With a budget deal in hand, lawmakers turn to the details

    There has not been a better time where democracy can work as it does now in our information age. The voice of the people can so readily be heard on issues. And that is what I hope to see brought out in the open. Now we have the opportunity for the American people to weigh in on issues like public funding for Planned Parenthood. Instead of giving the President or Congress a line item veto on our national budget, we could give it to the American people. Of course that has its caveats because a needed highway or bridge may never be built, for example, but I still trust the voice of the people will be fairer than secret deals. We can impose our will if we want to.
