In college football, winning isn't the only factor. Who you beat, and how, is a vital part of moving up the rankings and getting into a good bowl game. So each week during the 2012 season, we'll take a look at how Utah's past and future opponents performed.
Utah Utes 2012 schedule
Aug. 30: Northern Colorado W, 41-0
Sept. 7: at Utah State L, 27-20 OT
Sept. 15: BYU, W, 24-21
Sept. 22: at Arizona State, L, 37-7
Oct. 4: USC 7 p.m. (ESPN)
Oct. 13: at UCLA TBA
Oct. 20: at Oregon State TBA
Oct. 27: Cal TBA
Nov. 3: Washington State TBA
Nov. 10: at Washington TBA
Nov. 17: Arizona TBA
Nov. 23: at Colorado 1 p.m. (FOX/FX)
Last week: Lost at Montana State, 41-16
Things aren't getting better for the Bears. Their only win this year came against the mighty Colorado Mesa University, and their Big Sky schedule doesn't get any easier. At least they have a bye this week.
Next up: Saturday, Oct. 6 vs. Montana
Last week: Won at Colorado State, 31-19
Quarterback Chuckie Keeton has been leading the show for the Aggies, but last week it was all running back Kerwynn Williams, who logged 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead USU over Colorado State. The Aggies are just one missed field goal away from being undefeated.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 vs. UNLV
Last week: Lost at Boise State, 7-6
The Cougar defense is perhaps better than it's ever been, as they shut down Boise State on the road and didn't allow an offensive score. Unfortunately for BYU, the offense has been terrible, with an ineffective (and possibly injured) Riley Nelson the main culprit.
Next up: Friday, Sept. 28 vs. Hawaii
Last week: Won vs. Utah, 37-7
The Sun Devils bounced back from a tough road loss at Missouri in a big way, trouncing the Utes Saturday night in Tempe. Quarterback Taylor Kelly has already passed for 1000 yards this season after surprisingly winning the starting job in fall camp.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 at Cal
Last week: Won vs. Cal 27-9
The Trojans took a tumble in the polls after losing to Stanford on the road, but they got back on the winning track last weekend. They now have a bye before facing the Utes in Salt Lake City. Quarterback Matt Barkley has already thrown 12 touchdown passes this year.
Next up: Thursday, Oct. 4 at Utah
Last week: Lost to Oregon State, 27-20
For a while there, it looked like the best team in Los Angeles might reside in Pasadena rather than South Central. But after last week's home loss to Oregon State, it's clear that the Bruins still have a ways to go before rejoining the Pac-12 elite. Beating up on Colorado should help.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 at Colorado
Last week: Won at UCLA, 27-20
The Beavers had a bye after upsetting Wisconsin to start the year, so no one quite knew whether they were for real. After last weekend's win at the Rose Bowl? Yeah. They're for real. They'll get another chance to prove it this week in Tucson.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 at Arizona
Last week: Lost at #13 USC, 27-9
The Bears have had a tough schedule so far, with their only win coming against Southern Utah and losses at Ohio State and at USC. They've got talent, but playing in the Pac-12 North is a difficult task.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 vs. Arizona State
Last week: Lost vs. Colorado, 35-34
Oops. Wazzu was up big on the hapless Buffs early in the game, but they allowed Colorado to score three touchdowns in the final seven minutes to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And looking at the rest of their schedule, they might not get another win this season.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 vs. #2 Oregon
Last week: Bye
The Huskies haven't played since a 52-13 beatdown of lower-division Portland State. But the break's over now -- UW has to prepare to host #8 Stanford before traveling to Eugene to face #2 Oregon. It probably won't be pretty for Steve Sarkisian's squad.
Next up: Thursday, Sept. 27 vs. #8 Stanford
Last week: Lost at #3 Oregon, 49-0
It looked like new coach Rich Rodriguez had the Wildcats on the right track, but that was before 'Zona ran into a quack attack in Eugene. They'll have to bounce back against Pac-12 upstart Oregon State if they want to prove they belong in the Pac-12 South conversation.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 vs. #18 Oregon State
Last week: Won at Washington State, 35-34
Guess who's leading the Pac-12 South?! Well, technically, Arizona State is ahead on in-division wins, but the Buffs should be proud of their comeback victory over Wazzu in Pullman last week. Unfortunately, looking at Colorado's schedule, that might be the only win they get this year.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 29 vs. UCLA
