Not allowing them to vote for their own players doesn't make much sense since their own players may be the best in the region. How would that solve the problem we now experience?

Not sure that makes much sense because each team is allocated a certain number of players based upon where they finish. So if there is a set amount from each team, then a coach would know which of his own players are most deserving of the honor better than an opposing coach would.

Maybe a better approach to letting the coaches vote on the all-region teams, would be to not allow them to vote for their own players.

    re: Eagle and Sam

I guess thats why many kids are left off. Feel bad for the kids that are more deserving as High School is only once. Speaking of your Timpview FiaefuSam...

your QB had better stats than both the First Team All Staters from both papers and way better than the second team All Staters. He was right behind Chase Hanson and DJ Nelson. And you mention your kicker. He was good also. How can they not be included? I guess it is your Coaches decision from what has been said. It seems wierd a Coach wouldnt nominate his kids that are deserving but like the Coach in Region 5 said-question them I guess.

I only watched Timpview and those teams they played, so I'm very prejudiced toward them. Good discussion... Thanks

The Daily Herald will do an all-valley team. Not without some controversy, it's selections though are from an objective source whose staff has seen all the teams. Usually, they get it pretty close to right.

And as I said before all regions do their own thing, and in Region 8 I'm pretty sure the coaches chose their own players. In Region 5 they might put more effort into it but most regions they don't and no other coaches are going to veto another coach's selections from his own team. Having followed Utah County Region 8 pretty closely I would have selected a lot of different players but so it goes.

Thanks, Coach. That explains the disparity in the whole system. Would that other regions could see the importance or value of this honor. Maybe there might be a better way to show equality or just forget it altogether. Maybe leave the all-region stuff to the local papers like the Standard Examiner, Provo Herald, Tooele Transcript-Bulletin, Logan Herald Journal and the Washington County times. Of course, those in the Basin and the smaller schools would get no honor, but it's probably seldom that they do anyway.

Do people read the comments prior to posting or do they just post whatever comes to mind?! WoW!

All-Region selections are done differently from region to region, 1A-5A. It's got absolutely nothing to do with 5A talent vs. 4A talent and so on...

The fact that Region 5 has a lot of nominees is up to the coaches in Region 5, as it should be. Who's to say that one region should have more votes than another? If you don't like how it's done in 'your' repective region, contact 'your' coach.

And yes FaifeauSam, Region 5 coaches do make the time to meet and talk about each and every position...

I thought I read somewhere that the coaches were given a ballot after nominations and they then selected whoever they thought should be honored. The nominating process would allow the head coach to chose his own players because he knows them best and has watched them through weeks of practice and at least 10 games. Why does the first place team get 8 selections as UC Baller suggests? If an individual player is outstanding on a weak team, that doesn't make him a less-than outstanding player within the region. Maybe he's one of the few who made the team shine on occasion. For the record there were 13 Logan players listed on the Region 5 All-Region team while only 6 Timpview players names appear on the Region 8 roster and 10 East High players head the Region 6 roster. In 5A there are only 9 Lone Peak players' names which appear on the Region 4 team. Does that mean 4A is stronger than 5A?

Of course region selections have to be done by coaches, but do we think that they have the time or make/take the time to concentrate on every position. I'm beginning to think that all this hype about All-State and All-Region is just a way to sell more papers; although it does look good on a potential recruit's resume when he/she is trying to attract the attention of college coaches.

Personally, I like the Trib All-State selections as being more realistic and more quality based. Let's see if they do an All-Region poll, too.

Again, going on my kick about honoring the kickers in 4A, I'd like to point out that of the top eight kickers in 4A, only four are listed on their teams as All-Region, the first, fourth, seventh and eighth place finishers, ignoring the second, third, fifth and sixth? This may be sound like sour grapes, but if we're going to honor the players, certainly the kickers deserve some praise and recognition.

region selections by coaches makes more sense as they are more familiar with the players by position. Week to week during region play these are the kids that make a difference in team play and region standings. Unlike the Trib selections where it's more a political popularity show and positions are created or assigned to get kids on by school regardless of performance or stats.

After additional research, this popularity poll is still a mystery. Does the first place team in the state get to list all of its players as All-Region? Why does Region 5 have MVPs in every position and other regions have so few? It appears that some of the coaches havent taken their job very seriously or they dont worry about how they crush the psyche of some of their players. If its up to the coaches, you would think they would take this final chance to honor and build up their players before the rest of the state. There are a number of quality players (albeit not seniors) who deserve to be on these lists. Do the coaches have the time or the inclination to delegate one of their assistants to do the research? I know they are busy teaching classes, but this is important to these young charges.

Do they print both 2nd Team or Honorable mention at all? Does anyone know?

    Dec. 6, 2011 7:33 a.m.

I agree with Sam, the All State selections have become a joke. I see players that only played one or two games the ENTIRE season getting all region and all state honorable mentions?????? Come on....

It's still a total sham and should be done away with if there is not some consistency and value to the program.

Eagle is right, coaches decide these, not the newspaper. The coaches in each region decide which format to use, which is why different regions have different ways that they put these teams together

UC Baller: This is done by the coaches, not the D-News. The first place team gets 8 selections, 7 selections for the next team, 6 selections for the third place and so on. I wouldn't be surprised if the head coach of team chooses his own selections...

How the DNews has turned into a joke. The Region 8 selections are really off. Lets not look at stats or performance, but rather a blind draw. Cmon DNews, you are better than that.

    Dec. 5, 2011 7:10 p.m.

This is more of a joke than the All-State was. There is no consistency among the regions and that could be the fault of the coaches or of the DesNews sports staff. Why does Region 5 have numerous positions and honors and the other regions have only a few? If these players are to be honored, it should be an honor and not just an honorarium. If it's going to be handled that way, why not just list every senior on each team and forget about the quality or stats of the individual players?

Um... Lawson Toomer is on a Mission in Africa, although his little brother Lantzen Toomer played for Morgan this year. I think that this is a mistake on All Region for Region 11 from Morgan.
