    Exactly.First smart person.

  • Question?
    April 1, 2010 5:21 p.m.

So what is everyone's thoughts on Rich next year? Are they going to be any good? Who will they even have?

    March 30, 2010 1:20 p.m.

Look, rich might be the awesomest but not next year when all seniors will be gone.So rich for next year, 0 points.

actually Facemyer averaged 4 steals and a block and a half a game. Nichols averaged 2 steals. They both are dynamic offensive players but I agree they need to work on their defense. They both deserved to be All-State, though.

  • RE: RE: everyone
    March 28, 2010 4:27 p.m.

rich is the awesomest, that is exactly why they did not play for the championship and lost to piute. good job RE: everyone, there isn't even an everyone to "RE:"

  • re: miners fan baby
    March 20, 2010 2:34 p.m.

It's because all these all state teams are based 99.9999% on scoring! They are totally blind to the defense and the pass, steals, leadership roles ect... They really need to have a offensive team and defensive team!

    March 20, 2010 11:45 a.m.

Why is Brayden Facemyer of lihoina on the 1a Second team, he is all about offense, he doesn't even play defense. But Brandon Nicholas Of Lihona Does deserve it (especially because he knows what Defense is)

  • re:next year
    March 20, 2010 11:34 a.m.

Good top five, I'd swap Milford for Duchesne and don't sleep on Wasatch Academy. Can someone schedule a Whitehorse v Liahona rematch! Martin and Dickson vs Facemyer and Nichols round 2! Facemyer and Dickson are two of the funnest kids to watch.

  • next year
    March 20, 2010 11:03 a.m.

Rich won't even be a top five school next year. This year was their chance and they failed. Next year will be fun with the majority of the top teams outside of region twenty and sixteen. My top five next year are...
1.Monticello - They bring back the big guy need I say more?
2.Liahona - Those two guards are special, especially if they can learn to distribute to their other two returning starters
3.Bryce Valley - Their returning the better of the two Roundy brothers, they'll have the experience.
4.Whitehorse - They're returning a point guard that is crazy good
5.Duchesne - They return practically everyone from a pretty good team this year.

    Worth mentioning...
Milford, Wasatch Academy, Piute and Rich

  • Rich....
    March 19, 2010 3:02 p.m.

won't ever take a state championship in basketball! If this years "Emaculate Conception Class" couldn't pull it off, the lesser talented boys of the future have no chance!

Rich just doesnt seem to have an answer for a region twenty team they have the team to win the title but in the end they just cant do it. Because those southern regions are just to good

  • re: wondering
    March 18, 2010 7:10 p.m.

I'm pretty sure Rich played for championship in 1998 and then again in either 2002 or 2003.

we didn't start that, we'll have the same chance as we've had and it will be a rough season, and is it not for everyone, im lookin forward to next year

WA did choke with BV...With freshman 2 soph and 2 jun as a starting 5 so next year when all those " good " seniors will be gone who do you think will be one of the best ? Well season is over and coaches picked their picks. We all need to get ready for the next season.

I say congrats to Caden Anderson of rich. He is very deserving of the MVP. As a 1A coach it has been a great thing to watch him play the past four years. He is a roll model in rich, as well as in my town were I coach. He might not know that, but he has gave some of my younger players a vision of what they should excell to at the least. I have watced and coached against many of the great names listed above, but Caden is the MVP right where he should be. Congrats to the rest of the field of players. IT was a great year to be in 1A basketball.

Couldn't have been said better. If they were the best all year they would have been the best at the end of the year also. Third place isn't so bad, except that there are two better than you. That's how this year, Rich's seniors, will be remembered in basketball! Don't be too sad though, you'll always be remembered as a great 8th grade and Jr. High team!

Rich, when are you guys going to give up? When are you going to learn that the game isn't played on stat sheets, but the court? You can throw all your season wins & stats out the window come state tourny time. You claim Rich should have 5 players on the all state team, be happy with the Andersen boy as MVP, questionable, and the Calder boy on the 2nd team! Maybe if you guys could win a championship you might get more on the all state teams or at least mentioned! Yes you had a great season, but not a great tournament! If you were the best in a four day tourny, you would be champs!, but your not! Just be happy with placing,Again!

  • Re: not as silly as you think
    March 17, 2010 5:14 p.m.

I really appreciated your comments. They were spot on, especially your statement about the best player on the court being the smart little point guards that get the high point man the ball! I'm not taking away from their ability to shoot and score, but it takes a floor general to get them the ball! ie: Stockton to Malone! To be able to make that sweet pass, nail a defender to the floor with a cross over dribble, spin move etc. To play that full court pressure defense, making or creating steals! To be the only one out front driving for a lay up after busting his hump to steal the ball & just before he goes for the score he makes a pass to his trailer instead and lets him have the points! I hope that all these high scoring MVP's would say that without their own Stockton's they could'nt have achieved such individual status as MVP! There truly is more to the game than the high point man!

I didnt see any Wasatch kids that dominated. I did see a WA team choke against eventual state champs Bryce Valley.

Why would not 2 kids from Wasatch be there in all state mention ?

  • Congrats to all
    March 16, 2010 2:52 p.m.

Of course every kid who plays high school basketball would like to make the all-state first team. That isn't reality. Instead of acting like poor sports and fools, let's congratulate the kids who do earn the honors. Let's respect the coaches' choices. They see the game and players from a better perspective than those of us who just observe. Let's thank the Deseret News for all of their efforts to recognize our high school athletes. They do a fabulous job and make the banquet and Jazz game an experience these kids will always remember. Thanks to the players, the coaches and the Des News for making this a fun basketball season.

  • State and votes
    March 16, 2010 2:36 p.m.

It only makes sense that if you don't play in the state tourney for all of the coaches in the other regions to watch you, you probably don't have much of a chance to get their votes. Rightly so. There's just not a better way to do it. Also-coaches know that it takes a lot more than scoring to make an all-state level player.

  • Not as silly as you think
    March 16, 2010 2:26 p.m.

Some of these comments are what is silly. Not many people know the game as well as the coaches who vote. The coaches know what players they have to work their defense around. The high scorer is not always the best player on the floor. There are cherry pickers who score a lot off of the efforts of others. The best player is often the ball handler who is able to get the ball through the defense, is smart enough to see the floor and know when to give an assist. He's not always the high scoreman. Give the coaches the credit they deserve.

  • @ Green River
    March 16, 2010 1:36 p.m.

Well if makes you feel any better the state's leading scorer, 1a through 5a, plus 1a's top three-point shooter only had two coaches vote for him. Didn't even make 3rd team. That should give you an idea how silly this thing is.

  • The whole thing is politics
    March 16, 2010 11:59 a.m.

If it was not about politics, rich would have five guys in all state. They were the best all year, not just four days

"After Kace Roundy, Bryce Valley's star player, fouled out early in the fourth quarter, all of the supporting players made brilliant plays"

"although Caden is the better player, in cruch time Kace was able to carry his team to victory and Caden was not"

Wow that shounds like he was real effective in carrying his team to victory to me. How does sitting on the bench carry your team to victory?

The MVP is as it should be Caden is the better player overall rather his team won the championship or not!!!

    March 16, 2010 11:24 a.m.

humm those guys were good but not as good as the ones on the list and if there is a discrepancy I would say it is the MVP Tyson Westwood was the best there not only for his team but overall. I am not from Piute.

  • Green River assistant coach
    March 16, 2010 10:15 a.m.

The stats that were cited about Johnson are pretty accurate. He averaged 23 points and 10.5 boards a game. Those stats were submitted to Des News by myself three times, but they have yet to put all the correct stats on our page. It's probably right though about not playing on the fourth day. But getting him on second team isn't bad coming from our little town...

  • Green River
    March 16, 2010 9:58 a.m.

A quick look at the Des News stat page verifies that those stats are accurate - at least points wise.. It would seem coaches put alot of merit in how far a player advances his team. All of the first team players were on teams that played on the 4th day of the tournament. Only Johnson and Robbie Giles of Tabiona made the second team and were from teams that did not play all 4 games. I would guess had Green River beaten Liahona or Tabby defeated Panguich they would have been first team. To be first or second team you must not only be a great player but also good enough to get your team deep into the playoffs.

The suprise to me is that the MVP is Caden Anderson and not Kace Roundy. I watched both players and although Caden is the better player, in cruch time Kace was able to carry his team to victory and Caden was not.

Over all and as usual the Des News All State teams are more accurate than the Trib.

  • Re: Basketball Fan
    March 16, 2010 9:24 a.m.

ummm.....He didn't get enough votes?? Just saying, that's the way it works! The very beginning of the article says that it is based on a coaches vote and that 21 of 28 coaches in 1A voted.

  • r those stats legit
    March 16, 2010 9:09 a.m.

If those stats are right I will be suprised. If they are right then wow he is a monster.

    March 16, 2010 8:38 a.m.

Why isn't the Johnson boy from Green River 1st team?!?! Anyone that saw that kid play knows he is a monster and one of the best. He averaged what 25 points 15 boards 5 blocks a game at the state tourney?
