It was definitely disappointing not to see Davies, I think he definitely has the best offensive game of all the BYU post players.
I love all the occasional "but we didn't have Bendall" comments. The kid was injured; it's part of sports. Imagine if the Trail Blazers or Rockets always pulled the "but if Greg Oden/Yao Ming were healthy.." card.
It will be exciting to watch both teams develop. Brockeith Pane has some amazing speed and will be fun to watch in the open court.

The real question about this game is where the heck was Davies? Playing him for 1 minute during the game when Anderson played 15 minutes and got completely worked by Wesley makes absolutely no sense. A game plan decision?? Come on Dave, you're a great coach but seriously??? I assumed that he must have been hurt and unable to go but apparently that wasn't the case. The only other thing that makes any sense is that he's in the doghouse and was kept out to make a point or teach a lesson. How else could Rose justify keeping out the biggest, strongest player on the team when we desperately needed a big body to bang with Wesley? This is a guy who started most of the year as a true freshman and now all of a sudden he's only worth 1 minute of playing time? We need some investigative reporting Dick.

Live Hard. Do we have to listen to your obsessed hate of everything BYU and LSD even when the Utes are not involved. That was one of the better Bball games that any of us will see this season. Stu Morrill is one of the best coaches in the country and his players would do anything for him. Great team, fun to watch and 99% of the fans are very classy. Only a few with no class like LiveHard and utahcountyute. BYU is a class program that has a really good team this year. They are more a top 20 Bball team this year than Utah is a top 20 Football team. BYU is a little weak in the middle but hopefully Davies or one of the others will step up. BYU has a LITTLE better talent but USU is the better at team play. USU, in my opinion is more fun to watch. I wish them both well and hope each has 30 wins this year.

I hated the call too. But Mr. Harmon hit the nail on the head pointing out what really sealed the deal for BYU was free throws made. Had USU sunk some more of those than it would have been a different game.

It's so easy to blame the officating in these close games. Those last minute whistles always leave you wondering "what if". Could the game have ended differently without the call? Possibly. But when I'm being honest with myself the game went to BYU because of some great execution down the stretch including being perfect from the free throw line that put them over the top.

It was a good game. I've got nothing to whine about as I was entertained and I think USU will be really good this year and BYU has potential to really make a statement this year.

    Go Aggies!

Oh come on Aggies, Wesley never committed any fouls did he? The other four were "homers" too, right? Even the announcers on the Mountain TV (Cravens) said Jimmer was mugged without any fouls being called. Bottom line; it goes both ways.

Shooting was a huge factor. USU missed several front end of 1 and 1 free throws, BYU missed several uncontested 3's, and the game's best player, Green nailed his. All of this had a huge impact on the game.

The Wesley play was handled well. He got a little hot headed, as did BYU's Emery because of a couple ticky fouls each. But the key to the Wesley play was that the officials took the time to check the replays before they made their final rulings. Not to mention that the that specific emphasis to those types of situations had been discussed with both teams.

Final comment. So what happens if everybody does what they are suppose to do, make free throws, 3 points shots, no ticky fouls, etc. Easy answer, Utah State wins in Logan and BYU wins in Provo. What you would expect from two very good teams playing each other in the 2nd game of the season.

No need for sour grapes or whining, watch the reply and see two, 20 plus win, NCAA bound teams, go against each other.

BTW, loved the cheese and fine whine comment. That says it all.

I was there. Wesley and Green were nails for the Aggies.

Chris Collingsworth and Abou were nails for BYU.

The better team won mostly because they have overall better players. That is not to diminish from Utah State. I like the Aggies and Stew Morrill teams are always good.

The refs were bad, but they were bad on both sides. The 3rd and 4th fouls Emery got were not fouls. The last call on Wesley was stupid and I am guessing that his first swing and/or twist was the reason for the call.

I am glad the Aggies almost won. Teams like BYU, where the offensive talent is there, need to know that there are more ways to win than just outscore a team.

I hated the call against Tai at the end, but the stupid thing was the two quick ones he committed in the first half. (the over-the-back on the rebound was the worst decision Tai made all night) The outcome may not have changed with Tai in the game so its basically a non-issue.

Both teams are very good, but I would really have liked to see them play around Christmas when both teams have found their rhythm.

Stew seems to be giving Pane a little more freedom with the ball, which is good and bad. Pane needs to run the offensive sets first, then, if plays break down, use his talent for getting to the rim.

Brady needs to calm down. I swear somebody gives him straight caffeine before games or something. His energy is awesome, but he needs to slow down a little; when he gets the ball he tends to rush too much. He's one person doing really well at rebounding for the Aggies though.

    Nate, how's that foot feelin'?

    Live Hard...

What's your take on Wesley throwing Fredette to the ground?

I love how people get upset about the controversial "5th" foul, when in reality, without the other 4, it's a non issue.

Wesley even explained how the refs warned him.

    Play clean, play hard.

He did his team a disservice picking up the two fould in the first half. If the guy plays clean, stays on the floor, USU has a good shot at having a great season.

Definately two of the best coaches in the state on the floor last night.

    To Live Hard:
Dude, really, get a life. That was a good game, bottom line. For the record, BYU was up even before Wesley threw his elbows around, and the refs took 10 MINUTES to make a ruling, it wasn't a quick decision by any means (also, that was not even close to the only mistake made by USU, Wesley). The only thing worse than a sore winner is a sore loser. But, the rest of Aggie nation seems to be different than you. Anyway, good game Aggies, you played tough, but even better game Cougs! Keep it rolling!

Vince, you need to take a step into reality.

Both teams played a very good game. USU has lots of deep talent as does BYU. Had the game been played in the Spectrum, we would likely have seen a different outcome. But is wasn't. Home court adavantage is truly an advantage and does not include refs. It has more to do with familiarity, the fans, and getting a good nights sleep in your own bed.

USU will win lots of games and BYU will also.

Go Aggies now that the BYU game is over.
    Go Cougars always.

As someone who attended both of these schools and was just looking for a good game, I got it. I think the call on Wesley was iffy and I wish it wouldn't have happened. That said, BYU is the better team. They didn't play well and still beat a top-25 caliber USU team with Wesley going 9-11 from the floor and Green shooting out of his mind. USU shot 10 percentage points better from the field and 36 percentage points better from three. Even with those stats and BYU playing poorly, the Cougars still won. That's what good teams do: win against good competition even when they played a bad game. They still have a long way to go to be great though.

As for Utah State, that is a good basketball team. Their defense is very impressive and Wesley is an absolute BEAST in the post. Goodness he's fundamentally sound. I expect USU to roll through the WAC and end up with only 4-5 losses on the year. Good ball club. It was nice to see such a great game.

Nice write up. Before the game it seemed that every radio sports talk show stated that the Y would win because they are a better team. It is nice to see someone acknowledge both schools have great teams.

Play the game again next week and it would most likely go down to the wire again. Play it in the Spectrum and you have to give the edge to USU.

Aggies and Cougs will roll through their conferences.

Give the sports world a break "Y ner's", anyone who has played this game, watched games for years, or is just plain interested knows that the calls made last night by supposed quality referee's was bogus at best. The call on Wesley was "totally" wrong as well as several calls before that. This was nothing more than another complete "HOMER" job! You better get these same men to give you help this year "wonderful ones" if your going to reach your fans lofty fantasy predictions, thats my take.

"USU fans still have a long way to go before they are equal to their team. "

Just add this to the list of holier, better, and classier than though quotes by byu fans.

btw...Jimmer IS a ball hog and the one dimensional byu squad will be exposed soon.

As an Unbiased Viewpoint the following facts must be looked at. Keep in mind I have no leaning either way just looking at it from a 200 foot perspective.

Score when the Wesley foul was called. BYU 72 USU 69. Final USU score total 72 (note USU got a gimmie two free throws on Collinsworth fould out next trip down).

Foul or no foul likely would not have changed the outcome.

USU has classy fans in my opinion. Sure there are a few annoying ones but that's about the same as every other team in the state.

Dick could you please do some digging and find out why coach Rose didn't want to play Davies against Utah State?

Did he not want Davies to see how much better he would be if he had gone to USU where they actually develop there big men and use them in the game?

BYU really needs to develop some kind of an inside game to beat teams like SDSU and advance in the NCAA tournament. It frustrates me as a fan when our inside talent is consistently under developed. Hartsock has played well so far but no one has done much in the post. They would not have beaten USU if this game was played on the road.

Don't get me wrong I love watching Jimmer Fredette and he is an amazing player, but the best teams have good players who can do some damage at every position.

@ IFjazzfan. Your comments about Jimmer being a "ball hog' are incorrect. Last year Jimmer lead the team in assists and he probably will again this year. How can you lead in assists and be a ball hog?

USU has a classy team. USU fans still have a long way to go before they are equal to their team.

I expect a lot of classless trash talking from both sets of fans during the next few months. There are classy and classless fans from both schools, so taking shots at the Aggie fans is a bit disingenuous.

    Re AggieNation,

By the same token, USU was lucky that BYU didn't beat them by 15 or 20 due to poor shooting by Jimmer and a couple of others. It is what it is! BYU was not lucky. They scored when they needed to and hit their FT's. At least you admitted that Tai's foul at the end was a blunder, as it was.

Keep your head up, USU has a good team and will go far.

From a BYU fan: We were outplayed on the inside big time. We are in trouble. We have small forwards playing center and power forward. Also, I'm ticked they whistled Wesley out of the game. Too many people will now say thats the only reason we won. Even though we were up by 3 at the the time. Lastly, Jimmer dribbling the ball for almost the full shot clock is looking ridiculous. The development of the rest of the team is being hurt by his ball hogging. Yeah he is good. But from a team standpoint we need the team to learn how to pass it around and get it to the open guy.

    Good write up.

"USU doubled up on Fredette constantly and BYU struggled to make the Aggies pay"

Looks like it wasn't good enough. 26 points for Fredette, leading all scorers by far. If Fredette had more patience and passed the ball, BYU could have begun to creep away. 26 points is still amazing.

    The WIN is what counts!

I made the trip and was impressed with the Aggies. I figured we would go down as the home team has won in this series for a long time. I still believe if we have Nate Bendall, starting center, we win the game. Foul calls were horrible and really that is both ways. I thought one of the many bad calls hurt us worse with Tai getting tossed but he does need to learn to keep his freaking elbows down as he's been whistled before for that. BYU's pressure hurt us as they are pretty quick and we turned the ball over a lot. All in all a good game, I look for Y and Ags to blow through their regular season schedules.

    Thanks Dick,

It's nice to see that somebody from "Cougar Nation" sees really just how good Utah State basketball really is; you don't get 6 NCAA tournament berths in the past 10 years without being competitive. BYU really was lucky they won this game because of the horrible FT shooting and Tai Wesley's blunder at near the end of the game. Still, I have to give props to BYU for an excellent game played. We'll get you next time in Logan. Good game cougars :D

    Go Aggies.
