Actually, the one who acted dishonorably was Craig Thompson. In trying to prevent BYU from leaving, he went after three WAC schools. If they'd all agreed to join, the WAC would be dead and lose its auto bid to the NCAA basketball tournament. Even predatory moves are never made these days with designs to "kill" a conference and its unwanted members. When PAC tried to raid the Big 12, they knew it's leftovers would all find a good home - likely still in a BCS conference. But when Craig Thompson went after the WAC, it was to kill. And that left the New Mexico States and the SJSUs, etc. out in the cold with no fall-back. Pure nastiness if you ask me. If he only went for two schools, the WAC would have survived. But he went for just the right amount to effectively kill the conference. It's still probably dead, but the intent was nasty and getting noticed across the country.

You know what would be ironic is this: What if BYU and the cream of the MWC, WAC, C-USA & and one or two of the independents, all teamed up to form a NEW conference, maybe called the Great American Conference. If they could get 12 membes and formed a 2 division conf with a playoff each year, that would be a sight to behold. They would need to be the right teams, so the conf would qualify for BCS inclusion. I know it is a dream, but what if. . .?

The only thing hedgehog knows for sure is utah finished 3rd in the MWC last year and BYU beat utah in all mens sports expect for swimming and one baseball game.

We expect good things from utah in the PAC, they should compete for the league title their first year...however, they would only finish 3rd in the MWC. You girls took a step down by going to the PAC.

    Hedgehog's hedging:

Last week Hedghog stated Holmoe would be fired before the Washington game. Now He is asking the ? as to whether he will be fired before the game. Make up your mind, Hedge - will he be fired or not? BYU may well stay in the MWC this year to better determine their options, but they will not be crawling back, because they have never left, and will not leave until at least 2011. We will see by Sep 1 if it will be then or later. Have a good day Hedge. I see you arose early again to be the first poster.

What this all shows is how much power BYU has had all along, without really exercising it, much less abusing it.

It's that power (represented by their national following and high TV ratings, their history and tradition of great football games worth watching, and their consequent great relationship with ESPN) that makes some some people here so antagonistic towards BYU.

It's also that power that gives BYU so many great choices right now and so much leverage in the drama that's playing out (mostly behind the scenes).

I've lost all respect for Thompson. He's proven not a win/win thinker. In fact, I think he's a moron - doing a deal with Comcast and then expecting Comcast to negotiate a deal with competitors to get The mtn into more homes. And his little power play with Fresno State, Nevada, and Utah State, thus hurting and potentially destroying the WAC, thinking he's outsmarting BYU, is the kind of short-sighted thinking only an attorney would think is the right thing to do. What he did simply makes it MORE likely BYU will leave and thus use its power wisely to reward friends, not Thompson.

BYU is the bad guy because their revenue won't be there for redistribution. As a top MWC school,BYU should stay in the conference and pay their fair share of revenue for the benefit of the others. If BYU were to live by the honor code, they would'nt do such a hypocritical thing as going independent. How greedy!

So, BYU-haters, how, EXACTLY, is BYU the bad guy in all this?

I have yet to read a single, intelligent response to this same question but I'll give you a chance anyway.

BYU was simply trying to increase it's national exposure, you know, JUST LIKE UTAH was doing when it jumped ship to the PAC-10.

So don't give me any of this garbage about BYU being the bad guy for simply trying to achieve the same thing Utah did.

Seems to me that if anyone acted less than honorably it was Fresno State and Nevada for leaving the WAC without (so far) paying their $5million penalty even though DAYS before they told the WAC they were there to stay.

But go ahead, BYU-haters, let's see what you've got to say in response to my question....

The MWC made a big mistake with Fresno and Neveda. More teams to share the revenue while the bread winner goes independent. Should have been fairer with the bread winner and non of this would have happened. BYU shouldered the financial load to long. I wonder what will happen to Mountain West network?

BYU will be just fine. They're gonna do what's best for the university. If it doesn't get done by September 1st, I'm sure something will happen next year. So just hold your horses.

    To Hedgehog-
Do you have a full time job? I'm just wondering, cause maybe I'm in the wrong business. Wish I could sit around all day waiting for BYU articles to post on. To bad I gotta work!

It's funny that a couple of well known BYU fans think BYU might have to 'crawl' back to the MWC. As far as I know BYU has not let the MWC so I dont think it is possible to crawl back. Also, no one from BYU has said anything about all the news. Well founded or not they are still just rumors.

By the way, Fan means someone fanatically interested in a sports team. By any measure hedgehog and ChrisB are BYU fans since they obsess about BYU and dont seem to care about Utah.

As impatient as I am, I have great confidence in the leadership of President Samuelson and Tom Holmoe (not to mention the BYU Board of Trustees). BYU will do the right thing, the naysayers will spin it into a disaster, and the we will all get exactly what we are looking for.

BYU doesn't have to do any talking. Everyone else does it for them. September 1 may come and go without a word from BYU and yet thoughts and rumors of BYU abound.

BYU's goings on are understandably always important to me, but the real news story here is how important BYU apparently is to everyone else too.

Hedgehog! You're consistent. You need to find a doctor and get a presciption for your cougar envy. Maybe the Obama health care can find something you may qualify for.

These are frustrating times for impatient Cougar fans like myself. Who will start at QB? Answer now please. Will BYU still go independent? When will we finally know? I guess all we can really count on is that a week from Saturday BYU will face Washington at LES. Hopefully we'll all try to be supportive of Administrative/Coaching decisions. RE: Hedgehog Being a member of the MWC again wouldn't be so bad. Afterall, you no longer belong. Don't worry cause all that hatred and venom can be projected at the Colorado Buffaloes.

These kids heads are in so many different places right now I'm surprised to find they can even practice. "An announcement will be made blah blah blah". "Football against the WAC and other dynamic out of conference opponents, blah blah blah." "Basketball against the WCC blah blah blah." Practice must be like a soap opera of some sort and then you've got a heated battle over who's going to play qb with a coach who can't seem to stand newcomers with cocky attitudes. What a mess. Good thing they are "chosen" people who can overcome major distractions, or this camp would probably be a waste.

BYU is not crawling anywhere. The MTN will make the necessary concessions or BYU will make a move. It is only a matter of when, where and in what format.

BYU could play only 5 MTN games (or any conference for that matter) and still qualify as a member of that conference. There would have to be concessions on the TV contract for the other non MTN games. That may or may not happen.

BYU leaving is likely to influence TCU and BSU. That would gut the MTN.

The travel makes it a long shot but BYU might be able to cut non football deal with the Big 12 or another Midwest or East coast conference. BYU's basket ball attendance (both at home and on the road) makes them very attractive. BYU TV makes the other sports attractive.

BYU can afford to take their time on this.

The biggest question is what is TX, USC and other mega TV teams going to do? Are they going to make the TX option work or are they going to create super conferences?

What are ESPN/FOX/NBC etc going to promote. The TX option is better for them.

"The kewgs will be crawling back to the MWC."

BYU will have to swallow a super-sized portion of pride in returning to the MWC, but the tragic part is that the their dalliance with independence and the WAC may well leave Utah State and 4 or 5 other teams without a conference.

It's always the children who get hurt.

Hedgy, be patient, be patient. Wait for it. It is coming together. It will all make sense. Holmoe will get a raise. Just watch. It will be a nice move. Be patient. This is not a video game.

It's been 5 days since the supposed big anouncement was to take place. LOL!

With only seven days left for Holmoe to crawl out from under his bed and face the music.

Here's the reality tds: The kewgs will be crawling back to the MWC. Same limited exposure and (the kicker) LESS money.

Look for tds to be earning something in the range of 800 ger or 300 ger less than this time last week,

Once again, will Holmoe be let go before the Wash game..?
