The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a long history of great wrestlers who have gone on to olympic and world success. Joseph Smith is in the National wrestling hall of fame as a famous american and by all accounts was a great wrestler. Penn State's coach Cael Sanderson now a 8X national champion coach, undefeated 4X national champion and Olympic gold medalist has already reached legendary status. He and His older Brother Cody are LDS and are unreal ambassadors for the Sport of Wrestling and the LDS Church. They are in many peoples opinions some of the best coaches in the world in any sport. Their father Steve Sanderson longtime coach in Utah wrestled for BYU. If only BYU had done the right thing and continued the wrestling program instead of selling their soul and joining the arms race of big basketball and big football. BYU could have had all that success maybe even gotten the Sanderson brothers to stay home. BYU might even have become a part of the BIG 12 because wrestling really matters at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. All that said hopefully someday they will repent and fix their mistake, reinstate wrestling and get into the BIG12.

It is KARMA that BYU wants so badly to be affiliated with the big 12 or Pac10 but made the decision to cut wrestling even after supporters raised the money to fully fund the program . BYU would already be in the BIG12or PAC10 in wrestling and might have become a full member at some point had they kept wrestling. I grew up a fan of BYU wrestling but they have now become basically a two sport school football/basketball. They continue to dump money into these sports in their efforts to stay relevant. They fund other programs as well. But not even close to the same commitment levels. Even with their lack of funding the olympic sports at BYU are really the only nationally competitive sports. I get it that Football and Basketball make money but at a church school that is not all that should matter! I'm sorry but people don't join the church because they watch BYU TV. But they do often join the church because of good friends, mentors and coaches who they see living the gospel. When BYU cut wrestling they really hurt the churches influence because of the amount of coaches and individuals that no longer will come out of the wrestling program and go on to influence the lives of other.

During the recent Big 12 wrestling championships, Oklahoma State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Oklahoma, Iowa State, West Virginia, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Air Force Northern Colorado, Utah Valley, and Fresno State battle for Big 12 titles and births to the NCAA Tournament.

    Where was BYU?
