"Without the illegals the price of fruits and vegetables must go up."

This is a lie. The employers may not WANT to pay a fair wage without passing the added cost to the consumer, but they CAN. It may mean one less vacation house in Ketchum, but they can.

It's easy to say you don't want them here and they should all be kicked out. Do you support inexpensive products? Do you like a good sale on vegetables or beef? Then you are supporting illegal immigration.

If the immigrants left, the jobs would follow because companies don't want to pay more for labor. Because WE don't want to pay more for products.

Companies taking even more production overseas would damage our economy way more than letting immigrants come legally.

How about answering the hard questions, Opi. Completely open borders? If not, how many do we absorb and how do we keep more than that from entering? Why are you so much smarter than those who have established immigration quotas? Do we accept all Mexicans but make those from other countries jump through the years of hoops we currently require? How do you ingrain a rule-of-law mentality on an entire group of people who have likely broken many laws to live and work here illegally? If illegal immigrants produce and contribute more than they cost, why is California practically bankrupt and Arizona getting there quickly?

When you have a heart, it's easy to say come and work and contribute. If you want to help someone from Mexico make a better life, you should sponsor someone legally and put your own reputation, stability and resources on the line to get them on their feet.

    On a totally unrelated topic...

I will be vacationing at the Grand Canyon This year!

Good for AZ and let's hope we get a law similar to AZ's next year!

    Illegal immigration/invasion is not a victim-less crime.

@cynic Are you saying then that we should continue to let illegal aliens steal the Social Security numbers of American children which under Utah law is a felony?

Have the studies you refer to included the cost of identity theft to the victims who suffer ruined credit, have arrest records attached to their names, are denied medical benefits and who have the medical records corrupted with life threatening consequences?

How do you value a person's good name when it is destroyed by someone using it illegally?

Are you willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of Utah children to identity theft in order to make a dollar?

All generalities are false. Stereotypes are just a means of justifying our own biases. Do all of you anti-immigration people realize that many studies have shown that illegal aliens contribute more to our economy than they cost us? Do you know that our economy would actually be harmed by sending them all home? Just wondering if anyone pays attention to these facts, or if you just respond with hatred and bias because it makes you feel good.

This is why these people should NEVER, EVER be allowed Amnesty. It is not just about the "rule of law." It also is about the principles of immigration control upon which immigration law is based, which include not only QUANTITY of immigrants, but also the QUALITY of their VALUES. Prospective immigrants should be willing to adopt our culture AND values and pledge their allegiance and loyalty to THIS country. Illegals, on the other hand, prove by their criminality and disrespect for this country that their values are SUBSTANDARD. To allow into this country tens of millions of people whose values are substandard would NOT be good for this country.

Opi: "If you and your family were hungry you'd consider coming here too."

Or they'd consider robbing a bank. But that wouldn't make it right.

And it is the type of people who think that it is right that we don't want in this country.

Those of us who follow this issue know that SSN's for children go for a premium price because it will be years before the child actually uses it - in most cases.

We MUST demand E-Verify get used by all, and those greedy employers who refuse to do so should lose their business license altogether.

Parents should not the last persons to find that their offspring's' SS numbers are being used in the other social services of the illegals. They should not be denied emergency care when others are using them to get jobs. Time to get a RID chips implanted so that they would not wait to see if it was legit! Those who steal ID's would have to reimburse for the trouble of taking their identifications away.

Opi | 7:58 a.m. As an open border advocate, are you saying that the over 4 Billion people on this planet that are poorer than the illegal Mexicans should all come to the United States in order to cure poverty? That would be a lot of people for us to take care of.

Now concerning the ID theft of children for the purpose of employment. This was the primary reason that SB-251 which mandates that Utah employers with over 15 employees use E-Verify to check new hires easily passed. This law goes into effect July 1, 2010.

During testimony on SB-251 a family testified that their 10 year old daughter was unable to get services she was entitled to was because her SSN was being used in Park City and Wendover.

The E-Verify program is free of cost to the employer. The only reason for employers not using it would be that they want to continue to hire cheap illegal labor, especially now, since the Obama Administration has stopped employer enforcement.

If you wish to see the Utah employers using E-Verify, "google" Utah illegal immigration, and go to UFIRE. E-Verify is in sidebar

    opi @7:58

HOW MANY should we let in?

2 million?, 50 million? Keep in mind, lots of Indonesians, Koreans, etc., would love to come here and undercut even Mexican workers. Or is it o.k. to come here if you run across the desert, but NOT OKAY if you sneak in on a boat?

Yes, and if immigrants were given SSNs and let in legally none of this would be a problem.

They'd pay their own taxes too.

It's our own stupid laws that cause these problems.

If you and your family were hungry you'd consider coming here too. Afterall, American employers love illegal immigrants they can exploit. Immigrants love that the pay is so much higher than in Mexico.

HOLD ON A SECOND. An illegal immigrant committing a crime? I can't imagine why someone who has a history of breaking the law would again be breaking the law.

    SUPPORT ARIZONA!!!!

Cases like this happen thousands of times a day by illegal aliens using forged or stolen documents to get work. Most of the time it will only be discovered long after the fact. If the parents of this child hadn't needed to use his social security number, it would probably have been YEARS before the crime had been discovered.

Cases like these highlight the fact that the Utah legislature needs to draft a new law similar to Arizona's, with this addition: that those businesses that hire an illegal, either knowingly or negligently, will be prosecuted. In this case, a simple check should have shown that the employee was not, in fact, an infant! Give some teeth to the laws, and set aside funds for their enforcement. If this happens, cases like these will dwindle tremendously.

I hope Governor Herbert reads this story....Get that E-Verify Bill going and put some teeth in it and make it law! Stop State welfare, Medical, School aid and all the other freebies this state is giving to Illegals! Give them nothing but a bottle of water and a sack lunch, on their way back to mexico. Support Arizona and pass the same law here. or we the people will vote someone in office who will take care of Americans not Illegals!

This is sad for someone to do this to an infant for their own self needs.Prosecute to the fullest extent of the law then deport her sorry butt along with the entire family! It's stuff like this is why people are so miffed.Federal gov't won't do their jobs and when a governor does what the feds won't do and they climb down her throat for doing it what is wrong with this picture? The Dems want that vote from these people and for us to foot the bill!

I'm sick and tired of this situation.

This happens all of the time. Many times, SSNs are sold to a few people before someone catches on. They know what they are doing and will get away with it as long as possible. Don't tell me she was doing a job what people won't do, because I am a white person and did janitorial work at one time also. I didn't have to use a baby's SSN to do it either.
On the other side of the coin, my deceased father in law, also white, used to open $ accounts in the grandchildren's names so he wouldn't have to pay taxes on gains. Cheats come in every color and persuasion.
