For those of you that are crying about the helmet to helmet call have to fall into one of two categories: 1) Don't understand football or 2) Are East fans and are looking for something to make them feel better about losing the game. Have you all looked at the replay? Clearly helmet to helmet - no question! If you want to question a play that could have changed the outcome of the game - look to the decision to punt on 4th and 1. Ya - it would have been a gutty call. Ya - would have given Logan the ball in field goal range if they don't get the 1st down. But - with athletes like Cook and Molisi - I would take my chances with them getting 1 yard versus giving the ball back to Logan...

P.S. Braxton, decided the outcome of the game... that play was on a 3rd and 6 as I recall. To follow your inductive logic, Logan still had at least another down and who is to say that the TD pass wouldn't have happened on the next play?!

  • Big Hapa Kaysville, UT
    Nov. 22, 2011 10:35 a.m.

Dumb comment Braxton. The ref saw and called a helmet to helmet. Would you rather him not call it? A no call would have been inappropriate not the fact that he called an infraction of the rules right in front of him. You would hope that call would be made 10 out of 10 times. For all of you fixated on one call in view of this entire game, I'll bet most of you have found one event in your lives that you have pin pointed to blame all your woes on. Sad commentary for you all.

The bottom line is, this game will always be tainted because of the call. Most people I have talked to (even some in Cache County) believe the ref made a very bold call that 7 out of 10 times the call would not be made. The fact that it decided the outcome of the game, (without the call, the game belonged to East) The game will always be tainted. And that is a shame to both sides and more to East.

I keep hearing about the cheap shots, I would like to know when? There were two that were called on east, one on a kick-off that a player drilled the kicker when the ball went out of the end zone, and the other on the last play. I didn't see the hit or what led up to it, but I did see Logan's #56 go flying long after the pass was made. I am one that hates seeing cheap shots, so if you could point out where that would kind of clarify things.

Logan won. Twice. You can argue better team lost or referees, but those are the arguments of losers.

East was good and played their best possible gameplan as best they could. Logan was outcoached.

East deserved to be there. But Logan was the better team.

  • grizzpapa LOGAN, UT
    Nov. 21, 2011 11:46 a.m.

The call was a personal foul for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The ref called what he saw and since he was 10 feet away, I'm going with his view and his opinion of the helmet-to-helmet contact over a fan that is 50 yards away and probably doesn't have technical understanding of the rule.

These are the best HS officials calling the game, so unless you are saying that underneath the striped referee shirt, the ref had on his LHS t-shirt and was a plant by the UHSAA to make sure that Logan won, then I don't really know what you are saying.

Perhaps you are just saying that East deserved to win because they shut down one of the great offenses in the state. Perhaps because they held Logan under 20 points?

On the other hand, East never found the end zone and had the ball for 33 of 48 minutes, but in the end went 3 and out and gave Logan the ball a midfield with 2:09 to play.

Who doesn't think Favero wins if you give him that?

It never comes down to just one play or just one call.

  • Mr. Universe Midvale, UT
    Nov. 21, 2011 11:11 a.m.

This definitely was a great game. Both teams played hard. But to say that East is the better team and should have won doesn't make sense. I was at the game and saw the helmet to helmet hit live and it was the right call to throw the flag. If that play had happened in the first quarter and a flag was thrown would people have complained about it? Probably not. If you'd call it in the 1st quarter you have to call it in the 4th quarter. But just like others have said, after that penalty East still let Logan get behind their defense and score on a deep pass. Who's to say Logan wouldn't have done that if the penalty wasn't called? There are so many plays that can be scrutinized and say what if, but that's why you've got to finish out the entire game. East played great, but give Logan credit for fighting to the finisha and making the plays when it counted.

grizzpapa I'm not here to discredit East but as a fan who showed up and saw the end of the East-Logan game I should point ot one glaring thing. Logan would have lost the game if it hadn't been for the roughing the passer against DJ Nelson. That was not roughing the passer. For crying out loud the defender was less than a yard away when he threw it and all he did was shove him out of the way. Logan is amazing but East deserved to win. No doubt about it.

  • grizzpapa LOGAN, UT
    Nov. 21, 2011 9:01 a.m.

No one should be discrediting the effort and quality of this terrific East team by blaming this on the refs.

East came to the game as well prepared as any team Logan faced all year. Their defense gave the Logan offense fits all day long and very nearly shut them down.

The story here is the Logan defense. They also came to the came incredibly prepared and the executed perfect assignment defense against the East triple option all day long.

    Logan Defense:
    1. On the field for 33 of the 48 minutes of the game and never gave up despite the offense putting them in bad situations time after time.
    3. Holds East out of the end zone despite the fact that East had scored no fewer than 3 TD's every game this season.
    4. Holds the tandem of Cook and Molisi to a combined 40 carries for 86 yards. That is a 2 yard average per carry compared to both of them averaging 6 yards per carry all season.
    5. Gave the Logan offense a chance to go win it at the end.

Great battle by two great teams!

    Jo Momma,

All 3A schools best chance of winning against the top
4A or 5A schools are the beginning of the season. If Huuricane played any of the finalists in the other games, they would have been blown out. Fremont and East would have pounded worn them out on the ground by the 3rd quarter where as Logan and LP would have hung 40 by halftime.
Ursua had 10 times the talent and coaches at Westlake and he never got out the first round in 4A. He almost singlehandedly won 3A on his own.
With enough film on these 3A teams at seasons end, even aherriman would beat Hurricane by at least 2 TD's at season's end. It's the same as college when 1-AA teams surprise bigger schools. It wouldn't happen at year's end.

The out come of a game is never in the ref's hands, with that said if a game is that close that a single no call or bad call can impact an out come then that is on the team for keeping an opponent within close striking distance to win.

To certify an unquestionable victory one needs to separate convincingly on the score board dispelling all doubt on the games outcome.

That did not happen and Logan prevailed.

East you guy's are a terrific team and your season was awesome. Nothing here at all the be ashamed of.

The Grizz are 14-0 enough said.

I took my dually to watch all of the games Friday. I tell you what, Desert Hills could have competed with any of the 4A or 5A teams. I think the DH line would out weigh the 4A or 5A lines. Hurricane could have beaten them all this year. Probably not any other year, but this year.....yes. Cedar should have won it all.

To the people saying that the helmet-to-helmet foul was not really dangerous and shouldn't have been called, how is a ref supposed to judge if a particular hit is dangerous or not? The only logical call a ref can make to 1) protect both players and 2)discourage these kinds of hits, is to call the foul when it happens. The ref made the correct call.

What happened after the call you can chalk up to a great play made by a great team. Congrats to Logan, especially the defense. Great game by by both teams.

you complained, lastly: "Lastly i couldn't help but notice Logan's quarterbacks Dad and Brother roaming the sidelines. Imagine if every player on the team's family felt it was there privilege because of who they were to be on the sideline. Just some thoughts to consider. I'm much more an east fan after thisgamethanaloganfan."

Well, his dad is an orthopedic surgeon and has helped care for the team, for free for over a decade, and has roamed the sidelines for that decade. His older brother, Riley, has been coaching him since they were kids--and has been on the sideline coaching him every game this season that he could. That is part of the reason DJ is so good.

Do ya feel a little sheepish now? Like a whiner?

I won't tell the East kids that the helmet to helmet call cost them the game, instead, I'd give them a list:
    1. 0 touchdowns in four attempts in red zone.
    2. 2 turnovers
    3. too many personal foul penalties
    4. kept letting receivers get open behind them until Logan finally connected.
    5. They were playing the best team in the State.

  • dafishon Layton, UT
    Nov. 19, 2011 2:31 p.m.

Since I'm sure that "the qb's dad and brother" won't bother to explain, I will. The QB's dad also happens to be a very fine orthopedic surgeon. As well as his official capacity as team doctor he spends countless hours providing (often free) medical help to these boys. He is the first one on the field when one of these boy's goes down and I have watched him leave games where his boy's are still playing to care for others. He has performed countless operations on athletes at Logan High for years. We are lucky to have him there. As for his brother. How could anyone not understand his value to the team? As well as being an excellent role model, he is one of the finest coaches and mentor any team could hope to have involved with their kids..

I think you are reaching when you try to make an issue out of this. It was a tough game and either team could have won. It's always tough when in the end things don't go your way. One team had to win. East kicked field goals and Logan scored touchdowns when they needed them. Deal with it

    Nov. 19, 2011 1:39 p.m.

Great game Logan you guys deserve it! The team with the least mistakes won the game. Kind of hard to give East credit when a lot of people on here aren't giving Logan any credit at all. That helmet to helmet was the right call, and East had plenty of opportunities to score a touchdown but didn't. Logans defense was very stout and was the main reason they won. Logan 2011 4A State Champions. Congratulations.

@whoisthisguy, its pretty clear that you weren't a Logan fan to begin with. I don't think this game really changed anything. As for the penalty... If East gets a first down the series before it doesn't matter, or if they put the ball in the end zone on numerous opportunities it doesn't matter. A game never comes down to a single call or play "anybody that has ever played football and isn't completely biased knows that."

Wow! What an incredible game yesterday. Props to EAST! They really came to play and played hard. Defense was intense. Great Job!
Logan way to go! Defense was incredible. Bend but don't break. Held East to no Touchdowns! Came up with big plays to set up the O and stop Easts' drives. I was sure East had pulled off the upset but The Logan O came up big time when it mattered most.
    Great game both teams.

IMHO the Helmet to Helmet call was the correct call. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion but I'm not the one wearing the stripes and neither are you.

TO:1469CVSport- COOK did not flop. The momentum of the play caused him to trip and stumble over the defender. I agree it was a good no call but let's not accuse a young man of something he didn't do.

All the young men on both teams played a great physical well fought game. WOW!
    Thanks for the battle.

lhs_grizz04 thanks for sharing with us all your many accolades. Your comment on the helmet to helmet call is so much more reputable... Anybody that has ever played football and isn't acting completely biased knows that was a terrible call. I agree that dangerous blatant helmet to helmet calls should be called regardless of the situation or time in the game. I watched that play on KJazz and there was no dangerous play, he put his hands up to try and knock down the pass and because his arms were up his facemask hit the logan quarterbacks helmet. Blatant dangerous play... i don't think so. A gift undeserving to logan, yes. Result "state championship." Those of you that think it was a good call. Go tell the east kid his "blatant dangerous helmet to helmet hit" cost his teammates and best friends their dreams of winning a state championship. Lastly i couldn't help but notice Logan's quarterbacks Dad and Brother roaming the sidelines. Imagine if every player on the team's family felt it was there privilege because of who they were to be on the sideline. Just some thoughts to consider. I'm much more an east fan after thisgamethanaloganfan.

East outplayed Logan and out coached them. However, though the helmet to helmet violation was a foolish mistake that allowed the game winning drive to stay alive it did not guarantee nor execute a perfectly thrown pass to pull out the win. Congrats to both teams, truly a great game. The referees were a non-factor, with missed calls and non-calls on both sides. Cook had a great flop in front of his bench trying to implicate the Logan defender, what a good non-call. Who won? The team that scored touchdowns not field goals. Who won? The team that had a few penalties, not multiple personal fouls (a trait of East High that showed up at game's end). Who won? The team that executed when it mattered most (4 and out for Logan's defense, then great blocking, a great pass, and a great pass route for Logan's offense). The field is 100 yards long and the game is 48 minutes, not 85 yards or 47 minutes 24 seconds. That's why I love the game of football. Who played a great football game? Both teams. It truly was a championship game. East should stand proud. Logan has every reason to celebrate loudly and I'm sure is doing so. And who is the MVP? Logan's defense, every last one of them.

I am from out of state and don't have ties to either program, but I got to see the game live and both teams deserve credit. Good throw by the Logan quarterback in a tough spot to win the game. Awesome to watch the East defense shut down a team that scored in the range of 35 ppg all season. The refs had some mind boggling calls and no calls. I agree that helmet to helmet is roughing the passer but how is a Logan linebacker blowing up an east player 15 seconds after a play right in front of a ref not a penalty? Logan took advantage of opportunities that were handed to them but some of their players showed little to no class and they needed the refs to help them win the game.

No blowout. A surprise. Bigger surprise: who has the best defense? Logan.

East ground down the field, keeping the Logan offense off of it. But, when it came to the red zone, all those athletic 250+ pound big East boys couldn't punch through. 30:00 of offense= 9 points no touchdowns.

Logan 15:00; 18 points, two touchdowns. Several very closely missed long passes could have blown the game open...but perhaps they were missed because of unusual pressure on the qb.

East lineman and blitzing backs were all over Nelson--props to them for outplaying Logan's O-Line, but, once Nelson figured it out in the 4th quarter...lights out, his recievers do not miss opportunities.

I may have been a loud mouth but I'll admit I'm proud of Logan. It was closer then anyone up North thought it would be. Look at the score. But Logan was the better team. Will the Logan fan's say anything nice about East. They put up a huge fight and it could have gone to them. Great job Logan but we all know what this means for next year.
