Wow, Utes didn't look good at all. I bet they don't win another game all year.

    Defense - very solid.
Kicking game - better than thought - actually very good.
    Special teams - solid.
Running game - pretty good overall with high potential.
Passing game - not so much.

The game scheme cannot be "protect Wynn at all costs" which is what it looks like from the seats. Either he needs to be a football player or the team needs to put in a QB that can be. It's hard to be creative and unpredictable when the defense knows exactly what your QB will be doing on nearly every play.

There are many excellent athletes on the field (including Wynn) - the offense just needs to be opened up and Wynn needs to take more risks.

Good luck to BYU this weekend...show Mississippi what Utah (the state) football is all about.

    Go Utes!

Go Utes! Norm Chow vs. USC next on the big time schedule!

It looks to me like they were already focusing on USC and wanted to phone in the Montana State game. The game was never in doubt because the defense at least took it seriously, but it looked to me like the offense was sleepwalking through the second half.

They need to have a deep passing threat, otherwise USC will be able to collapse down and more effectively stop the run game. They seemed to play-call a really conservative game. I can see some merits of holding some cards to the chest but the benefits of that are only really valid if the game is going smoothly and it sure didn't the second half. At least some questions got answered like that we know running back is probably not going to be a big concern. The new defenders seemed to do alright though they gave up a couple big plays (MSU has a quality QB so that wasn't surprising that he was able to execute at times). The main issue now is with Wynn. He's been able to compete before, even his freshman year when he held his own against Max Hall and then won the bowl game, so he should be capable of working this out somehow.

Yep. utes will turn their focus to USC. The following week they'll then focus on BYU, then Washington, then ASU. You get the idea. Week-in; week-out, much stronger completition than the MWC! But, no worries, the schedule will soften up a bit on Week 10 (UCLA) and Week 11 (Wash. St.). "Beat USC"? We'll see. Only time will tell!!

Wynn, a third year QB shouldn't need to get confidence unless...his arm is really hurt.

I think the spins coming out of fall camp for utah were inflated and not very objective. This is a bad team with a lot, not some, a lot of work to do.

Cougar fans went through the same denial process with Crowton. It was always going to get better with the next game. It never did.

It's not 20 hours of practice, it's 20 hours of football activities. That includes game film and meetings with coaches. It's very easy to spend an additional 2-4 hours hours per day in addition to practice doing those things. I realize you don't know much about the operation either, and obviously about Whittingham. If he could, he would practice full contact every non-gameday except Sunday.

And I'm glad you liked it, you make it too easy on me sometimes.

I agree with Coach Witt, we can't play like this and win in the PAC 12. I also agree with Duckhunter, not too much positive out of that game. They have serious work to do.

As far as not working the weekend. The way I see it is, we're in the PAC 12 now. If we can't get ready for an opponent Monday through Friday, we don't belong. I've heard a lot of coaches (including Wittingham) talk about how important the weely rythm of practice is to get the players ready at the right time. That's why short weeks and trips to Hawaii are tough, because it gets the players outside the normal practice rythm. Also, do any of you have any idea what they do for conditioning? My understanding is the trainers are told by the coaches to push the players harder after disappointing performances. Any one of you want to join the team today for those conditioning drills?

The players may have been focused on MSU but it was obvious that coach Chow was focused on USC, they didn't show anything in their passing game. I'd be surprised if they ran more than 20 different offensive plays. I also think Chow and Whit told Wynn to play safe, but that Wynn took that a little too serious.

    I really hope I'm right.

The team will be ready to go for USC. It will be a tough and competitve game. There were lots of jitters that we got rid of in this game.

Excited about John White and Blechen, and hope the corners can step it up, because it will only get harder as the receivers get quicker.

Wynn will be fine. He didn't make any big mistakes and the biggest problem looked to be confidence. Hope he finds it before next game. No reason for him to doubt his skills, he's proven that he can play big time ball, it just needs to become consistent.

Same old same old. Let's give MSU some credit though. Their QB was good everytime we put pressure on him he just went outside the pocket. I would trade for him right now if we could. The offense was so vanilla that it was boring to watch. We have speed and more speed on the outside so go down the field. White was a stud love the way he runs with pads low. Why when the other back was in did we try a toss sweep. He is a inside runner. I wanted to see the other 2 backs some. Go UTES.

"9er4life you obviously don't understand how college football works. They only have 20 hours per week to spend on football related activities"

And you obviously never learned any math. They have 20 hours per week. This is still the previous week. They had a Thursday game this week so they didn't have enough days to spend 20 hours unless they were going 5 hours per day Sunday through Wednesday. They could still practice this week and have 20 hours next week.

Also I love the reaction to the quote LOL!

    classless Ute fan;
I will have to say that you are very optimistic. Wynn did not look good. Coach left him in the entire game to try and get him going but he never really did anything consistently well. He got worse in the second half. The whole offense looked lethargic with the exception of White but the MSU D was nothing like the Utes will see in the rest of their games this year.
KW is very good at getting his teams ready for the big games. Hopefully he can work some magic and get things turned around for USC.
    Go Utes!

Coach Wittingham will have his team ready for USC! Why? Because he got his football heart, his knowledge, his training and his motivation at BYU! What better resume' could there be?

North Summit 05 - "Utah fans you are the first one's to chime in on any article related to BYU"

I think it is a few far outsiders not "Utah fans" in general. Just like you and Ducky on the other side. The era of Max Hall absolute hate is over.

Try commenting on a game you actually watched.

I thought that the Utes looked great... in the first quarter and most of the second. Yes, Wynn wasn't the best QB on the field tonight. It might be because he didn't get the reps he needed in fall camp. Whatever it was, he needs to get his confidence back.

I think that Whittingham is one of the harshest critics of the team. He know what they need to do to be better. I see Ducky posting a partial comment taken out of context.

North Summit, Christopher didn't throw a punch. He was pushing the player, which is legal. The ref from behind thought he threw a punch and he threw a penalty flag. But the ref from side who could see it well let the other ref know it wasn't a penalty.

    Sept. 2, 2011 12:14 a.m.

Duckhunter is Mr. Context as always. "Coach Kyle Whittingham went a step further and said the Utes "won't win a game in the Pac-12" ... if they play like they did Thursday," I believe was the rest of the quote. When you speak what you wish were true so often, you begin to believe it.

Utah fans you are the first one's to chime in on any article related to BYU that being said seems like you can dish it out but you can't take it when Y fans comment back and everyone with anyone that knows about football should know the U plays like that again they will get beat for sure the U should have had atleast 30 to 40 points and they also lost a few penalties on stupid plays Christopher throwing punches but a win is a win just saying they have to clean it up against USC if they intend to win.

    Sept. 1, 2011 11:50 p.m.

9er4life you obviously don't understand how college football works. They only have 20 hours per week to spend on football related activities. Lifts and conditioning are conducted by the strength and conditioning staff and do not count towards that. Whit's old school. Believe me, if he had things his way, any day they don't have a game, they would be practicing in full pads until each and every one of them is as tough as he is. A lift and conditioning session is the best thing they can legally do to stay focused on the week ahead.

"Whittingham said the team would watch film of the game Friday and lift weights and condition before taking the weekend off."

Hmm...I think they should practice the whole weekend to prep for USC. There's no indication from this game that the Utes are ready for USC. Offense needs a lot of work. Wynn looked terrible with his throws. The offense really need to put in the extra work.
