    @Muss and Solomon

Yes, it is true BYU played tougher teams in 80s when dominating the WAC only to lose in the bowl game.

BYU in FIFTEEN games vs ranked teams has won TWO.
Utah in FOUR games vs ranked teams has won THREE.

However, to say Utah hasn't played anyone is not true. When you compare both teams bowls in the MWC you see a clear trend, Utah is playing better teams (4 ranked teams) and winning. So if you're going to say Utah has played anyone then you have to say nor has BYU in the MWC.

  • Solomon the Wise Alpine, UT

As was stated previously, BYU has played more ranked opponents in bowls, than Utah has played bowls, yet Uteology cluelessly argues that Utah has played a "tougher" bowl than BYU.

    It's not even close!

BYU has played TEN bowl opponents ranked in the Top 15.

Utah has only played THREE bowl opponents ranked in the Top 15 (Washington State just barely).

Sorry not true. Here again is the proof Utah has played better bowl games...

In bowl games played in the MWC (8 overall for both teams):

    1. Utah has played two top 10 teams, four top 25 overall. Record 3-0 (Boise TBD)

    2. BYU has played no top 10 teams but three top 25. Record 1-2

    3. Utah 8-0 vs BYU 4-4

    4. #16 BYU lost to a #50 team and in 2 of its 4 wins barley beat a #41 team and demolished a #89 team.

    2010.#10 (11-1) Boise 24 Utah 38 (10-2)

    2009.#35 (8-4) California 27 Utah 37 (9-3)opponent dropped to #46

Before you annoint Heaps with the 2011 Heisman, take a look at another true freshman performance in a bowl game against a better team than UTEP. 26-36 338 3-1.

Wynn put this up against Cal last year. If Heaps can do this against good teams, he might just well be as advertised. But UAB QB threw for 20-28 272 3-0 against this UTEP team. Do get too excited yet.

Losing by 7 at what was essentially a home game for UCLA is hardly "getting wasted"

Bottom line: BYU is still 10-1, #23 in both polls, with a #9 RPI.

What have U got with your 7-3 record an a home loss to Oral Roberts(4-6)?

    back to football

Why are you whining about BYU beating a mediocre team in a bowl?

Utah fans have been beating their chests for years about their bowl record, even though

the vast majority of Utah's bowl wins have come against unranked, mediocre, bowl opponents.

I really like Kyle, I think he is a great coach. The sad fact is, you don't have the skill players like you did a couple of years ago. You can beat your chests and hire strippers all you want but that is the fact. Boise St should be in a BCS Game and everyone knows it. They have many great skill players and you are going to get it handed to you. As for the future, only time will tell. I a very small way I would like you to win but if you are going to loose, the score can't be high enough. LOL. You are cannon fodder.

One or two or maybe even three years could be considered a peak or, in Utah's case, a valley. But 5 or 6 years is definitely more like a trend. Becoming a regular bottom half of the conference finisher, and then bringing in a bunch of JC transfers to try to provide a one-year spike in performance is no way to rebuild a program.

Even with the new talent, Utah isn't close to the level of SDSU, BYU, UNLV or New Mexico, which means, even with the brief improvement, the Utes will still be fighting AFA and CSU for 5th/6th/7th in the MWC.

And this is supposed to give Utah fans hope for Utah's move to the PAC 12 next season?

Sorry, I don't see it. Utah should have fired Boylen, and made a clean start to rebuilding the program. Bandaiding a sinking program is just delaying the inevitable.

Maybe Utah will have to go through a 1-25 "valley" before Hill gets the message that Utah basketball is no longer competitive.

  • Rockwell Baltimore, MD
    Dec. 20, 2010 10:22 a.m.

I think it's funny that Utah fans do the exact same thing in basketball that they complain about BYU fans doing in football, living in the past.

For Utah basketball, nothing since 2004 is relevant, but 1998 is like yesterday, and even 1944 is relevant.

For Utah football, nothing before 2004 is relevant. 1996 is like so last century, and 1984 is ancient history. Leather helmet era wins over BYU are okay, but thats it. Don't bother even trying to talk about anything else prior to 2004.

  • utahcountyute Cedar Hills, UT
    Dec. 20, 2010 10:04 a.m.

Your sample size is always a bit suspect. I wonder why? Oh yeah, because you only include the years that better serve your argument. If you are going to show a trend though, your sample size has to allow that. Understandable though considering the years you would have to include for byu.

If you went back 20 years, you would see mts (like 1998) and valleys in every elite program. Thankfully we have never hit a 1-25 "valley" like the cougs.

Clearly, byu has had some HUGE years recently. Will be interesting to see how they do this year. Will they blame the 1st round exit on seeding, lack of depth, or lack of size and skill in the interior? Hmmmmm

I wouldn't count the Utes out just yet either.

  • pocyUte Pocatello, ID
    Dec. 20, 2010 7:32 a.m.

I find it funny when a BYU fan accuses Utah fans of living in the past. How many references to 1984 do we read each day.

Utah certainly has had a rough stretch. BYU is a very good team this year, lead by a great player. Utah is a team with better talent and chemistry than last year, but needing to gel. I think that process is well under way considering they are already sitting at 8 wins, more than half of last year's total. I submit that Utah has reached it's nadir and both teams are in the same direction, BYU is just much further ahead at this point.

As an aside I think Clyburn is making a great case for newcomer of the year in MWC.

  • SportsFan Orem, UT

    Living in the past.

Since 2006, when Dave Rose became BYU's head coach, BYU is 137-39, Utah is 89-79.

    Digging deeper

    2010-11 10-1, 0-0
    2009-10 30-5, 13-3 NCAA 2nd, MWC 2nd
    2008-09 25-8, 12-4 NCAA 1st, MWC 1st
    2007-08 27-7, 14-2 NCAA 1st, MWC 1st
    2006-07 25-9, 13-3 NCAA 1st, MWC 1st
    2005-06 20-9, 12-4 NIT, MWC 2nd
    Overall 137-39, 64-16

    2010-11 10-1, 0-0
    2009-10 14-17, 7-9 MWC 5th
    2008-09 25-8, 12-4 NCAA 1st, MWC 1st
    2007-08 18-15, 7-9 CBI, MWC 6th
    2006-07 11-19, 6-10 MWC 6th
    2005-06 14-15, 6-10 MWC 6th
    Overall 89-79, 38-42

Utah has only played in one NCAA tournament in the last 5 years and Utah's chances of making the big dance this year are practically nil.

BYU has played in four straight NCAA tournaments and already a near lock to be playing in the Big Dance this year.

Two programs obviously headed in opposite directions.

"You won't beat any of the decent PAC teams and will not beat them, or BYU for a recruit." (huh?)

This is akin to saying "my dad can beat up your dad!" as you are running home. Keep on running, cause what you said will never happen either.

The Utes take recruits from PAC teams all the time as does byu on occasion. Not worried about recruiting.

Mark this down, the Utes will win their division in the PAC next year and play in the PAC 12 champ game.

BYU will finish 7-4 and play in the "whatever's left" bowl.

It won't make a bit of difference how many pratices they got and Boise didn't. Boise is going to kill them. Just prepare yourselves for the humiliation ute "fans". Also prepare yourselves for years and years of it to come. You might beat Washington State occasionally and just might steal a recruit or two from Washington State. You won't beat any of the decent pac10 teams and will not beat them, or BYU for a recruit.

    Blind Homer? WOW!

Let me just clarify some things for you.

Since 2000... the Utes have been to the NCAA tournament 6 times. They made it to the 2nd round 3 times including to the sweet 16 in 05. I'm pretty sure, looking at our storied history, the Utes will be just fine.

Since 2000... BYU has been to the big dance 7 times, all 1st round exits until last year when they beat a Florida team that should not have been there in the first place. I just hope something gets done this year because things don't look very bright with Jimmer and Emery gone next year.

In regards to football. 7-6 (the sixth time in the last 10 years they have had a six or more loss season)OUCH!, no top 25 finish, 2 - 3 and SCOREBOARD!

    Go Utes, beat the smurfs!

These are great times for being a Utah fan. We are the envy of both BYU and BSU. The Pac-12 will be awesome and a great new challenge.

    @Sports Fan.
If the Utes have been in steady decline since 1998 what does that make BYU? One win in the Big Dance since who knows when?? A 7-6 football record. Who is this guy? Before you comment on the Utes look in the mirror and realize your Cougars are terrible.

  • SportsFan Orem, UT
    Dec. 19, 2010 4:35 p.m.

Nice spin, but only a blind Utah homer would try to argue that Utah basketball hasn't been in steady decline since 1998.

Bogut and Neville gave Utah a couple of brief glimpses of hope, but that last glimmer of home was extinguished in an embarrassing first-round blowout in Utah's only NCAA appearance since 2004.

The Utah big game mystique in football was destroyed by TCU in 2009 and 2010, and Boise State will shatter the last vestige of Utah chest beating when the Broncos end Utah's bowl winning streak with an embarrassing beatdown on Wednesday night.

Heaps and company are just getting started.

What have U got for next year?

  • pocyUte Pocatello, ID

Certainly BSU is a great team. I look for Kyle and Co. to have a great gameplan in place and the team to execute it well. I truly do think this will be Utah's best game of the year, and the game to be a very good one.

Interesting since the Utes have been to the sweet 16 in just the last 6 years. When was the last time byu was there. Oh yeah, like 1981. LOL. Nice try.

After next year when Jimmer goes to Europe, byu basketball will be back to normal too. Just wait.

Do you really want to discuss where byu is trending in football? byu vs Utep, that's all I have to say.
