So how is it that a game of this magnitude does not get broadcast nationally? I think every time 2 top-10 teams in a major sport play, someone should pick it up with a national feed. Guaranteed revenue...

Won't be a problem next year as BYU steps into what Ute fans call independent obscurity w/ the ESPN contract. But I may just be reading there comments wrong.

Love the Cougs, but still lots of basketball left to play. One game at a time boys.

p.s. Jimmer is unreal, kind of reminds me of a faster (although shorter) Larry Bird, both can shoot from anywhere on the floor.

Get in line behind all of the other jealous Utah trolls.

Jimmy is the best thing in the world! No one can stop him and his scoring, well except for:

66-61 2008 signed Texas a&m. One and done!

79-61 2009 signed Texas a&m. One and done!

84-72 2010 signed Kansas State. Round of 32.

Heck it had been 20 years before byU got out of the first round and your beloved Jimmy could only take them to the second round.

We will see how great he is when he does something in The Dance.

It was just a few years ago that Utah was in the Sweet 16 with Bogut. Has byU every been that far in the Dance?

ute trolls, we all have sympathy for your embarrassment and envy of BYU. The Cougars are great young men who are skillfully and gracefully winning ball games, things that the utes are not. With all of the L's the utes have, their fans should have better skills at being graceful losers.

It's largely outside BYU's hands, but if the wins keep coming, it would be great for BYU to land the #2 seed in the West, opening up at the Tucson subregional and, if the Y can wins its first 2 games, moving on to Anaheim for the West regional with a potential regional final with Kansas. Before last night's victory over the Aztecs, Joe Lunardi of ESPN had SDSU as the #2 seed in the West, Tucson subregional. Can you imagine the crowds that would show up to watch the Jimmer try to replicate his 49-point outing the last time he was at McHale Arena?

Who cares if Jimmer ever scores 47 in the NBA. This kid is amazing to watch and I wouldn't doubt his ability after yesterday. I do know that in college he was able to score 47 points on your utes. Trying to down play Jimmers ability by making a childs argument wont take away the Beat down he gave your team at home! He leads the Nation in Scoring at 27.4 points a game. As good as the Utes have been in the past has any Utah player ever won the NCAA scoring title??? Player of the Year?

  • Y Ask Y Provo, UT
    Jan. 27, 2011 1:03 p.m.

I think Jimmer would be the first to tell you this: his incredible performance was made possible by his teammates and, especially, his coach.

Rose planned for his team to come out running as fast and as furious as they could. SDSU is a plodding team. They do not score big numbers, and their defense keeps opponents from scoring big numbers.

Rose knows the best way to play such a team is to force them out of their plodding rythm - run them into the ground the first half. By the second half, SDSU was not able to sustain their style and rythm, and began to fall apart.

Just a crack here and there, so Jimmer could open up the game in the second half.

Jimmer is impressive as a player. Rose is impressive as a coach.

I bet winning a BCS game or 2 is pretty fun. You know what's really fun, winning a National Championship. You should try that some time!

Nah, let's give Chris B the bennifit of the doubt.

Chris, tell us more about the BCS game that "you" won. What was it like on the field? How many yards did "you" pick up? How many tackles.

I have no illusion that "I" was on the court last night. I enjoyed watching others play, but I am at work today, living "my" life, going home to "my" home, with "my" wife and daughters.

    I have a life...

    Re: Chris B.

Thanks for the thought, I think the football team plans to take you up on that in the next few seasons.

Jimmer was absolutely amazing last night, and he's the unquestionable reason BYU is a top 10 team.

Let's not forget though, that BYU has more than just a good Jimmer, BYU has a good team. Jimmer was shut down for the first 5 minutes because the Aztecs defensive game plan was completely against him. Then, because of the good play of the guys around him, the Aztecs finally needed to respect Jimmer's teammates also. That is when Jimmer caught fire. Jimmer and the rest of BYU's squad complement each other. BYU wouldn't be the crazy explosive offense they are without Jimmer, and Jimmer wouldn't explode without the good play of guys like Emery, Davies, Hartsock, Abuou, Collinsworth, etc.

Great job Cougs! Good luck at the pit this Saturday.

Best Team in the Country as of now!! And if it weren't for the Biased press BYU would have been #6 or #7 when they played #4 SDSU. Now they should be #3 or #4 althought in reality #1 as they are the best and there RPI proves it! Keep winning Cougs, get a #1 seed for the tourney and the Elite Eight and Final Four should be yours. In the end I hope BYU wins a National Championship.

What will be an interesting storyline for the rest of the year, is what type of defensive plan will coaches come up with to stop Jimmer?

Steve Fisher had as good of gameplan as any team I have seen this year, and got torched for 43.

They pressed him full court to wear him down, Gay worked hard to shut him down, but picked up his third foul. They double and even triple teamed him, and he split the defenders.

It will be interesting to watch what Alford does Saturday.

Utahcountyute, nice jabs, but let's remind you of the real knock-out punch...

When a top 5 team came to Utah County to play the top 10 Cougars, the Mighty Cougars won and won big.

When a top 5 Football team came to Salt Lake County to play a top 10 Ute team, the stinkin utes made SLC and Utah the laughing stock of the Nation.

At least you should give credit to the Cougars for restoring credibility to the State.

That may have been the best article I have ever read by Dick Harmon. Great job! Made me laugh.

As far as Jimmer scoring 47 points in the NBA, would he really need to? I would see him averaging more in the 15-20 pt/game range and getting 7-10 assists per game. Pro teams aren't going to utilize him the same way that BYU does, but they have better finishers at the bucket so he'll get a lot more assists. Whatever needs to happen, I'm sure he'll adjust his game to meet the needs of the team.

Yes, this was a great game. I could watch it over and over again. Loved every second of it.

The Utes comments here sound to me like little children crying.

SDSU has a great team. They stuck with BYU for the first half. I think the altitude got to them (not to mention Jimmer). If SDSU had spent a week training at altitude (say at Idyllwild, CA not far from San Diego) They would have been much better prepared to play in Provo. (Don't tell coach Fisher)

They will not have that problem at home. SDSU will be much tougher at home. BYU can still Jimmer them especially if the rest of the team has an average scoring night.

TCU held Jimmer to 21 points by double and triple teaming him. BYU had 5 players in double figures. Jimmer creates openings just by stepping onto the court.

The only people that are not enjoying the "Jimmer Show" are bitter Utah fans. Not all are bitter, but the ones that are bitter are in a lonely and dark place right now.

Like comments before me, the place was rockin. 62 min before the game started Jimmer walks onto the floor and the place goes nuts. (mostly students at that time) It was incredible! Had a couple Aztec fans sitting near us that were class acts. They knew it was going to be hard to get a win in Provo and were both very surprised at how quickly Jimmer was sitting on 30 and then 40 points for the game.

    One I will never forget.

Just need to take care of business at UNM on sat and then it will be the boys in blue in the top 5. Can you even imagine? Ranked in the top 5? Unbelievable.

What a great game. I don't like what the NBA has become. All the 1 on 1 and clear outs for the Stars. Jimmer is a Star. I love the UTES but basketball is my passion. Even if you are a Huge Utah fan you have to admit that Jimmer is a special talent. Kids like him don't come around to often. One of the neat things about Jimmer is all the interaction he has with Young Men and making them feel special and important. He makes others around him better and lifts them up. That is the sign of a true leader and great man. Don't be haters and call Jimmer a ball hog. Try to stop him first and then see what he does in the passing game.... Come in Dick. I thought atleast you could read between the lines on Durant's tweet!

He had just put up 47 in an NBA game! It was a total smack in the face! LOL

The guys played together this summer and became great friends.

Jimmer gave the respect right back, and laughed and said that Durrant was. Not a smack in Durrant's face. Their friends. Maybe someday you'll understand what mutual respect is.

Dude, it's OK to lose the hate.

    Agree with Spiker:

It had the electricity of a Springsteen concert. No one wanted to leave the building. We just stood and watched the kids rush the floor. Jimmer was escorted from the floor with a grin that lit the place up. The kid loves to play.

No one wanted to leave. People were hanging around the concourse, hanging around in the parking lot talking.

At the game last night, it was incredible. What I noticed was this. Dave Rose made great adjustments half way through the first half. He realized that nerves were affecting everyone but Jimmer and Davies. The second started and it was all about getting the ball to those two. I credit Dave Rose for his stifling defense, as well as coaching his guys to not be selfish and let the hot shooters shoot. I don't know if BYU will make it past the 16, but I'm starting to believe. Comment above about the rest of the team's offense -- excluding Davies, I think, who certainly did his part -- is true. But their team defense was phenomenal. They completely stifled SDSU: below season average in rebounds and 15 points below their average points per game! Ouch! Agreed, others beside Jimmer need to score, but you can't fault the cougs defense.

CTguy, UCLA didn't frsutrate Jimmer, Creighton did that (held him to 15 points). Regardless, I agree that the rest of the team needs to improve to a point. Davies and Anderson were fantastic down low. Emery could not make a shot...but his defense of Gay made up for that. I think this group definitely rivals the glory years of the 80's or the U's glory years of the 90's.

  • yarrlydarb Ogden, UT

Harmon says, "In the past three Aztec games, Fredette has scored 33, 26 and 43. That's an average of 34 points per game. And BYU won. That is simply insane. SDSU plays defense, manly defense."

My father (a professional baseball manager) used to say, "The best defense is a great offense" (not original with him, I'm sure).

    Jimmer proves the point.

And it stands to reason: Offense is proactive and defense by definition is reactive.

Defense waits till the game comes to it; offense takes what it wants.

Way to go Jimmer and the Cougars!

P.S. Jerry Sloan will NEVER win an NBA championship.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, there is a lot of season left. Regardless of the end however this season has been an excellent one.

We were so happy to have been there. The atmosphere at this game was electric! I loved the chant, "You got Jimmered!" at the end. All 22,700 in attendance joined to add to the sweetness of this win. Stunning, to say the least! Thanks to Dave Rose and BYU's great coaches and players for this outstanding event and win.

Thanks, Dick Harmon, for another colorful, masterful article on BYU basketball and Jimmermania.

Jimmer is phenomenal, but the rest of the team was terrible when it came to offense. It seemed like no one could shoot the ball besides Jimmer. That won't win tournaments. It's always nice to have someone who can drop 40+ points on the #4 team in the nation, but if the cougs expect to do anything after the regular season, the rest of the team better get on board, and start lighting it up. Teams are going to figure how to frustrate Jimmer (UCLA already did). Great defense Cougs!

I have been reading all the comments from this posting and the prior articles written and I like a good spirited debtate between Utah fans and BYU fans...What I don't get is this...BYU is a legitimate top 10 team, Jimmer Fredette is probably a lottery pick at this point and Utah fans still act like BYU is overhyped..First, Leonard for SDSU played incredible..He may have been sick before, but he didn't play like it..Second, go read the "Tweets" from players like Kevin Durant, John Wall, and prior players Fredette has played against and see they hype they are giving him...
While I love to read comments from people like Chris B and other Utah fans who hate BYU, pick a year to do this where they are actually overrated like Utah football was this year! Utah fans are still feeling the 47 points Jimmer dropped on you at home..
    Over and out!

Wow amazing game!!! I may be overly optimistic but I am very excited about this team for various reasons.

    1. Jimer out did himself again. This boy is amazing.
He may well be one of the best scorers of all time. He will probably be picked in the top five of the NBA draft and if he is not picked first it will be due to the bias most of the nation has against my Cougs.

Considering the NBA games last much longer than a College game, I can see him scoring in the 30's each game as a Pro. It was just classic at the end of the game when everyone chanted "you got Jimered!!!" (I think pretty creative and intelligent fans!!!)

    2. All of the other players on the Cougs would be super stars on any other major college team. We are very lucky to have a great group.

    3. Looks like we will be getting a number one seat. If we play our cards right we may not only have a College Football Championship.

    Thanks for the memories.

    Go Cougs!!!

One of the greatest games I have ever been to.

The crowd, the teams, the win, the national attention, the Jimmer show.

    More to come ...

From NBC Sports "Beyond the Arc" by Mike Miller

Jimmer shoots his way into legendary status.

Much like LeBron during his Decision, Twitter timelines slowed to a crawl as users tossed out 140 characters of love, disbelief and sheer delight. He turned everyone into Fredette fans:

Arizonas Derrick Williams: "The only way your stopping Jimmer is when the game ends."

Ohio States Jared Sullinger: "Yooo Jimmer is going off right now. Pure scorer."

Washingtons John Wall: "Jimmer Fredette is cold!

Kevin Durant (who had 47 himself on Wednesday) gushed about Fredette: "Jimmer is the best scorer in the world!!"

What a game! I loved watching it. Some of the other players looked a little nervous but Jimmer was ready. Jimmer is always ready! Go Cougars!

Chuck Norris couldn't stop Jimmer Fredette!
