In college football, winning isn't the only factor. Who you beat, and how, is a vital part of moving up the rankings and getting into a good bowl game. So each week during the 2012 season, we'll take a look at how Utah State's past and future opponents performed.

Utah State 2012 schedule

Nov. 17 at Louisiana Tech 5 p.m.

Nov. 24 Idaho 1 p.m. (ESPN Regional)

Southern Utah (1-2)

Last week: Won vs. New Mexico Highlands, 45-23

The T-Birds got their first win of the season to give them some momentum heading into Big Sky play.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at Portland State

Utah (2-1)

Last week: Won vs. BYU, 24-21

Wacky ending notwithstanding, the Utes can be proud of a gutty, mentally tough performance against their archrivals. They deserved the win, even missing several key players. Their Pac-12 schedule won't be kind, though.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at Arizona State

Wisconsin (2-1)

Last week: Won vs. Utah State, 16-14

The Badgers struggled for most of the game against the Aggies; they couldn't get their ground game going and had to turn to backup quarterback Joel Stave in the second half. But they did just enough to win after a last-second USU field goal try flew just wide.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. UTEP

Colorado State (1-2)

Last week: Lost at San Jose State, 40-20

The Rams beat Colorado to open the season...but that's nothing to brag about these days. Since then, CSU has lost at home to an FCS school and at San Jose State. Not many bright spots here.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Utah State

UNLV (0-3)

Last week: Lost to Washington State, 35-27

The Rebels have been competitive in every game they've played this year. Unfortunately, those games have been against Minnesota, Northern Arizona, and Washington State...and UNLV has lost every one.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Air Force

BYU (2-1)

Last week: Lost at Utah, 24-21

The Cougars had three chances to tie the Utes and send the game to overtime, but after a clock reset and a fan-induced penalty, kicker Riley Stephenson hit the left upright to give Utah the win. BYU will now have to bounce back in Boise.

Next up: Thursday, Sept. 20 at #24 Boise State

San Jose State (2-1)

Last week: Won vs. Colorado State, 40-20

After falling just short at Stanford to start the season, the Spartans have been racking up points and passing yards. Quarterback David Fales threw for 370 of them last week, along with three touchdowns.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at San Diego State

New Mexico State (1-2)

Last week: Lost at UTEP, 41-28

The Aggies' receivers look good, as Kemonte Bateman and Austin Franklin each tallied seven catches and over 100 yards. But that's mostly because NMSU had to throw a lot after the defense gave up 27 straight points to start the game.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. New Mexico

UTSA (3-0)

Last week: Beat Georgia State, 38-14

Break up the Roadrunners! Former Miami head coach Larry Coker has UTSA firing on all cylinders...against FCS foes, anyway. We'll see what happens when they get into their tougher WAC schedule.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State

Texas State (1-1)

Last week: No game

The Bobcats had the week off to lick their wounds after getting shelled by Texas Tech. Fortunately, they should be better than their next opponent, Stephen F. Austin.

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Stephen F. Austin

Louisiana Tech (2-0)

Last week: Won vs. Rice, 56-37

The Bulldogs can't stop anybody -- but at least they can outscore them. They've won their first two games by a combined score of 112-86. Defense? What defense?

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at Illinois

Idaho (0-3)

Last week: Lost at LSU, 63-14

Ouch. The Vandals got torn to shreds by the Tigers in Baton Rouge. But things are looking up -- this week Idaho faces a team they might actually beat. (Possibly. Maybe.)

Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Wyoming
