flat-out GREAT.
While BYU did have a statistical advantage in most categories, I'm curious why
you think BYU's turnovers deep in their blue zone had such an affect on the
game. Both teams had two turnovers.BYU threw an
interception at the BYU 16 yard line (that is Utah's red zone, not BYU's blue
zone). Then they fumbled at the Utah 25 yard line (not in the blue zone
either). Thus, BYU didn't have one turnover "deep in their blue zone".Utah threw an interception at the BYU 5 yard line (deep in Utah's red zone).
Utah's other turnover was an interception at the Utah 43 yard line. Thus, Utah had one turnover "deep in the red zone." BYU had no turnovers
"deep in their blue zone."It's interesting that the BYU turnovers
deep in their blue zone (that never happened) had such a profound affect on the
outcome of the game when Utah's red zone turnover didn't.
This poll is a joke, they have Georgia at 9, Notre Dame Ranked, Phil Steele
needs to watch more football. I see both Utah and BYU having strong seasons
this year, but based on last year BYU should have the higher preseason ranking.
All this preasons poll stuff is garbage anyways. "Thats why they play the
games!" I can't wait.
I love this. You have nothing of value to say, so you use hmmmmm. Is it that
you are thinking of something witty to say, hmmmm.
The cougar win over the utes will provide some timely leverage at the end of the
season. And Yes, BYU will beat UCLA, but UCLA will be the PAC 10 champs and
play in the Rose Bowl. Stand by for the Cougars and the Gators in
the BCS championship game!!!That's right folks, your read it here,
I am a die-hard cougar, but I think most BYU fans here aren't giving Utah the
respect they deserve. We squeaked out 2 wins over them in the last 2 years. It
was a miracle, to say that Utah is anything but tough would be inaccurate. I
would say that the rankings are a little off, but it's great to see both BYU and
Utah ranked. I don't get why most BYU fans love to see Utah get beat by UNLV.
The only thing that does is take credibility away from our wins over them. We
should cheer our guts out for the Utes when they play everyone else, then
destroy them and hate them with the hate of a thousand burning suns when we play
them. That's what a good rivalry is. I say go Utes when they play anyone
else (we're all in the MWC) but GO COUGARS when they play us. Both teams will be
great this year! My prediction for this year- BYU will beat UW, then dominate
UCLA for 3 quarters and then collapse and give the game away in the 4th. Also,
Utah will destroy Michigan, only to lose to Utah State. Go Cougars!
Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!I love this! BYU fans are all up in arms because Utah
is getting more love from a national publication than they are getting. Ha Ha
Ha!!!I think the real issue for BYU fans is that they KNOW
Whittingham is on the verge of doing great things at Utah, and they are SCARED.
Go Utes! There are a lot of starters returning and true athletes grace the
Utah Sidelines.I cant wait to watch this season unroll.PS. Utah has 20 more victories than BYU in football head to head, so all
the BYU fans can come talk trash to me about Utah when they tie the series
(assuming they win every game for the next 20 years. I will be at least 46 by
then, but you and I know that we will never see the Cougars catch the Utes.
This is awesome. I wish all polls looked like this. It only adds to our
credibility as a conference
U fan will say "1984 was in the past, let it go"U fan will also say
"Utah has BCS win, see 2004"Hey Hilarious, is that a double
Some arrogant? hmmmm......
Are you kidding me!! Is this guy stupid?! I don't know who this guy is but i
think he needs to research these teams more and find out who really is the
better team. BYU is ranked 12th in the national polls and Utah is not even in
the picture of any type of national attention. This Phil guy needs help!
Are you kidding? Nine losses last year.
"Phil Steele is famous for the best pre-season college football review magazine.
He really does his homework, on every team... not just the BCS teams"Obviously, Phil doesn't dig as deep as he should in doing his homework because
he left one of the most important factors out of his equation in evaluating
BYU's defense -- Jamie Hill, who took 4 walkon DB's last year and molded them
into a unit that hardly anyone noticed, because they were so solid. They were burned by trick plays early in the season during the Tulsa game, and
then shut down the trick plays the rest of the season. Utah tried at least half
a dozen trick plays during their game at BYU and every single one was stopped
for a loss or minimal gain.3 starters returning, plus a solid group
of backups, plus Jamie Hill = another solid defense for the coming season.Bronco's vision of building a program, rather than a team. Preparing all
of his players to be ready to play whenever they're called upon.
All I ever read about on these posts from cougar fans, unti today, is what you
team will be ranked in the pre season polls. Now you changed your tune about
pre season polls. It is amazing how a cougar fan will pick and choose what is
wrong and right. I am sure you will be debate this at your next family night
activity up at Squaw Peak.
who the heck is Phil Steele never even heard of him so why are we even talking
about this because everyone knows that BYU is going to be a much better team
then Utah this next Year. Even you ewt fans know that BYU is better and know
that UTah shouldnt be ranked that high in the polls U ute fans just wait till
November when BYU kicks your but and make it into a BSC game
I sometimes feel myself wanting to pull for the Utes.1) You are a Utah
team2) The MWC needs respect and if you win it helps the conf.3) A
Ute win (over someone other than the Y)helps the awesome BYU/Utah rivalry. But then I come across Ute fan. Some of you are ok. Most of you are
angry and pretentious.Go Cougs.Yes I know there are some
arrogant Y fans as well.
If you don't know who Phil is...Pat Forde from ESPN said that the 5th best
college sport day in the entire year is the day that college football preview
magazines hit the stands and says that "This is the day Phil Steele has made."
Get out of the Utah County Bubble and see the world!!!Utes rated
higher than the Cougars........thats the way it should be. Suck it up
zoobies...still trying to acheive what Utah has..a BCS birth and an undefeated
season (see: Utah 2004).
Is this guy really serious? Geez, where does he get the idea of the Utes being
14th!? Utes fans and players don't even think they'll be 14th at any time this
coming year! What is Phil Steele smoking?
Talk is cheap. Pre-season rankings are meaningless. Looking forward to the
season and a November date in Rice Eccles. Go Utes!
"Outside of Provo nobody cares about BYU"LOL. Actually, many Utes
care as much or more about BYU than they do their own team.BYU in a
BCS game is not the end goal, but a stepping stone to their ultimate goal,
earning a shot at another National Championship; something Utah fans can only
dream of because of BYU.If it hadn't been for BYU's 1984 13-0
National Champions and BYU's 1996 14-1 Cotton Bowl Champions, there would have
been no Boise State, Utah, or Hawaii BCS busters.
It's always a joke that BYU fans are in the "Utah County Bubble" and these
cougar posts are proof. Phil Steele is famous for the best pre-season college
football review magazine. He really does his homework, on every team...not just
the BCS teams. His work is more objective than...say...ESPN (the MWC spurned
ESPN for the MTN so we get no respect). As a Ute fan, its great to
hear the BYU fans moan over this. All summer they can't wait for another
football article to pronounce themselves the MWC winner and BCS bubble buster.
Looks like you've got some competitionUtah DOES have a tougher
schedule this year!!!Utah has a good portion of their offense back
and most of their stellar defense back this year too. All the best players with
injuries are coming back (best RB, WR, QB) so the Utes, assuming they are
healthy, WILL be a force this year. I'm not predicting a MWC championship or
BCS year, but the Utes will be good and have the same, or better potential, than
do the Cougars.
I think ranking the Utes that high is a little crazy... But I believe that Utah
can be that good. I don't think they have earned the right to be ranked in the
top 25 yet, but they can work their way up to lose to BYU. Go Cougs
Suddenly the arrogant BYU fans who claim Ute fans as merely BYU haters are now
the ones doing the hating. How quickly the tables can turn. It's
funny that when a similar story came out about Athlon sports magazine
pre-ranking the Cougs #14 there was a bevy of posts from BYU fans citing the
indisputable legitimacy of Athlon sports magazine. But when one of its main
competitors (Phil Steele) comes out with a similar poll pumping up the Utes its
credibility comes into question. Life isn't made of double standards ladies and
gentlemen, no matter what BYU fans would have you believe.
If any of the byu fans read the Phil Steele magazine they would have notice what
he said: BYU ONLY HAS 3 RETURNING STARTERS ON DEFENSE! Byu may have all of their
offense returning but it is defense that wins games. Byu had the best defense in
the league last year and still LOST two games and was close to losing
4/5(TCU,UCLA,Utah) games last year! When byu plays teams with
athletic defenses they struggle, ie Arizona,UTAH and UCLA(twice last year)! 17
points that "great offense" was held to against UCLA twice and Utah, but last
year it didn't matter because byu defense held the other teams lower than 17
points. What happens this year when Washington/UCLA/TCU/UTAH all keep byu under
20 points? Then Washington/UCLA/TCU/UTAH all score over 30 points on one the the
worst defenses in the league? =2/3/or4 loses. That is right: "byu
will outscore their opponents!" Just like Tulsa '07, TCU'05,.... it must suck to
score more than 50+ points and still lose!!For those fans who want
ESPN quality comments:Todd Mcshay pick Utah to win the conference and beat byu!
Can't we all just get along? Give the Utes a doughnut, like UNLV did last year
and I'm sure they will settle down!
"Yes byu won last year but if it was not for the 4th and 18 play utah would have
a 9 game winning streak going into the preseason"If only, but...what you're conveniently forgetting is that Utah never lead during the
entire game until 1:34 left in the 4th and only held the lead for 56 sec.BYU's turnovers deep in the blue zone and missed field goals are what
kept the game close on the scoreboard.BYU dominated in every other
facet of the game, except kicking.First downs - BYU 21 Utah 14Net yards - BYU 424 Utah 244Rush yards - BYU 155 Utah 115Pass
yards - BYU 269 Utah 129Utah the better team? Definitely NOT last
year and pure speculation this year. Utah will be improved, but so
will BYU.Jamie Hill will work wonders with BYU's defense. I'm not in
the least bit worried that BYU won't have a solid defense this year, together
with a high-powered offense and a MUCH improved kicking game.
Outside of Provo nobody cares about BYU, they finally beat a not very good UCLA
team in their second try, a team that an inconsistent, not so great Utah team
stomped. Both teams are going to be good going into next season, preseason polls
don't mean anything (Michigan ranked #4 in 2007). The fact both teams are ranked
in this poll is good for both of them. But BYU in the BCS is something they have
to earn, something they've failed to do so far. I can't wait for November! GO
show em what you got!! and Byu better watch out for UCLA as they will pay!
Utah is going down hill? Are you kidding?Utah has won 7, 8, & 9
games the last three years. Anyone can see that Utah is trending upward. BYU
on the otherhand peaked at 11-2 the last two years and with all of the players
they lost on defense, they are most likely on the way down this year. How does 8-5 sound for the cougars? Very realistic.Probable
losses at Washington, home vs. UCLA, home vs. New Mexico, at TCU on a short
week, and at Utah after playing on the road at Air Force. Utah on
the other hand is very likely going to win 10+ games this year. Their only real possible losses are at rebuilding Michigan, home to Oregon
State on a short week, at New Mexico after a bye, home to TCU on a short week,
and home to BYU of course. Utah is likely going to be favored in all of these
games and for good reason too.
I am a Y fan but I think this is great. I know we will have a great year.
Think of the Y/U game at the end of the year. Our schedule does lack a little
strength and this game would help. Plus the Y/U rivalry has been one of the
best in the nation lately and this game would further help it along. Our
conference lacks respect and this ranking of #14 for the U (if true) would help.
Look, if we are as good as we think we will be it should be a W. This year
should be a lot of fun. I hope the U goes undefeated and lose to the Y.
Its the Harris Poll, and if your going to act like you know what your talking
about, atleast figure out how to spell it
I believe in anything that ruffles the Cougs' feathers is a good thing.
Afterall, how can the Cougs be so great when they have downsized their level of
comptetion so that the average winning percentage of the teams they'll play this
year was below 50% last year. It's called pathetic scheduling. I'm sorry, when
you brag that Washington is your best nonconference game and they were terrible
last year, then you have issues with scheduling. That's one way to get noticed,
to do what Hawaii did last year and then get their butts kicked at the end of
the year (@ Rice Eccles Stadium, might I add).
Fans, you guys are ridiculous. If you don't know who Phil Steele is then you
aren't a college football fan. He has an annual college football magazine that
is one of the most informative. Rankings are guesses. The Celtics weren't
predicted to do much before the season but they came out on top. Keep crying Cougar fans
This should create excitement that both teams are geting respect... instead the
supposedly great "football fans" of BYU are showing how disconnected they are
from the college football scene. If you discount this ranking because you have
never heard of Phil Steele then you are a college football idiot. Preseason
polls typically aren't worth much more than publicity but that publicity can go
a long way if the teams start off the season backing it up. Especially when the
pub comes from someone like Phil Steele. That carries a lot of weight.
grumpolman,BYU plays in Logan this year too. The polls mean nothing
because both Utah and BYU will lose in Logan. Ok, maybe they wont. But a guy
can dream. Go aggies!
Being in the top 20 is common for the Cougs. I can see why the utes are so
excited, it's their first ranking all year. By the way, 4 & 18
didn't win the game. It only got a first down. You still had a chance to win
that game and you blew it. I don't know why utah thinks they are going to run
into the BCS, they are the most hated team in the MWC. Every team saw onside
kick when up by 40. The league is tired of you popping off when you've done no
better than third place with Whitt. You run your mouth but never back it up.
I.e. shut out at UNLV.
The Utehs rule and we should be ranked in the top 10. Phil needs to do some
homework or something like such as. Go Utehs, I need to get back to
the counter to take some orders.
Before you ignorant cougs make yourselves look any more foolish, please google
Phil Steele. You will find that his preseason magizine is one of the largest and
most respected of it's kind. Out of curiosity, I researched the magazines end of
year accounting statement. 11.2 million in gross revenue from the preseason
football magazine alone. All of you saying that you have never heard of him are
just embarrasing yourselves. Millions do read the magazine, the accounting
numbers prove it. Please stop being ignorant Cougar fans.
The only polls that matter are the USA today, AP coaches poll and the Harrison
poll. Because the coaches poll and the Harrison poll along with some computer
polls determine the BCS poll. Do yewet fans really think that they will be
ranked in either the AP poll or the Coaches preseason poll? Phil Steels polls
are made to sale magazines but they will have no influence on the AP and USA
today preseason polls. Utah will be an honorable mention in both of these
polls at the bottom of others receiving votes and BYU will be ranked in the top
25. Utah being ranked in this poll is laughable given the UNLV game last year
and looking at the ND ranking. And yes being ranked higher is an advantage if
you win your games. To make the BCS you need a final ranking of 12 in the BCS.
To have any shot at a national championship (which is only a pipe dream for a
MWC team) a MWC team would need a preseason ranking of probably 12 or higher and
still need teams ahead of them to lose. Cougars!!!
BYU fans... relax... it's just a preseason poll. Utah fans... it's
a good sign, but it's just a preseason poll.Geesh, don't y'all have
jobs that you need to get to? Cheers (as I have to get back to
Not only is the Utah ranking ridiculous, but how in the world is Notre Dame in
the ranking? I think he just put a bunch of school names in a hat and pulled
them out at random.
I've got seven chair seats on rows 39 and 40 in Rice Eccles for my fall football
games. Can't wait to celebrate the victory over BYU and the preacher Bronco in
byu fans- First of all, like it was said earlier, phil steel's magazine is the
best college football preseason magazing and is well respected around the
nation, that includes espn. I totally agree with the ranking, utah is the better
team! Yes byu won last year but if it was not for the 4th and 18 play utah would
have a 9 game winning streak going into the preseason. Utah gets back basically
everyone on offense, and has one of the best secondaries in the nation
returning. The truth is that byu gets a great offense back, but it really
hurting on defense. What happens one game if byu's offense struggles a couple
games, can the defense be there to pick them up like last year? We will just
have to see. . . GO UTES!!
Thanks D.N. for finally giving us something to fight about, the last few weeks
have been pretty dry. However, regardless of how you feel, I would
really like to hear the rational from this "expert" that nobody has heard of.
Wow, talk about ignorant Cougar fan. Any half way intelligent football fan can
see Utah has a much more difficult schedule this year. And this is coming from a
BYU fan. Please think before you say something like that, and make the rest of
us look stupid.
For anyone acting ignorant and saying "who is Phil Steele?" SHAME ON YOU if you
consider yourself a real college football fan. Throughout the country Steele is
very well known and respected, and yearly publishes an in depth magizine of
College Football, viewed with much respect by millions of fans, coaches,
players, and AP writers you send in their AP top 25 ballots come August.
it would be interesting if the utes are favored over michigan at the start of
The cougars program is on the rise and the utes are going downhill, when the
cougs win in RES that is what really matters.
Good to see both schools getting some respect. Probably a little high for both
schools (I would say BYU #21, Utah #24), but at the end of the day, being
mentioned in one of the country's biggest preseason college football magazines
is an honor for both schools. All the BYU fans freaking out on here should calm
down. I'm seeing a BoM pride-cycle coming on in Provo if you're not more
careful. You are one big hit on Max Hall away from going 7-5. Be humble and
respectful, and your team will have a great season.
To say Utah has a tougher schedule when they are playing both Utah State and
Weber State is like saying my girls friend is beter looking because she has less
zits. Who cares about pre-season rankings it's the final rankings that matter
and they don't even matter that much.
Re: Stupid Comments, yours aren't much brighter. BYU actually has a tougher
schedule than your Little Red Ladies. Weber State ring a bell? Plus all the
best MWC teams at home. I know you like to bag on BYU because they are playing
N Iowa, but I like how all you Ute fans conveniently forget that you are playing
Weber State. And Michigan is breaking in a new coach and quarterback. That
should be a win. But here's to having two quality teams gutting it out for the
MWC Championship and the right to a BCS Bowl. GO MIGHTY COUGARS!!
Utah returns a balance of starters on both sides of the ball, with most of their
offense coming back. I BYU only returns 3 defensive starters from a
defense that was directly responsible for winning half of BYU's games last
year.Utah has a more favorable conference schedule than BYU. It is
very possible that Utah will end up with a better record than BYU this year.Utah 34 BYU 23Go Utes!!
I don't think anybody should be paying attention to this poll. Forget where BYU
and Utah are ranked, he has Notre Dame in the top 25 and how did they do last
year?????? Why did the Dnews print this???
Well if the Yewtes are 14th, then UNLV should be number 1, since they SHUTOUT, I
said SHUTOUT the hapless Yewtes who were "afraid" to tackel their running back.
Did I say UNLV SHUTOUT!!!! the hapless yewtes??
How many Games did Notre Dame win last year. How could they possibly be in
someone's top 25. It doesn't lend much validity to this poll
I doubt BYU or Utah should be in the top 20, but it sure is fun to see the BYU
fans melt down at the thought. Actually, it doesn't surprise me that Utah is
ranked ahead of BYU. They had a tough time due mainly to injuries and still came
back and had a good season. If they stay healthy... well that is always the key.
BYU is one injury away from the season Utah had last year. Injury or not, my
guess is that BYU will start off 1-2 and that will burst the bubble right there.
P.S. I am amazed that some BYU fans still haven't gotten over the fact that
Whittingham turned them down. Come on guys.
You Cougar fans are really showing your ignorance here. Phil Steele puts out the
biggest Preseason College Football Magazines in the country, that is read
nation-wide by millions. Why would Utah be ranked over BYU in these
rankings? Several reasons, the first of which is the schedule. Utah has a
realistic shot at beating a down Michigan team in the opener, and then has BYU
and TCU at home this year. Do you Cougar fans really think your team
is that much better than a Utah team that has had a lead on you with a minute to
go in the last minute for two consecutive years? Yes, the comebacks were amazing
and you should enjoy them; but BYU has by no means dominated this matchup. It also should be remembered that last year Utah lost it's best QB (BJ),
best RB (Asiata), best WR (Casteel), best OL (Boone), best LB (Jianonni), and
best DL (Long) for significant amounts of time to injury. Be honest with
yourself zoobs; would the Cougs fair as well without Hall, Collie, Reynolds,
Unga, Jorgenson, Nixon? Don't think so. Both teams should be tough
this year. Show some respect, not blind ignorance.
Look, now one knows who Phil Steele is is a fine comment, but to state that
because Bronco said "(Qwest?)quest for perfection" that such will be true has
got to be one of the most ignorant comments I've ever heard...BYU
has the easier schedule of the two teams which might add to such a quest, but
remember getting out of the MWC undefeated will not be easy for any team this
year. TCU, Utah & BYU all have good teams capable of upsetting anyone. Health
is always an issue as well, look at the Utes, they had a great team last year
but then lost several key players and ended up having a respectable year. So,
having said that, if both teams stay healthy it will be a great game. Now
before anymore of you BYU fans make such ignorant comments, please read, re-read
and then post a comment that is not as ignorant as some of your hypocritical
buddies. GO UTES!!
Wow, there really is nothing to do but fantasize about sports right now...50 days to the olympics...74 days to college football...Whatever will we do, but daydream and bicker for the rest of the
summer?Oh, there is always baseball or soccer. NAH!
Don't take the Utes lightly. The Utes could surprise a lot of people
this year, like they did against UCLA last season, or they could have another
one of those up and down seasons where they drop a couple like the did against
UNLV.I'm waiting to see how they do against Michigan.Regardless, they'll probably be BYU's toughest game this year.I'll
post my pre-season rankings in August when more people are tuned in to football.
nice ranks. lol love it! keep cryin zoobs. its funny
It's nice to see a couple of MWC teams ranked in a pre-season poll, but, as I've
said before, pre-season rankings are meaningless because nobody really knows how
good the teams are until they've played a few games.Until then, it's
just on-paper guess work.I would like to know who Phil Steele is and
his rationale for his rankings. Maybe we can get an update from a brave soul
willing to shell out a few bucks to read Phil's magazine.I would
have ranked BYU about 14th and Utah about 20th. Ohio St. should be the
Love to see both Utah schools garner a little respect nationally. Hope it is
that way come November. How about a matchup with both the Cougs
and the Utes undefeated and in the Top 10 battling for a place in a BCS bowl
with combined victories over UCLA, Michigan, Washington, Boise, etc. The first
two or three Saturdays of the season will be important for both squads. Would
love to see the Utes go into the Big House and come away with a victory. And what will be even sweeter is a Cougar win in RES that will burst the
BCS dreams of the Kyle and the boys and propel the mighty Cougs back into
national prominence. All the best to both teams in the upcoming
I love my Utes, but 14? Come on. Who's Phil Steele, anyway?
The Utes couldn't wipe the boots of the top 20 teams. Who is even coming back
for Utah this year? BYU at least has their QB, best WR, best TE, best RB. Utah
is due to get a dose of reality at Ann Arbor as well while BYU plays Washington
and NE Iowa (not close). Look for BYU to win the MWC and Utah to be 3rd or
4th.And how could LSU go from number 1 to number 14? Not much in
this poll makes sense.
That doesn't even make sense since BYU beat Utah last season and were #1 in the
Who is this guy? Utah 14th? Does he watch football?
man has landed on the moon.
This ranking will last about 1 week (if that) when the U loses to Michigan and
BYU beats a pansy team. Yeah, it's a pansy team but it's a win. Utah, however,
will drop out of the top 25 and won't see it again for the rest of the season.
For a team that returns almost all of it's offense from a team that finished in
the top 15 last year and BYU is ranked behind Utah? How many starters are Utah
returning?Anyways, that would be cool if the rankings hold up. It
makes for a great finale for the Mountain West Conference championship. Too bad
two ranked teams will be playing for the championship on The Mountain.
Phil Steele is an idiot. Ranking The yewts at all is stupidity let alone ahead
of the Cougars. He took an over dose of his medication.Go cougars!!!!
Let's see, a team that finished in the top 15 and returns 10 of 11 starters on
offense should be ranked lower than a team that finished where? Please, Phil
Steele shows his bias here. THere is no justifiable football reason to rank the
Utes ahead of the Cougs. On paper the Utes are certainly not as strong as BYU.
Oh yeah, and which team won the past two seasons in head to head competition and
won the conference? Switch the two around and Phil may be on to something, but I
wouldn't put the Utes in the top 25 of college football quite yet. Let's see
how they do at Michigan first.
Could you imagine a season in which both teams go into Rice Eccles
undefeated?!I know, too much to ask, but that would be incredible.
And if they did, starting the year higher in the polls like this that would mean
that by the time they get to November both teams would certainly be in the top
ten, and the winner would be guaranteed a BCS bid! That would be
world class football right here in Utah! And of course, they have
that charity golf game between Utah and BYU coaches that goes back to Lavelle
Edwards and Ron McBride. The loser in Golf has won in football since Mendenhall
and Wittingham have taken over.So that means that BYU wins in
November and goes BCS hunting. And Utah whips some chump PAC10 team in Las
Vegas.Getting ahead of myself but this could be a great season if
both teams play consistent and stay focused.Of course, go BYU!
This will be great for the Utes...until two weeks into the season when they lose
5 in a row - it's the Whittingham way! Pre-season polls mean nothing. Go Cougs!
Nobody told Phil about the great Bronco Mendenhall and his quote of the year
"qwest for perfection." How could this be, Utes ranked ahead of BYU next year?
BCS is what every cougar fan dreams of, something the Utes already accomplished.
Could it be the year of the UTES returning to the BCS!!!!!!!
As with all that was said about the earlier polls, these mean nothing.
Who is Phil Steele?Never heard of him or his rankings.
An 11 and 0 BYU team will DEFINITELY be the underdog when they go to visit the 8
and 3 Utes at L.E.N. Stadium!
Who's this guy? Utah ranked higher than byu? Utah ranked at all? What a joke
The Phil Steele Poll? Get real. Why not wait for the AP or USA Today poll to run
Looks like BYU will be the underdog at Rice-Eccles in November. Can't
