Ha Ha these comments are hilarious. I don't really care who wins I just want it to be an on the edge of your seat game (like last year). The comment on BYU fans dropping the "flip" and "fetch" bomb made me laugh out loud. BYU and Utah fans are so opposite. My prediction, many BYU fans get offended by some of the Utah fans. Gotta love college football. I hope the score is within single digits and comes down to a single play.

    Like I said before...

You Who-tah? fans are killing me...

If you love your team so much, how come during your precious UCLA win at home this year, your stadium was only half full?

    Hilarious.

Prediction: BYU wins the opening toss and defers the kick - and Utah's opening kickoff is an onside kick. Classic.

One Love to Kanye West and Mitt Romney in 2008.

    BYU - 35

    Who-tah? - 15 (5 Sakoda Field Goals)

Has anyone check "versus" website? I think they are showing BYU-Utah game this weekend. I am not sure how it works though. Disclaimer: I had nothign to do with the website, I just did a Google search and found it and want to share it with all the BYU-Utah Fans.

After 4 more days, it will become impossible for UTAH to win.

    Nov. 20, 2007 10:47 p.m.

So which is it? Live in the now and the fact that you won last year? Or should the utes fan live in the past and talk about the last 7 years in LES? The problem with that is BYU fans say hey we won last year out of one side of their mouth then say you should take the longer look back. But why is it the longer look back only goes as far back as they want? Look at the entire series to see Utah has history on their side.

Isn't it great that this game will be on CSTV along with the MTN? I'll be able to watch it at home! Hurray!! Cold day, warm food, family over watching and cheering. We might care who wins during the game, but once it's over...no big deal. We'll have fun watching.
Our only genuine concern is that none of these young athletes get injured.

If the Ute Indians don't like being associated with a losing football program, then they should either take legal action or - better yet - JOIN THE YEWTS in LES this Saturday!

Bring the whole tribe and BYU will STILL kick some trash!

  • Yewtes going down
    Nov. 20, 2007 1:46 p.m.

This is our time to shine. Utah just got lucky to win the games they did this year. Byu all the way 38-34 Utah scores on the last drive but they still come up short and the Sea of Blue at LES goes nuts storm the field 2nd straight MWC title.

  • BYU Fan
    Nov. 20, 2007 1:11 p.m.

Regarding the stadiums...I was recently in Rice Stadium for the Utah High School football championships and thought to myself, "this is a really nice stadium...for a junior college." It was nice, but 45,000 seats compared to 64,000 is a large difference.

And if BYU ever closes in the corners of their stadium it will put them around 80,000.

    Sorry Yewtes!!

If BYU is such a small pizza parlor in such a big city, what does that make the Utes?

Answer: Barely a stale piece of crust!

    Go Cougars!

  • SLYKAT
    Nov. 20, 2007 8:41 a.m.

The lil yewts fans are so giddy to talk about the past few years where they've been so "dominant". All you have to say to get the lil yewt fans to shut their pie holes is look at the past 40 years in the rivalry...BYU OWNS this rivalry with a 65% winning percentage (26-14). Nuff said.

  • Seating & Fans
    Nov. 20, 2007 7:58 a.m.

    To "cougar fans":

LES seating capacity exceeds that of half of the PAC-10 teams as well as teams like GA Tech, Virginia, and Purdue. More importantly, where it really counts (i.e., fans in those seats) BYU ranked 26th in the nation last year, ahead of programs like West Virginia, Oregon, Missouri and Virginia. Guess where the Utes fell? #49. Down there with UTEP and Stanford.

Mendenhall is reclaiming LES and the Cougars are going to "hold serve" in their own house on Saturday.

  • Re Cougar Stadium
    Nov. 20, 2007 7:27 a.m.

    ...Because....

There is only one game per year that the Utes live for.

    Otherwise, I'd say apathy.

RES wasn't even added on because of demand, it was the Olympics.

Funny thing, if they had put 80,000 seats at LES, they would fill it every week.

I guess with the extra Utah fans you mentioned, who go to see a real team play.

  • Reality Police
    Nov. 20, 2007 1:40 a.m.

    To "cougar fans":

    LaVell Edwards Seating Capacity: 64,045

  • CalifCoug
    Nov. 20, 2007 12:34 a.m.

    Sigh.
Can only hope the Eewwts players take after so many their fans, full of themselves and overhyped, paying little attention to the big picture, focusing on small matters that make them seem more than they are. Utah is still spasming over a couple of years of notable accomplishment, trying to make it big enough to compensate for decades of mediocre at best.
Can only hope the Coogs players don't take after so many of their fans, posturing like they can take it for granted they're better because they were for a whole generation. This team is capable of rising up and laying waste to an opponent who might be full of themselves, if they're not distracted by playground machismo.
Then they would remind us of the teams which did clearly stand out for decades- a lot longer era than the Urban Legend.

  • Cougar Stadium
    Nov. 20, 2007 12:24 a.m.

The reason we dont fill RES is it isnt as much our home field as LES. Look at the last 7 games at both places 5-2 at RES and 6-1 at our home away from home.

  • Oh no
    Nov. 20, 2007 12:19 a.m.

it's the "best pizza" post again. Gee yoot fan that one never gets old, does it. Yes I agree yoot fans make the best pizza as they put their degrees to good use slaving away behind all the pizza counters in Utah.

And as for claiming who-tah is the "best" team, yeah typical yoot logic demonstrated there. The "best" team always has the most conference losses, right who-tah fans?

And don't ya just love how who-tah fans can reel off biased lists of stats that show everything has gone their way and therefore they are the best? Like the classic & mostly meaningless "4 of the last 5 years" stat that includes the 3 years Crowton drove BYU into the ground? Last time I checked, the series is who-tah 4 wins, BYU 3 wins since 2000 and who-tah 9 wins, BYU 8 wins since 1990. Looks pretty even to me even with Crowton's 3 toilet years. And I know U don't want to hear about 1970-1989.

So sad for all the little yooties that the best MWC team has already been determined this season, and it's BYU and there's nothing they can do about it.

    GO COUGARS!!!

    Nov. 19, 2007 11:58 p.m.

Nice LBUN - you should have thrown in the wish to have a pathetic school song like the pukes. It honestly sounds like something I would hear at the circus.
This game is going to be something else - behind all the hatred, I think all the fans respect the ability of their opponent - pukes for the most part are just too ignorant to admit it. As the week goes on I'm actually less worried about BYU's ability to come out on top.
Congrats to the pukes for claiming victories at LES during the past decade (the absolute worst 10 years in the past 40) - anyway, I'm glad you understand what an accomplishment it was. Mendenhall's era is different than the end of Lavell's and all of Crowton's, the guy knows how to win and build a respectible program.
It will still be a close game (10 point win for BYU, yutes might consider that a blow out but it's actually looked at as a competitive game by Cougar fans). Enjoy your visit to Happy Valley - get your spanking and get back in your car and get the hell out!!!!

Hey, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Indianapolis Colts last year, so they were the best team in the NFL, even though Indy won the Super Bowl. Ute Fans, the Utes have won 2 conference championships in 45 years (ironically both when Urban Meyer was your head coach)---PLEASE STOP RANTING ABOUT BEING THE BEST PROGRAM IN THE CONFERENCE. It is clear to everyone in the MWC, except for Utah fans, that BYU is, to quote Coaches Patterson and Sanford, the "class of the conference."

As for scoring defense, whoots havent played COUGS yet. THE #1 SCORING OFFENSE. Dont bring up the deffense on that one, the cougars have allready played some ranked better than the utes and knocked them off their pegs..

I do admire the fact that your the first to try though. REALLY. None the less, even then, thats a couple within a very large stat sheet stacked against the whoots.

  • Best Footbal Team in Utah
    Nov. 19, 2007 10:42 p.m.

I remember a cartoon that reminds me of the big game and all the BYU posters crowing about their conference championship.

The cartoon showed a New York City streetscape with four pizza parlors.

Above the first pizza place is a sign that says: "Best pizza in New York."

Above the second is a sign that says: "best pizza in the world."

Above the third is a sign that says: "best pizza in the universe!'

Above the fourth is a sign that says: "best pizza on this block."

Saturday's game won't determine who wins the conference championship, just which team is the best in Utah.

    Go Utes!

  • the thing i dont understand...
    Nov. 19, 2007 10:30 p.m.

what i do not understand one bit is how byu fans say that us ute fans dont have any room to talk smack. please correct me if im wrong, but if we are such a pathetic sub-par team, then why have we beaten the cougars 4 of the last 5 years? if we are really that terrible of a program, but won 4 of the last 5 games...then what kind of program does that make BYU?

  • LBUN
    Nov. 19, 2007 10:19 p.m.

    You kids win.

We wish we didn't have MWC wrapped up.
We are envious of your zero points scored at UNLV, Wish their coaches laughed at us.
    Wish we ran scores up.
Wish other coaches would flip our team off.
Wish our former players that were NFL #1 picks were an embarassment.
Wish we didn't have a trophy that said BCS Busters.
Wish we couldn't half fill a 50,000 seat stadium.
    Wish we weren't ranked.
Wish we had a red bird mascot.

Wish we didn't do it all over and over again so effortlessly.

Sorry dudes, what's your secret? How to you Utes continue to fail so miserably and still talk the smack.

The season has been fruitful for BYU and it will be no different this week. Coach Mendenhall will be prayerful in his play selection and will be guided to do those things needed to win this game. There is no easier foe than Utah and the Cougars will slay the beast at home this weekend. Utah doesn't deserve to be on the sacred turf of LES.

Good ____ , you people are boring! You all go on and on about inconsiquential wins, and or losses, for both teams, whether it be this year or the PAST, (WHICH IS TRULLY SAD, YOU'VE ALLWAYS TRIED TO USE THAT AGAINST COUGARS, HHMM FUNNY) when all that matters is this year!

Run your mouths while you can, it wont last long.
For the peter attempting to put up win loss stats from the last 8 years, PLEASE, 32-11-4 in the last 47 years head to head. SEE HOW RIDICULOUS IT SOUNDS TO BE TALKING ABOUT YEARS GONE BY?
If you would like to continue though 22 conference titles to, WHAT 3!! We could go on and on, heismans, doke walker, outlands, to long and numerous to remember without a list in front of me!!!
I WOULD SUGGEST A VISIT TO THE LEGACY HALL!! Of course most utes will be either in bars or at a freinds to drink, WHICH EXPLAINS THE OVERALL IGNORANCE, you cant remember what happens in the now, definitely not the past!!!!!!!

Oh yes, it's because the BYU game is Utah's season again...

So, if Utah goes to all of the loser bowls, and beats loser teams, that makes their stats look better...but... only on paper.

Why don't they get ranked, win the MWC and be known further out than the delivery radius of the Des news or the trib?

Oh, if Harline would have played in 2004 he would have been open.

I hear they are going to open a new building up at the U to house the mythical BCS Buster trophy.

Has anyone ever seen the BCS Buster trophy?
Is the BCS Buster trophy real to anyone in the country that doesn't believe in Red Native American Chicken Hawks?

  • @good game
    Nov. 19, 2007 7:45 p.m.

You are on to something, basically CFB data bases take RAW data and complies it in a crude fashion. You can be much more objective by reviewing the films and determine the number of "check down passes" Rushing yards aginst a zone blitz. Defensive results when in a zone blitz, etc, etc.

    My projectionss results are
BYU 45 (7 trips inside the blue zone)
Utah 17 (4 trips into the red Zone)

    BYU 3-3 on fourth down
    326 yds passing
    136 rushing

Basically, BYU Defense simply shuts down the UTES.
Poppinga:14 plus tackles. 75% chance Gaskins will see lots of snaps. bank on it!!!

Let's take an honest look at this! BYU has no conference loses to Utahs two. The excuse is a Johnson injury the first game. No excuses for BYUs injuries. BYU won last year, but the excuse is luck. The utes were lucky in their comeback to even make it close. Win or lose, BYU is still conference champions. No amount of ute reasoning, whining, or excuses is going to change that fact. Now we await excuses for the ute basketball losses which are sure to come.

  • The REAL University of Utah
    Nov. 19, 2007 7:08 p.m.

We all know which institution is the REAL University of Utah. Heck, half of the students at the U are BYU fans!

I know it hurts, little brother, but if you ask ANYONE around the country who the football power was, is, and will always be in the State of Utah, 99% will answer BYU. The other 1% picks Snow College! You don't believe me? try it.

You want to know the difference between the two programs? BYU's goal is always to win a conference championship - first and foremost. The Yewts continue to nip at big brother's heels hoping to get noticed. But Yewts still have an INFERIORITY COMPLEX based on the numerous beatings you have suffered over the years, evidenced by that ridiculous countdown clock you have to the BYU game. Your whole existence is based on beating BYU; BYU looks to win championships.

Until you earn some respect (and that is NOT by kicking an onside kick when leading 43-0), you can continue to hide in BYU's shadow. Some habits, particularly when formed over A 35-year period or so, are hard to break!

    Go Cougars!

There is plenty to cheer about when you beat a tough foe. Make no mistake the Utes will be a tough foe. They are playing great ball. If we come with our A game ... we win. If we show up with anything less ... injuries included ... we may be relgated to hearing their rants again.

The only chant I want to hear repeatedly is the chorus sung by the Cougar faithfull ... Rise & Shout the Cougars are on the path to fame and glory ...

BYU was ranked last year and won on your turf and we're ranked this year, yes, in our rebuilding year and we're gonna win at home. Sure a close one, but nonetheless a win.

Utah looks pretty decent right now and BYU just looks better. Great luck to both teams. Continued success to lil bro, Utah. Big brother will continue to show up and lead the way. Nothing's wrong with runner up, you're used to it--and we support it. Thats what big bros are for.

  • You know who is really good!
    Nov. 19, 2007 6:40 p.m.

    Tulane, Marshall, Louisville

Wow, conference USA is so good...Aren't these the BCS POWERHOUSES that BYU lost to in bowl games since the MWC has started?

Since the MWC has started Utah bowl games against BCS teams are?

    USC- Carson Palmer's USC(held to 6 points) PAC-10
    #19 Pitt- Big EAST
    #21 Georgia Tech Calvin Johnson's team(held to 19 yards)-ACC

One difference between Utah and BYU is Utah can take care of business in bowl games against non-BCS teams: Fresno State, Southern Miss, Tulsa

Keep telling Utah fans how your going to crack the BCS next when you lose 7 Defensive starters, and only return 4 on D.

Meanwhile after Utah finishes 10-3 this year and returns 17/22 starters they will be the real BSC busters, part II!!!!!!!!!!

It will be BYU 28 Utah 24.

Both teams are equal in talent but it will be played in LES so BYU will FINALLY take advantage of the home field and win. I have watched MANY of these games since the days of McMahon, Wilson, Young, etc. Usually I get a feel for the talent level being in the favor of one team or another, but this year there's no difference.

Utah finally stopped the Jeckyl and Hyde routine this year and now they are playing sound football. I will however go with the boys in BLUE because they will reach down and get it done. This is all based on no big mistakes from either team. If there are big mistakes, then the game belongs to the team that capitalizes on them.

But how many has Utah won=3

Now ask yourself couggies what is your bowl record since the MWC has began? 1-4

Now ask yourself cougar fans what is your record against Utah since the MWC? losing.

Utah can still have a piece of the title but that is TBA, but lets talk about BYUs awesome dominance in the MWC.

    To DATE:Since '99

    Utah:
    3 MWC titles

    Bowl wins 6

    #21 Georgia Tech ('05)
    Utah vs the BCS:

    Big East-2

    BYU:

Why do you keep talking about the MWC? BYU has a horrible resume since the conference has started!!!!

    Nov. 19, 2007 4:15 p.m.

The Cougs have not faced a D like this, the utes have faced one good offense and got lit up by Louisville (but won). Yes we need trick plays, Not sure why Johnson can't hit the long ball, he will fumble when blitzed and hit, just throw it away or short! Hall won't do that and his INT's will outnumber his TD's on Saturday unless they run the ball a LOT, Memo to both teams: don't make big mistakes or take big risks score 28 points and let the D do the rest.

  • Remember
    Nov. 19, 2007 4:11 p.m.

Please keep in mind...there is a Las Vegas Bowl and a Poinsettia Bowl berth on the line, most of the country will not be able to watch, and you will be lucky if Sportscenter acknowledges that the game occurred. BYU AND Utah fans live in the past because neither team makes it onto the national scene regularly, thus you talk about BYU's final ranking last year, and Utah's Fiesta Bowl run. The past has no relevance NOW.

Both fan bases think they would be perfect for the PAC-10. Do you have any idea what life would be like as a PAC-10 team? Do you really think you could hang with USC and Pete Carrol year in and year out? Do you really think you could compete for a conference championship when you are playing USC, UCLA, Oregon, ASU, Cal year in and year out? BYU and Utah are both 1-1 against the middle of the PAC-10.

Wake up, Utah and BYU fans! You live in a dream world thinking the rest of the nation cares about either of your teams. Have fun bantering back and forth, but please do so with a sense of reality.

This has to be the worst post on this thread. Even worse than the one claiming BYU was dominated by Arizona!

Utah has a more balanced attack?! Take your red shades off dude. BYU has the most balanced offense in the conference by far. Collie, Allen, Pitta, Unga and Tonga have all been big play makers this season. Have you seen some of the catches those four, and others, have been making? BYU has to run the ball because Hall cant be trusted to throw the ball? Did you know he is 8th in the nation in passing averaging 312 yards per game?! What is Brian Johnson? Lets see, that would be 84th with 164 yards! LOL! Hilarious! Watch some football before you post that kind of nonsense.

  • I'm so confused?!?
    Nov. 19, 2007 3:30 p.m.

How much do you take past history into consideration? How much does winning 6 of 7 at LES play into Utah's chances? Does it make any difference that B Johnson has never played in Provo? Does Mendenhall's success last year give him/team any additional confidence? Do any of the numbers people keep talking about have any bearing on the outcome? Its all so confusing!!!!

Line of scrimmage will determine who wins. BYU's O line has under-achieved all year. They've played as an average group, not the dominant line everyone anticipated. The U's defense has been sensational against the run while only a little above average against the pass. I think Unga goes for only 50-60 yards. If BYU wins, it will be because of Hall's ability to escape and make the big play. If Utah wins, it will be because Mack gets 100+ yards and B Johnson has a clean game (no ints).

Hall also cannot turn the ball over, because Utah WILL convert them into points! D Richards and Godfrey could have a big game. Look for Sakoda to possibly be the difference-maker. No special team help for the Cougs.

I would take coach whit over bronco any day. To see what he did with this team at the beginning of the season losing so many key players, rallying his team to fight back and win 7 games in a row. Someday bronco will be faced with the same adversity and we'll then see how he is able to coach. I have no problem with bronco as a coach, he is obviously a great one, I'm just very impressed with coach Whit and what he has done with this team. For the record, had Utah not gone through the injury bug at the beginning of the season, we would have won at least one or two of the three games we lost, no question! And be ranked higher than BYU.

  • Anonymous
    Nov. 19, 2007 3:01 p.m.

The only way BYU can win is to shut down Darrell Mack, Marquis wilson, Derek Richards, Jeremy Brooks, and Brian Johnson. It seems like both sides have weapons. The only difference is Utah has a more balanced attack. They don't have to completely go one dimensional like the cougars have had to do at times to win. It is sad when you have to run because you can't trust your quarterback to throw it consistently.

  • James
    Nov. 19, 2007 3:00 p.m.

I love the stats that show up!

Between the lines, regardless of which team you root for, both teams are pretty good. And just a few plays (minus UNLV for Utah) in both being ranked much higher.

Wouldn't it be great to have BYU and Utah jump to the newly formed PAC 12? I know, all the PAC 10 lovers are laughing, and they should. If these two teams ever got into the PAC it would take about 4 years of increased recruiting, revenue and exposure from TV and both BYU and Utah would OWN that conference! Flat out OWN it, like some cheap shoes from the D.I.

Right now, on any given day both BYU and Utah can compete and beat any team in the PAC 10. The only let down for both BYU and Utah is depth, but coaching, discipline, etc help them compete.

I think the big difference in numbers between BYU and Utah is that Mendenhall trys to go easy on opponents. Utah showed they will go for the throat by doing that onside kick, and trick plays. Mendenhall would have slowed down midway through the 2nd quarter and let the Pokes back in.

    GO BYU!!!!

You have to laugh at a majority of these yewt postings on the board. They wanna throw out all these stats to make themselves feel better. The funniest one to me is the rivalry record. If you crunch the numbers it is obvious they are skewed by a large string of victories in the early 1900's - 1950's. Long before Lavell revolutionized the game with a vertical passing attack. If you look at the games played over the past 40 years (modern football era), you will see BYU owns the series (26-14) with a large chunk of yewt victories coming in BYU's transition years. For those yewt math majors, that is a 65% winning pct, compared to a (yep you guessed it) 35% winning pct for the yewts over the past 40 years. For info, for those who want to see the yewts go down in Provo, it is nationally broadcast on Versus/CSTV. BYU 28 - Yewts 17. PS At least the yewts can brag about Alex Smith, right? Maybe he should hang out a little more with ex-niner greats, like BYU alum and NFL Hall of Famer, Steve Young...

    Nov. 19, 2007 2:37 p.m.

Ute fans let's get something straight you can't continually ride BYU fans for living in the past and then do so yourselves. We constantly hear how the Utes have beaten BYU 6-7 years at LES. The fact is that will not play any role in this game it's a new year with new teams. And let's not forget the 34-31 scores, when we we not get a post from a Ute fan that doesn't bring that up.

Here's the fact this year and last the most recent. BYU has 2 conference championships, and your hoping by some miracle you can share one this year, but it won't happen. We've won 14 straight conference games and 11 straight home games. So you can say all you want how much better the Ute program is but that just isn't the case. Even if you figure out how to beat BYU saturday, we will still win the conference championship and will still be considered the best team once again in the MWC. Boy it's sure a shame we got our second choice for coach! Will you please keep the first choice!

    Nov. 19, 2007 2:35 p.m.

You and I both know that statistics and previous records don't mean a thing this week. It's whoever has the most heart and whoever makes the most plays. Unfortunately for BYU, history will tell us that during this rivalry week, Utah has had the upper hand.

Aside from that, I haven't seen a Ute defense like this since 2004. And I know that BYU hasn't faced a defense like this all year. Both teams have stellar offenses. The X factor for both teams will be QB play. Will BJohnson be able to be crisp in his throws and play better than he did last week? Will MHall be able to do the same and not aggravate his already slightly separated shoulder? This will be the first rivalry game for both QB's as a starter. Who will withstand the pressure better?

BYU may have the better record and will most likely win outright in the conference. But this game will answer the question of who has the better team currently.

I think Coach Whit, Anderson, and Ludwig will prepare and get the job done in Provo. Low scoring, 17 14 Utah.

I really think this is funny.. wow, i could read these comments all day.. Personally, it seems like there are more "byu haters" than ute fans. Its like they could care less about how utah does as long as byu loses. well here is what i think... the only way utah can win is by shutting down unga, tonga, pitta, and collie. week in and week out those four have proven to be the playmakers. Plus, BYU's O-line is massive. They shouldnt have a problem with utah's pass rush. This is going to be max hall's first holy war game so i wouldnt be suprised to see him make a few mistakes. all young QB's do. but in every sport and in every game, it will come down to the team who can make more plays on both sides of the ball. I like BYU in this one.. look for a nail biter like last year- 31-33 BYU!!!

  • re: cougar blue
    Nov. 19, 2007 2:29 p.m.

anything cougar blue says should be discounted. He obviously didn't watch or pay attention to the games he is talking about. Utah absolutely dominated TCU defensively and did enough on the Offensive side of things to win. The Defense also played well against New Mexico and caused half of their fumbles with the final one making the game out of reach. Sure, the offense struggled at times, but they also were able to do enough to win. Both BYU and Utah are playing well and it should be a good game.

BYU isn't any better than Utah is at this point in time. They are pretty evenly matched as so many posters from both sides have pointed out.

Both Red and Blue (tad more Blue this week). May the best team win. Great game. Wish I could watch it. (Won't comment on the MTN)

Let's all enjoy and not be so childish. Both great schools and both great programs. Let's be happy who ever wins. Talk is cheap. Winners win.

Sure wish we could watch this game on TV. Don't have the Mtn. Comcast isn't available, so I guess I'll listen to it on my computer--again--as it is the only place I can get KSL Radio where we live. Better than nothing!! I have 3 BYU students in my family, and we are die hard Cougar fans. But this is always a good game. I'll be SO GLAD when this dumb TV contract has expired!! I hope the powers that be will negotiate something better next time.

Forget your rash of numbers associated with bygone coaches that recently passed through town. Bronco has announced that he intends to re establish linkage with BYU's past WINNING tradition as established under the legandary coach Edwards. Seems to me some of the UTE staff may have been part of that winning tradition, and maybe, just maybe, those memebers of the Ute staff brought that winning tradition along with them to SLC. Infact, Byu and Utah might consider SEEDING the coaching staff at CSU, UNLV, Wyoming and SDSU so we can all "move up in the rankings."

Utes by 2 touchdowns..at least. We have a better quarterback, better overall defense (5th in the nation scoring defense, 4th in nation for pass efficiency defense, 9th in nation for sacks, 8th in nation for pass defense, and 14th in nation for tackles for loses). You haven't seen Johnson play to his capability because our defense and special teams and Mack have done it for us. So brag all you want about Hall because we want him to throw, trust me. I'm glad the cougs made top 25, it just means another top 25 win to make the utes look better......and the Y fans are sooooo annoying. This is a no-brainer....go Utes!

    Nov. 19, 2007 2:08 p.m.

I keep hearing the same old garbage that Utah performed better than BYU did against common opponents. That's only because Kyle loves to pile it on (some kind of inferiority complex). The yewts are doing onside kicks and trick plays when they're already up big. Bronco calls off the dogs at halftime or when they get up by 3 scores.

The bottom line is BYU 6-0; Yewts 5-2 in MWC. That's comparison enough. Like always, this will be the yewts bowl game and so they will bring everything they've got. Will it be enough? Don't think so. BYU by 10.

  • 3rd Gen Cougar Fan
    Nov. 19, 2007 2:09 p.m.

Why are Ute fans like BYU Better? claiming such defensive superiority? When you look at the actual numbers (they don't lie) both teams are very comparable defensively.

    Total Defense (yards/game):
    BYU - 308.6 (14th nationally)
    Utah - 309.9 (16th)

    Points allowed:
    BYU - 18.8 (19th)
    Utah - 15.5 (5th)

    Total Offense (yards/game):
    BYU - 452.9 (19th)
    Utah - 373.6 (72nd)

    Points per game:
    BYU - 30.9
    Utah - 26.9

BYU has the clear advantage offensively, but Utah has the advantage in special teams and a far superior kicker. That is what the outcome of this game will hinge on. If Utah can hold BYU to 21 points or less than they have the advantage with field goals and I would call it 20 - 17 Utah. But if BYU has the same kind of offensive performance they had against Wyoming (in Laramie), whose defense leading into the game was still ranked 13th nationally and 1st in the conference even after the Utah fiasco, then I am going to call it 28-20 BYU.

Either way this game is shaping up to be one for the ages!! GO COUGARS!!!

I say the team with the better school song will win! BYU hands down, even "Rise and Shout" was written by a Salt Laker.

My mom went to Utah about 50 years ago, back in the day when the fans made the OOOOHHHH with the rapid hand over and away from their mouths as they were the Runnin' Redskins. And the song went something like..."I am a man from Utah and I live across the sea, our coeds are the fairest that you will ever see....Kaiai! I laugh just thinking about it.

It's absolutley amazing to me how stupid Ute fans really are, listening to their logic is like listening to a 3 year old trying to make sense of something. If you look at the same opponents BYU definitly has the edge. Air Force wasn't even close, nor Unlv both losses for the powerful Utes. BYU controled the TCU game, Utah didn't TCU beat themselves, like New Mexico, If it weren't for a couple of very costly fumbles at bad times New Mexico wins that game, Utah didn't do much. BYU'S victory over Wyoming is just as impressive over Wyoming, everyone know Wyoming is 10 times the team in Laramie, they can't do anything on the road. So brag all you want but the best team in the conference is BYU who will win the MWC outright regardless of the outcome on saturday. The only reason Utah has a chance because they get more up for this game than any, and it's more important for you to beat BYU than any other game, in fact you would consider it a successful season if it were the only game you won. Utah's defense is good but the offense is bad. BYU wins

    Nov. 19, 2007 1:48 p.m.

Both teams enter with 7 game winning streaks. I think they are well matched and should be a great game to watch if it is on a station carried by Directv.

Too bad nothing is on the line. With the rewards being a bowl game vs Navy in San Diego or a bowl game vs Ball state, or a 6-6 pac 10 or big 10 team who cares. Too bad it isn't like the Hawaii Boise State game this year where the winner has a chance of sneaking into a BCS game.

I love college football but the bowl situation is a huge downer. Bring in a playoff system!

Quite entertaining to read through all of these posts. Doesn't matter which team you're rooting for, and it doesn't matter what either team has done up to this point. It never has. BYU could have the worst record and Utah the best, or visa versa. Either team is more than capable of beating the other.

Due to how intense this rivalry is, the team that will come out on top is the team that wants it the most and is willing the pay the price to get it!

  • This season
    Nov. 19, 2007 1:34 p.m.

    Here are this years stats
    Record BYU 8-2 6-0 Utah 8-3 5-2
Margin of victory BYU 12 Utah 11
Total Offense BYU 453 Utah 374
Total Defense BYU 309 Utah 310

Additionally BYU has advantage in Time of Possession, 3rd & 4th down conversions, First Downs, First Downs allowed.
Utah has advantages in Turnover Margin, Penalties, Offensive and Defensive red zone percentage.

BYU has advantage offensively in Yards and Points, Utah has the advantage on Special teams, Turnovers and Penalties. Defenses are about even.

Should be a great game that could go either way. Both teams are on wining streaks and are playing good football.
    Pick BYU 30 Utah 24

Should be a good, hard-fought game. For all those Y fans that think the Y has a much better team - let's look at MIT grad Jeff Sagarin's ratings. Y is ranked 26 with the U ranked 28. U has a slightly better strength of schedule and a better Predictor score (described as the "single best predictor of future games.")
So much for objectivity, at least in this fan's eyes, with BJ healthy, Utah is the better team. If he starts connecting on long balls, the U will be virtually unstoppable on offense.
Also, I love Y fans pretending that Utah takes the game more seriously. C'mon this is the rivalry game, any fan, coach, or player who pretends this doesn't matter is fooling no one.
Here's hoping to another classic with no injuries to either side.

    Nov. 19, 2007 12:54 p.m.

I just went back to the 1997 season and included games played up to last Saturday. Below are the stats (from the MWC website):

Total Wins: Utah (84) BYU (80)
    Total Win %: Utah (66%) BYU (60%)
Conference Wins: Utah (55) BYU (55)
Bowl Appearances Utah (6) BYU (5)
Bowl Wins: Utah (6) BYU (1)
Rivalry Game Wins: Utah (6) BYU (4)

Take from the above what you will. I am fine with BYU fans routing for their team, I am fine with last year and the win over Utah, but seriously, it is time to stop living in the 70s and 80s. You dont have a better football program than the University of Utah. Maybe in the 80s, but not anymore. Nobody knows BYU, your kidding yourself if you think otherwise. Nobody fears BYU, youre just another school on peoples schedule.

It might be time to live in the now, and the facts of the now are that for the last 10 years BYU is behind Utah.

Yesterday's paper said the Utes have a countdown in their locker room so don't believe the talk that they don't count this as any game.

The difference in this game will always be the class of the coach and how they react. Bronco has shown far more class than Whittingham, and I was orginally in favor of the Y getting him.

Going to be a good game as they have been for the last 10 years. Hope no injuries occur. Based on my experience over a lifetime dealing with the Utes I think they will go after Hall and hit him as hard as they can to give serious injury to his shoulder. That is how they feel they can beat you by injuring opposing players then they sit back and brag how good they are.

I don't see anything on TV or in the newspapers regarding anything having to do with the MWC here in Virginia. Its as if BYU and Utah have fallen off the face of the earth. I did catch Air Force on the tube against ND and if that's the caliber of play coming from the MWC, then wow! (even as bad as ND is this year). That TV deal you guys (MWC) signed is a disaster, really!
I've read and heard many BYU games over the Internet and caught two Utah games while I was traveling in Utah. I gotta say, as painful as it may be, the Utes look like one of the hottest teams in the country right now. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd best team west of the Mississippi. I think they'd dispatch Oregon or USC at Rice-Eccles with some ease. (I mean, who could conceivably beat them on their home field right now???)
I hope the Cougs bring their AA game Saturday, cause thats what will be required to slow down that runaway freight train from SLC.
Come on Cougs!!! Show some pride and stop that team up North! You can do it!

BYU has earned the right to play for a championship. Utah has not. You don't start the season 0-2 in conference and get shut out 27-0 by UNLV and deserve the right to play for a championship. That said, Utah has shown a tremendous amount of character by battling back from a lot of early adversity. The ability to overcome adversity and the mental toughness it has forged will be the difference on Saturday. BYU, to its own credit, has coasted in conference for a couple of years. Bronco believes this game is like any other. That is why he is about to drop to 1-2 in the rivalry game, despite taking the favorite into the game all three years. Whitt knows what the rivalry game is about. Bronco, to this point, has been a better head coach, but that is changing. Whittingham, however, always has been a better defensive coach and mind than Bronco. How many times has Whitt giving up 30-40 + points? Even with an inconsistent offense through the years, Whitt has put together some defensive gems. Whitt and Gary will out scheme the cougs, confuse, rattle, and abuse Hall. Utes by 7.

  • Get Real
    Nov. 19, 2007 12:34 p.m.

Utah ownes BYU in Provo. Six of the last 7 games in Provo have gone Utah's way. BYU simply gets too over hyped when playing Utah at home and Utah always comes in with nothing to lose. The problem this year is that Utah truly does have an outstanding team , especially defensively, and they can hit the big, deep pass as good as BYU can so although my heart wants BYU my head says its Utah winning 35-28. BYU will go on to destroy SDSU and win the out right conference title but the enjoyment will be tempered because of the Utah loss. Unfortunately, the end to the 2007 season for BYU is very easy to predict. Utah will win its bowl game and finish the season 10-3 and BYU will finish with an identical record after winning its bowl game. The season, however will be a downer because of the Utah loss no matter how you slice it.

I love this smack. Let's see Utah play a decent team in a bowl game before you run smack.

    Through 2005:
Average Victories for BYU Bowl Opponents: 8.45
    Utah Bowl Opp: 7.67
Average Losses for BYU Opp: 3.14
Average Losses for Utah Opp: 4.56
Average Ranking for BYU Bowl Opp: 22
Average Ranking for Utah Bowl Opp: 35

Yes, Utah has been stellar in their bowl games, beating:
    7-5 Georgia Tech
    8-4 Pittsburgh
    9-4 So Miss
    6-6 USC
    7-5 Fresno State
    8-5 Wisconsin (LOSS)

The Cougars already know that they have a piece of the title. The Utes on the other hand need this game to even share it with the cougars. I've said it once and I'll say it again, when the rivalry game comes up everything goes out the window. All the numbers all the smack talking, both teams are extremely hot right now and it will be an excellent game. The more consistent team will come out on top, not the one that shows unsportsmanlike conduct by trying to rub it in. I pick the Cougars by 7! They're not the same team that we've have seen the last couple of years, and this is Utah's last and only actual real test of the season.

Help me understand ... you are saying BYU's passing attack is not serious? (NOTE: they are ranked 8th at 315.2 yards per game) And you are implying that Utah is a good passing team? (NOTE: Utah is ranked 77th at 205.5 yards per game).

I understand that this rivalry brings out the emotion but please, your arguments should at least "reflect" reality. In case you were wondering, BYU's offense is ranked 19th in total yards per game and 41st in points per game. Utah is ranked 73rd in yards per game and 65th in points per game.

UTAH has won 6 of 7 in their home away from home.

  • Utes will need a pass attack
    Nov. 19, 2007 12:05 p.m.

The utes have given BYU problems the last couple of years by getting a ton of yards via the pass game. 376 through the air to only 98 on the ground in 2006. This year is no different! In order for Utah to pull it off, they will have to do it through the air again. The run game will not get it done! Here are some reasons...

BYU is 10th nationally in rushing defense

Utah is decently at 41st in rush offense (and have won most of their games that way) but is dismal at pass offense (77th nationally).

The queston is, can Utah pass for enough yards to get the win? Well, neither quaterback has been able to pass for 376 yet in any game, the closest Brian Johnson got was 322 yds against a horrible Louisville defense (88th nationally in pass defense) and has not done it since. In fact, that was the only game either Utah QB passed for more than 300! If the utes can get it done through the air i believe it will be close, if not then BYU will control this game.

  • Re: Re: BYU'97
    Nov. 19, 2007 12:03 p.m.

As typical, the yewts only look at the stats that make them look good. Let's look at all of them:

    offense:
    Passing Yards per Game
    BYU - 315.2
    Utah - 205.5

    Rushing Yards per Game
    BYU - 137.7
    Utah - 168.1

    Total Points per Game
    BYU - 30.9
    Utah - 26.9

    Defense
    Rush Yards Allowed
    BYU - 92.2
    Utah - 129.5

    Passing Yards Allowed
    BYU - 216.4
    Utah - 180.7

    Points Allowed per Game
    BYU - 18.8
    Utah - 15.5

What all of this tells you is really only one thing - both teams are very closely matched and that the game could go either way. Really neither team is significantly better than the other, and the team that commits the fewest mistakes (ie penalties) will probably be the victor.

Yewt fans that run dribble claiming they're the superior team really do not have the stats to back it up. Both are good teams in a really crappy conference, so how much smack can either really run? Bottom line is, the better teams in the WAC probably could beat either BYU or Utah.

  • Too Bad
    Nov. 19, 2007 12:02 p.m.

It is really a shame that the Utes had two bad games early in the year that cost them relavence in the MWC championship. At least BYU's bad games were against teams that had no impact on their conference championship. It is really fun to see both teams on huge winning streaks. I think both teams are so evenly matched that you need ot look at leadership. While Hall has been almost A Smith like in his sophomore year I think the edge goes to Johnson. Then on the defensive side I hate to say it but I think BYU's leadership with Keihl is ahead of Utes. Should be a great game. BTW as a Utes fan I have to give Keihl props for showing up to Utah stadium on his off week to watch our game. That was funny and awesome.

  • VIVA COUGARS
    Nov. 19, 2007 11:57 a.m.

Its exciting that both are streaking right now, however which Ute team will show? The same consistent COUGARS will be there.

Both teams are good, BYU is just better. It'll be close. Utah needs gimmicks, BYU doesn't. Mack vs Unga? not a question, Unga does the same job with 1/2 the carries, as a sophmore. QBs - Hall's minorly injured shoulder vs Johnson's? Hall is progressively getting better and Johnson can't throw long with a healthy arm. Gimmick-wise, it'll probably be an RB throwing long for the Utes anyway. OK, Utes have a superior special teams. I wish Payne could deliver the hurt like his bro...OUCH.

Urban is history, give it up. Fully invested? If it works it works. If it was OSU's and it worked it'd still be fine to use. Urban brought ideas (i.e. clocks, TDS, etc) from other schools. He didn't coin nor patent anything.

Looking forward to an intense game.

Anyone in Mesa/Gilbert/Queen Creek able to watch the game? I wish I could watch. :)

For all those utes touting that Utah's scoring defense is 5th in the nation, I have two things to say:

    1. BYU's defense is not far behind at all.

    2. Utah's defense hasn't faced an offense as good as BYU's. Their numbers (Utah's) will drop after this weekend.

    Nov. 19, 2007 11:40 a.m.

First of all, I am a BYU fan. Yes, there are stupid fans for both teams. Some of your comments are just dumb. Before I get to my main point, I want to point out a few things. BYU did not squeak by Arizona, they won 20-7 and dominated the entire game. BYU has outscored conference opponents this year by a larger point spread than Utah has. Even if you include SDSU, which BYU has not yet played, BYU has outscored the conference by 91 points, whereas Utah has outscored its opponents by 80 points.

As far as the history of the rivalry goes, Utah dominated the early years (who cares), BYU went 19-2 from 1972 to 1992 (only slightly more relevant), and over the past 17 years BYU has won 8 and Utah 9. Utah has played better the last few years, but thats mainly due to BYU getting over the disastrous Crowton years and Utah being at their absolute pinnacle under the Urban era. Both teams have returned back to normal since

  • BYU BETTER?
    Nov. 19, 2007 11:39 a.m.

byu better hope for a win because they only have 4 returing starters on their Defense next year, and we are talking about the D that MADE Paul Smith look like the best player EVER in NCAA football.

Utah is currently ranked #5 in the country on defense and they have 7 returning starters on their top 5 defense.

Not to mention that Utah will return 8 offensive players next year!

As before, byu better hope for a win, which they will not get, because next year they will truly have a horrible D.

And Utah will Dominate as always!

Here are some of my favorite Yewtah lines:
"We've beaten teams by a larger margin than BYU (except the games where we didn't win...)
"We beat an ailing UCLA at our own stadium (whereas BYU barely lost to a healthy one on the road! and don't forget Kehl's interception for a TD)
"We beat Louisville! (with a losing record)
"We beat Wyoming 50-0! (at home, whereas Cougs beat them away, something Yewts couldn't do last year).
"We've beaten you 5 of last 6! (Y's beat Yew about 20 of the last 30 and we own the streak!)
"We've got a guy who can sometimes run and a guy who can catch (We have three of each who are you going to defend?)
Predicted Score: BYU 38 Yewtah 20

Hope the Yutes keep on reviewing the Tulsa film. Cougars are a differt team in a differnt time with a different attitude. Hopefully Utah can say the same since UNLV waxed them. Now for the Now, It will be a good game, lots of hitting and yardage, at first. But the OVERALL quality and DEPTH of the BYU program will overwhelm the boys in red. Yeah, there are a few "chinks in the BYU armor" Bronco knows where they are and they'll addressed by game time. Too many weapons on offense, and a defense that's second to NONE. Go ahead a play you stat game and claim the UTE Defense is first in the MWC. The cougars have given up over 350 yds. in the mercy prevent defense and never tied an onside kick!

It is great that both teams are on winning streaks! Coach Wittingham will have the Utah Men ready and Coach Mendenhall will have the Cougars primed. Be ready for a slugfest with Utah throwing against a depleted BYU secondary and BYU running the ball with all three Tongans. I want BYU to win just to shut up the obnoxious Utah fans, not all of them, just the ones that are rude, crude and mean spirited. This should be a great game regardless of who ultimately wins. Go Cougars!

Why don't you go and look at the national averages efore you write incorrect info. Ask any player or coach and they will say that the only stat that counts is the score.

    UTAH 15.5 points a game= 5th in the country
BYU 18.8 points per gama= 19th in the country

Not to mention Utah has only given up 1 TD in the last 14 Q's, and it came off an int to the 11 to set up NM 1 TD!!!!!!!!

Lets face it. Neither byu or utah will win this game by more than a touchdown. If you think otherwise, your an idiot. And you shouldn't be allowed to comment about college football. This game can't be predicted. Both teams have proven there good. The winner will simply be whoever comes out with more fire in the belly and flat out executes with minimal mistakes such as few penalties etc. And perhaps a little luck. This is the year of "chaos college football." Its going to be a good one in provo this saturday. May the best team win.

  • BYU '97
    Nov. 19, 2007 11:18 a.m.

Utah has a good team, no doubt. But to those utes asking "who has BYU played", you've got to be kidding. You're in the same conference, so the answer is "seven of the same teams that you've played." Non-conference, BYU played UCLA, Arizona, Tulsa and Eastern Washington. Utah played UCLA, Louisville, Utah State and Oregon State. Those are very comparable schedules. Against the same seven teams, BYU scored more, but Utah held the opponents to less.

Here's the difference between BYU and Utah. BYU is very consistent, always scoring between 24-35 points. Utah, however, has gone anywhere from 0-50 points. You just don't know what you're going to get from them. I think that directly reflects the coaching.

This is a big game, and no doubt that Whittingham will have Utah "up" for this game. I'm curious to see what tricks he brings out. Coach Mendenhall, will have BYU ready as well. Just don't expect them to be nearly as emotional.

    Should be a close game.

  • After this Week
    Nov. 19, 2007 11:15 a.m.

After Utah wins this weekend it will prove that Utah is the best team in the conference and that byu was only the healthiest team in the conference.

  • This means nothing
    Nov. 19, 2007 11:06 a.m.

All this trash talk means nothing. The game is the only meaningful thing. The game will hinge on Max Hall's shoulder injury, turnovers, and officiating. Both teams will be ready to play. Right now BYU can only control turnovers, Hall's condition is out of our hands and the officiating usually goes against us. We need some real luck to have Hall heal quickly. Otherwise, we will lose.

  • Questions?
    Nov. 19, 2007 11:04 a.m.

I know byu lovers do not give any respect to Utah, but I have a question for you: If Utah has ONLY GIVEIN UP 1 TD in the last 14 Q's, where is byu going to get their points from? Utah has the 5th ranked D in the country with respect to points given up, at 15.5!

I am not saying that byu will be shut out like 2003 but stop predicting that byu will be scoring 35+ points on Utah. Utah has the best secondary in the conferecne coupled with Hall's sore shoulder. As for your trio of RBs, Utah held your RBs last to 54 yards of 24 carries including on 6 yards for Fui on 5 carries, and 2 yards for Tonga....only 45 for Brown(who is a better RB than Unga!)

Ps even with a Utah win byu will go the Vegas bowl and play Indiana, not a Pac-10 team. The Pac-10 will not have enough bowl eliglibe teams after both Oregon and USC go to the BCS games.

Although it would be great if byu would play Cal because we all know what happened to byu two years ago!

    Nov. 19, 2007 11:01 a.m.

Have you seriously watched any BYU football this year? Or, have you seriously watched any yewt games? Your comment about BYU's offense based on the run and Utah's is based on passing is about as dumb a comment as one can make. Take a look at stats before making such a ridiculous comment.

BYU's stats - average rushing yards per game - 137.7; and, average passing yards per game - 315.2. Yewts stats - average rushing yards per game - 168.1; and, average passing yards per game - 205.5.

Looks like your logic is flawed, which seems about right for a yewt.

No need for logic when you tally up the votes. The teams probably really don't need to play at all since it's pretty much already decided who will win.

I would give the edge to BYU in this game. Sorry utes. All you've got going for you is ugly uniforms and emotion. That'll only carry you so far.

Let's be serious. If the "U" were really the DOMINANT Team in Utah, then why aren't they always winning the MWC? Just because you beat BYU after they wrap up the title doesn't mean squat. We are in the top 25, and YOU are not. We have a coach to be proud of who teaches our men about life and class. The Ute's take after their chosen name sake in the "Savage" form. I admit Utah has a chance to win this year once again, but will they do it on trickery or will they do it because they are the better team? That is what is to be determined on Saturday in Provo.

Oh, Utah fans don't have big mouths either!? Please! I was at the BYU/Utah game last year and I was surrounded by a bunch of big mouth, sorry loosing, classless yewt fans.

I also am very surprised that BYU fans are picking the Y to win by two touchdowns. HELLO!! This is one of the hottest rivalries in the nation. No matter what the two teams have done during the season this game is completely up in the air for either team to win.

I watched the NM/Utah game, and I wasn't that impressed with Utah. Sure they had their moments of good quality football but they weren't consistent. BYU on the other hand, have been consistent in every game ever since the Tulsa fiasco. I just don't see how Utah's defense can contain all of BYU's offensive weapons. I look for Brian Johnson to have a big game, especially since BYUs secondary is a little weak now, but with BYU's linebackers and d-line, look to see very little Utah rushing yards, and a lot of sacks.

    Nov. 19, 2007 10:35 a.m.

I shouldn't read these things because I can't help but reply. A couple corrections: 1. to In Response: BYU beat Arizona, 2. to nyron: I think he meant win out the entire schedule, not just the conference (I made that mistake at first too).

Anyway, when comparing common opponents, why do Ute backers keep saying things like "minus AFA and UNLV," or "except for Air Force and UNLV," when those are two games that each team played? By your same logic, we BYU fans could say, "excpet for UCLA...."

Also, anyone who thinks either team would win by 50 is completely dillusional. This will probably be decided by 10 points or less. Here's hoping the Cougs pull it off. I won't be able to watch though as I'll be out of town for it (dang you MTN).

    Eric,

Did you seriously watch any BYU football this year? I did and I am a red-blooded UTE!!! They do not have a serious pass attack; your game is based on running...which worries me bc we had a tough time tackling that big UNLV back; however, BYU cannot defend a good passing team (you really have not seen another since Tulsa) and therefore I think it will be a complete shootout with BYU running and Utah passing. Special teams the difference...Utah wins (again)!!

I believe the overall record in the rivalry is somewhere along the lines of 45-21 in favor of Utah. BYU may have won it a thousand years ago and won it last year, but UTAH wins it every year in between.

  • Amazing....
    Nov. 19, 2007 10:06 a.m.

All BYU fans talked about this year was how they don't care about beating Utah, it's just another game, and that is all the Utes care about, beating BYU. Well, upon casual skimming if the comments the past two days, the trash talkers have overwhelmingly been BYU fans, I mean big time, like 7-1 if I had to guess. Wasn't it you BYU fans talking about all that "quiet confidence?" The team may have it, but definately not the fans.

Then again, what we say here has no bearing or validity to what the team feels...so who cares. We are just a bunch of overzealous fans who use this board to voice our frustrations or hatred for the other team. If BYU or Utah wins, I guarantee none of us here will have anything to do with it. The closest thing will be being at the game and using our voices...but that's it.

Max Hall becomes frustrated with Utah's excellent pass coverage and heavy rush and makes a few too many mistakes, Utah's offense sputters but will muster enough points due to excellent field position created by the defense and special teams. Utah 28, BYU 17

  • I can't find a cork big enough..

Cougar fans have two great things going for them. One, they are great at making excuses when they don't show up to play and they have 5 days to prepare their list of excuses. And second, they have BIG mouths. This should be great for Thanksgiving dinner, but it is doing them no good when they call a win by 20 or 30 points.

I will be looking for a cork big enough to shut them up, but in the mean time most everyone of them is doing a good job putting their foot in their mouth, so I am sure the Utes will take care of the rest.

  • Stupid Yewt Fan Here
    Nov. 19, 2007 10:01 a.m.

Stupid yewt fan here to bring the logical arguments...the yewts clearly are the better team. If you look at the margin of victory over the teams that both Utah and BYU played, you'll see that the yewts margin is much wider; therefore, the yewts are clearly the better team. And, BYU has one victory over a patsy team (E. Washington). Of course, cougar fans will counter that by saying USU is lower than E. Washington, but that argument doesn't carry any weight.

Look at the numbers guys (minus AFA and UNLV), the yewts are so much better and they'll win by at least 50 points. And that's a totally logical statement to make.

The troubles of the early season are gone and they have proven their consistency with a 7 game win streak in which most of the games haven't been very close. I am willing to give you cougars some respect as you deserve it. You should be willing to do the same.

I'm curious to know when the BYU Utah Rivalry has been recognized as a top national rivalry by anyone. Someone mentioned a Wall Street Journal article, but are there others? BYU and Utah fans that think this rivalry is comparable to Michigan Ohio State, or Auburn Alabama are delirious. The Michigan/OSU game on Saturday, despite the deflated expectations this year, received a visit from College Gameday, was nationally televised, had a Big Ten Championship, a Rose Bowl Berth, and possible BCS title game implications on the line. Hardly comparable to this so called "Holy War".

  • Eric's take
    Nov. 19, 2007 9:55 a.m.

Both teams are very solid but I see more advantages for Utah. I dont think there will be a lot of scoring on either side. Both defenses are too good.

Utah has a more diverse offensive attack and will give BYU some fits. The depleted BYU secondary will have a hard time with Utah's talented recievers and poised QB.

The utah defense is #1 in the conference against the pass, #1 in sacks, and #1 in scoring and, obviously the BYU strength is passing so the will have trouble. Utah's secondary is very solid and matches up very well against BYU's recieving threats.

Utah is certainly better on special teams and taking care of the ball and I think that will be the biggest difference.

Further, Utah will not spot BYU 14 points again this year so it won't matter who is open on the last play this time. Utah by 10...Utah 27 BYU 17.

Do you really think Urban Meyer came up with the slogans "fully invested" and "accountability?" Any business school has used those for the last 30 years.

The Utes are having a great season considering their expectations at the beginning of the year. And they might be playing the best football in the conference right now. But Ute fans, don't hang your hopes on having a better defense. That didn't help TCU or Wyoming. Also, realize that your defense isn't any better than ours statistically. Here's to hoping for no major injuries and that fans don't take this rivalry too far.

Typical UTE fan...I would be curious to see how may top 25 rankings BYU has had since the "relevant 80's" and how many the UTE's have had. I would bet BYU doubles them up in that category. Oh...and Urban Meyer dumped your program three years ago.

Keep living your Urban Meyer pipe dream. What does BYU's marketing campaign have to do with the fact that Utah is the second tier team in the state? Your Utes don't mean a thing to most people outside the state of Utah. Somethings are true whether or not you believe them.

No matter who wins or loses, the game means nothing...

There are no BCS bowl bids at stake and therefore no money, the television broadcast is not national and barely even local, and bragging rights are overrated... There is always the national ranking now held by the Cougars, but the MWC has been disrespected all year anyway, so again doesn't really matter.

No matter who wins or loses, the Cougars will go bowling in Vegas and play a mediocre Pac-10 team, and the Utes bowl in San Diego against a spirited but even less than impressive Navy team. Hopefully both MWC teams can play well and win those games!

Call me dumb, but even if I could watch it I wouldn't! I'm going to do something worthwhile rather than watch a bunch of immature fans bad mouth each other while cheering on their two very good football teams.

Byu - bend do not break defense with an offense that churns out yards and points
Utah - very athletic high preasure defense, big play unique offense.
special teams is the only place where there is a huge diparity in talent between the teams. That will be the differance.
    Utah 24 - Byu 21

  • Utah's Defense
    Nov. 19, 2007 9:18 a.m.

Do you people honestly think BYU is going to score that much on Utah's defense? Utah is only giving up 15.5 points per game this year and only 12.4 against the conference. Utah is leading the conference in sacks and has the best secondary in the league. So tell me where these points are coming from? No way Unga, if rodney furguson couldnt do it then unga doesnt have a chance. BYU may get 24 points, maximum. More likely 17. Utah will win because of better defense and far superior special teams.

  • JD

BYU is the superior team..and they should win by 2 tds. But..so were they last year and should have won by 2 tds and just squeaked it out at the end. I'm sure this will be a close game and it wouldn't surprise me to see it come down to the last play again.

Hey AZfan, you're living in the past man. BYU hasn't been nationally relevant since the 80's.

As for the definition of "Little Brother", check out BYU's marketing dept. this year basing their entire radio and TV campaign on their last second win over their arch-rival last year. I guess that helps generate excitement when it is the first win over your rival in 5 years.

I also love BYU's HC mimicking Utah's former HC, Urban Meyer with his overused slogans, "Fully Invested" & "Accountability". I guess I can't blame him for that, Urban was and is a a great coach. Like they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Now tell me, who is the "little brother" again?

I am a 3 generation cougar fan. My grandfather was the QB on the 1897 BYA football team and yes they won the state championship beating Utah and Utah State which at the time is equivalent of winning the conference. The team was undefeated.
As a fan I will be following the game on the radio in Spokane, WA; which is the best I can do given our circumstances.
I beleive that BYU wins by 3 points and it will be a well played close game. As fans lets be extremely polite perfect hosts (like Notre Dame Fans) and then beat the pants off the Utes. Let the game be played on the field.

The Utes always have a tough time stopping big, phyiscal backs (see UNLV)....and BYU has THREE of them. Looking at this objectively, I just don't see how the Utes will be able to stop the three big backs from BYU, and that will open up the passing game, as it has all year long.

To be honest, I don't see this one being a nail-biter as the last two have (just because of the difference in the rushing attack on both sides)---gotta be able to rush to win!

To POLYnation: UCLA win a fluke?? Hard to believe when they were shut out of the endzone completely. "They've played teams that are infererior to the likes of BYU". Hmmm. Interesting. Judging by that "inferiority", BYU must be on the same level as the Utes since they have played mostly the same teams.

Except for the fact that the Utes beat 2 out of 3 non conference opponents and has a better win-on-the-road record. Tue Utes have won 4 games on the road, and the Cougs have won 3.

Hey reminder, do you think we really care? The Wall Street Journal voted this game in the top 5 rivalry games in the country, right behind the likes of Michigan/Ohio St., Auburn/Alabama, UCLA/USC, etc.

Maybe few outside Utah know how great this rivlary is but the WSJ voted it that high because it is year in and year out the most competitive and entertaining rivalry in the country. Trying to put your wet blanket over it doesn't change that. Here is to the Utes making it 5 of the last 6 and 7 of the last 8 in LES (RES South).

Again I will remind all of you Ute Fans in Utah... Your team is completely insignificant outside the state of Utah. Go ahead and live in your little bubble, but the truth is: YOU ARE THE LITTLE BROTHER of college football in the State of Utah. BYU has been and will continually be the class of the MWC and the DOMINANT college football program in the state of Utah...you remind me of the UofA fans here in Arizona. Always trying to compare themselves to the superior program in Tempe(ASU). Sure they squeak out a string of wins every so often, but they will never be a football school. Same as UTAH. Sorry Ute fans, but it is the TRUTH.

I am not sure why people think the Utah win over UCLA was a "fluke". UCLA is .500 win team this year, a mediocre Pac-10 team at best. You would think a team ranked 25th in the BCS would beat a UCLA team this year.

All you Kewger fans that think you are going to win by 2 TD's are are foolish. Utah's D is not going to give up over 20 points to you guys so your offense better show up and you'd better slow down Utah's pass rush or you're not going to have a chance.

I also love to hear Bronco publicly stating that this is just another game for BYU. That is the attitude he has adopted the past two years when BYU was heavily favored in both games. That led to a loss (to a Utah team breaking in a QB that hadn't taken a snap all season) at LES and it took miracle last year (and some help from some questionable PI calls) for BYU's best team in 10 years to pull one out of their hat. If BYU treats this as just another game, they will lose Saturday. Cmon Bronco, its okay to actually show some emotion and personality once in a while. Show the world you're more then just a robot that spews the same cliches over and over again.

I predict the team that score 20+ wins the game. Utes in a close one 20-17.

    Dear Utah,

You try and tackle three 235 lbs polynisian running backs for four quarters! We did and look what happened to us.

    Sincerely,

Wyoming, TCU, CSU, New Mexico, Airforce, UNLV, Arizona.

Austin Collie said it himself, that its the running backs that open things up for the O. Tackling those guys are like tackling a train. They may not break it for big yards every time, but they are going to be constitant for 4-5 yards per carry because they drag guys down the field. All defenders can do is grab hold and hope that someone else helps soon. Defenses get tired from do that all game long. Then they get torched by the recievers. Thus, Utah's D will have their hands full.
Conversley, a scrambling QB give BYU's D fits year in and year out, no matter what team it is. Thus, BYU's D will have their hands full. The difference will be which team's D deals with the others O better.
    Can anyone say shootout?

Speaking of spelling, the word is spelled "d-o-m-i-n-a-n-t" and not dominate. Please learn proper grammar and spelling before you start correcting others.

Also if you are going to start talking about dominant teams, the team that has won 14 straight conference games would be considered dominant. That would not be Utah, that would be BYU.

You are right, BYU should not win by 30. The game will be closer than that.

Agreed. Kyle is going to have a bag of tricks ready to go at any moment during the game. If the Cougars aren't ready, they are going to be in for a very sad Saturday evening.

Though Utah's offense is more "big play" capable, BYU is yoeman-like and capable of stringing together five consecutive, very boring, touchdown drives in a row.

If BYU is truly read for Utah, I see a 31-17 type win. If they aren't ready ......

Isn't it amazing that this offense was supposed to be a clone of Texas-Tech's where the QB throws 50 times a game? While the Red Raiders' numbers might look more impressive in the Sunday box score, this super-balanced offense is much better at winning week in and week out.

If Fui returns next year at 100%, this offense is likely to have a 3,300 yard passer, a 1,100 yard AND a 800 yard rusher.

And that spells doom for the rest of the league, especially when you consider that the team's QB, top two rushers and top four receivers will return for at least two more years.

    Way to go Bronco.

Man-o-Man, which Utah team will show up? In listening to the Utah/UNM game Saturday night it sounded like both Utah teams were there. The good one would play for a while, then the team that got shut out by UNLV would come onto the field and try to give the game to UNM. Except UNM wouldn't take it. The BYU/Wyoming game showed a strong and steady Cougar offense and Defense. They played very well even though the game was in Laramie. My prediction -BYU 31 - Utah 10.
