    BYU vs California

    Paid attendance 10,139 + 2,000 comp tickets = 12,139

THE LARGEST crowd EVER to see a non-international Rugby match in US History!

Congrats BYU fans on a great turnout to support your Cougars!

    @fox kids

If the clubs/sponsors want money and viewership, they'd be smart to keep it in Sandy.

BYU fans national fanbase will watch, and a local stake center will send 11K to physically attend.

Great match on Saturday. Cal and BYU are really head and shoulders above any other college rugby teams, thus they meet in the finals every year and I don't see any change in this moving forward.

The crowd was tremendous - I believe a record for any college rugby match. Historically it is hosted at Stanford at their Steuber Rugby Stadium, which has holds about 660 permanent seats and then they add additional bleachers. The most I have seen attend is around 1500 or so the past several years.

Hopefully Rio Tinto will be the site moving forward and I think we will see the crowds continue to grow especially as Cal and BYU continue to play in the finals given their elite status versus the competition. With the exception of some NorCal rugby teams which feed the Cal pipeline some, Utah is the hotbed for US youth rugby.

Cal is making rugby a club sport starting next year. No more scholarships should hurt their team. The Lacross National title is not the official NCAA title, it is more like the equivilent to the division II National Title.

I was in the crowd and we fought valiantly. I thought we had a chance before the game, but in the end they were too much. No shame in losing to such a storied program, though. Maybe we can get them next year (if its still a scholarship sport for Cal).

How about Highland? They did it again! Twenty titles. All those young missionaries under "coach" in the mission field (Larry Gelwix) will learn and be inspired for the next five years. He has a knack, a gift, for getting the most out of young people using the spirit. Way to go Larry G., blessing to your and yours in the interesting times ahead.

Gotta love the "logic" on the hill: "MY team can't beat you, but we are loosely associated with a good team that can. LOL"

Study practical significance and statistical significance...both will serve you in a negative way.

Utah got served by Cal and gave up 64 points.

Utah got served by BYU and gave up about 20 points.

BYU lost to Cal by 7 points, and had 2 knock-ons that were feet away from beating Cal.

So, now that utah is joinging the Pac, could you please also step up your "fan" intelligence?

I am often disappointed with the match-up in a championship game because the team's right to be there is questionable.

This, on the other hand, was highly satisfying. These were clearly the best two teams in the nation. None of their other opponents even made the games look close.

I wish the cougars had won, but I'm happy that the best teams played a close game and hope Rugby gains more US fans.

Not sure if you're a BYU friend or foe, but it was reported Friday on 104.7 the Zone, that Cal will drop Rugby as a scholarship sport in 2012 and they will be a club sport then too...LOL

"Great effort team! Congrats to the Bears. They are a great team. Overall not a bad day for Cougars sports. Played for two national championships going 1 for 2. Lacrosse team national champs again!"

Laser, I didn't realize BYU was such a lacrosse power. But I'm also having difficulty substantiating your claim that they are in fact the lacrosse nation champion. Typically schools like Duke, Syracuse, Johns Hopkins, Delaware, etc dominate the lacrosse championships. Further, the NCAA website doesn't have BYU in neither the men's nor women's lacrosse brackets (for which the tourneys are in semi-finals right now).

Perhaps there is another source besides the one that actually counts (NCAA) that would have rewarded BYU the "Lacrosse national championship?" Perhaps BYU's team is a club team? Just wondering where you got this info....

Utah is the hotbed of rugby in America. Fantastic crowd last night. If U.S.A.Rugby is smart they will hold it there again next year.

BYU TV needs to try and get this match shown live.

Happy for BYU. The U.S. does not play it enough, Fewer injuries than football. These kids do not don a uniform with which to punish their opponents.

Disappointing turnout? That was the most that have been at the championship game in awhile. When it's in California there is only a few thousand people, and it's played in a high school stadium. In Utah it was played in a pro-sized stadium, and the turnout on Saturday was about 12,000. I'd say that's pretty good.

It's amazing how, in any sport, teams that annihilate most of their opponents have low scoring affairs when they meet each other.

Tough loss. At least BYU gets to that title game consistently, and did win one of them recently.

Just need to get over the hump. But no embarrassment in a close loss to another great team.

Keep it up, Cougars! Thanks for the memories.

Actually I thought BYU made poor decisions throughout the contest. BYU kept chip kicking and it burnt them every time.
BYU needs to play better clubs during the season to make them a stronger club at the end of the year. No shame in losing to Cal. BYU needed to play smarter but they will learn. Congrats on a fine season.

Sounded like it was a very hard fought game and Cal proved a bit too much for the Cougs once again. Good luck next year boys! You played your hearts out but made too many errors too it sounds like. We're still proud of you though. Go Cougs. Let's try to get over that hump next year.
