Let's face it, this team is a great team.
They have great shooters/guards ( just what Rose likes) but w/ OUT A BIG MAN they are just decent & will not finish STRONG.
I'm thinking ROSE should actually care about his big men & help them to improve their game. Until he actually HIRES a big man coach then they will just be a decent team just like in the past.

Don't be too hard on BYU or any other team in this conference. This is one of the best conferences in the country with 3 top 25 teams.

Right now we need to support the top 4 teams and hope we get 3 or maybe 4 teams invited to the dance. BYU will surprise folks this year by winning at least 1 game in the tourney and at least 2 teams will win 2 games each. UNLV has shown that it can play on the rode and win. All of this helps our MWC teams recruit top quality players making our league stronger yet. Go MWC!

Eveyone know's that I am a true blue BYU fan. But, I agree with the writer above-----BYU player's are standing around watching the game go on, instead of hustling to the ball as they were at the start of the season. Come on guys get too the ball, and let's win the MWC.

Can't BYU get some beef in the front court? Who handles the weight training for the team? Get all the bigs in the weight room; and even the smalls...PLEASE! This Saturday was a sorry debacle that will hurt the BYU program. The UNLV coaching staff was able to totally exploit the helterskelter style of BYU play. BYU throws so many goofy passes and casts off some many 3's trying to force things that are not there. The coaching staff needs to communicate the concept that every posession has a value. The teams that work the 35 second clock kill fast running schemes of teams like the Cougars. The Utes and Rebels are the Runnin' teams I thought. Are we to call the Cougars the runnin' Cougars now? I don't think so. If you live by the sword (excessive 3's) you die by it. With Utah lossing by 15 to CSU in SLC if appears the Cougars will have an adventure in Laramie and Fort Collins in that roady.

Who cares about the rest of the season? Who cares about how well BYU has played in the previous games? They had a bad game against a team having a great game and they lost, so now their season is over.

Oh wait, I'm beginning to sound like an irrational BYU hater (aka Utah fan). Sorry about that.

I am a Ute fan, I am sad to say I feel the Cougars BB team is for real. But this raises the big question once again, how will they do in the tourney, 1st round especialy?

to clarify the post for you.

If the Cougars get a favorable seed and get teams from the bottom 1/2 RPI conferences who the Cougars are more athletic than, then they will likely win the game.

However, if the Cougars get matched up against a "BCS" conference team that has tall, athletic teams that play aggressive defense, hustle to the ball, fight for every rebound, as is the case with most teams in those conferences, then the outside bombers the Cougars have will likely be shown the door early.

    Clear enough for ya?

BYU needs to learn how to develop big men before they will ever have a big strong center.

Coach Rose's offense flows from the outside and the bigs are there to rebound the ball and pass it back out to the guards.

Trent Plaisted left no better than when he got to BYU.
Miles will also leave BYU no better than when he first got to BYU>

The elite teams almost always have some athletic and/or bruiser types down low that add a dimension that Roses' teams have always lacked.

Get some beef and muscle on the post, teach them well and MAKE THEM PART OF YOUR GAMEPLAN and you'll see that the current posts are more than adequate for the job.

BYU not a powerful inside team or rebounding team. They do need a strong center. Still it seems they draw a nice crowd wherever they go. Other schools must enjoy the revenue.

  • What has happened?
    Feb. 7, 2010 3:19 p.m.

What the heck has happened to Hawes? He was shooting so well and now he can't make anything. Also wonder what has happened to Emery's confidence? He also is not shooting like he was earlier. For that matter, what has happened to the confidence of the whole Cougar team? Seems like lately their shooting is tight and rushed. Also seems like they pop up jumpers instead of milking the possessions for good shots.

  • To one and done
    Feb. 7, 2010 1:44 p.m.

Maybe the Cougars are one and done. Funny thing is, the Utes are in the same conference and the Cougars have been the champions of the conference for the last 4 years. Also, Utah is below .500 and already lost to BYU. I hope your neck isn't too sore from looking up to BYU for so long. Don't worry, Jimmer will be gone in 2012.

"You heard it here first (12:04)" just said absolutely nothing. Cougs will "likely" not make it "far"? What does that mean? They only win one game? Two maybe? Three? And that is "likely"? Or probably? or...? So yeah...we heard it here first...we heard nothing.

If the Utes can beat UNLV in vegas I guess UNLV has another loss coming in SLC, right? Or not!

Cougars are a great team when the outside shots are falling.

However, make them slow it down, hit high percentage shots, or make them come from behind and they don't have what it takes.

Brilliant observation that the players were all trying to make 10 point plays.

Cougs will likely not make it far in the NCAA tourney when they face some of the bigger, in your face, tough defense teams from the major conferences. The Cougs need to toughen up so when they play teams that don't let them bomb away from 3-land they can gut out a win in some other fashion.
