    March 9, 2010 10:28 a.m.

That's some flawed logic. Why don't you give credit where credit is due? You give Cornell credit for only losing by 15 over two top 10 teams? How about giving BYU credit, using the same logic, for losing by 4 and 2 points respectively to a top-10 team? How about credit for beating a top-25 team, on the road, even without Fredette, their leading scorer? How about crushing pretty much every team that they were supposed to beat this year? Their 4 losses are all against teams that are predicted to go the NCAA tournery. They have also beat 5 teams that are predicted to go to the tourney. Does Cornell have that good a resume? Cornell has not beat one team in the top-50 RPI. They've lost to two other teams outside the top-50 and their best win was against #78 St. Johns (they've only played 7 teams in the top-100). Their resume also includes a 15 point loss to #304 Penn. So how exactly will BYU lose if they play Cornell in the first round? BYU would win by 20!

  • Once Again...
    March 9, 2010 9:50 a.m.

The league requirement to have the Utes on our schedule just pulls us down. Would you please just take Boilin' and your Circus to the PAC-10 and become the anchor in their conference already? We're getting pretty tired of you messing up our SOS!

i cant really tell scarism through boards so i hope your not being serious, How about Over-rated byu is good but #14 who have they beaten to be considered the 14th best team in the country... and as far as being the best team west of the Mississippi have you ever heard of kansas their only considered the best team in the country but yeah byu would blow them out, same goes for kansas st, gonzaga, st marys, and if unm makes it to the confrence championship the y will prove that unm beating them twice was a fluke

  • Cornell 74- BYU 69
    March 9, 2010 12:09 a.m.

    Cornell resume

Loss to Syracuse (away) by 15
Loss to (1) Kansas (away) by 15

    RPI 48

At least they played two top 10 teams respectable on the road!

BYU has played and lost to New Mexico twice and beat UTEP on the road.

Whipee- like BYU has extensive NCAA tourney experience! McEnroe- Are you kidding me!

  • Dear Osgrath-
    March 8, 2010 11:43 p.m.

On top of correctly predicting 64 of the 65 tournament teams in 2008, Bracketology 101 also became the first bracketology site to ever seed 40 teams exactly and 60 teams within one seed line of their actual seed. Through 2009, we are the only bracketology site to earn this distinction.

Looks like they get it when it comes to placing teams in the "dance".

You, like so many BYU fans, spout opinion without backing it up. Where in your meaningless rant should the mighty Cougs be seeded? Won't be 1, 2,3,or 4. So that makes them a 5 or 6. Most likely six because they won't win the MWC tourney.

St. Mary's could beat BYU with 4 players on the court. Did you see them dismantle Gonzaga tonight. Take a koolaid break!

  • Osgrath
    March 8, 2010 11:00 p.m.

Predictions are easy to make, Mr. One-and-done. I might have paid attention to yours but you have Cornell beating BYU - an Ivy league team with absolutely no NCAA tournament experience? I'm not even sure that St. Mary's and Xavier are givens. This is not the same Xavier team that went so far into the tourney a couple of years ago. I would also not predict the Florida matchup because, again Horford and Noah are no longer playing there.

There is a big flaw in your logic. Bracketology 101 is not on the selection committee. The sixth seed for BYU is meaningless - as are their seedings of the other teams.

  • RivertonCoug
    March 8, 2010 10:31 p.m.

Please Coogs, just win the MWC tourney!! You will need to get past Utah or UNLV to get to a rematch with UNM. I believe in you. I think.

  • Rankings and more
    March 8, 2010 10:15 p.m.

I keep reading about pathetic rankings and about the under rated Cougars. I think the Cougars are really good and could make some noise in the tournament, however, they lost twice to New Mexico. You cannot compare the fact the New Mexico barely beat Utah and only beat TCU by 7 and that BYU beat both of them soundly. New Mexico beat BYU twice and New Mexico is west of the Mississippi. Utah State beat BYU. The records of who beat who makes no difference, Utah State beat BYU. All three are good teams. Cougar fans have nothing to be ashamed of, the Cougars have had a great year. Lets stop the "yea buts" and call it like it is, the Cougars went 0-3 against New Mexico and Utah State. I think that is what drives me crazy about Cougar fans is how they try to rationalize how good they are when the final out come on the court against a particular opponent says other wise. Let me add that the Cougars are lots better than the Utes.

  • Re: FrancoBlue
    March 8, 2010 10:05 p.m.

You are kidding right??? You cant take away from BYU the fact that the have a great record this season and have destroyed some horrible teams but 9th in the nation give me a break.

  • One-and-done
    March 8, 2010 9:59 p.m.

Braketology 101 has BYU as a 6 seed and these teams in the eleven spot.

If the Cougs get St. Mary's - one-and-done.

If the Cougs get Florida -one-and-done.

If the Cougs get Cornell - one-and-done.

If the Cougs get Xavier - one-and-done.

  • underranked
    March 8, 2010 9:40 p.m.

BYU is one the top ten teams in the country although not ranked in the top ten. This will show clearly in the Mountain West Conference tournament where BYU easily wines.

  • Over Ranked
    March 8, 2010 9:06 p.m.

No, not BYU, not UNM! Gonzaga has to be the most over ranked team in the top 25!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey aggies
    March 8, 2010 8:50 p.m.

You guys sure are special. Remember when BYU had their 1-25 season with that interim coach because their head coach got fired? Now who was it again that BYU beat that year to get their one and only win? Hmmmmm...having a tough time remembering...gee was it....hmmmmm....a little help, anyone?

  • FrancoBlue
    March 8, 2010 8:31 p.m.

No disrespect to New Mexico, but BYU just barely lost to them and has destroyed teams that New Mexico struggled to beat. It obvious that voters nationwide are bias against BYU. With their record and talent they should be ranked at least #9.

  • To Dallas Aggie @5:53
    March 8, 2010 8:24 p.m.

And if Utah State played with the same passion they played with BYU in all their games, they would be undefeated and, they would be ranked in the TOP 5 nationally. I mean heck if you want to compare, then lets compare. BYU lost to 4 teams with a combined record of 104-19 and yep, you were one of those teams. Now of course USU lost 6 games and to be fair, I threw out the two teams you lost to that were 14-16 and 15-15. I only added up the win/loss columns of the best teams you lost to who had a combined 86-37 record. Yep, looks like you are right, you are a better team. I mean You beat us, we beat Utah, Utah beat you so that makes you such a superior team, one to be reckoned with. HAHAHAHAHA. I will say however good luck to the Aggies, they deserve to be there which is better than what you even have the intelligence to recognize for BYU.

Love all the silly comments from "mature" BYU fans. Congrats to the Y on a great year, and the miracle ranking you currently have. I am happy for you. It blows my mind that everyone talks about our Strength of Schedule being light, yet it is several points stronger than BYU per rpi. Oh and by the way, we beat you. Love that. Congrats to the U for beating us this year. It is a definite rivalry game, but I believe we are up in the count for the last 10 years against the U. So glad to have such a stud coach in Stew Morrill. Love our team and how much fun they are having. Anytime you can get a bunch of balding RMs to beat BYU at their own game of mature RMs.....classic! Go Aggies!

  • Duh
    March 8, 2010 5:36 p.m.

I wouldn't have expected anything different. We beat a couple on nobody's, simple as can be. If we had played some high ranking teams than their is a valid complaint. It would not have made much of a difference. All they have to do is win the MWC tournament and everything else will take care of itself.

  • Bandwagon Aggie Fan
    March 8, 2010 5:17 p.m.

Maybe if BYU schedule better OOC games they might move up. It doesn't matter anyways 0-7 in NCAA in last 7 games. One and done here we come.

  • GoodGuyGary
    March 8, 2010 4:28 p.m.

Ranking is not as important for college basketball than college football. Let's just win every game from now on.

  • Hooray!
    March 8, 2010 4:25 p.m.

UTEP, a team BYU beat on their home court without Jimmer is now ranked! So now BYU has a win against a ranked team! Hooray! Of course, that makes them 1-2 against currently ranked opponents, but who cares? They beat a currently ranked team! Hooray!

  • Don't forget Utah!
    March 8, 2010 4:19 p.m.

Utes unchanged in the polls as well.

  • Go Big Blue!!!
    March 8, 2010 4:19 p.m.

15 in a row as of Saturday. Most likely 18 in a row Saturday. The Aggies are playing the best team ball in the West.

  • re: Under-rated
    March 8, 2010 4:16 p.m.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but UNM's Hobson just edged out Jimmer for MWC PoY.

Which at the end of the day does not matter. The Cougars are a team-a very deep and talented team and need to focus their efforts on winning one game at a time in Vegas.

As a long-time Cougar fan, the only thing I truly wish for this season is at least one victory in the NCAA's. One would make me happy and two or more delirious! Just get that darn "one and done" monkey off our backs.

Honestly, this is a team that could make a run deep into March if they stay intense and focused and unselfish.

    Go Cougs!!!

Hopefully the Cougars have swallowed their share of "choke cherries" this year in the losses to New Mexico. Now if they can only figure out a way to beat UNLV on the road, they might have a good chance of winning a post-season game.

  • Opinions "Polls"
    March 8, 2010 3:00 p.m.

I was surprised that the Y didn't move up, in spite of posting two big road victories, with their star player limping along, and their bench coming up big. It shows team depth.

I have to remind myself that polls are simply someone's opinion. Unfortunately those polls help determine the seeding for the Big Dance.

At least College Basketball allows their champion to be decided on the court, unlike football.

  • Under-rated
    March 8, 2010 2:54 p.m.

This rating will undoubtably change after BYU wins the MWC tournament by a large margin in all three games. They are the best team west of the Mississippi and have at least two all-conference players in their starting five as well as the conference player of the year(Jimmer Freddette), the conference freshman of the year(Tyler Hawes), the best coaching staff in the country, and the best incoming recruiting class in the conference. New Mexico will drop out of the top ten when they lose in the conference tournament. BYU is playing the best basketball of the season now and will disregard the sleazy people and environment of Las Vegas and win the MWC tournament.

  • Time to stand UP
    March 8, 2010 2:50 p.m.

If any team is deserving from this point on they need to WIN THEIR GAMES. That goes for Utah, USU and BYU. You loose and you are out. Just Win.

Cougars, just win your next 9 games and you are THE NUMBER ONE TEAM IN AMERICA. But at least win your next four games. JUST DO IT!

    Go cougars!!
Impressive jpb this year and it is time to win some games during march madness!!!!!!!

  • Polls unchanged
    March 8, 2010 2:36 p.m.

but, as long a you keep winning, moving up in the polls often depends more on what teams just above you did, than on what you did

bottom line: as long as BYU doesn't let TCU steal one in the opening round of the MWC tournament, the Cougars will get no less than a #6 seed, and could get as high as a #3 seed by winning the tournament.

BYU has NEVER lost an opening round game in the NCAA tournament with a #6 or higher seed

    March 8, 2010 2:35 p.m.

With the season coming to an end like this, BYU was stuck in the middle of some teams that won, so it didnt surprise me much that they didnt move up in the rankings.

    March 8, 2010 2:28 p.m.

It would be fun to see these two teams play each other in the tournament. At least one of them would finally get a win in the big dance! I went to the USU Marquette game last year in Boise. USU played well but fell apart in the last 4 minutes after being up 6 points. It was to bad they missed a golden oppertunity to get a win in the NCAA tournament. BYU and USU have a lot in common, huge home court advantages, good teams, good coaches that don't seem to get it done in the big dance. Neither team has had great seeds either but maybe this year will be different for the Y and the Aggies.

  • Logical
    March 8, 2010 2:24 p.m.

Look, for all you Utes that are yipping about "one and done", wouldn't it be better to be "one and done" in the NCAA tournament rather than the MWC Tournament or the WAC tournament? Just a thought, after the way your season has gone and the way your program is headed, which is even worse. Limited talent coming back, leadership that's even worse; ouch, that spells doom for a once respectable program. You're lagging way behind both shades of blue. And, you know it!! No one is unaware, but some choose to lie to themselves!!
As for seating, everyone also knows BYU gets "pigeon holed" because of the "won't play on Sunday thing". Call it whinning if you want but the truth is, it takes more than just a special year to get any kind of respect. As for Chris Hill, he couldn't care less where they were. No loss there for BYU or the conference.

  • Re: Aggie Man
    March 8, 2010 2:22 p.m.

I can't disagree with anything you've said. It's fun that the Aggies are doing well in basketball, this is their time of year since football season brings nothing to the table. The Utes, on the other hand, are counting down the days until football comes back, since this time of season lately has been as bitter as football in the fall in Logan. Fortunately BYU fans have both seasons to look forward to year-in and year-out and that doesn't look to change anytime soon. Here's hoping both USU and Utah can get their respective doormat programs into prominance again so the rivalries can flourish all year long!

  • Re; stupid

  • Aggie Man
    March 8, 2010 1:39 p.m.

I am a die hard Aggie fan and not a Cougar fan at all. It doesn't bother me though to say the Cougs have a good team this year and could make some real noise in the Big Dance. The quality of their team is why it felt so good to beat them this year in the Spectrum and I mean that as a compliment, not a slight. I'm not surprised they didn't move up the top twenty five list. It's a lot harder to move up the top half of it than the bottom half. As for the Ags, I'm not concerned that they didn't crack the top 25 this week. There's a lot of talented teams in similar situations. Let's just win the next three to guaruntee a trip the the dance and hopefully slip into the top 25. For the BYU poster that has an issue with Wild Bill - why turn your nose up at fans just having a good time? By doing so you only give validity to the people accusing BYU fans of being prudish and boring.

  • Unfair
    March 8, 2010 12:46 p.m.

Utah State not being ranked is just disrespect and unfairness on the part of those that vote. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Three WAC championships in a row, a fifteen game winning streak and a high RPI rating. If this doesn't show disrespect and unfairness, then I don't know what is. Shame, shame . . . shame

  • Way to go USU
    March 8, 2010 12:37 p.m.

Congratulations on also holding your position in the polls in the "others receiving votes" category. Very impressive. Sounds like the voters aren't going to give you any respect unless you win the wac tourney. But hey, I could be wrong, maybe not even then. Makes a lot of sense to me since you lost to utah.

Maybe they'd take you more seriously if you took yourselves more seriously and banned fat Wild Bill antics from the games instead of looking like a high school by allowing him to do his weird stuff.

  • re: chris hill
    March 8, 2010 12:27 p.m.

Last year was Hill's final one of being on the selection committee. That was a BIG reason his team got such a high seed, it was merely a generous parting gift from his selection committee buddies. Proof was in the pudding they didn't deserve a 5 seed.

Now the posturing begins. Keeping the Cougars pat in the standings is the first step in giving them as weak a seeding as they can in the NCAA tournament.

BYU better win the MWC tournament, or the committee snobs will use any sign of weakness to give the Cougars as bad a seeding as they feel they can get away with.

No sour grapes here. Just stating past history.

P.S. You can bet BYU's first round opponent will be a team that the committee is sure will give the Cougars enough fits to kick'em out again. Maybe Notre Dame, who's been killing top teams lately, or even Cal with hopes the Pac-10 can one-up the MWC after such a sorry season for that league.

  • Re: Pathetic

By the way, New Mexico was unchanged in the polls, after playing only 1 game, against TCU, at home, a game in which they only managed to win by 7 points. BYU plays that same team, on the road, wins by 30, also plays on the road against Utah, beats them by 20 and it wasn't even that close. New Mexico was barely able to squeak by Utah in SLC in overtime just a couple weeks ago. You tell me who had the more impressive week...Oh well, bring on the tournament!
