National Zoo gets $4.5 million for panda breeding

    Ah the Panda... one of nature's more spectacular failures. The species would have died out decades ago if it were not for man's interference. It's a carnivore that doesn't eat meat. An animal that subsists completely on bamboo, which is mostly fiber and water. It eats, it poops, it sleeps... that's pretty much the extent of Panda existence. They can't even reproduce fast enough to offset the number that die every year.

    In nature species come and go. Adapt to an ever changing world or die. Some animals are very successful at this, and some are not. At what point is man justified in spending millions to keep animals alive and at what point should we let nature take its course?

    Just something to ponder.
