As a matter of fact Derek did play for Sparta when he was U-11.

As a parent who watched Derek play on the same team and then on the opposing team, I want to say that he is a great kid and comes from a good supportive family. My son was a defender and has the utmost respect for him. He is crafty and a hard working midfielder. He is comfortable on the ball and makes good decisions. Against our team, who was very good defensively, almost all of the goals his team scored came from Derek's creativity. Derek good luck in Portland and I am sure you will sort to the top of that bunch as well.

    If he's 6'0 180, I'm 6'3 220 but good luck in Portland anyway.

Derek has had excellent coaches at all levels. He has played on some excellent teams with excellent players. This too has helped his development.

I'm not saying sparta had anything to do with it. i'm giving mitchell credit for the championship. Think he's a brilliant coach. I don't want to start anything. boggs is great.

Spartaman I guess we gotta give The Sparta Club some love too huh. There are great club players all over the state playing on high school teams, Alta, Mitchel and Boggs still had to compete against some very good players and coaches. Under Mitchells helm they won, it is what it is, you have to give a coach his dues regarless of what ODP, RSL or Sparta coaches did along the way. I would think after 12 state titles Mitchell would get some respect instead of every year some club person getting on here proclaiming their club or their coach the reason why they won. Oh and by the way there are club coaches both boys and girls coaching high school teams. When Boggs wins an MVP club award I'm sure all those coaches you mentioned will be recognized.
If he wins a championship for Portland are you gonna say it wasn't the Portland coaches it was his Sparta coaches etc?.

nomo, boggs will be good at the next level because of his odp, rsl, and club coaches. i love coach mitchell, but he's not as good as these national coaches.

123 don't hate on the coach, that's just his style, that is why Alta teams are so mentally tough, they don't need the coach to blow smoke, they know how good they are. Boggs will be ready for the next level because of a guy like coach Mithcell, he's tough and that's why they win and that's why Alta produces the players they do. I knew a guy named LaVell Edwards that was much the same way..

Boggs is so good. everyone knows about him. He does more than score goals and give assists, he controls the pace. that's something stats can't track and it can only be witnessed. Very good choice deseret news....despite some others.....and i'm with screenname123

And we wonder why parents hate on coaches. C'mon coach, couldn't have you just said, "he's great. We will miss him." Instead you tell everyone what he needs to work on publicly? Even when asked a direct question like that, you can dance around it. And no, I am not the kid's parent and I've never even watched a high school soccer game.
Good luck in Portland. The school (and the coach) will miss you.

Good luck to him, maybe some day we will be able to yell at ya on an opposing team in MLS, or maybe you will be here on RSL's team, whatever you do I hope you have a great career.

Smart player. Finds a way to thread the needle in the midfield. Also a pretty solid defensive player.
