Matt Herp, For the Deseret News

Editor’s note: The Deseret News picks the MVPs, but the remainder of the all-state teams are based on coaches' votes. Here’s a more in-depth look at all of the first-, second- and third-teamers, including a scouting report comment from an opposing coach.

Sydnee Gillins, Beaver

2A MVP
Sr., 5-6, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
12.4 points per game
3.9 rebounds per game
1.5 assists per game
1.5 steals per game
Season high
27 points vs. Judge Memorial on Dec. 15
Opposing coach scouting report
“Sydnee Gillins is one of those players you don't try to stop, you hope to slow her down. She is a great player that can create her own opportunity to score. Her ability to drive to the basket opens up her excellent outside shooting. She had to play many roles this year and is truly an all-around player.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Second Team
2017 — 2A Second Team

Ronnie Robinson, Enterprise

2A First Team
Sr., 5-11, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
14.7 points per game
6.8 rebounds per game
2.8 steals per game
1.8 assists per game
Season high
27 points vs. Parowan on Feb. 7
Opposing coach scouting report
“Ronnie is a complete player. She is great on both ends of the floor. Her combination of length and athleticism is something you don't see often at the 2A level. She is a great 3-point shooter that you could not afford to give an open look to. She could also put the ball on the floor with either hand and get to the basket. She is a very intelligent player that never forced things. She always kept her composure and never appeared to be frustrated. You had to account for where she was at all times on defense. Her length and speed allowed her to cover the floor and she is great at anticipating passes. You tried to stay away from where she was at on defense. She truly is one of those players that can do it all. Undoubtedly one of the best players in the state.”

Kennady McQueen, North Summit

2A First Team
Jr., 5-10, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
21.8 points per game
6.7 rebounds per game
5.0 assists per game
4.9 steals per game
Season high
32 points at South Summit on Feb. 7
Opposing coach scouting report
“Preparing for Kennady was difficult. Offensively, we knew we couldn't stop her. We had to strategize on merely slowing her down. It's rare to find a high school player who is the complete package like Kennady. She can shoot very well. She can make contested shots. She can get to the key and finish. She's automatic from the free throw line. She's excellent at making plays for her teammates. And if she's not enough of a headache to guard, we also had to account for where she was at on defense. She's a good ball defender. She was great at sitting on skip passes, picking those passes off and turning them into run-out layups. She's an active rebounder as well. If she wasn't pushing the ball in transition after a rebound, she was running a lane getting open. You have to know where she's at at all times on offense, defense and transition. She's got to be one of the very top all-around players in the entire state, 1A-6A.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A First Team
2017 — 2A Third Team

Sidney McDonald, Kanab

2A First Team
Sr.,5-6, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
13.0 points per game
3.0 rebounds per game
5.0 assists per game
3.0 steals per game
Season high
22 points vs. Parowan on Jan. 31
Opposing coach scouting report
“Sidney is a 3-point assassin. She averages more than two a game so you can't let her get going. If the game is on the line, the ball will be in her hands. You better foul her before she gets to the 3-point line. But she can make you pay from there as well. Last year she made 14 in a row in the four quarter of the Wasatch Academy game. She's always been a scorer, but this year she has increased her rebounds, assists and steals. She's done a better job of involving her teammates and that's the reason they played in the state championship.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A First Team
2017 — 2A First Team

Brittlyn Carter, Beaver

2A First Team
Sr., 5-5, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
10.8 points per game
3.4 rebounds per game
3.2 assists per game
2.0 steals per game
Season high
22 points at Gunnison Valley on Feb. 7
Opposing coach scouting report
“Brittlyn's consistent and intelligent play has tormented us for years. We learned we couldn't underestimate her or think we could take advantage of her small size — dynamite comes in small packages too. She's relentless and would never back off on defense. She'd never stop taking it at you on offense. Her demeanor on the court was impressive. She'd never show signs of being discouraged or intimidated. She's a very tough opponent to play against. She did nothing but improve every single year. She's a great leader on the floor and a very good shooter, ball-handler and defender. I'd take her on my team any day.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Honorable Mention

Nataly Dunka, Wasatch Academy

2A First Team
So., 6-1, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
18.0 points per game
Season high
31 points at Waterford on Jan. 29
Opposing coach scouting report
“Nataly is virtually unstoppable. She runs the floor like a gazelle and finishes strong at the rim. She can shoot the 3 and she has the best pull-up jumper in 2A. She is very adept at running the pick and roll and doesn't panic under pressure. As a 6-foot-2 guard she is a tough matchup for anyone. And since she is only a sophomore she will be a nightmare for opponents for years to come.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Third Team

Brinley Cornell, Kanab

2A First Team
Jr., 5-10, Forward
2018-2019 statistics
15.0 points per game
6.0 rebounds per game
2.0 steals per game
Season high
28 points vs. Waterford on Feb. 15
Opposing coach scouting report
“Brinley Cornell is a player that does it all. She is a great scorer, rebounder and passer. She can score from outside or take the ball to the hole and finish. She is an excellent leader on the floor and is versatile in playing different positions. She has a high knowledge of the game.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Honorable Mention

Tavy Gale, Beaver

2A Second Team
Sr., 5-6, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
9.0 points per game
5.0 rebounds per game
3.8 assists per game
5.4 steals per game
Season high
18 points vs. St. Joseph on Feb. 15
Opposing coach scouting report
“Tavy is a player that seems to fly under the radar for most teams, but if you overlook her, you will surely be regretting that decision. She knows the game of basketball, and knows where to be at, at just the right moments. Watching her play you will be amazed of how many times she ends up with the ball. She will come out with rebounds leaving you wondering 'where did she came from,' or making an incredible steal as the opposing player tries to make a killer crossover. Definitely a player that any coach wouldn’t think twice of having on their team.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Third Team

Megan Wade, Millard

2A Second Team
Sr., 5-4, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
13.2 points per game
3.5 rebounds per game
1.8 assists per game
3.4 steals per game
Season high
21 points vs. Wasatch Academy on Feb. 22
Opposing coach scouting report
“Megan Wade can dribble, pass, shoot the 3-pointer, and drive to the rim. If you try to run her off the 3, she will drive past you and score at the basket. If you try to lay off her and force her to beat you from the perimeter, she will. If you try to take her scoring away from her, she will set her teammates up with the pass.”

Brecklyn Murdock, North Summit

2A Second Team
Jr., 5-9, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
10.0 points per game
7.0 rebounds per game
Season high
18 points vs. Rockwell on Feb. 15
Opposing coach scouting report
“Brecklyn is the kind of player who can hurt you in several ways. She is an extremely aggressive rebounder and finisher, but she can also hurt you by her ability to run the floor and score points at the free throw line. She is a tough defender with good anticipation that will pick off many passes thrown too soft or too high up in the air. One of the things I most respect about her as player is she brings a level of intensity and aggressiveness that carries over and is visible in the way the rest of the team plays as well.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Second Team

Kobree Penney, Millard

2A Second Team
Jr., 5-9, Guard/Post
2018-2019 statistics
9.9 points per game
9.2 rebounds per game
1.7 assists per game
2.7 steals per game
Season high
20 points vs. Canyon View on Dec. 14
Opposing coach scouting report
“Kobree is a very difficult matchup. She is extremely athletic. Fast, quick, strong. Able to play every position on the floor. Good 3-point shooter. Able to put it on the floor and get to the basket. You put a post defender on her and she could step out and hit the 3 or take them to the basket. You put a guard defender on her and she will post up and score. She is a skilled passer that is very good at finding her open teammates. She is a great rebounder that plays with tremendous energy. She is always moving and seems to have a motor that never runs out of gas.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Third Team

Ellie Shurtliff, Enterprise

2A Second Team
Sr., 5-8, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
6.6 points per game
4.0 rebounds per game
2.3 assists per game
1.6 steals per game
Season high
17 points vs. Gunnison Valley on Jan. 17
Opposing coach scouting report
“Ellie was an instant dose of energy for her team. She brought intensity and enthusiasm to every game. She was the first to loose balls, rebounds and any play that required getting on the floor. I envied that about her. We knew every game against Enterprise that we had to at least try to match their collective effort because of what Ellie contributed single-handedly. It always looked like she would spark her teammates to play a little harder whenever she was in the game. She has a lot of quickness. She could get to the paint and finish or set a teammate up for a good play. She was a very good defender. Her best qualities, though, were the things you can't coach — excellent attitude, consistent effort and energy.”

Virginia Tomon, St. Joseph

2A Second Team
Sr., 6-0, Forward
2018-2019 statistics
17.4 points per game
12.9 rebounds per game
2.7 steals per game
Season high
31 points vs. American Heritage on Dec. 20
Opposing coach scouting report
“Virginia was an extremely strong player on the low block. She got a lot of rebounds on both ends of the floor. She was also a great opponent. All of our girls liked her because she was friendly, and they appreciated her good sportsmanship.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Second Team

Danyale Thomas, Layton Christain

2A Third Team
Sr., 5-4, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
14.0 points per game
Season high
27 points vs. St. Joseph on Feb. 5
Opposing coach scouting report
“Danyale was hard to guard with her quickness, and when she was hitting 3-pointers, she created a lot of problems for defenses.”
Past all-state honors
2018 — 2A Honorable Mention
2017 — 2A Third Team

Gracie Watterson, North Summit

2A Third Team
Jr., 5-9, Forward
2018-2019 statistics
10.0 points per game
8.5 rebounds per game
Season high
18 points vs. Altamont on Jan. 17
Opposing coach scouting report
“Gracie is a well-rounded basketball player that can cause an opposing team problems in all aspects of the game. She is a contributor on both ends of the floor. Nearly averaging a double-double (points/rebounds) on the season truly says just what type of player she is. If she is not hurting you offensively, then she is dominating the boards. She is a tough player to stop.”

Duda Raimundo, Wasatch Academy

2A Third Team
Jr., 5-7, Guard
2018-2019 statistics
8.3 points per game
Season high
21 points vs. Millard on Feb. 22
Opposing coach scouting report
“Duda Raimundo is an outstanding athlete who plays equally as well on both sides of the ball. Her quickness, court vision and ability to involve her teammates make her a true threat every time she takes the court. Whether pressuring the ball defensively in the full-court or driving and finishing at the basket, Duda is a true talent. Most importantly, she makes everyone around her a better player. Humble and focused, the sky is the limit for this outstanding hoopster. Best of luck Duda...it was a pleasure watching you play this season.”

Jessi Anderson, Kanab

2A Third Team
Sr., 6-0, C
2018-2019 statistics
9.0 points per game
8.0 rebounds per game
Season high
22 points at Millard on Jan. 24
Opposing coach scouting report
“Jessi is a player that you might underestimate. She can post up hard and make her move to the basket and somehow make it go in just about every time. She works just as hard on defense as well, frustrating most post players by not letting them do what they want to do. She is a great shooter from the free throw line also.”

Hadley Richins, North Summit

2A Third Team
So., 5-3, G
2018-2019 statistics
6.0 points per game
5.0 assists per game
3.7 steals per game
Season high
19 points vs. Rich on Jan. 19
Opposing coach scouting report
“Hadley is a skilled player who can handle the ball, hit the open shot or find the open teammate. She is a tenacious defender and is not afraid to get in the paint and mix it up for a rebound or a loose ball.”

Rylee Miller, Millard

2A Third Team
Jr., 5-10, G/P
2018-2019 statistics
8.8 points per game
5.5 rebounds per game
1.6 assists per game
2.2 steals per game
Season high
16 points vs. North Summit on Feb. 21
Opposing coach scouting report
“Rylee is one of the best shooters in the state. Great 3-point shooter that stretches the floor. If you give her an open shot she will make you pay. She is a player that always seemed to make big shots when her team needed them. She has length and athleticism that is difficult to defend and makes her a very tough defender. She is a great passer that makes the players around her better. Tough rebounder. The type of player that is willing to do whatever her team needs.”
