The 2017-2018 high school basketball season gets underway this Tuesday with 39 games around the state. To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 5A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.

The region rankings are based on coaches preseason projections.

There are two new head basketball coaches in 5A this year: Aton Sykes (West) and Mitch Smith (East).

Here are the 5A teams and players to watch this upcoming season.

So either we accept the fact that we can't be one of the best, or we find a way to prove that a team will beat a superstar. All we are is a bunch of hard-working guys who like each other and who will fight to the finish for their buddies. We'll see if that’s enough."

Coach Comment: "Expectations are high for the Rams in 2017. We are pretty deep, athletic, and fairly experienced returning almost everyone from last year. We expect multiple players to contribute and step up each game. One thing we don't want to say at the end of this year is that we were just another year older and saw no improvement on last year's campaign. With so many players getting time, team chemistry will be vital-a TEAM first attitude is vital for success. We expect to compete for region and make some noise in the state tournament."

Adrian Wilde, Guard, Jr. — 0.2 ppg

Coach Comment: "We have a veteran group with a ton of experience, we have athletic players who can run the floor. Our willingness to defend will ultimately decide our fate, if we get after it on that end of the floor we can play with anyone. A good senior class and depth could make us tough to beat if we get after it on the defensive end."

5. Murray High School

Returning Starters: 3

Returning Contributors:

Hunter Erickson, Sr. — Guard

Ethan Lott, Sr. — Forward

Nate Hansen, Jr. — Guard

Coach Comment: “We suffered a bit of setback with Adam Santiago tearing his ACL five days before tryouts; he is out for the season. He set the tone for the way we like to play. We will miss his leadership, fire, and basketball IQ. We will also start the season without Hunter Erickson (who recently signed with BYU) while he heals from surgery on his thumb. We hope to have him back by mid-December. We will have to make some adjustments and guys will have to step up for us to reach our goals. I really like our team. They have worked really hard in the offseason. In addition to our two guys with college offers, Hunter and Nate Hansen, we expect great seasons from Ethan Lott, Mathias Meilsoe, Jake Muchmore, Kelson Jensen, Alrek Greenhaughl, and McKay Knell.”

Luc Krystkowiak, Guard, Jr. — 10.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.0 spg

Coach Comment: "We are really excited about this year’s team. With three returning starters, accounting for over half our points and a vast majority of other statistical categories, we feel that we have the experience needed to win games in an extremely tough Region 7. Not making the state tournament last year and losing 6 games by essentially one possession left a bad taste in our mouth and has made everyone in our program very hungry this offseason to ensure that doesn’t happen again. If we can navigate through a very difficult preseason, including invites to the Utah Elite 8 and the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines, we will be poised to compete for a Region 7 title and a state tournament run."
